  8. Searching The Software Libraries
  9. --------------------------------

  11. Downloading is one of our favorite pastimes, and with all the excellent
  12. software being added daily to the Commodore Libraries by members, even our 40+
  13. different Library divisions becomes cramped at times.
  14.  
  15. Luckily, there are several things you can do to narrow down the number of files
  16. you need to sift through when you are looking for a particular file or type of
  17. file.
  18.  
  19. First, understand that you default to 'ALL LIBRARIES SET'.  In other words,
  20. when you Browse, Search or ask for a Directory of the files, you are seeing ALL
  21. the files we have in the library.  Right now this is well over 12,000 titles!
  22.  
  23. The libraries have been divided into what seemed logical divisions.  You can
  24. set your file selections so that you view ONLY the files which are related to
  25. that Library itself.  There are 40+ Libraries to choose from.  This is item #8
  26. on your Software Library menu, SET SOFTWARE LIBRARY.

  28. When you choose #8, you are presented with the first 1/3 of the Library names.
  29. All you need to do is select the library number and press RETURN.  Let us say
  30. you wanted to choose #1, Information Exchange, which is where all our online
  31. newsletters, The *StarBoard* Journal editions are kept. You'll find all SORTS
  32. of useful texts, reviews, how to's and computing fun in that category. Choose
  33. #8 on the SET LIBRARY menu, and Press RETURN.

  35. You find yourself looking at EXACTLY the same menu you just left, only THIS
  36. time, you will be BROwsing, Downloading or looking at a DIRectory of *just* the
  37. files in library #1.  ALL other files in ALL other libraries are excluded.

  39. Many times, just SETting a library is not enough, you need a fast list of files
  40. which meet a specific criteria.  Each file has a set of keywords attatched to
  41. it.  You can use the SEARCH feature to locate these items.

  43. SEARCH works from either ALL LIBRARIES SET or with just 1 Library selected.

  45. Lets say we wanted to quickly locate the file numbers for the LIBRARY UTILITY
  46. and instructions.  Here's what I would do...
  47.  
  48. FIRST, I'd SET to library #4, Disk and File Toolkit.  You can use SET LIBRARY
  49. from the #8 item on the Software Library menu of page 625.
  50. Now, here is what I see, and what I do, and the results of my search, bufferred
  51. as it actually happens.  Note that on several items of SEARCH, namely Uploader
  52. and Number of Days, I just press RETURN, because I want ALL of the files, not
  53. just those from a particular person or within a particularly recent vintage:

  108. Bingo!  You now have a list of  files to reference.  its ALWAYS a good idea to
  109. capture your search listing to your buffer.  SEARCH will reference
  110. KEYWORDS...and PORTIONS of KEYWORDS.  That is why I typed in 'LIB' rather than
  111. the whole thing 'LIBRARY'.  If something had had the keyword:

  113. LIBEL or LIBERTY  or LIBBY's or  ADLIBS
  114.  
  115. my search would have located those as well.

  117. Together with the direct download command, the SEARCH command becomes a
  118. timesaving scan of related files, so you can easily pull up the complete
  119. descriptions on the filenumbers in which you are interested.
