- Your questions and comments about Novaterm are welcome here. If you haven't a
- copy of the program, download the main archive "novaterm8.1.sda" from the
- Communications transfer section as a preview. If you like what you see, you
- can grab the rest of the modules for it (in the file "nov8.1files.sda"). I'm
- aware that a few bugs have already been found by the Almighty GEnie Program
- Testers, so I'm planning to update soon. Good luck!

- Uh, which setting do you have selected? I have a Hayes compatible modem which
- is much happier with the New 1670 modem selection than Hayes 1200.
- Perhaps this might fix your difficulty?

- Hmmm. Well, take a look at the bottom 2 settings in the thing. They read
- top to bottom, 70, 1 as I recall. Try dropping the 70 figure down. Change
- it a few numbers then read a bulletinboard message to see if it helps. Most
- adjustable programs for me are happy with 59,1 setting, but everyone's
- machine, phone circumstances are a little different. And on this program,
- I've been able to use the default 70/1 setting. Stick to messing with the
- second from the bottom setting for starters. As you near the right setting,
- the garbage should decrease. Keep me posted!

- I down loaded NOVATERM8.2 dated 8/18/89. I can not run programs I down load
- with it. The number of blocks on my 1541 disk seems to be 1 greater than if
- I use XMOBUF which I used before. Do i need to use a pad stripper like before
- XMOBUF? NOVATERM is much faster and I love the options available.

- First, I assume you are using Xmodem? What programs specifically are you
- working on downloading? Perhaps the Xmodem protocol was corrupted during
- downloading. Try one of the other protocols to see if you have the same
- trouble.

- Greatings from Montreal... and here are a few questions from over here. a. Can
- NOVATERM 8.2 pulse dial a 1670 (new an old version) ? b. Is it normal that
- one cannot leave the BBS mode by pressing space or
- anything... only a re-boot works. c. Is it possible to create an 80 column
- caracter set (such as used with
- VIP XL (used now) or CBterm) ? d. What are the new enhancements planned ?
- In return, I am sending you some $$$ as I really like your terminal program.
- NOVATERM 8.2 has been made available on several local BBS' and all are
- impressed with it. (You are also getting great reviews on Q-Link and
- CompuServe :) By the way, I cannot reach your 335-0392 BBS... must be because
- of your move ??? Thst's it for now, and sorry for the E-Mail... I should have

- Again, I apologize for the lag between my calls. Seems I just missed my mail
- by a couple weeks and it got purged. I will definitely call back in a week or
- so, if you want to re-send your messages.
-
- But, to answer your questions...
-
- A) No, I didn't include an option for pulse dialing on Hayes modems. Rather
- ignorant of me! But, I've already added it to the new version I'm working on,
- which I will go over in a second...
-
- B) To abort BBS mode, you must press F1 at any prompt. It will return you to
- terminal mode if someone was using it remotely.
-
- C) 80 columns is not possible with the version you have, but again, it is a
- possibility for the next version.
-
- I'll just take a moment to preview a few things I've got going for Novaterm
- 9.0, which I'm hard at work on while I'm home for Christmas break. First,
- pulse dialing is supported. There's a new autodial screen, and the program
- now supports multiple phone book files with user-specified names (i.e. the
- phone numbers by themselves are saved to a file with a name that you specify,
- and you can change the name to load different numbers). You can do a full
- screen dump from terminal mode to the printer, disk, or a buffer file. I've
- cleaned up some of the color problems -- the text color of the menus is
- preserved even if the color has changed in terminal mode. I've made lots of
- other minor modifications, but the major things I'm putting into it are script
- file capability, RAM expander support, and possibly an 80 column terminal
- mode. I'm not too sure about the 80 columns yet, but it may be in there.
- Script files, in case you don't know, are short programs that you create and
- compile which instruct the terminal to perform automatically. For example,
- you could write a script program which would call up a board, log you in, read
- all the new messages and capture them in the buffer, and then log off. The
- program could also download and upload files, do ASCII dumps, and a number of
- other things. I have the script files working as of now, I haven't tested
- with a RAM expander yet, and I'm trying to work in the 80 columns, just to let
- you know where I'm at right now. It shouldn't be too much longer before this
- version is ready.
-
- I do want to thank those people who have shared their comments and suggestions
- about the terminal with me. Most of the modifications I've made are in
- response to user's suggestions, and they have spawned other ideas that I've
- been able to use. It really helps to improve the program. Thanks again!

- Thanks for the excellent program!!! The $harebucks are on their way.
-
- I just purchased a ZOOM MX-2400. It didn't work well using 'XMOBUF', but it

- GEnie at 2400 B. There's a +$2. surcharge where I live).
-
- Question: Theres nuttin in the docs about what the F-Key programmin' is for.
- Question: How do I add this HAYES dialling sequence before the modem
- autodials:
- ATTD,,,*70,,

- The Docs are rather inadequate... Do you send new docs after Registr.??

-
- I'm aware the docs are pretty sketchy... the reason is because any docs that
- fully describe the program would be too long to include with the program! The
- ones there now are long enough as it is... I don't have any longer docs
- written, but I have the memory map, which might be of some help.
-
- If you want to add the call waiting disabler before the number, just type it
- in before the number itself in each entry. I'm planning on adding a feature
- which will let you define dialing sequences into single characters (such as
- the ! character, similar to Telix), making it easier to tack on things like
- call waiting disable and long distance codes.
-
- I figured that F-key programming would be self-explanatory... define a string
- into a function key, and then hit that function key in terminal mode and the
- string will be sent.

- I realized that I forgot to include some very important instructions in the
- docs regarding ANSI and VT52... so you may want to capture this short message
- and spread it around to anyone you know using the program.
-
- It's not immediately obvious how to set up the terminal to use ANSI or VT52.
- Here's a step-by-step method:
-
- -- Make sure 80 column mode is enabled.
- -- Load ASC.TERMS and FONT80.IBM, and then either TERM.ANSI
- or TERM.VT52.
-
- Those two modules must be loaded for ANSI and VT52 to work properly. The first
- one adjusts the ASCII translation, and the second one provides the IBM
- graphics characters.

- Nick, I have been trying to get Nova Term to set up right with my system for
- the last 3 or 4 months and I just can't seem to get it right.
- First of all I can't for the life of me get 2400 baud working with any sort
- of consistency. It will look fine and then I will get the worst strings of
- garbage. So bad that it usually gets me dumped. I have tried so many settings
- that I'm getting blurry eyed
- I just can't get 2400.
-
- Second is I too am getting dumped whenever I attempt Ymodem downloads. Same
- reverse screen with random characters and no keyboard control. Only way out
- is to shut down and reboot.
-
- Heres just a question I have also. Can I use the 40 col. ANSI from 8.2 with
- Ver 9.0?
- I would like to have both as I like the 80 col. but I also like to use the
- 40 col. for the color ANSI. If not maybe you could write a new 40 col. ANSI
- for 9.0.
-
- One last question. Are you having any luck with the Aprotek stuff? This is
- my modem by the way. Maybe that helps to answer my earlier questions. I also
- have Jiffy Dos installed if that matters.
- I have real good luck now with Ed Bell's "Bell Term" but I like the feel of
- your program and the ANSI capability and wish I could use both.
-
- Please let me know if you have any ideas on any of these problems. I would
- be happy to write you with detailed accounts if you will tell me what you need
- to know.
-
- Any way, so as not to sound all doom and gloom, the program does work quite
- well at 1200 with standard Xmodem protocol and once I am able to work out
- these other bugs I am sure I'll use it quite often.
-
- P.S.
- I hear you are checking into the "Transactor" Feb 89 article. Is this
- helping with the 2400 baud communications?

-
- All of the problems you mentioned have been pointed out to me already -- don't
- worry, I've been working on them. I have put the Transactor modem routines
- into version 9.1 of the program, and it has improved performace at 2400 baud
- immensely. In the previous versions, 2400 baud works for some better than
- others, I think simply because of the variations among C-64's.
-
- I've also done more work on Ymodem batch protocol. I have tested that
- protocol between my two computers so many times that if it doesn't work when
- it gets out to the public, I will know it was corrupted.
-
- Version 9.1 will be available in a week or so, I hope. I have a couple of
- people screening it for bugs that I missed.
