- I am having a problem with running perfect print in parallel. I was having no
- problem until I switched from a 128d to a C128. The problem is either a weak
- user port or a bad parallel cable. The cable works with superbase and the
- user port works otherwise, so I am not sure. My 128d has another problem and

- If the problem only occurs when using Perfect Print on the flat C-128,
- I would hazard a guess that:
- 1) the 6526 chip is bad at the User Port
- or
- 2) nothing is wrong except the timing/signal on the flat C-128 is off
- enough to mess up a high speed serial transfer.

- Strange, I tried a new switch box and cable and I still had the problem. If
- I bypass a switch box and go directly to the printer Perfect print works fine.
- Why should placing a switch box make a difference. It didn't with a c64 and

- Possible that the 128 you're using simply has weaker serial bus signals, and
- the additional connection of the switchbox is enough to skew those signals and

- When you run MAKE.WIZBOOT.128 the program never executes line #28. Or, are
- you talking about the resulting WIZBOOT.128 program it writes to disk?
- It'S possible you have a bad download of MAKE.WIZBOOT.128. I just checked
- and the file here is just fine. When I ran it, it notifies you it is NOT
- part of the Wizard package and then goes on to ask you about your setup.
- VDC ram, baud rate, printer device, printer secondary address, and such.
- Then writes a new copy of WIZBOOT.128 to disk. My line 28 was intact:
-
- 28 poke8222,7 :rem printer 2nd addr
-
- Just a thought... Since MAKE.WIZBOOT.128 is VERY sensitive to where in
- memory the program lies issue a GRAPHIC CLR command before running it to
- make sure the graphic area isn't allocated. Otherwise my guess would have to
- be a bad download.

- I'm sure you may get some conflicting information on this, but I'm going
- with experience, and there was, many years ago, a thread somewhere
- around here to this effect that I was a part of....
-
- I personally don't trust ARC 2.5. When I have to use a C64 version, and
- there are occasions when I do, I prefer 2.03. Version 2.05 has given me
- problems... it frequently grunges an archive. Not the originals tho,
- mind you.... just the archives it creates. The thread never pursued this
- very deeply, but did generate other similar experiences. There are those
- who swear by it. Everyone can make their own decisions on this. There
- were also those who swore by the 1541, that there was no save@ bug... and
- by the 1581... that it is the most reliable drive CBM ever made.. that
- there were no bugs in it. I know better from experience on both.
-
- My recommendation is to use 2.03. C128 users may or may not note that
- even CS-DOS, I believe, used arc 2.41 and not 2.05. I'm not basing my
- opinion on this... just personal experience. The experiences I had were
- when I was writing PCG Term and uploading it here for others. I had to
- redo several of them. This is my feeling on ARC 2.05. I've always found
- 2.03 very solid.

- Okay, I've got a question! DCMR is the best 64 OR 128 disk cataloger I have

- way - not so much the total file capacity, but more like the space allocated

- I think the absolute limit for this function is 145 files, just beyond the
- ceiling for 1541 directories. This may have been fine for when DCMR was just
- created, but in this era of 1581's, RAMLinks and hard drives, this is NOT

- Superbase's print routine is, indeed, not too fast. If you have a buffer,
- e.g. I have a 64K Centronics buffer (Supra) between my Supergrafix interface
- and the printer, I think you can speed things slightly by taking the printer
- offline while you fill the buffer. That, at least, will eliminate handshaking
- between the buffer and the printer while the buffer is being filled, and free
- up the computer faster.
-
- To B.Gann and MRaboy: just to be sure, you're not using Cntrl-P to print from
- Superbase, I hope. That function is only a screen dump intended for
- occasional use. The way to print a series of records from Superbase is to
- create a keylist with the FIND function and then output from the list to the
- printer.

- Well, I tried my bright idea about filling the print buffer with the printer
- offline as a technique for speeding Superbase printouts and it doesn't help.
- What does improve the speed is the use of a programmed output. For instance,
- consider a vertical printout of a series of records located by the FIND
- command. Sent to the printer by entering on the command line OUTPUT FROM
- "H8LIST" (after entering PRINT DOWN) this produces the following output (for
- each record):
-
- Fieldname 1 Contents of Field 1 Fieldname 2 Contents of Field 2
- ....... .......
-
- Fieldname n Contents of Field n
-
- An identical printout can be obtained from a programmed printout as follows:
-
- 10 PRINT ACROSS 20 OUTPUT FROM "" @1"Fieldname 1" @15&[Fieldname 1] PLUS 30
- @1"Fieldname 2" @15&[Fieldname 2] PLUS 40 ............... 50
- ...............etc. 100 @1 "Fieldname n" @15&[Fieldname n]
-
- The difference is that in the second case the printout will be about 30%
- faster. Not a dramatic difference, but significant. J.Karn

- It may be possible to speed up the geocable transfer by changing the baud rate

- I recently picked up a used copy of Superbase v2.07. Is there an upgrade
- policy? What are the differences between 2.07 and the latest? Tony

- Version 4.5 of the CS-DOS Extra Utilties Pack has just been released. It's
- only update is a new version of BVUNZIP that is much more flexible than the
- previous release. It does *not* yet handle 2.04g style PKZIP files; however,
- the new commands make BVUNZIP more useable.
-
- The Pack runs on the C128 under CS-DOS only. CS-DOS is available elsewhere
- online; direct questions concerning CS-DOS availability to John Brown at GEnie
- address C128.JBEE.
-
- The following is a copy of the help available within BVUNZIP. It was obtained
- by typing "bvunzip -h" at the command line. It will give you an idea of what
- the new release can do:
-
-
- BVUNZIP Zip Extract Utility Version 1.63 93-09-01
- Copyright 1993 Bruce Vrieling. All rights reserved.
-
- Usage: BVUNZIP [options] filename [filespec]
-
- Options:
- -c extract to console -s force filetype to SEQ
- -v view contents of zip file -t trim off dir info
- -h print usage information -p translate output to petscii
- -n if dup exists, append a "+" to end of filename
- -u if dup exists, unconditionaly overwrite (no prompting)
-
- The "-t" option was by special request... it allows one to extract IBM zip
- archives that contain filenames longer than 16 characters. By specifying -t,
- BVUNZIP will chop off the directory suffix on the file name; the remaining
- filename will then be used as the filename of the extracted file.
-
- Please direct any questions to me here, or to one of the mailboxes listed at
- the end of this message.
-
- Enjoy!

- John,
-
- Actually, it slipped my mind that you were still waiting for the -t command.
- If I had remembered, I could have slipped you the beta code a month ago, as -
- it was one of the first commands I added. :(
-
- Sorry about that.

- This file will probably be released either today or tomorrow.. due to
- some library maintenance, I am unable to release any files at this
- time--the file is not the problem. This is an excellent upgrade,
- Thanks Bruce!

- BWE, answered you uptopic but will put it here again for others
- benefit as well.. use LHX to de-LZH files inside csdos. :>
-
- If the file is on drive 9 (csdos drive C), and you want to dissolve
- it to drive 8 (csdos drive A), then do this:
-
- a: <Cursor Return)
- lhx c:csxtra45* (cursor return)
-
- The file will look on drive 9 for the file, and dissolve it onto 8.

- BWE,
-
- Like Rose said, you have to use LHX to decompress the file. LHX is not
- distributed in the same archive as CS-DOS itself. You can try hunting the
- libraries for a match on LHA or LHX, and get that file. It should contain LHX
- which you can use to decompress CSXTRA45.LZH.

- I downloaded this file and disolved it to my CS-DOS disk. When I tried to use
- the program it wouldn't work. I have a 'grunged' directory. The file was
- displved to the cs-dos disk and bvunzip was installed. I then gave the dir
- cammand and the directory is really messed up. The file sizes are missing or
- wrong, the "pgm" or "seq" file types are not in line, well some are but most
- aren't. Thsi is the second time I down loaded this file and the same thing has
- happened after intstalling the program. Any help would be appreciated.

-
- If you mean you used RDIR and the directory was messed up, the only
- thing I could think of is when you installed the tools there was not
- enough memory in the ramdisk and you have to delete some files before
- adding Bruce's.
