- Howdy! I'm looking for a decent program that I'm SURE must be in the software
- library somewhere that will balance my checkbook/savings. What's the best one
- out there?
-
- Also, where would I go to find a replacement drive door handle for a 1571?
- The only way I can insert/remove disks with mine is by having the case torn
- apart!
-
- Finally, where's a good place to get 64K VDC's at a good price, and how
- difficult are they to install?
-
- Thanks in advance... Tim

- re:64K VDC
- For most people the best way to go is to order the SSI 64K upgrade board
- and pop it into your flat C128. You might as well get it with the 64K
- ram too. If you are handy with a soldering iron and have a lot of patience
- and skill upgrading your VDC memory is as simple as desoldering the VDC
- rams, putting sockets in, and plugging in new 4464s (120-150 ns).
- That way you spend about $10, oh course, it is a pretty tedious soldering j
- job, but I get a certain satisfaction out of doing it myself. Of course
- if you mess it up you have to clean it up yourself too ;D
-
- re:checking
- I am not sure if I uploaded it here, but I have a template that I did for
- Swiftcalc 128 that I use in my business to balance my checking everyday.
- If you are interested in it drop me a note and I will upload it, if I
- haven't already.

-
- I found the hardest part of upgrading the VDC RAM was getting the old chips
- out. I initially was going to try and get them out in one piece to save for
- another possable use. The one away from the shield was fairly easy to get out
- in one piece, but the one closest to the shield required cutting the chip from
- the pins and then removing the pins one at a time. From there it was a snap to
- solder in sockets and insert the new chips. I just happened to have 2 of the
- correct RAM chips in my spare parts bin. A problem that that others may
- encounter is a minimum order from vendors who sell these RAM chips.

- Thanks for the tip on those vendors Dale. All too often, I have a project in

- Tim, The board that SSI sells is much easier to install. You have to open the
- case on the 128, remove the shielding and remove the cover over the video
- chips. You then remove the VDC chip, plug the board into its socket, and plug
- the VDC chip into the board. Put the 128 back together and you are done.

- How I did my upgrades ( I use to do quite a bit of business upgrading
- flat C128s) is first I went out and spent the money on a Radio Shack
- desoldering iron. It is the one that has a rubber tube on one end to
- do the sucking up of hot solder and a heating iron tip on the other with
- a little hole in it.
- :
- first after removing all the shields, keyboard connector, etc I remove
- the video chips from the board, especially the VDC!
- :
- second, with a pair of dykes (cutters) i cut off all the ram chip legs
- as close as possible to the board
- :
- third, now i stand the board on one end and from the back, with the Radio
- Shack desolder I suck all the solder out (and the ram chip legs come with
- it to).
- :
- fourth step is installing GOOD sockets and soldering them in. Do not
- bother with the cheap Radio Shack sockets, get some good gold plated ones
- (cost about 1.00 a piece) and install them, pop in the video ram and
- video chips and you are all set!
- :
- Tedious owrk, but there is a certain satisfaction doing it yourself.
- You can also look at it as a test drive for upgrading your REU ;D

- I will try to shed a bit of light on them for you.
-
- 1) IEEE Interface - The first Disk Drives that CBM built were for the PET
- series of computers. They decided to use a data transfer buss that was
- developed by HP and then adopted as a standard by the IEEE ( an electrical
- engineering standards organization ). This buss has 8 data lines so that one
- full byte can be transfered at a time ( this makes it a parallel buss as
- opposed to a serial buss which has to transfer 8 bits in a row to transfer a
- byte) In theory it should be 8 times faster than a serial buss with all other
- things being equil. Anyway when CBM decided to go into the home computer
- market (remember this was in the early 80's and a factory VIC-20 only had 8K
- of users RAM) they decided to go to a less expensive serial buss for their
- computers. This left many nice disk drives out there with the same DOS, but an
- incompatable data buss. This is what the IEEE Interface is for. To use one of
- theos IEEE Drives on one of the serial buss machines ( usualy the 64 or the
- 128).
-
- 2) Parallel Cable - This is for any cable that transfers a full byte at a
- time. They can vary in construction depending on their use. The IEEE
- Interface uses a parallel cable to the disk drive. Many printers use a data
- buss called the Centronics Standard, which is also parallel.
-
- 3) Read this thread - I think the word that might be confusing you in this
- phrase is 'thread'. It usualy means a group of related messages. Such as this
- Catagory / Topic is a thread. One person starts a topic and others add their
- replys. Thread is then in the context of a common thread.
-
- 4) Converted GEOS - There could be 2 different answers to this one, depending
- on which message you were reading it from. Usualy it is refering to a file
- containiging something like artwork that has been converted from another
- computers / programs format to one that will work with the GEOS program or
- visa versa. The other meaning could be refering to a general GEOS convert
- program. GEOS uses it's own special disk routines for storing and reading data
- on a disk. The standard CBM DOS cannot read these files correctly, thus the
- need to convert any GEOS file into a standard CBM DOS type file before it can
- be transfered via modem. Then after it is downloaded, it must then be
- converted back into a GEOS DOS format. The utility to do this is called
- Convert and the latest version is 2.5 (available in our library)
-
- Hope this was enough to answer your questions without going overboard.

- Yes, once again I have a couple of questions:
-
- 1) I've owned an Okimate 120 printer for a few years now, and only recently
- has it started to mess up. When I print standard text, the letters are messy
- (for example, the letter "I" would have a sort of zig-zag pattern to the
- pixels), and when I print graphics, there is a blank pixel line in between
- passes. Is this the print head finally giving out on me? If so, how
- difficult is it to replace (I just received a catalog from some company that
- carries them)?
-
- 2) I own a C-128 flat-top, and my shift keys are dying a painful death. The
- right one is completely gone, and the left one takes some pressure to work.
- What's an easy way to fix this? I tried taking the keyboard out and cleaning

- Hi :)
- If you are having sticking or dead keys it could be because the pads are
- gone or it is simply dirty. You can get a spray/cleaner from Radio Shack
- that can clean under a key. If you "gently" pry on a key it pops right
- off.
- If you wanted to really clean the keyboard then completely disassembly
- it (some soldering required) and wash the circuit board and pat it dry.
- Do not wash the keys though as the springs will rust. What you can do
- to clean the keys is wash the caps with some ivory soap and a q-tip.
- On the "carbon" part of the plunger just gently brush it with a cloth
- being carefully not to rip it. Don't use anymore pressure than you would
- on a eyeball (that gentle).
- If you have keys with weak springs you can buy one of those C16 keyboards,
- snip a little off the C16 springs and use them on the C128 (i did this for
- my Fkeys, space key, and return key)
- Radio Shack use to sell those C16 keyboards, maybe they still do.

- Well, if you have either a wordprocessor, spreadsheet or data base program,
- you can easilly create your own.
-
- Or, if you have Chris Smeet's CS/DOS, you can do the same, using its GREP
- command, with a simple call to a batch routine.
-
- All you need is a dictionary of words in uncompresed, and algorhythemed
- format. Then let the WP, spreadsheet, dbase, or GREP find the word.
-
- For speedy access most WP's have their dictionaries set up in some form
- of algorythm. However, 'simple' dictionaries can be found in the PD. I
- used this method to add thousands of new words to PW3's dictionary.
-
- Because you plan to use this to check spelling for one word at a time,
- instead of a spell checker's usual method of checking an entire document
- you won't need the compression or algorythm. Especially if your words
- are stored in ram or ramdisk. Your selection, and similarly spelled words
- should appear on screen, just about as soon as you press the RETURN key.
-
- This is one possible approach. I am certain you'll hear from others with
- more ideas!

- Well, this topic has traveled a bit but I think if you go to the libraries
- and set it to "all libraries" #41 you will be all set.
- Use the search feature and search for "word". A few SID files will be

- It has been a while but for editing of short messages I think
- "easyletter128" would do the trick. Also there are text editors by both
- Ed Bell and Ed Parry (search for uploader "ebbs") that are excellent.
- If you want a basic 128 word processor you can hack around with then
- set to Lib #8 and search for "wd".
-
- I have often wondered if it would be alright if we uploaded our
- revised spell checkers for programs such as PCiii here. After all in a

- One other thing to consider is switching your SP-1200VC into True ASCII mode.
- That would involve flipping the #3 DIP switch in the back while power to it is

- Sounds like a 128 to me. 2400 baud is not cheap. APROTEX sells a 2400 BPS
- modem for around $80.00 and a 1200 BPS for $60.00 through Tenex Computer
- Express. They claim to be Hayes Compatable (industry standard). Tenex
- Computer Express/PO Box 6578/South Bend, IN 46660 or ordering 1-800-Prompt-1.
- Anyone else know anything about this modem? I'm thinking of upgrading, too.

- Sounds about right on the prices and they work fine with the Hayes commands
-
- If she doesnt *need* 2400 you can buy new C1670 1200 baud modems from RUN

- Those plug right into the C64 or C128 and they dont need an interface.

- YLR,
-
- You are right!! I've seen where it can be done, but I'm not really sure how.
- Hopefully one of our resident dos gurus will have the answer for you.
-
- Two thought off the top of my head: (1) make a back-up of that original disk
- before you do anything, and (2) you might try cbm's unscratch program to see
- if it works. Run this on the backup copy, so if it does any damage, the
- original source is still availble.

- You may not be able to get it all back. When you issue a DOS NEW command
- (short version) here is what happens...
-
- The BAM is cleared, indicating that all blocks are now free. The first
- directory block is filled with zeros, overwriting the first 8 directory
- entries entirely. Finally, the track and sector pointer in the first directory
- block (first two bytes of track 18 sector 1) are set to 00 FF to indicate that
- there are no more directory blocks in use.
-
- Often you can get back most of a disk by using a track and sector editor and
- changing the pointers I mentioned above to point to the second directory block
- (usually located at track 18 sector 4 - 12 04 in hex). After doing that,
- immediately validate the disk and you'll get back everything EXCEPT the first
- 8 files that were on the disk. This might not work too well with a disk that
- contains copy protection, since there might be errors on the disk that will
- cause the validate to bomb out, but that can sometimes be ignored if the disk
- is never going to be written to. But again, if you're missing the first 8
- files, the software isn't likely to work (considering that it is a single
- 'program' on the disk).
-
- If you ever made a backup of the original (regardless of whether it worked or
- not), your best chance of recovery is to use a track and sector editor to copy
- track 18 sector 0 (the Header/BAM block) and track 18 sector 1 (first
- directory block) from the backup to the original.

- I have done this before and it certainly is not the easiest way but do
- everything Doug mentioned. Then make a map of all the tracks and
- sectors on a piece of graph paper. As you trace the files remaining
- in the directory AFTER the validate, cross off each track and sector
- occuppied by the remaining files. After that is done you will have
- a "map" of remaining blocks. By figuring out where your first file
- started on a blank disk you might be able to trace it down by finding
- the beginning block and following all the sector/track links. Once
- you do that you can write the directory again to point to the beginning of
- the file and to change the needed bytes in the bam.
-
- A lot of work but you can restore by hand most if not all out your
- disk. I did this on a 1581 which although 5x larger than a 1541 is actually
- easier because files are layed out in sequential order on tracks so the
- beginning and ending of files are much easier to find (vs something saved
- on a 6 or 10 interleaved disk).
-
- Time estimate: 2-3 hours to save the disk.

- The previous replies basically covered the tedious process of trying to
- recover your disk, so there isn't alot more to add. The one thing that I would
- like to add though,is that the best utilities I have ever used for such work
- are part of the Maverick package. These are better than the average sector
- editor you are likely to download. Also, I want to restress the importance of
- making a duplicate of the damaged disk first and then only working on that

- In addition, there is a program on Maverick that will do this all for you
- automatically. It has save me more than once, particularly with my hard drive.
- Most definatly make a nibbled back up of the disk, then run the recover
- program from Maverick. When it is finished you will have a disk with all files
- named file1, file2, file 2 etc. You can then go back and figure out which
- files are which. Keep in mind that ALL files will be recovered, so those that
- you scratched will be recovered too. Best of luck, and the Maverick utilities
- are well worth the purchase cost. Available from Software Support

- The curse of using a 24 pin printer with 9 pin software!
- What is happening is PrintShop is sending codes to the printer that tell it
- to use 9 pin mode mode vs. 24 pin mode. It is also sending graphics to the
- printer as 9 pin graphics. The reason it is being elongated is the 24 pin
- printer is printing at a low density where three of it's pins are striking
- the
- paper (vertically) for every dot a 9 pin dot matrix would. Because the 24
- pin
- printer has a taller head vertically it makes a taller line every pass. So
- everything is elongated in 9 pin mode. You have two options
- 1)use different software
- 2)write a patch, find a patch, or call Broderbund to see if they have a patch
- (not likely)

- I'm trying to upload an attached file to someone who uses an IBM machine. I
- wrote a lengthy paper on GEOS, then converted it to PETASCII with 'WRONG IS

- pieces with '64/128 SEQ SLICE' and uploaded the programs as attached files in

- It sounds like all of the steps you are taking are reasonable ones. The only
- advice I can give is, look at the file after each step to make sure that it
- made it through the previous step OK. I apply a similar principle when I am
- shipping files to other computers via. the Big Blue Reader. Typically, it is
- a 5-10 minute unicycle ride to the destination computer, and while that isn't
- far, it is a pain if I get there, my files are corrupted, I have to come back,
- etc.... So, once I copy the file to an IBM disk, I copy it back to a C= disk
- under a different name, and look at it to make sure it made the transfer to
- IBM disk OK.
-
- Apply similar principles to what you are doing, to figure out just which step
- is giving you trouble.
-
- The only other suggestion I could give would be to try archiving the files.
- the lhz format of CS-DOS is (I believe) standard, and can be dissolved by
- utilities on MS-DOS machines. (But I haven't tried that, so I don't know.)
-
- Good luck!

- This can be a very frustrating event, but you might want to try a few things:
-
- Take a smaller file (or a portion) of 'converted to ASCII' text and upload in
- regular mail, first. Enter the TO, CC, etc information then at the first
- prompt ( 1> ) type *UP. Ship the file (transfer) it without any protocol.
- Hit Control C, and then at the next prompt, type *L (for list).
- See if the text is OK.
-
- If it isn't, then you are possibly sending some non-printable characters that
- are being recognized by GEnie's QuickCom Mail. Also make sure that a hard CR
- is before position 79 on your line length.
-
- Send me a sample of your file using the UP command if you are still having a
- problem, and I'll have the Systems people take a gander.

- You should try doing a keyword search in the library. I just did on the word
- 'ascii'. Came up with quite a list, including:
-
- 3783 ASCII CONVERT128 Desc: Convert Files to Pet or ASCII
- 3784 ASCII CONVERT64 Desc: Convert Files to Pet or ASCII
- 3271 ASCII/PETSCII CONVERTER Desc: SEQ file utility by Dennis Larson.
- 6129 CBM-IBM.EXE Desc: Petascii <--> Ascii converter,
- 5382 CONVERT Desc: Fast ASCII to PETASCII converter
- 532 PET ASCII TO REAL ASCII Desc: Converts PETSCII to REAL ASCII
- 3655 TRANSLATOR 1.2 Desc: PETSCII <---> ASCII file converter.
-
- 9917 ZED-128V075.SFX Desc: 80 column text editor for C=128
-
- To do your own search, exit the BB and you will be at page 65. Just select
- option 3 for the libraries, then 3 for the search, and enter whatever keyword
- you want to search on. Make sure you open your capture buffer of your term
- first. BTW, if you want a recommendation from the list above, get #9917, which

- If you can find a C64 or C128 BASIC program that does the Petscii-Ascii
