-
- From the command panel press the 'power online' switch then you can select
- your desired print pitch and then your NLQ Type Style. This is one way to
- select at least the italics. To do the Bold, underline etc., there are some
- basic program routines in the manual. I'll post them if you'd like, but almost
- any word processor can do that within it own program.
-
- For a manual you could also call Star Micronics for a manual for about $12 I

- A.PLATT3, if you are talking about the file I think you're talking about,
- there is now a hitch. As I recall, the interface that you built from the
- instructions in that file requires the use of a digital switch, from Dallas
- Semiconductor. There was a message in the usenet newsgroup COMP.SYS.CBM a few
- weeks back about it that said that Dallas took that chip off the market

- One thing to watch for is the keycaps. Only the early 128D keycaps match the

-
- I have a 1351 mouse. It doesn't work. Well, at least it doesn't work right.
-
- It will move the cursor up and down, but won't move it side to side.
-
- I am using this mouse on a flat 128.
-
- I know the mouse itself is good, since I have checked it out on my 64
-

-
- I thought maybe it was a bad CIA chip (6526), so I swapped it with another
-
- one I had lying around. I also re-soldered the bottom legs of CIA socket
-
- in case there was a loose connection.
-

- On either side of the 'wheels', as you put it, are optical transmitters and
- receivers. The spokes 'break' the light path, and this information is fed to
- chip inside the mouse to be decoded as movement. There could be any number of
- things wrong... bad transmitter or receiver, chip could be bad, or you may be
- having a problem with the SID chip in your computer; there is also an analog
- switch chip in your computer that the mouse input lines run through, and this
- could be going bad. Also remotely possible that one of your CIA chip could be
- going bad, since it controls which port input gets fed through the analog
- switch; this latter would probably also show up as a keyboard problem as well,
- though.
-
- Try testing the mouse on another computer, if possible. If it does work on
- another machine, the problem is in your computer. At that point, try to locate
- a program that uses the mouse in the alternate joystick port. If it works
- there, then the SID is okay; if not, then you're still faced with the
- possibility of any of the three chips I mentioned being bad.
-
- If the mouse doesn't work on another computer, then your chances of fixing it
- are pretty slim, since the parts are not of the 'off-the-shelf' variety.

- The transmitter and or recevier LED's probabiliy is why your mouse don't work
- in one direction. I fixed about 5 mouses and that is all that was wrong. I got
- the other LED's for a 1350 mouse, a joy stick mouse. I don't know were you can
- get the LED's. If some one has a nother 1351 thata don't work I am sure one of
- the 8 LED's will be good. The CMD mouse only has 4. One LED has 3 lines to it.
- So in must be 2 bilt in to one LED. Just unsolder them and put good ones in.
- If you can find good ones. I am sure this is whats wrong. You can even use the
- LED's out of a Amiga mouse.

- There are 2 4066 chips in your commodore 128/64. They are just a chip with 4
- switchs in them. Put 5 volts on one pin and two other pins will connect. One
- is used for the color RAM to switch 4 address lines. the other is used to
- switch the 2 SID chip POTX and POTY for the up down, or left right moveing of
- a mouse or paddol. So the other 4066 connect port one or two to the POTX and
- POTY of the SID chip. A CIA will tern on of off the connections. If you have
- two paddols that put in to one joy stick port you could test it the 4066 is
- getting the connections to the SID chip. I seen at left 5 commodore mouses and
- if they did not move up or down, left or right it was just the sensors, like
- the LED's in the mouse's. I bet this is a lot of peoples problums with there

- The 4066 in my C-128 is a M4066, made by OKI. Designated as U2,

- You could build a null modem cable and attach the C-64 and PC to each

- I use a Xetec Super Graphix printer interface. It has an 8k buffer to help
- speed up printing tasks. I noticed in a for-sale add recently that the Gold

- "I bought a used 64 a few years ago and along with it came

-
- It plugs into the cartridge expansion port on the C-128. It should have an
- RCA jack for audio out. You can either run a cable from this directly into
- the aux input on an amplifier or the audio input on you monitor. Originally,
- this came with a cable that coupled it into the "audio in" line on the C64's
- monitor port, which feeds thru the SID chip. This allowed the sound to also
- be routed thru the RF modulator, so TV users would have speech come out the
- speaker there, as sounds from the SID chip do.
-
- As to how to use it, I am uncertain. If it had an onboard ROM, it might patch
- in a new command or set of commands. I suggest after plugging it in you try
- something like:
-
- SAY "HELLO"
-
- If that fails (giving a syntax error) chances are it uses the standard BASIC
- 2.0 commands for opening a channel and sending commands or data to it.
- However, finding the device number (and possibly the proper secondary
- channel) could be tricky if this is the case.
-
- Hopefully, someone else with a Magic Voice module, or at least the manual,
- will step forward and offer you more help.
-
- BTW, the cart port opening on the top of the Magic Voice (beneath the hinged
- door[s]), is a cart port pass-thru. Most devices that use the cart port can
- be plugged into the Magic Voice there and work in conjunction with it
- (providing their address does not conflict with the MV).
-
- If you happen to decide to sell it cheap, keep me in mind.
-
- P.S. - That should have read "cartridge expansion port of the *C64 or* C-128
- up at the top. I expect it may only work in 64 mode on a 128, however.

- Since U113 is close to the cassette port and #1 is on the outside edge of the

- Unlike the brick C-64 power supplies, I don't think the 1541][/1581 power
- supplies burn up the attached drive; one of the voltages just goes dead and
- that's it. Therefore, I don't think there's a need to have somebody wire up
- an expensive "surge arrestor", or whatever it's called.
-
- If, God forbid, your drive power supply does crap out, it is very to get a
- replacement. The 1581 uses +5V and +12V (the standards in the computer
- industry), and I've seen many open frame power supplies for really cheap
- prices (<$20) from a number of electronics vendors. From there, you'd need a
- case to put it in, and you'd have to use the drive-side power cord from the
- dead power supply, as the connector appears to be a proprietary one. An older
- <150 watt PC power supply is also fine for this purpose.

- Putting switches in the 128D is as "easy" as it is with the 1451 or 71 self
- standing drive. On the main board on the left (looking towards the front)
- edge of the Drive you will see the "normal" (I-I) half pads. These are a
- circle that is cut into with a small strip of printed circuit joining them.
- You need to attach the leads to two switches to each side of the pads. You can
- use three wires as the left side of the pads are joined together. I mounted my
- small Radio Shack switches in the plastic front of the 128D just to the right
- of the name plate. You need to CUT the small trace that joins the pads to put
- the switches online. Look under other drive topics the 1451 information for
- more on this to help you know what the pads look like. If both switches are
- open your in drive 11. If both are closed drive 8. either one open with other
- closed you'll have 9 or 10. I have found this to be a great help with Geos as
- I use a 1581 boot disk and need the 1571 built in to be drive 11 for TopDesk.
- OR if you don't want to open up your computer and go poking around get the
- file for disk swapping that I uploaded here. It will let you change the
- numbers of any two drives online it is in basic for the 64 but works just fine
- on the 128 you could make it a auto load to put you in that mode when ever you
- turned the 128 on. Hope this helps ..Steve :)

- Thanks Steve! I will definitely try the procedure you described. I seems
- pretty harmless. I'll let you know if I run into any problems. By the way,
- while we're on the topic of the 1571, do you know where I could find the 1571
- drive controller chips 2114 and 2016? I'm having trouble writing to my drive
- (data gets corrupted), and somebody suggested that the trouble probably was
- related to one of those chips. In view of their low cost, I guess it wouldn't
- harm to replace them. (I tried cleaning the drive heads, to no avail).

- Might be hard to find such a part unless you can get it from someone who has a
- junked drive that they are parting out. But as long as you still have the
- cracked part, why not repair the crack with superglue? As long as you let it
- set sufficiently long, repairing that way should hold. Tape, on the other
- hand, gives as it is stressed, which is why that generally won't work for this

- PaperTyger here is one solution that I have used on my crack 1541-II knob. I
- took epoxy and placed in the cracks and then taped it all together. After the
- poxy dried I removed the tape and carefully slid it back on to the disk drive.
- Another solution would be to use a pair of needle nose pliers (while you are
- waiting for the epoxy to dry) or if you can find an old radio or television
- volume control knob with a "D" shaped hole try and see if it will fit.
