- I seem to remeber a program made in the mid to late 80's for the CBM that
- would allow me to hook my 128 up to the ECM on my car, which would show the
- RPM, Temp., etc... I have been looking for it, but can not find it. Did this
- program ever exist? Or is it just part of my imagination?
-
- Any help would be appreciated.

- It did exist and worked on Jeeps too. As a matter of fact, the Jeep
- testers use to be some sort of C-64 ROM cartridge. I as surprised when
- I first saw one :)
-
- As for the actual ECM (electronic control module) hookup, I have not
- seen or heard of ones for years.

- It just so happens that in my everyday job, (automotive repair shop) I use
- either a 64 or a 128 to interface to today's cars to monitor the onboard
- computers, the engine's ecm, as well as the controllers used with electonic
- transmission such as the Chrysler A-604 and also other body computers. The
- machine that allows me to do this is a Snap-On Scanner available from any Snap-
- On Tools dealer. The scanner has it's own 40 column by 4 line screen and you
- can scroll up and down to view different parameters as the info is transmitted
- from the vehicle to the scanner. The scanner also has a port that allows you
- to interface it to a personal computer. It just so happens that a SwiftLink
- connects perfectly to the cable supplied with the scanner. This allows me to
- use the 64 to control all functions of the scanner right from the keyboard.
- The only software needed is a VT-100 terminal program that is compatible with
- the SwiftLink cartridge. I normally use a 128 with Dialogue128. The scanner
- can communicate at up to 4800 baud in this fashion. You can also connect it to
- a 1670 modem, but data transfer is then limited to 1200 baud. By using the
- 128, I can save all parameters following a tune-up to disk and use them for a
- future reference the next time the car comes into the shop. I can also use a
- printer to print out any readings I wish. The scanner's cost is somewhere
- around $1500, so it is not for the home mechanic, but for someone who does
- this sort of work on a daily basis, the combination of scanner and computer
- can be very invaluable and will save a great deal of time with the electronics
- that are in use today.

- The newer .GIFs are 89A and IPort reads only 87A. You can use a T/S editor to

-
- I don't understand the question, but CS-DOS/ARC128 (CS-DOS is kind of
- like an environment under which ARC128 operates) offers a lot more than
- just compression and decompression capability.
-
- WW> that 'Compression Kit' program do any better? -How much better?
-
- I can't answer that either, *but* what you gain with CS-DOS and ARC-128
- is compatibility. Better or worse is kind of moot. Kind of like Beta was
- supposed to be 'better' than VHS. VHS was the more widely accepted, more
- widely used, thus, it is the 'standard' most everyone uses. Perhaps
- compatibility is not exactly the right word, but do you see what I mean?
- It is the most widely used going back as long as I can remember. CS-DOS
- now also offers vehicles to dissolve many ZIP files and also MS-DOS
- type archives. Faster or better, *if* the Compression Kit offers that,
- would be little consolation if you were the only one using it.

- For one thing CS-DOS/ARC128 is shareware, is not dongle protected, and
- the archives can be dissolved on an IBM PC when you upgrade your computer.
-
- Do you want to archive all the files together or do you want to
- compress them as individual disks?
-
- If you want to compress them as individual disks your best bet might be
- to set up 1541 (or 1571) partitions on the HD, MCOPY the 1541 disks to
- the hard drive.
-
- Then use an auto exec routine written with your word processor to do
- something like this:
-
- @#8 (your hard drive)
- @cp15 (first partition to compress)
- a: (switch the default drive to your HD)
- arc128/a c:filename.arc a:* (read from the HD)
- @cp16 (2nd partition to compress)
- arc128/a c:filename2.arc a:* (read from the HD)
-
- A 1581 will hold about 5-7 compressed 1541 disks. I .arced about 500 of
- my own disks in a manner like this and fit 6 .arcs onto each 1581 disk.
-
- After you compress all those disks you should send your $20 shareware fee
- to:
- Parsec, Inc.

- Salem, MA 01970-0111

- If you are going to use LHA to compress disks you will find it takes a
- lot longer than .ARCing them, though if you are using a C-1750 and HD with

- Thanks for the help. But I guess I need to clarify the question:
- Does Arc 128 create a whole disk archive much faster than Arc64 2.xx?
- Does Arc 128 compress any more than the 64 version?
- You lost me when it was suggested I use an auto-exec file w/HD & 1750.
-
- I ask the first 2 questions because when using Arc 2.30 (64), it took
- between 15-25 minutes to arc 1 1541 disk. And it only cut # of blocks from
- 550 original down to 470 blocks. It felt like it was a waste of time to
- compress only about 8%, and soaking up so much of my time-
- 400 (disks) X 15 (minutes) = Christmas 1994!
-
- So I ask before I go any further into the abyss.... Will :)

- The compression kit's biggest advantage over ARC is that it can compress
- ENTIRE disks. Not just the files, but also the formatting information of the
- disk itself. It can do this for 1541, 71, 81, FD/HD/RAMLink emulations,
- anything almost. It's very easy to use, and is pretty reliable. It's
- compression isn't the greatest though. The LHA program is a lot more
- efficient. But, unless someone comes out with a version of LHA that can do
- whole disks (format and all), then you're best bet would be Madman's Software
- for this particular task.
-
- Personally, I generally use a combination approach. I use ARC, and LHA to do
- files. In fact, someday I'm going to try to backup my entire collection
- (yeah, right!). When I come upon disks which use Random disk access, or REL
- files then you have to go to Madman's for backup. The ARC series doesn't work
- with odd, weird, or otherwise nonstandard filetypes. So all those gaes where
- no files showup on the directory, but the game is there somewhere get placed
- under Madman's program. Generally it all works. EXCEPT, I know of no programs
- which allow you to backup copy protected software in this way. It's really a
- shame what the software companies did to protect their software. It made life
- very difficult for legitimate users. But, them's the breaks.
-
- As to the dongle protection of Madman's. Well, it is comercial product. I
- find it preferable to the before mentioned copy protected disks. But, not as
- preferable as no protection at all.

- Jake, and whoever posted the original question:
-
- Do you know how to use a sector editor? If so, you can whittle ARC files
- down in size relatively easily. All ARC files are written to disk in
- sector size packets. That means they all end on an even sector. The
- beginnings are easily recognized because they start with a 2 (there are
- not that many version 1 archives around), and the file name of the
- dissolved file is easy to spot in a sector dump. Therefore, all you
- would have to do is some sector twiddling to create several files from
- the large archive. I don't mean to make it sound like a walk in the
- park, and there probably should be some easier way to do this, but this
- is a viable option for someone with some advanced knowledge of DOS and
- a sector editor.
