- Uploading to the Software Library
- ---------------------------------
-
-
- The Software Libraries of your Roundtable are for the most part, supplied by
- all the Roundtable members who want to share their favorite Public Domain
- programs and files with the other members of the Roundtable. You can help your
- Roundtable grow by contributing to the Software Library too!
-
- Unlike some other commercial data networks, sending programs to GEnie, also
- known as 'Uploading', is FREE. You are not charged for the time it takes to
- send material to the Software Library, so you can contribute programs as often
- as you wish, and not have to worry about the expense to you.
-
- To Upload files to Genie, you must have a Terminal program which uses the
- XMODEM method of sending data. You must either buy a commercial Terminal
- program, or obtain a Public Domain Terminal, which includes XMODEM capability.
-
- If you need a program capable of XMODEM file transfers, please see the
- instructions under the Survival Kit "How To Download" selection for obtaining a
- program from one of the sysops.
-
- Uploading to GEnie is really quite simple. Just follow the prompts and fill in
- the information requested. Please upload ONLY Public Domain programs and files,
- or files which you yourself own the copyrights to, indicating that it is your
- wish to have them distributed on GEnie in the description. At the present time,
- magazine program listings are not allowed online.
-
- Also, please check the directories for duplicates of the files you wish to
- Upload. There's no point in wasting your time uploading programs which are
- already there in the Library. If you have any question about whether or not
- your upload may duplicate an existing file, send it anyway, and we'll check it
- out for you. Each file in the Software Library must have a unique name. If you
- try to use a name that has already been used, you will be told to choose a
- different name. This may happen occasionally when uploading a new version of an
- existing program. Simply use a slight variation on the filename.
-
- There are a few conventions and standards we would like to adhere to in the
- Roundtable Software Library. Please upload all files which have been ARC'd for
- file combining and compression with a .ARC at the end of them. Sidplayer files
- should have a .MUS at the end of them. Doodle pictures should be preceeded
- with a DD. These just make it easier for everyone to download the files with
- the proper filename requirements for our own disks and systems at home. All
- text files should be uploaded in standard ASCII with returns at the end of each
- line. If your terminal program does not already provide Pet ASCII to standard
- ASCII translation, there are file utilities in the software library which will
- do the translating for you.
-
- Groups of files, such as those needed for DEMOs, should be ARCHIVED using the
- ARC utility. Again, this will result in savings of time and disk space for
- everyone. Please do not use the older SQUeeze, LYNX, or LIBrary formats for
- uploads.
-
- When Uploading, the first thing you must do is to choose which Library your
- file will be put into. Try to match your files to the Libraries as closely as
- possible so your uploaded programs will be easy for everyone to find.
- Obviously, Games should go into one of the Games Library, and Terminal programs
- into the Telecommunications Library.
-
- After setting to the specific library, select UPLOAD on the menu. You will
- immediately see a message from GEnie indicating that the billing has been
- turned off for the upload session! <hey, thanks, GEnie!>
-
- Next you will be asked for descriptive information about the file you are
- Uploading. Give the Name of the file, a Short Description and Long Description
- and then a series of 'Keywords' which describe your program. Try to use
- Keywords which are similar to those used on other files in the same Library.
-
- Make your Descriptions as accurate as possible, and PLEASE indicate whether the
- programs will run in 40 or 80 column mode for the C-128 files. If another
- program or language is required to use it, note that in the description. If
- you are not the author of the file, please give proper credit to the author if
- he's given you permission, as well.
-
- Then you will be asked which Uploading Protocol you will be using. ALL files
- should be uploaded using the XMODEM protocol. If your Terminal program allows
- it, the XMODEM CRC method is somewhat more accurate, so use it if you can. The
- majority of terminals do not yet support XMODEM CRC <or CCITT>, but use the
- general CHECKSUM XMODEM. If your program does not specifically give you the
- choice of CRC <or CCITT>, then it does not use it.
-
- When GEnie says 'Ready for Input', start your Terminal program uploading the
- file. Its VERY important to wait for GEnie to say READ FOR INPUT! At the end of
- the transfer, GEnie will print out a summary of any errors, then ask you to
- press RETURN. You will then be asked if you want to put the file in the
- Library. Answer YES, unless there was some problem during the uploading which
- would make you want to cancel the upload.
-
- The files you send will be 'Hidden' from public view until one of the Sysops
- has a chance to review them to be sure they made the trip from your computer
- successfully, and to check them for such things as copyright questions. You can
- normally expect to see your contributions to the Roundtable Software Library
- made public within a day or two.
-
- Normally, the cause of problems during Uploading is a 'noisy' telephone line.
- If you get a large number of re-transmitted blocks, or are seeing a lot of
- 'garbage characters' (xD\`}) on the screen, it might be a good idea to log-off
- of GEnie and call back, in hopes of getting a better telephone connection. Line
- noise can not only waste your time by causing a lot of re-transmitted blocks,
- but can also cause the system to 'lock-up' and stop accepting data from your
- computer. In that case, all you can do is to hang up at your end and call back.
-
- Also, most Terminal programs have several settings which must be set properly
- for Uploading to work. Fortunately most programs come set to these 'default'
- values already, so you normally don't have to change anything. If you have a
- lot of problems, check to see that your Terminal is set to the following
- values:
-
- 8 Data bits, NO Parity, 1 Stop Bit
-
- Be certain that you haven't changed your modem to HALF DUPLEX. For XMODEM
- transfers to work properly, your modem MUST be set to FULL DUPLEX. To see what
- you are typing on GEnie, you should change your Terminal Program to HALF
- DUPLEX.
-
- Many times the 1200 baud rate factor must be adjusted to allow proper XMODEM
- uploading and downloading. Uploading is MUCH more susceptible to this than
- downloading. If you are running at 1200 baud, do not rule this out. There are
- complete instructions and explanations for this "feature" of running Commodore
- computers in the Survival Kit: How to set 1200 Baud Rate Factor.
-
- If you encounter a lot of problems during Uploading, please check your PORT
- number (type PORT at a Page menu prompt) and report the number and as complete
- a description of the problems as you can give to the Roundtable Sysops. We'll
- try to work with you to get the problems cleared up.
-
- Thank you for Uploading, and helping to make your Roundtable grow!
