- the same disk device such as the HD. The problem you will have is that GEOS
- will be controlling the HD from one computer and attempting to control it from
- another one also. The code for controlling the drive is not entirely contained
- within the drive like it would be if you were outside of GEOS. Part of the DOS

- Just consider yourself the king of the household. The one with the HD.

- I used t to switch my CMD HD between two computer systems. It is not the

- I asked about 1541 DOS ROM vershions about 3 times before going back
- years. I never got a good answer. But I just noticed from reading a
- text file called Bowen Comments that there was a 251968-02 ROM for the
-
- 1541B/C. I never seen a drive with this ROM. I even made a program and
-
- uploaded it to Q-link and I think to here too that will tell you if
- you have 1541 DOS, 901229-01, 901229-03, 901229-05, 251968-01,
- 251968-03, or Jiffy DOS. I asked any one if the program came back with
-
- out telling what DOS you have to please let me know. I just wanted to
- know if commodore ever put out DOS 901229-02, or 901229-04, or
- 251968-02. But now I guess the 251968-02 is in a 1541B/C drive. I got
- a 1541-II that has 251968-03 in it and says on the bottom of it,
- "c 1987 CBM
- IC ROM 251968-03
- c 1981, 1983 CBM
- IC ROM 325302-01
- IC ROM 901229-05
- as contained herein."
- So does any one know what the last 2 DOS vershions are? Maybe (or
- should I say perhaps to sound smarter?) CMD would be the best to tell
- what they are because from other post I posted no one knows.

- I will tell what I know about how the 1541 drive ROM's are
- different.
- 901229-01 I guess was the frist 1541 DOS. It had a auto utility
- loader in it. If on power up the data and clock lines are grounded it
- looks for a & file. If you have a CMD FD drive terned on at power up
- it will set a 1541 with this ROM to auto boot a & file. I guess CMD
- did not even know this. Who ever has this old rom any ways? I think it
-
- was the old one with a little lighter color then a 128. Said VIC-1541
- on it, Single drive floppy disk. It had four 2114 ram chips in it to
- get it's 2K ram.
- 901229-03 I don't know I guess they fixed some bugs. The code was
- left out for a power up auto & file loader.
- 901229-05 I guess they fixed some more bugs and this is the DOS I
- think is in most of the old style 1541 drives.
- 251968-01 They put this in a drive the same color as a 128. It was
- the same style as the old 1541's. It had a track 0 censor and the ROM
- checked for it. But you had to cut jumper three so it would work. This
-
- drive when you tern it on will bump the drive head enless you cut
- jumper three.
- 251968-02 This I only got info from a file called "bowen comments"
- I don't know what the drive looks like but they called it a 1541B or
- 1541C. The interrupt rate was changed back to 15ms, TRKNUM is over 35,
-
- Save-@ fixed, device not present fixed, sets decimal mode before
- disabling IRQ, and frist one to have copyright test at the frist page.
-
- I never seen a drive with this rom.
- 251968-03 This one they put in a 1541-II. The track 0 censer was
- out of the drive and the code for it out of the ROM. They did ground
- the pin on the CIA that test for track 0. Does any one know why
- commodore would take out the track 0 censor and even when they did
- have it you had to cut a juper?
- 325302-01 I guess this is a ROM for a 1541-II but I never seen it.
- I only seen it printed on the bottom of a 1541-II, saying that the
- drive my have it. But this drive had the 251968-03 rom.
- Does any one else know any more? Or does any one know how to get a
- hold of the person named Bowen, who wrote bowen comments text?

- I found a little more info on the 1541 DOS. From looking at the
- book called Inside Commodore DOS. I guess 901229-01 had some error
- with a speed-up in the serial bus listen routine. Bytes $EA0E to EA17
- are not the same and in the book it says three nop bytes to fill space
-
- left by speed-up to fix VC20 901229-02 ROM's. So there must of been a
- 901229-02 ROM. Then in 901229-03 I think they just changed the header
- gap at $F58D and $FCD0. don't know if there was ever a 901229-04 ROM
-
- but some time in early 1984 Commodore was shipping a new 1541
- 901229-05 rom. It fixed stack overflow problems, did not have the
- utility loader to fix initialization problems, changed the
- initialization of the serial bus, change the initialization during
- power-up, and a patch to the serial bus listen routine.
- The book Inside Commodore DOS looks like it's 901229-03 DOS but the
-
- check sum byte in the book at $FEE6 is #$FD and this is 901229-01 DOS.
-
- 901229-03 has a #$0E here and 901229-05 has a #$3E here.
- Does any one know Fred Bowen's internet address?

- There use to be a 1540 drive. I guess it was the drive for the VIC-20. It
- must of cost about $600 because when the 1541 frist came out it was about
- $600. The 1540 did not work on the 64 because it was to fast. The VIC-II
- made the 64 slower then the VIC-20. You can test this out by giving any 1541 a
- UI- then it will just speen. But it would work on a VIC-20 or in 128 fast mode
- or terning off the VIC-II chip with a poke53265, peek(53265)and239. I never
- seen a 1540. I guess if any one had one Commodore did a upgrade to the ROM.

- If you run this and get "1541b with update vershion 251968-02", please let
- me know. Or if you run it on a 1541 and it says "unrecognized drive", please
- let me know.
- This program was from Fred Bowen and I added some things to it. Maybe I
- could even have it see what vershion of CMD drive you have. But that would
- take a lot of people testing. After the program when it say unrecognized
- drive on a CMD drive you type: ?a,b,c,d it will come back with 4 numbers.
- On my CMD-200 HD the numbers were 63,208,222,82. On my CMD-20 HD it was
- 5,80,222,82. On my 16 meg RAMlink it was 8,255,156,82. On my CMD FD-4000
- it was 77,25,1,82. On my 1571 with JiffyDOS it was 56,40,169,144. The
- program still knows it's a 1571 and my 1581 has JiffyDOS too and the program
- says "1581".

- I read that the 1540 drive had a rom chip with a number on it like this.
- 325303-xx the xx being I guess 01 or 02 like that. So if you put a new rom
- chip were that chip was you would have a 1541 drive. You just had to replace
- it with a rom chip with a number 901229-xx the xx being 01 to 05.
- Does any one have a ROM chip laying around with the 325303-xx numbers? If

- 1541 JiffyDOS and the 05 version of CBM DOS. You did a lot of changes. With

- I got out my old 1541 installation for jiffyDOS and in it it says about
- the 1541"C" board. "a built-in track 1 sensor, which was included to
- eliminate the infamous "head knock" of earlier 1541's. For some reason,
- however, Commodore decided to disable the sensor, which lets the head on
- the 1541"C" rattle anyway." Well I asked Fred Bowen about this in the RTC.
- He said, "All the 'bump' stuff was greatly affected by the particular drive
- mechanism. Some of the mods (may be that was the -04 rev included patches
- for track-0 sensors, but just as we thought we'd finally get a trk-0 sensor,
- along came a cheaper drive without one :-( Manufacturing could never
- coordinate which boards were matched with which drivce mechanisms. It
- happened all the time." So I guess Commodore just was not organized enough
- to see if the drive had a track-0 sensor on it so they left them all bump.
- If they did use a drive with out the track-0 sensor with that DOS it would
- not of worked right. It could not find what track it was on. So Commodore
- just let it bump. But I but the designers of the board wanted it. But
- Commodore did not. It's easy for you to cut Jumper 3. But even if you get
- the JiffyDOS ROM for the 1541"B" it will not have this DOS patch in it.
- Even if you switch it back to the old ROM. In JiffyDOS the old ROM is the
- 901229-05 ROM. As best as I know. But CMD my of fix that.
