- Guess what? So far, nobody has been able to copy it. It *requires* the
- special AUTObooting routine, and CBM seems to have protected it somehow,
- too...although its sure a stupid thing to protect.
-
- have you tried duplicating the Auto Boot sequencer info that resides on
- the demo disk before copying the shell????

- The problem with the auto boot sector can be cured by using a
- nibbler copy program, like Fast-Hack'em or something similar.
- One problem tho, if you have ANY autoboot on a disk and you
- COLLECT (validate) the disk you've lost your autoboot. I don't
- know why CBM did things this way. There was a program in Creative
- Computing a few months ago to create an autoboot sector to auto-
- matically boot any program on the disk you want, and at the same time
- change the text-screen colors, and redefine the function keys if
- you wanted. You could also change the message displayed when you
- press the HELP key (it still does the same thing, it just prints
- a different message). The program is very short. In the magazine
- it had some typos and was missing a close paren. Also the printing
- was taken directly from a dot matrix printer and some characters
- not legible. I have modified and corrected the program. I
- would be glad to upload my changes but I don't know if the
- original program in the magazine is considered public domain.
- I didn't write the program, I just corrected the mistakes and
- it to be easier to use. Then again, as of the December
- issue, Creative Computing is no more, so maybe it will become
- PD. DEB, maybe you could check on this. There is an autoboot
- creation program in the newest issue of RUN, but it is much,
- much longer than it needs to be and more complex than it needs
- to be.
- Oh yeah, back to the DOS Shell; I wouldn't worry about
- trying to copy it. It's not a very good utility. The copy
- program often doesn't copy accurately, only works with
- double-sided disks, only copies files, not a whole disk at once,
- it's much harder to use than it should be and they left out
- some simple functions that would make a lot of sense to include.
- In my humble opinion, to put it bluntly, although I love my 128
- system, the DOS Shell is a piece of crap.

- Is that the autoboot program in Cre. Comp by Sheldon Leemon? If so, I'll
- just call and get his permission.

- I am uploading a program called DOSBOOT into the 128 software library
- tonight for those of you who want to copy the DOS SHELL from the 128
- /1571 demo disk. Run the program on a blank disk, then use the demo disk
- DOS SHELL to copy file the DOS SHELL onto your new disk. It works great!
- I downloaded it off one of the other nets, Q-LINK I think. Also, I have
- not had any trouble copying files, programs, disks, using the utility.
- Enjoy;)

- Unfortunately, I wasn't paying
- REAL close attention when Jim
- Butterfield talked about this, at the
- meeting of our Michigan Users' Group
- last month, not having a 128!!
-
- But, I seem to remember that he was
- using some kind of NEW Dos Shell,
- which was Public Domain, and may even
- be available from the club's library
- now.... I'll see what I can find out!

- We've got a new upload in the database that is a program that is supposed
- to copy the SHELL from disk to disk. As soon as its tested, it will be
- public.
-
- If anyone is interested in the step by step manual directions to do this,
- I can upload a text here for that, too.

- I don't see what all the fuss is about the DOS Shell utilities. They're
- not very good at what they do, they leave out helpful (and I would have
- thought obvious) information, and they are not logically operated.
- The only things going for the DOS Shell are:
- 1) It's free with the drive.
- 2) Right now it's about the only C128 disk utility package available.
- In my humble opinion, after about 3 1/2 months of a C128-1571 setup,
- the DOS Shell ain't worth the disk it's saved on.

- Dean...hehehehe, my thoughts exactly!!!! I wonder what *might* be the
- BEST kind of a disk utility for the 128/1571 combo?
-
- Altho perhaps the SHELL does serve the function of allowing people to perform
- regular maintenance without having to learn DOS commands--but ANYONE with a
- C-128 right now probably did not buy it to "USE" it, since there really is no
- software to "USE"...!!!
-
- Anyone have any other thoughts about what might have been useful tools for
- inclusion on a SHELL? Maybe we can design a *ShellPlus* ?!

- Aw, come on... I kinda like the DOS Shell program... Well, it's been said
- I'm kinda strange, too... <haha>
- Seriously, since it's only been about 2 months since the last message
- was posted up here, does anyone have any info on some GOOD C-128/1571
- disk utilities? I KNOW, I don't have a 1571, but will get one down the
- road...
- Thanks for your help,

- I bought mach128 a couple of days ago and wasn't very impressed.
- The documentation is written for those already familar with the
- MACH5. I was lost until I played with every command to see what
- it would do. The company did not list any phone number for support
- or any exchange policy for the cart or enclosed utility disk.
- The switch on the cart to change between 128 and 64 mode is not
- marked so you have to play with it until one can remember which
- position is for what mode. I have two 128 terminal programs that
- bombed out with 'illegal quanity' errors while the cart was in
- the machine. The full review is in the 'product pursual' section
- of CToday.
- On the plus side...it does load files faster in the 64 mode, even
- if the drive is a 1571. It is supposed to run the 1571 in 'burst'
- mode for 128 use. The difference in speed doesn't really add up to
- mu ch that way.
- All-in-all...a fair product that seems to have been rushed onto
- the market. It works...but it could work much better.

- I suppose in this case, ignorance is bliss, but...
- somehow I've managed to copy my dos disk and it works fine!
- it might have something to do with the fact that
- my dos disk , if I'm not mistaken, has a program that will
- create a file on track one that will autoboot any file you wish.
- it asks you the name of the file, then it asks you if it's
- basic or binary, then it creates the autoboot
- program. Haven't had any problems on that yet!
- But I'm not sticking my neck out here... like I said,
- ignorance is bliss.....

- maybe I'm just another blissful
- ignorant sort, but I had
- no problem with the DOS
- shell either. The first thing
- I did was to format a new
- disk with it, then I copied
- the file with it, then I ran
- the autoboot maker and that was that!
- I agree it isn't the best, but
- so far the only utility I have
- seen that will copy a whole double
- disk is COPY II C64/128.
- Yes, it will copy a double sided disk, but it has no single-file copying,
- and the 128 formatting is not 10 seconds. It is
- about 45, just like from DOS.
- Sorry about this message, but this new terminal has
- an option called half-duplex, which allows
- you to get a great deal of exercise from
- pressing it, to no avail!!!
- How's my touch typing look?

- The DOS Shell is quite effective once a person gets the hang of it, BUT
- it does have the file copy bugs which some of us have documented - it
- tacks extraneous characters to the end of its copies which can play
- sheer he** with compiled and overlay'd program. If a program works on
- the source disk but doesn't on a copy, and you used the file copier to
- move it, then that is the problem...

- Yeah....well my Dos Shell will not reformat a previously 64 formatted disk
- It breaks into the ML Monitor after or freezes. But I was surprised at
- the speed of the HEADER command from basic! Nine seconds to reformat a
- double sided double density disk.
