- I can't get auto dial to dial number. If I type"N" it asks for number and I
- type in and everything is ok If i try to do it with auto dial it does not
- work. I inadvertently turned modem off and then auto dial seemed to work??,
- but of course modem was off

- Mike,
-
- After calling up the Auto Dial Directory with a Comkey A, cursoring to any
- listed telephone number and pressing <CR>, carriage return, will make Dialogue
- dial that number.
-
- Or, have I missed your question?

- Mike.. have you written a script for the number you are trying to autodial?
- Autodialing only works when a script has been written for that number.
- To do that, when your dial screen is up, hit -W- when the number you want
- to write a script for is in reverse video.. then write your script. To
- exit hit the run/stop key, and Dialogue will ask if you want to save it.
- Hit the -Y- key and then you are set. Then when you hit C=A, your
- script will run and it will dial for you and log you on. Hugs

- One thing to be aware of: if you type any characters, or if any characters get
- sent to your modem, before activating the autio-dial window, it can mess up
- the auto dial command Dialogue128 sends. For instance, if Dialogue128 isn't
- sending a CR at the end of your init string, the "atdtxxxxxxx" command (the
- command that tells the modem to dial) will actually be tagged on the end of
- the init string, and likely be parsed as an error. Or, if a couple of junk
- characters get sent to the modem, they will be at the beginning ofthe atdt
- command, and thus the modem will probably not recognize the atdt command.
-
- If you try autodial once, and it fails, and then you immediately try it again
- without typing or doing anything else in between, what happens?

- Rose- I contest your statement that autodialing only works when you have
- written a script for the number in question. I use autodial all the time on a
- whole stack of numbers, but I have not written an auto-execute script for a
- single one.
-
- Autodialing should work regardless of whether you have written a script or
- defined function keys or anything. All you need is the number.

- Rob.. are you talking about using the -A- when in the dialing menu or the
- return key to dial? Also, there is the function of multi-dial. Multi-dial and
- CR dial always work for me, but A wont work unless I have a script setup.

- Well, that only makes sense Rose, since the 'A' function is for exiting to a
- script after dialing. Dialogue checks for the script's existance first, and
- errors out if it doesn't exist. Same goes for <SHIFT-A>, which is for repeat
- dialing with exit to script.

- Mike,
-
- Edit your phone book entry by pressing 'E' while that entry is selected in the
- phone directory. Make sure that ONLY the actual phone number is entered for
- the phone number... that atdt and the following '-' shouldn't be there. Then
- double-check the name of your script... it too should be named just as the
- phone number is entered ('XXX-XXXX' format). See if that helps.

- Well, try this Mike,
-
- ; Small AUTOEXEC for setting up Dialogue to AUTO-DIAL selected ; numbers in
- your phonebook. ; l C=a "\204filename\68" ; "C=" = the logokey e ; ;btw. you
- can just you the BUFFER to enter this
-
- the above will load up a list of numbers that you have to previously
- have saved. To create the list "filename.lst" YOU can see just how to do
- this on page 23 of your Dialogue Manual. It says that you'll use the ALT-S &
- ALT-L commands to save or load. However, from within a script you need to use
- the "\204" (shifted L) to load it. then after loading "filename.lst" (btw..
- you only need "filename" within the commandline as it already, because of the
- shifted L searches for the file extention ".LST"
-
- So to pre-set up this go to the phonebook and do a "M". Cursor to the
- numbers you wish to call and for each (after m) hit return till it shows EXEC.
- (if you've also created individual AUTO-LOGON scripts for each number listing)
- Otherwise, you need to just hit return till it says DIAL. Once all selections
- are made. ALT-S (or shifted S) to save the multi-dial list. You'll be
- prompted for a filename to enter. In the AUTOEXEC (above) I just entered
- "filename" you would have to enter te name that you are now saving it as in
- there.
-
- So lets see what should happen.. you LOAD/RUN DIALOGUE ..you're in TERM mode.
- Press ALT-A (to start your AUTOEXEC) BINGO! It loads up your (in the
- example's case) "filename.lst" those HIGHLIGHTED numbers appear and the
- "\68" in/on the commandline presses D for you and it begins dialing those
- selected numbers. If you've chosen to have saved the filename.lst with each
- number as EXEC it will then try to connect with the BBS and once it does get a
- connect it will then start using the AUTO-LOGON that you've also previously
- created. Of course if you've decided to just save the numbers as DIAL then
- once the CONNECT has been made.. you (MANUALLY) must take over.
-
- (autoexec) So make and save the above example Use the C=e (edit buffer)
-
- (auto-logon) enter phonebook (C=a) cursor to BBS for which you want an AUTO-
- LOGON by pressing "w". Enter all the commands you need to navigate around on
- the board.
-
- (multi-dial list) since you're still in the phonebook after saving thos AUTO-
- LOGONS, press "m" and HIGHLIGHT (selecting EXEC for method of multi-dial).
- save the selected number in a list (ALT-S or shifted-S)
-
- QUIT Dialogue... load/run Dialogue do a C=a ..and you'll see that the
- HIGHLIGHTED numbers aren't there. (RUN/STOP outta there) ALT-A enter filename
- that you saved the (above "autoexec") ..you'll see that it'll load and and
- dial the MULTI-DIAL LIST. IF a connect is made then the AUTO-LOGON will then
- take over.

- Howie, is the buffer being displayed while you are saving it? If so, that
- will REALLY slow down the save.
- Go into the CONFIGURE screen C= C, and set the Screen Output to NONE. This
- stops the displaying of the buffer save, so all you will see is the status
- line info. Now I have played with the BUFFER and PROTOCOL settings, but have
- not seen any difference of them from the BOTH setting.
-
-
- On a different note; I slapped my swiftlink and REU into an Aprospand
- cartridge expander and plugged it into my pass-thru port of the RamLink, and
- once again have a 512k buffer AND using a 9600bps modem.
- A GLITCH appears though. About every 64k (while buffering text from a bbs),
- the data stops and my keyboard locks up: except for my RUN/STOP key Hit it one
- or twice, and viola' everything frees up and the bbs start transmitting again.
- FUNKY STUFF!

- Alan,
-
- You did it!! Again!!
-
- The buffer displaying was indeed what made the saves slow. While I did not
- time it, saves to RAMLink appeared to be a lot slower than when the buffer was
- filling with streaming text at 9600.
-
- Now, with the screen display permanently set to NONE, saves to RAMLink are a
- lot faster, and I am certain a LOT faster than the 9600 that comes in from
- outside.
-
- You hit the proverbial nail on the head for my problem!
-
- Thanks!!!! :)
-
- And.....
-
- I like what you did with the Aprospand. Having a big buffer again would be
- nice. Altho I'd lose the REU'S battery backing it is a good trade off.
- Thinking about it, I will give this a try once I get a few spare moments. I
- wish it didn't require nuking the RL, since it does take a while to again set
- up a 12 meg box.
-
- The 64k quirk you mention reminds me of an observation that Rob had made, and
- that he noticed some garbled text in the big buffers at each of its 64k
- boundaries. It is curious tho that Dialogue knows enough to pause incoming
- text at these boundaries, presumably to keep any garbling to a minimum.
-
- I cannot begin to tell you how GREAT it is to see these buffer saves now
- streaming!!!! :)

- on thing that will make your script writing easier and GEnie run faster,
- is to set GEnie to COMMAND MODE. To do this, simply type a C at the menu
- prompt, and you will get a response from GEnie saying you are now in
- Command Mode, or something like that. Now, you wont have to write a script

- The IF conditionals can be a bit tricky.
-
- Before getting to that, however, I see an error in the script as posted:
-
- w"Enter #, <Command> or <HEL>p": w"Have a nice day!":e
-
- After the "...<HEL>p" GENie would require a reply else you will sit at that
- prompt.
-
- And of IF's they differ from Basic's IF's in that in Dialogue they *are* in
- fact loops that unless you are careful, a script will get locked into.
-
- One example of a Dialogue IF:
-
- if "you post": t "I'll try to reply":g (to another line number)
- if "Howie posts"
- ei
-
- The last IF is the one that exits you from the IF loop, if a prior IF
- did not exit you already.
-
- I am not all that sure about what you might be trying to accomplish.
- However, if responses for all RoundTables are the same you could set up a
- subroutine that the script jumps to.
-
- I am certain that the following will not work, but it might look something
- like:
-
- 10 if "Enter #, <H>elp, or <CR> to continue":t"":g 10
- if "Enter #, <H>elp":t"m1320":g 10
- if "Enter #, <P>revious, or <H>elp":t"1":g 10
- if "Enter #, <Command> or <HEL>p":t"set 38":g 10
- if "38 ?":t"rea":g 10
- if "Which topics (#,#-# or 'ALL') ?":t"all":g 10
- if "Which msgs (#,#-#,ALL,NEW or LAST) ?":t"new":g 10
- if "Have a nice day!"
- ei
- t "BYE"
- w "NO CARRIER"
- e
-
- The above would work only if each IF is unique, and "Have a nice..." is
- certain to appear.
-
- Finally, my apologies for those runnning scripts, and if the scripts burped
- because of any of the above....

- When leaving formatted text in the BB editor, use the *sn command to send
- it and you won't need all those blank lines to keep the formatting correct.
-
- One suggestion about that script. I always like to keep a script a short
- as possible by sending as much as possible in one command. Take the reading
- of that category #38. In the span of several lines you are setting to cat
- 38,
- giving the REAd command, answering which topic, aswering which messages,
- and telling the BB to keep scrolling the messages. The way I'ld do it
- would be to trap for the '1?' prompt in the BB and first give the "scr 0"
- c0mmand for continous scrolling, then use the command of "rea all cat=38
- nor".
- A command like that can be sent from and category to read another category
- without having to set to the category you want to read. That making sense?
- ;)
-
- About that BB scroll prompt, unless you prefer the text to stop after so
- many lines are displayed, the 'scr 0' command is will cause the text to
- continously scroll and is permanant until you give another command like
- 'scr 16' which will cause the text to stop after 16 lines are displayed.
-
- Anyway what all this rambling is getting at is by using the 'scr 0' command
- and then the 'rea all cat=38 nor' command will convert 6 lines of that
- script into just 2 lines.

- What I posted would get you EVERY message in CATegory #38! Let's see if I

- This is really for EVERYONE HERE ON GENIE who uses scripts:
-
- I saw a post in the CP/M RoundTable informing users that beginning July 1st,

- through scripts and macros (don't forget those macro keys) and change all the

- m8004;9. This will need to be changed back to: m200;9.

- Alex: I am fully aware of how to enter the default filenames for the
- phonebook, etc. What I was complaining about was the fact that Dialogue stores
- the multi-dial status of each number (None, Dial, Exec; for when you hit D in
- autodial) in a separate file, which you *cannot* tell it to load by default
- when you boot up. I was able to script out this procedure for when the term
- boots, but that's not the point.
-
- While I'm complaining, I might as well point out that the Upload/Download
- window settings are not saved with the rest of the configuration; I'm
- referring specifically to the Y-modem name option and the default file-type
- option. My start-up script changes these to my preferences, but I'd rather
- these settings be stored with the rest of the configuration. And since there
- are no plans for a future upgraded version.... we're stuck, and it sucks!
-
- One last pet peeve: no 9600 direct support through the user port, only up to

- In defense of Gary, Matt is *not* the one who made DesTerm work at 9600.
- It was Geoff Welsh who wrote the routines. And as I have pointed out

- In the 4th line of each script please insert your ID# and

- Check with your local phone company. Example: the first script,

- the buffers, (and it works great) but now I need a way to put the date
- in the filenames. Such as: 1012cbm.msg or 1012cbm.lib. As far as I
- can tell D-128 doesn't support variables. Any suggestions?

- Beats me, I just want to mention if you use the date like GEnie does
- Ex:931012 to save text or email (Ex:931012.duncan or email.931012)
- you can store megabytes of it and simply sort it or find it two years
- from now that way.

- But, JBEE....
-
- Why would you want to keep 2 year-old mail hanging around....
-
- Alas, old mail, like fish and news, tends to get gamey with age..
-
- Mike, Dialogue allows variables. However it differs from Basic. Take a look
- at the $ string.
-
- Having the date appear as a part of a filename can be accomplished quite
- easilly. Hint: As a part of the Dialogue boot (I do this for another
- program, but all programs could share the file) have Basic write a "today.dat"
- SEQ file. Then append this to (the beginning or ending of) whatever name you
- want to assign to a filename.

- I actually have all my electronic mail and letters (personal and company)
- since 1985 :) I have had more than one occassion when I needed them to
- refresh either my memory or someone else's memory.
- Though I now archive them all with .arc and back up old ones onto
- FD-4000 disks :)
-
- C00L tip by the way :)

- JBEE, Howie -- Thanks for the input. I forgot all about the $ temp
- string. At first it didn't seem all that useful, (maybe that's why I
- forgot about it) but it's useful in this instance.
-
- Thanks again.

- Mike,
-
- While I don't have a routine to do exactly what you want to do with
- Dialogue, I do use something similiar when booting up Digital's
- Pocket Writer 3.
-
- The following writes a file to disk with the date in a format something
- like: October 18, 1993. (You would probably want your program to do
- something like: 931018, instead.) Among other custom things, it also
- loads and auto starts a Pocket Writer 3 macro (a feature omitted from
- the program), and the running macro then does some further set ups,
- and date formatting. The end result is that all letters, memos and
- other forms automatically get the current date inserted into them.
-
- Anyway, maybe you can get some ideas from what I have been using:
-
- 10 en=0:em$="":et=0:es=0
- 20 u=peek(186)
- 30 f$="today.dat"
- 40 open15,16,15
- 50 print#15,"t-rd"
- 60 fori=0to7:get#15,z$:y(i)=asc(z$):next:close15
- 70 ify(1)=93theny1$="1993"
- 80 ify(1)=94theny1$="1994"

-
- I know the Basic can be improved a lot. However, it does do the job, and
- seems to take maybe one, or one and one-half secs to run.
