-
- I haven't done an IDE, but have done several replacements in CMD
- units.. Upgrading to a larger SCSI drive is just a matter of mounting
- the new drive (usually the mounting screws are in the standard
- positions), and plugging the SCSI cable and the power connector into
- the new drive's connectors. Couldn't be easier.
-
- Two things to be aware of are: 1) That the replacement drive has the
- SCSI terminator resistors installed (those multi-pin things that are
- plugged into the drive's circuit board right near the SCSI connector) -
- generally there's three of them. 2) Jumpers on the drive should be
- set for SCSI device '0'. If it/they aren't, when you run the llformat
- prg, you will see that it won't detect device zero when it scans for
- it. You need it as device zero, as that's the device where the system
- will want to be created. Some drives have another jumper on-board
- which is used to set operating mode (or somesuch). If that isn't in
- the right position, then drive won't spin when powered-up. ..so those
- are pretty straightforward.
-
- One more point is that I understand that upgrading to some larger
- drives / or brands of drives (I'm thinking specifically of IBM brand
- here) may necessitate an upgrade to the latest DOS, plus an upgraded
- boot ROM. I recently upgraded my HD-40 (had Quantum drive) to a 240
- meg Quantum. No additionals needed. I am now upgrading a friend's
- HD-20.. It originally had a Seagate mech (yecchh), was upped to a 70
- Meg Rodime (yecchh), and now going to a 200 Meg IBM. Looks like the
- latest upgrade requires the latest HDOS (v1.92) and boot ROM (2.78)
- (just got them in, and I'll probably do it tomorrow)
-
- I'm partial (in my limited experience) to Quantum.. I didn't care for
- what I saw of the Seagate, or what I've read at other times. This
- isn't to say whether Maxtor or Conner are great (maybe?), good, ok,
- etc. I just don't have experience with them.

- While there are relatively few programmers still collecting royalties on a
- lot of the new packages stocked by the last remaining few distributors,
- they indeed were paid for it at some point (whenever the distributor sold
- it). So yes, in most cases you this no longer deprives the author... just

- buying up what was left and keeping it legally available. And because
- games in general are so easy to get for free now, those few new titles
- that have been released in the last couple of years don't sell enough to

- Hello,
- I have a very nice Commodore 64C I would like to sell.
- it has the following:
-
- - 1764 256K Ram expansion and Deluxe C=64 Powersupply with
- included software to patch GEOS as a RAM disk. (this is
- new and still in orginal box)
-
- - 1541 floppy drive
- - MPS 801 Printer
- - Joystick
- -(also small joystick that is on the side of the computer
- for GEOS)
-
- -All necessary cables included to hook up the system, and some
- extra cables too.
- -2 extra power supplys (1 C64 white, 1 regular black)
- -Fastload cartridge
- and at least 50 probably more like 70 titles with orginal
- documentation (I will list them if necessary)
-
- I have tested the computer recently (today) and it worked fine.
- it is in very good shape and has been well taken care of.
-
- I think about 60.00 for all plus shipping sounds good. If
- not, make an offer, I really don't know what it is worth

- Hello
-
- While attempting to figure out how the 1581 computes its CRC's, I bumped into
- the necessity to disassemble code to disk so that I could transfer it to
- my amiga. Here's how I did it, using Super Snapshot V5's ml monitor.
-
- First I loaded the code into the c64's memory
- then, from basic, I opened a file like this:
-
- open 1,8,2,"0:code.txt,s,w"
-
- after that, I hit F8 to start the monitor up, and then typed
-
- o8,1
-
- to redirect the output to the disk drive. Then
-
- d c000 c0f0
-
- to disassemble, then
-
- o
-
- to go back to screen output, then
-
- x
-
- to leave the monitor, and finally, from BASIC
-
- close 2
-
-
- The SS manual only gives an example for printer output, so I tought I'd post
- about this. Anyway, hope you find a use for it :-)

- The C-64 had for the longest time a huge chunk of the personal computer

-
- What does the C-64 need to revitalize its missing link in time? It needs

-
- (unfortunately) this is the truth! I truely enjoy everything available
- for the C64 now, but I do not plan on staying on it forever. If there was
- still a big market I would most certainly do so, but alas, as with most
- people, the demise of Run took some wind out of my sails - althought I am
- STILL very MUCH a commie....
-
- But the real reason I am writing is COMPATIBILITY. There has GOT to be a
- patch of some sort for Word or WP that will sucessfully import a C= word
- processing file - INCLUDING FORMATTING (e.g. bold, italics, etc.). Does
- anyone know where?
-
- What I want to do is to be able to convert a Word file into a C=
- compatible file, bring it home, edit it, save it, take it back to work,
- and open it back up in Word, and have all of the editing, formatting etc
- that I did on the C= be there.
-
- Please Please help! If something like this does NOT exist, why not? :-)
-
- I guess it could even go the other way - a patch for the C= to open and
- save in a Word file format (text grabber in GEOS?).
-
- I would be willing to PAY for this ability. :-)
-
- THanks for your input!

-
-
- You have said my comment about software being used is incorrect, but then
- you stated my point exactly. Whether or not it is unopened and unused, No
- programmer is waiting for it to sell in order to collect on it. It has all
- been sold long ago and they have collected anything that is going to be
- collected. If you are selling software that is no longer being produced
- then you need not worry about piracy because your supply is limited to a
- certain amount. You are no longer trying to sell as many copies as you can
- because you cannot make more than you have. You need only worry about
- marketing it in order to sell the copies you have available. Contrary to
- the beleif of a lot the programmers in this newsgroup someone who has
- copied a program probably would not have bought it if they could not have
- copied it.
-
- Anyway, sure piracy is illegal. Im not questioning that. However I dont
- think it is affecting anyone in the commodore world in the manner it is
- always stated. At any rate it makes little difference to me, as my
- commodores are usually boxed up and used rarely. I just follow the c= for
- nostalgias sake. Also I BOUGHT all this software for it when I used it a
- lot and I cant bare getting rid of it.

- This is a question that gets asked
- and answered a lot. There are mamy
- sequential reader programs out there
- including Big Red Reader, metabasic
- and others. Here is the simplest
- program I can think of to read a
- sequential file.
-
- 10 open8,8,8,"filename,s,r"
- 20 get#8,a$
- 30 print a$;
- 40 if st=0 then 20
- 50 close8
-
- There are several ways sequential files
- are used so reading them can be tricky.
- If the file was created by a word
- processing program, chances are it uses
- a variation of Commodore Screen Ascii.
- The characters are poked directly to the
- screen. Some of that data will include
- formatting symbols specific to that
- writer.
- The file might be in Commodore ASCII in
- which case it is pretty easy to read.
- The following program ought to read it
- although I just now threw this together
- in response to your question and didn't
- spend much time checking it for bugs.
- (I did test it)
- If the file was saved in true ASCII or
- other format, a converter program will
- have to be used to read it.
- I wrote a little program which reads
- the ascii screen file (the kind Word
- Writer-Timeworks uses) but I didn't
- include it here as I'm not sure what
- kind of stuff you're trying to read.
- This is for C=64. The spaces are
- just for readability and can be
- eliminated.

- I have one disc of files created on Timeworks Wordwriter128. If anyone
- who has a C128 and a printer would be so kind as to print these out
- for me I would be very grateful. I have the software (which you could

-
- Thanks.

- The spirit of copyright protection is that while the author of a (textual)
- work was still alive, that he/she would benefit from his/her work. But
- balancing that, right in the original laws, was that IDEAS could NOT be
- copyrighted, only the EXPRESSION of ideas.
-
- In other words, the laws originally intended to benefit both the author
- (while they were alive) and the PUBLIC too, by letting everyone else
- benefit from the IDEAS created.
-
- Just for what its worth, as I rarely see any posts about copyright law,
- where the writer has a clue what they are talking about. I won't even get
- started on Trademarks and Patents....
-
- There is a balance here, folks! You can argue forever about whether or not
- the LETTER of the law has been violated in some case. But the SPIRIT of
- the law is plain; once the original author of a work dies, its public
- domain for everybody else! This allows both groups to benefit, progress to
- be made, and so on.
-
- The difficulty arose when the lawmakers could not decide where software
- should fit in, legally, so they treated it like a text work. All sorts of
- screwy problems now result, and the laws have not been addressed yet, to
- fix them.
-
- Whatever. Enough of that...
-
- But, you need a grasp of Commodore's early history, to put this all into
- better perspective. Commodore themselves GOT POPULAR by stealing other
- people's copyrights!
-
- I'm talking about them doing unauthorized Vic20 ports of Space Invaders,
- Galaxian, Pac-Man, Lunar Lander, Night Driver, Rally-X, Avalanche /
- Kaboom!, and so on.
-
- In other words, the first dozen or so Vic20 carts are about half filled
- with "pirated" games! Guess what? Is it any mystery that the Commodore
- computers later had a piracy mindset heavily in place? The manufacturers
- did it. So did lots of users, later.
-
- I'm not arguing whether any of this is right, or is wrong. I'm just
- saying, it happens now, it has happened before, etc, etc...

-
- As a fellow geoJunky, and a sometimes GEOS programmer, I'd like to
- throw my own pennies into the mix.
-
- 1. Would GEOS be a better OS after a revision: YES!
-
- Lord knows there is so much held back potential in this little baby that
- most of us can hardly stand it. Better ram support would be an excellent
- start-- some virtual memory routines to allow bigger and more powerful
- software. This could include SuperCPU memory-- but need not.
-
- Having GEOS internally gateWayized, where drivers are files separate from
- the CONFIGURE program, would do wonders for hardware compatibility and
- eliminate the constant patching and repatching to make new drives work with
- GEOS. New hardware-- all you need is a new driver!
-
- Another great trick of gateWay's is the Swapper, which is a greatly improved
- geoWizard, where true task switching can take place. However, at present, if
- you want these features, you have to take the damn gateWay desktop along for the
- ride. Give me icons, or give me death!
-
-
- 2. Now, ought someone revise GEOS: Absolutely, positively NO!
-
- Although I'd give my left arm for all those nice features in the GEOS kernel,
- I know that it will come at a cost too dear-- compatibility. Already there
- are tons of great little GEOS programs I've come across which don't work
- or barely work with version 2.0, as they were written for 1.3. If these
- revisions were to be made to the GEOS kernel, a great many more programs
- would suddenly become rotting piles of bits. Already there is the
- compatibility gap between GEOS 64 and 128... and an even larger one between
- gateWay and the standard GEOSs. With a revised GEOS coming in to use, this
- gap would widen and people would go back to version 2.0 with tears in their
- eyes, just as I went back to GEOS 64 after ooohing and ahhhing at both GEOS 128
- and gateWay's kernel features. And why would they go back? For the sake of the
- software they were able to run (including the deskTop in gateWay's case).
-
- Now, you may be wondering: Sure, this may be indeed happen, but so what?
- Windows 3.1 replaced its predecessor without a glitch, and Windows 95 appears
- to be leaving 3.1 behind. Not only is software ported over... but even bigger
- and better things are filling the gaps... this could happen for GEOS too,
- right? NO! Unlike Windows, we Commie folk don't have thousands of software
- companies clawing at each other to upgrade their software, and make old
- software compatible again. If geoPublish doesn't work with a new version
- of GEOS... that means BYE BYE for desk-top publishing in GEOS.
-
- Now, is there a compromise? Probably. Surely some things can be done to
- the GEOS kernel that will maintain compatibility, while giving us at least
- some of the new changes we crave. However, whoever does so, and that would
- have to be GeoWorks, which still holds all the cards on GEOS 64/128, would
- have to tread very very lightly, lest they find themselves holding a
- briliantly written but useless GEOS upgrade.
-
- WHEW!

- Ward, I'm sorry to hear that your 'colleague' decided to stiff you. I can
- imagine the anger and frustration you must have felt. I'm sure I speak for the
- rest of the Vic fans present when I say that I accept your apology.
-
- As someone who is slowly but safely creating a web.presence for one of
- yesteryears legends I have had quite a few requests to "hurry up and get it
- online". I keep telling these people that the project will premiere when I feel
- it is ready. So far, people have been very understanding regarding this.
-
- I am sorry to hear that you did not have any response to your FAQ. I for one am
- very pleased with it. And I am sure a lot of other people are as well. It can
- be very ungratifying to put a lot of time into a project if noone seems to
- appreciate it. I speak from personal experience; during the late eighties/early
- nineties I didn't get any feedback on my numerous contributions to the "Scene".
- I'm happy to hear that despite this setback you have been able to collect all
- those cart-images.
-
- I recently made contact with a guy in the UK who is also collecting Vic20
- programs, on cart as well as on disk/tape. I'll talk to him and see if he has
- anything to offer, and whether or not he wants to share it with the public.
-
- I will gladly share whatever Vic-stuff I have with the public. Unfortunately I
- fear that I haven't got that much (if any) software that you don't already have
- in your possesion. However I do own a number of Danish/Norwegian magazines with
- Vic-related articles that I could dig up and digitize. I should also be able to
- get a european mirror up and running pretty fast - depending on how much space
- the project will require. If it doesn't take up to much space I can store it
- myself, otherwise I would recommend putting it in /pub/cbm/vic20 at ftp.funet.fi.
-
- I would also be more than willing to help you HTMLize documents, design &
- maintain a web.presence and publish a european mirror on the web.
-
- There are, however, a number of things I cannot do for this project: 1) I've
- got no room for my Vic in this tiny flat (which explains why it is in storage
- at my parents house) so I can't really test/review any software without having
- to make some prior arrangements. 2) I can't purchase any Vic-related products
- for the project - what little money I have is primarily spent to support my
- existance and my other hobby: comics.

- If I had some cash I'd love to buy up the rights to the C64.

- There are various ways to read a text file. One thing that has always
- been lacking for me is a good way to read a very large text file. You
- can read such a thing right off disk with various SEQ text file
- viewers. But say I am reading DisC=overy (around 200K), and I want to
- go to an article near the end. It will take forever to get to it.
- With Zed 128 you can load the whole thing up at once, IF you have an
- REU. I haven't seen any discussion of a good way to view massive text
- files without an REU, not sure why. I assume no one else has written
- any program to deal with this situation?
-
- For REUless Commodore users, this here is my stab at a solution.
-
- It is particularly relevant now that the latest issue of C=Hacking has
- come out (almost 400K of text). One tip here: Avoid using an "=" in
- the filename when downloading this or other file. The "=" is not a
- legal Commodore filename character.
-
- BTW, More is a text file viewer. For those not in the know, I'll
- repeat how it works in ACE. When viewing a file, press Space to
- advance to the next screen. Press Return to go forward one line.
- Press Q to quit More. Press N to view the next file, if any.
-
- Slightly revised MORE command for ACE
- -----------------------------------------------
-
- The file below is uuencoded. You can decode in ACE simply by typing:
-
- uudecode filename
-
- You can type "more manmore" to see some instructions.

- What steps would I need to take in order to convert a Word file to a file
- that could be read by a C= word processor?
-
- For example, If I send a formatted (e.g., Bold, italics, etc) word
- processing file to myself (uuencoded) via email, then download it (without
- translating it into PETSCII), and then uudecode it, I would have an
- untouched Word document sitting on my C=.
-
- What steps would I go through to convert the formatting codes to something
- a C= word processor would interpret correctly?
-
- I am assuming that I would be able to not translate the file into PETSCII.
-
- Is there a way I could modify a C= word processor to read "bold" using the
- same lingo that Word uses?
-
- On the other end, does anyone out there know of a patch that I could put
- into Word which would give me an option under "Save As..." to save as a C=
- file? (e.g., it would convert the formatting into lingo a C= word
- processor would understand - maybe it could even convert it to and from
- PETSCII).
-
- Please please help!
-
- I do not program, but I am getting to the point with this issue that I am
- thinking of tackling it on the C= side. Anyone willing to help me? :-)
-
- I am willing to pay for some sort of good conversion routine between the
- two!

- PS Right now I am using Pocket Writer and GeoWrite.

- The Zelch BBS, running on a trusty C128, is back up and running.
-
- No, there's no phone number you need to call.. no long distance
- charges to rack up..just TELNET to 147.26.162.107 and login as "bbs".
-
- My buddy in Arizona finally sent that drive over, so the system is
- even bigger and better than previous. I was able to get Murder Motel,
- Galactic Empire, and a couple other online games in there this time.
- However, there's still no Commodore graphics support, or file transfer

- I have just built the X1541 type cable. When I ran it using Star
- commander and again with Trans64, the drive would access but I got 3
- knocks and the error message 20. I am absolutely certain that the cable
- is correct! Also, the drive works fine plugged into a real C64. Any
- ideas or suggestions to what the problem might be?
-
- Thank you in advance,
