- About 18 months ago, I bought a brand new Magnavox monitor, an 8764, and
- after about three months the upper left corner started having a blue "spot"
- about 1.5" in diameter, but only half was showing. (The other half was
- outside the border of the monitor.) Since this monitor was still under
- warranty, I brought it back to where I bought it, and told the person who took
- it what was wrong with it. After 3 week I got it back and it seemed OK at
- first, but after about 5 days it started again. Again I took it to the repair
- shop, which took another 4 weeks to try to find out what was wrong. They told
- me they could not find anything wrong with it, and it had to be in my
- computer. The only problem was that the spot was there even if the computer
- was not hooked up to the monitor. I plugged it in at the store, and after
- about 2 hours the spot showed up. and again they tried to fix it. They
- finally told me it needed a new picture tube, and that was not covered under
- the warranty. After talking to the Manager, she finally agreed to give me a
- new monitor. Well, tonight about 3 hours ago this monitor started doing the
- same thing, but this time it is in the middle of the screen and about 4" in
- diameter. The spot does not move if you change the vertical or horizontal
- width. Does anyone else who uses a Magnavox have this problem and found out
- what was making it do this, and how to fix it. The warranty just ran out on
- this monitor a few weeks ago, and from what I have heard they still charge
- almost $ 400.00 for a new one. If I only use dark colors it is not as
- noticable, but when I use GEOS it is VERY bad. I hope somebody could tell me
- this is ony a minor thing that can easily be fixed.

- How much did you pay for the 8764 monitor??? They aren't even close to
- being worth $400 if these are the 640x200 RGBI monitors. There were
- problems with the Magnavox monitors (I know, I made the mistake of
- buying one myself) and that is why not too long ago they were basically
- blown out the doors at reduced rates. BTW: I can't image a picture
- tube NOT being covered under a warranty as long as it wasn't cracked.
-
- As for the spots all I can guess is a gun is not aligned properly
- and the image you are seeing is actually where the blue gun is
- off target over a wide area. First thing I would probably do is
- find another repair shop.

- David,
-
- This is the type of problem that Quality Assurance at Magnavox should
- have prevented, and probably is working on to fix.
-
- I'd recommend taking the time to determine who is the current President
- at Magnavox. Then write to him, describing the prob, as you did above.
-
- A corporation like Magnavox will probably send you a replacement.
-
- On the out chance that they do not resolve this to your full satisfaction,
- then I'd suggest a call to Ralph Nader's Group. He usually clears up
- these sort of things. However, with Magnavox it will not come to this.

- I bought the Magnavox at a local Sears store where I bought my computer. When
- I bought it, I paid $ 399.98 + tax, and I called them today, and they are now
- asking $ 368.98 + tax. I forgot to mention that this time when I turn the
- monitor off for about 5-10 min. the spot is not there when I turn it back
- on, however it reapears after about 15-20 min. Other than this problem, I have
- been VERY happy with my Magnavox. I will try to write Magnavox and see if
- that will help.

- D.SIMMOMS13,
- As a SEARS Audio/Video technician I know the frustration you must feel.
- Somewhere in the back of my feeble mind I think I read a Service Flash about
- your problem and for the last three days I have been racking that feeble
- pebble in hopes of remembering what it said. No luck :< I even went so far
- as to look through all the papers I have been storing over the past six years
- and still have not found anything. Maybe I'm wrong about seeing a fix for
- your problem.
-
- When all else fails, go to a SEARS SERVICE Center ( not the store ) and
- ask if anyone there has heard of your problem or could the find out something
- about the problem. They (service people) may have to contact the people that
- service the computer monitors for help.
-
- Last of all, find your owners manual and check this but I think that the
- CRT (picture tube) has a two year warranty on it but you may be responsible
- for the labor cost. You might also have to produce your receipt as proof of
- date of purchase/exchange.
-
- If all this fails to bring you satifaction, write a letter to the
- Customer Relations Department, SEARS, Sears Tower, Chicago, Il. (I will deny
- ever having told you to write to The Towers.)
-
- Good luck.

- I believe you can still order the pens in multi-color packs. As for

- Just takes a syringe, since the ones for humans are nearly impossible

- It is thicker than one for a human, but works well enough for most

- It is true most of the problems seem to be with Common Sense but if you

- Hi :)
- The best thing to do is buy a Swiftlink cartridge from CMD and then buy
- a new ($80) or used ( >$40> 2400 baud modem. The advantage being that you
- can always upgrade to any modem brand you want but still get to keep the
- expensive part of the investment (Swiftlink) when upgrading modems.
- With prices falling so fast on 9600 modems you can bet within a year or so
- they will be down to $120 or so.
-
- Unless your GEnie bill is $50+ and you do a lot of downloading I would say
- keep your current modem, get the Bellterm software (just waiting for your
- e-mail) and use the Volks. A 2400 vs 1200 modem will not save you much
- money in chat areas or BBs, only in the S/L.

- Your settings are pretty much wrong. Use 8 bits, 1 stop bit, and
- whatever the default handshake setting is. I believe all of the
- settings you want are defaults. However, the parity would not make
- a whole lot of difference because George Hug's wedge, which BellTerm
- uses, renders that irrelevant. Matter of fact,
- I think it does the same to the bit count too, tho I'm not totally
- sure about that anymore. I do know BT works with that modem though,
- because I tested with it. And here is one more thing... if it dialed,
- you are set because that is all the 'support' that is required for
- that modem. After that it is the modem to stand or fall on its own.
- Let us know how you make out when you set for 8 bits though! That
- modem IS flaky. One other suggestion... try ST/R term, which was
- written for that line of modems, and I found it a solid term too.
- Sorry about the complicated docs. That is kind of a trademark of

- The only one which should make a difference you would have to have already
- used, the dialer. Everything else is the same. All of the page.1 files
- except def.page.1 or whatever they are called, are pretty much extra
- as I recall. RAMDOS should install automatically if you have an REU,
- but I don't know if they sent you RAMDOS on the disk or not. I did not
- pack it when I made up the original disks because something in its docs
- or upload notice forbade distribution or something, but you'll need that
- to use RAMDOS. It is whatever the current version of RAMDOS is, and I did
- not write that program. But for your settings, stick with 8n1.. that is,
- 8 bit words, no parity, 1 stop bit. That is what you need for GEnie.

- Jan.. the ramdos.bin4.2 is the program that bellterm will look for if you have

- program in the library called Ramdisk.sfx which has the ramdos.bin4.3 for the

-
- Jan: That file is a binary file. You can't load and run it. It is
- meant to be loaded by other programs. It is the heart of RAMDOS. Do
- you have an REU (Ram Expansion Unit). If so, and you want to use RAMDOS,
- then you would need RAMDOS 4.2 BIN. If you don't have an REU, it would
- do you no good because that is the only way this file will work... with an
- REU. BellTerm loads this file for you if it senses the REU present. Does
- that help at all? ;^)
-
- BTW, the 'mad.reu' and 'mod.reu' also require the ram expansion unit, but
- these ones do NOT require or even use RAMDOS 4.2 BIN. I know it is
- probably confusing right now, but these use the REU in a different way. I
- can't even think of a good comparison to help make things clear. But
- you must have an REU to use either of these files.

- Jan.. are you talking about Bellterm not loading the Ramdos file? It may be
- looking for the file as another name.. some programs look for it as RAMDOS128
- others are written to look for anything called RAMDOS.BIN4.X, etc. Ed or Jbee
- would have to answer the question as to why Bellterm isnt loading that
- program, but since you dont have an REU, that is why it isnt loading it. An
- REU is more basically known as the 1750 or 1764 Ram Expansion device. It can
- be configured as an additional 'drive', with virtual memory, sort of. You can
- download to it, etc, then transfer the files to a 'real' drive afterwards.
- Basically, it helps speed up your transfer time, in a way, like a hard drive
- would do.. DONT try to run the ramdos.bin file as a program.. its not for that
- purpose. :> Hugs

-
- No, that is why you can't use RAMDOS or the REU modules (MAD.REU or MOD.REU)
- BellTerm works just fine without an REU installed. That is how I usually
- use it on my system.
-
- There is something we don't have or know about your setup or what you are

- I bought a null modem adaper from Radio Shack today in the hopes I can
- simply plug in my Omnitronix interfaces into it, one on each end. I have
- 1 male and 1 female connect, and this adapter is a male/female pass thru.
- The pinout is as follows:
-
- Male DB25 Female DB25
- 1 1
- 2 3
- 3 2
- 4 5
- 5 4
- 6 and 8 20
- 20 6 and 8
- 7 7
-
- Will this work as I want? I am looking for something very EASY that I can
- do without getting any dirt on my hands. I want to put my omnitronix in
- my 64C, and into this adapter, and my other interface into my modem, and
- my modem into the other end of the adapter and use this link for null
- modem stuff. Can someone verify my logic before I burst the bubble (wrap)
- on this unit. It was only $5 (part # 26-1496) so it is no big deal any
- way, but it might be the lazy/dumb person's null-modem hookup.

- Ed- At a glance the NULL modem pinout looks OK to me. I can't guarantee
- offhand that the pinout looks right, 'cause I don't have the right reference
- materials on me... a "bare bones" null modem only needs four connections,
- actually, I think 1 and 7, and then with 2 and 3 crosswise, but I'm not sure.
- However, I have used a Radio Shack NULL modem for file transfers before (with
- other types of computers, but then, that's what the Omnitronix interface does
- for you-- I've also used other NULL modems hooking a 64 to a SUN workstation),
- and it works fine.
-
- I'm a little confused, though, why do you want to put the modem in when you
- are connecting the two computers? Generally a NULL modem is used in place of
- a modem... you only need the modem if you are going over phone lines.
- Basically, unless I'm confused about what you are trying to do, the connection
- should be:
-
-
- 64--Omnitronix--NULL modem--Omnitronix--64
-
- At that point, boot up a term program on both 64's, set the baud rate the
- same, and what you type on one 64 should show up on the other. In fact, to
- each 64, the other 64 looks like the "host."

- Sorry to say that I do not know the 8032. I started out on a 128, so know it

-
- It would be my suggestion that you contact TPUG, since they seem to be a
- warehouse for programs for most all of the Commodore 8 bit machines, which I
- assume the 8032 to be.
-
- The current address for TPUG is:

- I use an 8032 everyday in my auto repair business. I use it to keep track of
- my customer appointments. It displays a week-at-a-glance on the screen on
- which I may enter my customer's names. From each of these entries, I can
- switch to another screen that displays more info on the customer, such as
- address and phone number, the vehicle description and the repairs that are
- needed. This is about all I use the 8032 for. This way, I don't tie up a 128
- to do the same job. This is a program that I wrote myself, just for my
- purpose. It could be adapted very easily to any other type of business also.
- You are allowed up to ten names per day, with a maximum of 5 on Saturday and
- Sunday. for most small businesses, this would be adequate. The program is very
- fast, it is 100% machine language. When scrolling from week to week, data is
- loaded in from the drive for each week. It is fast enough that it only takes
- about 1/2 second to load in a whole weeks worth of data. It's about as fast as
- Superbase running on a 128 with a 1571 would be. Eventually, I will be making
- the changes needed to allow it to run on a 128 and use all the hardware that a
- 128 can use, such as the CMD units. Although, I'll just keep on using it on
- this old 8032. It gets the job done just fine.

- There is a port on the 8032 for connecting a modem through an rs-232
- interface, but I think it would be hard to locate an interface. The next step
- would be to come up with a good terminal program. In our local user group, we
- have about 25 disks full of PD programs for the PET/CBM computers and I don't
- recall seeing any terminal programs. My guess would be that telecomputing
- wasn't real popular until the 64 got going strong. I'm sure that someone good
- with hardware could adapt an interface for the 64 to work with the 8032. But
- finding a schematic would also be difficult. As for the TPUG group in Canada,
- they might be a good source, but I've spoken with several of them personally
- at the Toronto World of Commodore show last December, and they really don't
- have much or remember much about the 8032 believe it or not. The reason I
- was talking to them about the machine was because mine just happens to have
- an add-on board inside it from Madison Computer. This is called a Z-RAM board.
- It adds an additional 64K to the computer and also contains a Z-80 chip for
- using C/PM. Nobody knew anything about the board. I wanted to find some
- documentation on it and also try to locate a C/PM boot disk for it. Someday
- I'll run across this stuff.

- I'm building a curcuit that requires the reset line to be brought to zero
- line potential (ground). I'm used to the regular 1541 (short & long boards)
- but I have no schematics for the "C" version. I just need to know where on
- the board I can patch in to install a reset switch. I have tried pin 34 on UC3
- (6522) but it gives unstable results due to it being driven by an XOR gate.
- Sometimes it does not get dragged to ground quickly enough to give a full
- reset 100% of the time. Results of using this pin were good under repeated
- presses of the switch, but the initial press was rarely caught (ie, the first
- time I hit the button it missed the reset but hitting it further caught 100%
- of the time.) Should I let the system sit for a few seconds and try the reset
- again it missed the first press again. This circuit has had no problems on
- either a long or a short board 1541; I cannot determine why the "C" is giving
- such problems and do not have schematics for the "C" drive.

- In the best intrests of isolation, to wit, keeping the circuit internal to the
- drive and not allowing the 'reset' signal to get out to the buss I would like
- to find a point after the first hex buffer from the plug so that when I chain
- more than one drive, I don't reset all of them wi with the controlled
- grounding from this circuit. Having some isolation from the buss was the idea
- when I looked at the schematics for the long and short boards for the 1541.
- I can achieve the same in a 1571 and 81 being as the way commi designed there
- circuit stayed more or less the same as the equipment evolved, short of
- verifing on the "C" 1541. :/ I have finaly located a schematic for the 1581
- from SAMS PHOTOFACTS and have found what I needed to know for the reset line,
- now if I could do the same for the "C" version of the 41, it would make this
- project complete.
