- There seems to be a little bug in gateway64 that is quite annoying when
- running a document from a disk with the aparent application on another drive.
- It seems like gateway tries to load the parent application into the disk
- drive
- that has t e document on it and you get a disk full error message even if
- you
- only have 30kb's used on the disk. I've seemed to bypass this problem on a
- ramdrive partition if I use Dual Top V2.5 and change the Gareway filename to
- 'DESK TOP' but it doesn't always work, and it never works with RamLink.
- Anybody have any suggestions? I've tried CMD's BBS but there never seems to
- be a tech online when I'm on it. (sorry for the spelling, just getting used
- to
- this stuff)

- Yes, we're aware that this occurs. The problem is actually in GEOS itself,
- where I've seen it occur many times. I think it tends to happen more with
- gateWay due to the three drive support. The author, in rewriting gateWay, is
- looking for a way to squelch this problem, but for now, the best way to avoid
- it is to either make sure that the application and document are on the same
- drive, or launch the application first, then open the document.
-
- As for the CMD BBS, there is NEVER a Tech online for CHAT. The BBS is located
- in our communications room at CMD, which is a room where only machines live
- (and few humans dare enter). Questions should be left on the appropriate
- message board to be answered by us when we get online. Our schedule usually
- does not allow us to get online at work, so most of this is done from our
- homes in our 'spare' time, as is the case with our support here and on 'that
- other service'.

- Thanks for opening topics here. Is there any way to rearrange files on
- gateway> Is there any way to duplicate an existing file on one drive without
- copying it to another drive, renaming it,transferring it back to the first
- drive and scratching it on the second drive? As you can see, the second
- question takes 4 steps in GateWay, 1 in Geos. The first xcannot be done
- without scratching the files and recovering them in the desired order--which I
- consider a risky proposition.

- Hold down the C= key and then click on the left side (icon) of the file you

- JBEE has it right. That procedure should be covered in Section 3 of the manual
- (going by memory as I don't have a manual handy).
-
- As for duplicating a file, no there is no way to do this currently. The author
- says he'll provide a gateWay document to do this later on.
-
- Also, about getting files in 'order' - you might try using DIRMANAGER, which
- is a GEOS application that can sort your directory alphabetically and by
- filetype. I use it regularly.

- Problem - RAMLink/REU/gateWay
-
- I've recently added a 512k REU to my system and I am now having a
- problem using it with gateWay. Before I added the 512k REU, I had
- gateWay set up with the kernal patches, and everything was okay.
- After adding the 512k REU, I followed the procedure for "Combined RAM
- Expansion" on pages 7 & 8 of the gateWay manual, and with the NORMAL/
- DIRECT switch in the DIRECT position, gateWay crashes at the "Welcome
- to the GATEWAY ... " screen. It will complete boot-up with the switch
- in the NORMAL position, but selecting the RAMLink shows the Fuel Gage
- going thru the roof. The Info Box contains erroneous data, and reformat-
- ting the RAMLink does not help.

- Please Help!

- About that problem booting with the 512K REU...You must make sure that the
- NORMAL/DIRECT switch is in DIRECT mode when you execute MakeBoot while
- creating your boot disk. You should also be creating that new boot disk from
- GEOS, as you previous gateWay boot disk has the RL/GEOS Kernal patches
- installed. Overall, I avoid using the 'combined' RAM method, it's just too
- hard to handle extra devices. I suggest using the standard RAMLink method, and
- if you are going to use your REU with other programs, just make that DACC
- bigger (2048 blocks for a 1750).

-
- Hi-
-
- Well, I got GateWay128 yesterday, and already I have some comments and
- questions. (It doesn't take me long to come up with them, as Gary Farmaner
- knows.)
-
- (1) There were references in the manual which are very tantalizing to the GEOS
- programmer. First, there was a reference to the flag in the header which says
- an appliation supports three drives. Which flag is this? Is it a standard
- BSW flag, or a GateWay standard?
-
- The second was the very last paragraph in the manual, which hinted at the
- technical info for GateWay documents. It stated that they start at $6000; I
- assume that they get to use the full `8K from $6000 go $7f3f that is usually
- the background screen? Also, it mentioned a jump table in GateWay. Does
- there exist any documentation on this jump table, and the routines it points
- to? I.e., what address to call routines that do what, using what parameters
- and returning what values where, etc.
-
- I have to say, I really like the GateWay document structure, with the ability
- to add them to the GateWay! Hats off to Paul for taking full advantage of the
- GEOS VLIR file type.
-
- (2) Is there any way to display file modification dates en masse? I know I
- can get them by looking at the info box, but I would like to be able to list a
- bunch of files with dates, so I can know which ones in my RAMdisk have been
- modified since the last time I saved them to disk.
-
- (3) I have not been able to get any form of RBOOT to work with GateWay.
- According to the manual, 128 RBOOT from the original GEOS boot disk should
- work, but it doesn't; nor does the rboot command from the geoDebugger. It is
- a lifesaver that when reloading GateWay from disk, the RAMdisk stays intact,
- but still since I lock the machine up all the time it was nice with the
- deskTop to have instant re-load.
-
- (4) I may or may not have had trouble getting the switcher to work. I mean, I
- have had trouble, but I think I may have done something screwey in there, and
- I haven't RTFMed enough yet to be eligible to ask a question. :)

- Hi, Doug!
-
- Is it me, or is gateWay 128's chooser really crash-prone? 9 times out of
- ten,
- when I change print drivers, and click on the disk icon, the cursor vanishes
- for good. I thought maybe I was loading too-large drivers, but this happens
- with the standard BSW drivers.
-
- I'm using a 128D, HD-40, 8MEG RAMLink with RL DOS V. 1.40, and a 1750 REU in

- I left in the Ramlink "tip" topic a detailed procedure that Doug told me

- I set up GW with the CBM 1541,the RL drive and the RAM 41-71 drivers. As it

- the CBM
- and RL.Drive #3 accesses the other 2 when I open it.It even reads the back of
- my discs in a 1541 drive??
-
- Where have I gone wrong??It was running fine before. It did cut the trace or
- the PC board.
-
- ---*****************************************************--- My other question
- is,now that I have additional native partitions in my RL how do I open them?
- Just as If I was opening GEOS??Is there an additional address?
-
- The Genealogy program has some files with the same names but different

-
- I noticed that none of these can be opened directly from Gateway.

- Mike,
-
- I think what may be happening here is that when a file of the same name as one
- that already exists get written, the new file overwrites the existing one.
-
- DOS will not allow two files of the same name to exist on the same device.
-
- So, if two different files use the same name, then they will have to be

- Are you given a configuration option for a dual drive? If so, using drives 0

- I would skip the cartridge WP programs too! They tend to be very limited
- and there is hardly any support for new printer drivers.
-
- I would look at Paperclip III. It can be easily file copied and run from
- any partition and you can alter the printer drivers to work with any

- every kind of disk drive (including Ramlink) there is!
-
- I do not personally use or like The Write Stuff 64/128much, but it is a
- superior program with all the bangs and whistles. It boots very fast into
- the text editor (far faster than PCiii) and with a Ramlink I imagine it would
- be almost like turning on a cartridge for speed if run from Ramlink.

-
- If you want to add a cartridge most of the newer ones sell for $70. That is
- pretty close to what you will pay for a used C-1750 REU.
-
- Now here is an idea, if your program only supports one or two single 1541
- drives and will not let you combine all the data and program files on one
- disk to make it easy for you a REU *just* might be the thing you need.
-
- Using the REU you could set the REU up as a ramdisk 1541/71 and then set up
- a Ramlink 1541 partition as the boot disk for your genealogy program.
- Geos should recoginse the Ramlink 1541 and ramdisk 1541 as two seperate
- drives (a+b).
- This should eliminate any disk swapping and work around the problem of your
- program only working with only (2) 1541 instead of letting you use a 1581
- driver with both the data and program files on one disk.
-
- Now the second question would be "I have to load the ramdisk everytime I boot
- up, what can I do".
- I would put a copy of the ramdisk on a second 1541 partition.
- Boot Geos from your "boot" 1541 partition, switch to the second 1541
- partition,
- file copy the 1541 partition to the ramdisk (because everything is in the
- ramlink this should take no time at all!), then exit to the first 1541
- partition and run your genealogy program.
-
- How does that sound? Anyone else have any ideas?

- Secondly, thank you to the person at CMD who sent me the replacement DOS

- retention. Is this because I dont have any SIMMS installed?
- Next, I cannot get GW 64 to load at all. The 128 doesnt have Jiffydos
- installed in the drive (YET!), and as such loads REALLY slow in 64 mode.
- Again, is this because I dont have those damn SIMM's. In the letter written
- to me, it said I needed the RAM unit as a Foreign partition and the SIMM as
- accesable memory. Is this true?
- Im pretty sure someone at CMD is wishing they never heard of me or of New
- Zealand, with all these probs Ive had!
- One thing though: when I did get it working, gateway was a real smooth
- baby.... too bad its like the killer car 'Christine' (guess what Ive been
- reading!) and has its own personality, and stops working on its own.
- Hope SOMEONE can help me, PLEASE!!!!!!!!!

- !! Yes... that one from New Zealand!!!!!!!!!

- I think your main problem is not having any SIMMs installed!
-
- Once I partitioned my Ramlink like CMD-DOUG suggested (see the TIPS
- topic in Cat#12 posted by Howie) all my gateWay problems disappeared.
- I know there are a few buglets left in gateWay but for the most part
- it is pretty solid. I use it everyday to test Geos files and run
- Geos applications and I do not encounter any problems or freeze ups
- using my C128/Ramlink/gateWay setup.
-
- re:1750 as a DACC and 1meg or more as accessable ram
- yes, it is true

- Mike Mc,
-
- That *IS* it!!!
-
- Since the program offers a dual disk drive option, select this one.
-
- The program seems to run fine from RL's native partitions, and I would
- continue to use them.
-
- You are already set up to enter the program thru gateWay, and I'd leave that
- alone. That partition, or sub-directory, or whatever is fine. The only
- change there, if you want, would be to get back some ram space, and keep in
- there only files needed by the program for the first drive. The others can
- be scratched.
-
- Now the second disk *MUST* be in RL's real partition 1. So you may have to
- reconfigure RL, if partition 1 is now used for something else. The present
- partition 1 should have another number, so 1 can be set up for the second
- disk. This too can be native (more on this in a moment).
-
- The new partition 1 can be anywhere. So, if for example partition 1 is now a
- REU, when reconfiguring make the REU, the first partition created, any other
- number. Whatever number you may want. Doesn't matter. Continue re-creating
- other partitions. Somewhere (after the buffer in RL gets created), create
- partition 1. That should do it. :)
-
- Now, as to partition 1... I'd try a native mode. If you think there may be
- other programs that may also require a partition 1 in order to run properly,
- you may want to create a partition larger than what the program itself needs.
- Otherwise, its size could be for that second disk, and some expansion of
- data, etc.
-
- If the program is by itself in partition 1, then there is no need for a
- directory entry. However if it is sharing it with other programs (that may
- also use file names that are the same) then a directory for it may be best.
- If this is done, then you would have to first open the directory on
- partition 1, before letting gateWay exit into the program in partition 0,
- which happens to be whatever partition is currently in use. If you do not use
- any directory entries in partition 1, then you can enter the program as you
- do it now, without the extra step. (BTW, either way you do it, you could
- have gateWay exit to a Basic program which sets everything up first, and
- calls the program, saving any need for things to get entered manually. Just
- a click on the icon does it ALL!)
-
- When the reconfigured program goes from one disk to another, it is then going
- from drive 0 to 1, on device 8. If the program in 1 happens to be inside a
- directory or not doesn't matter, so long as the directory got opened BEFORE
- the program accesses it (either manually or thru a Basic starter program).
-
- Once this is set up, and because it is all being done on RL, you probably
- won't notice any delay as the program switches from one drive to another.
-
- ----------------------------------------
-
- Maverick,
-
- You've probably noticed a few earlier messages that refer to the need for a
- "buffer" in RamLink when using gateWay.
-
- The "buffer" is a sort of junk area that is used for nothing. Its only
- function is to seperate REU ram from RL ram. Unless this junk area gets set
- up, gateWay will NOT run properly.
-
- So when CMD tells you the probs you see are because there is no ram in RL,
- they are referring to your not having this needed junk ram area, which would
- be in the first part of RL's ram.
-
- (BTW, *THIS* RL junk ram area, is not the REU ram area that gateWay uses for
- its swapping and other functions. That is something else.)
-
- I suspect that gateWay would run for you, so long as you configured it to run
- from the D's drive and the REU. Or, you could continue with GEOS' DeskTop,
- taking advantage of the a REU that never loses its power, RBOOTing back into
- GEOS, whenever you wanted.

- Murphy's law no X:
- You always find out about the problems after you buy it..
- No offense to CMD of course, but it does get annoying....
- SO, am I to understand that my 512k RAM expander gets only a portion used
- for task switching and other little tid bits !?!?
- Gateway should be re-christened as Windows 3.2 for the 64! ie RAM and
- resource hungry. You know what they say about Windows on the PC ... you need a
- 25mhz 386 and 4 megs RAM to run without serious probs... shades of this appear
- on gateway.... still, I have put in an order for a 1mb SIMM, and expect to
- get it on Friday at the latest. SO, when its installed and away, Ill let you
- know of my experiences...
- Thanks for replying guys... I never knew GEnie could be so enlightening!!
- tell you one thing... its worth the money! and being a poor student means that
- GEnis rates are affordable... unlike Compuserve! BTW I also communicate
- through local BBS's using Searchlight echoes to people in the states.... ever
- tried using them?

-
- Glad to hear you enjoy GEnie and that you are buying a SIMM! It is a
- worthwhile investment.
-
- Let us know how it goes with the 1meg SIMM installed.

- Howie & J.BEE-
-
- Thanks for your replies.
-
- Howie, are you saying that my program will be able to determine which partition
- is which device? That would be great as the data disc is formatted in a
- different way than the program.

- Doug, my gateWay crashes when I try to use a RAM-OLD 128 driver. I have a
- 1750, RAMLink with RL DOS V. 1.40, C-128D. During MakeBoot, I answer "no" to
- the GEOS patches dialog box. The other RAM Disk driver works fine with this
- set-up.
-
- Also, is there a more recent RL DOS chip than the 1.40 that I use? If so, can
- you describe the improvements in the current RL DOS?
-
- BTW, my hardware has had all the known bugs that appear when RAMLink and a
- 1750 are used together. :/
-
- Your loyal customer Michael
