- Not only has Adam Fanello released NetWork v1.26, but he released V128
- for Color 64 over a year ago. At this point there are close to 100 boards
- using the great V128 software conversion.
-
- Adam is as good, perhaps even better, than Greg was with his support and
- updates. Sometimes it's hard to keep up with all the new goodies coming out,
- latest of which is Xmodem-1K and Ymodem-batch protocols for V128. They are
- in use on Adam's BBS, Nature Reserve, and should be released to all V128
- SysOps very shortly. Adam has done mods to make the new protocols useable
- with PlusTerm which will be a big help to all of us!

- +e began beta-test of Color 64 v8.0 last night on my BBS (Sonic Temple -
- Home of Color 64)...
-
- We will be ironing out the bugs in the next week or three, as well as
- writing / editing the documentation. This is generally the most time-
- consuming part. :::shudder:::
-
- The latest version of Color 64 BBS will be compatible (as it should well
- be) with; CMD's entire line of storage devices, Xetec's Lt. Kernal series HDs,
- InConTrol's (ICT) Mini/Data Cheif HD series, IEEE devices, 17XX REU series (up
- to 2 megabytes, Super Snapshot, Action Replay, Warpspeed, and just about any
- darned device that we've had the chance to make it compatible with (if ther
- was a compatibility problem, that is!).
-
- I do NOT believe it will be BUSCARD-II compatible - I'd opt for the
- "Quicksilver anyway...
-
- The new system will sport tons of new features as well - And immediately
- after the release of v8.0, we will begin on the SWIFTLINK-232 compatibility
- (we have made the ML code much more conducive to using this UART device.
-
- The entire setup program will be MENU-DRIVEN so you won't have to scroll
- through pages and pages of setup to change an item or two.
-
- Network v1.26 will not only be included, but with the modifications we have
- made to it, files in excess of 1,000 Commodore (256 byte) blocks can be
- networked between Sysops, as well as public messages and E-mail, as in
- previous versions. For those who don't wish to use this program,we will offer
- a "net-less" version as well ...
-
- If you are a Color 64 SysOp, and haven't been apprised of the changes that
- are happening, you can reach the home BBS (STBBS) by dialing 410-285-0428.
- This will afford you the chance to see FIRSTHAND the changes that have come
- about in the Color 64 world.
-
- I would like to add also that there is currently an upgrade module being
- sold for an additional $25 by Adam Fanello, called "Version 128", which will
- enable you to convert your standard v7.3 overlays to run in full, 80-column
- mode, at 2mhz, or 1.2 Mhz at 40 columns (using raster interrupts).
-
- I simply am pointing this out as an option to those who wish to utilize
- their 128's in their "Color 64 adventures"!.
-
- The Color 64 v8.0 upgrade, in the spirit of good fellowship, will cost ONLY
- the price of the disks+mailing costs ($5.00), or$10.00 if you want the manual
- to be a hard-copy, as opposed to a sequential file.
-
- I will post another update as things develop further.
-
- I must apologize for the general sloppiness of this text - I'm stuck in
- FULL DUPLEX! help!

- My solution to the problem was to buy a good 2400 modem. I do not

- I don't use that interface or an aprotek, but I can suggest 2 things... First,
- in your BBS, check out the setting for DCD. It should be only 1 of 2
- possibilities for standard user-port (as opposed to SwiftLink) connections.
- It will either be 16 or 0. If one does not work, try the other. This sounds
- like a very likely cause of your problem. As in many other things, Commodore
- does things just a bit different than the rest of the telecommunicating world,
- and the state of bit 4 at address 56577 when testing for carrier is one of
- them. Another would be to contact Aprotek. The Aprotek C24 was notorious for
- having that problem (picking up the phone) when it first came out. There was
- an upgrade or fix from the company. Who knows... maybe the same thing is
- happening with their interface? I would like to get one of those modems for
- just a little while.... long enough to write a dialer and auto-answer routine
- that others could use... and before anyone volunteers one, I have a full dance
- card already.

- Well, here's the latest "scoop" on Color 64 & Swiftlink...
-
- Effective today, the support bb (Sonic Temple) is online, running
- Swiftlink at 9600 bps! we are ironing out a bug or two, but all is going well
- - in a few days, we'll add the Ramlink back online, and test with it online as
- well. If you have a PC, or use a SL cart from CMD, call us at 4800 or 9600
- and check it out!
-
- I would like to say that I am pleased with the quickness that the vast
- changes are taking place in, as well as the fine programming that Anthony
- Tolle has done with Color 64 BBS v8.0... Aalso, a big thanks to the gang at
- CMD, Skyles, and the Supra Corporation - All very helpful...
-
- Adding the 9600-14400 bps modem won't be as big of a setback (financially)
- as one would think, either - Supra offers 9600 modems for registered Color 64
- SysOps for a scant $199.95, $249.95 for 14,400 bps. And $30 extra, you can
- get the "Caller ID Module" - What is it..???
-
- Well...
-
- Ma Bell (Not Ed's Mom, either) has a specific format in which they send
- caller id data - with this chipset added to the modem, an extended at command
- will trigger this info to be sent in the desired format - from there, we can
- just store the caller's caller id info in the SysOp's caller log. This is a
- nice feature!
-
- Off of my soapbox for now...

- Thanks, Howie - Hehe, we're re-writing some of the carrier routines (Color
- 64 won't support 300bps modems anymore, the ml space is too precious) since
- the 9600's^ are a little more fickle. Hopefully, as soon as this version is
- releasesd, we'll get Xmodem1k & Ymodem batch, so the data compression used in

-
- Doug,
-
- Due to the sensitive timing of Xmodem 1K and Ymodem, the compression screws up
- the wait loops, and causes the protocol to often get stuck in infinite loops.
- To effictively make use of a high speed modem with data compression, one
- really should use a streaming protocol like Zmodem.
-
- And yes, Punter C1 acts even worse that Xmodem 1K or Ymodem. Steve Punter
- admits this, but notes (and rightly so) that in the C64's heyday when he wrote
- the protocol, no one thought about data compression or using high speed modems
- on the C64.
-
- Incidentaly, he has written a new "C2" protocol as a replacement for "C1" for
- use on his commercial IBM BBS system - so far, it is proprietary and the only
- machines that use it are the Punter systems calling each other. However, one
- day I expect to see him release it. Why one would need to when Zmodem exists,
- I'm not sure. But Steve has never done what people would expect, so... :)

- Oh, And check those prices on the SUPRA 14.4k. Saw a company advertising
- some for $198. Bet it is an internal, though.

- Correct - Support will be eliminated for 300bps, strictly on the bbs's end,
- 300bps callers will have no probs whatsoever :)
-
- I'd like to know who is selling Supra 14.4's for $198...

- Well, today we tested Color 64 v8.0, using the Swiftlink UART cartridge.
- We called using the Color 64 term, and read messages, uploaded, and downloaded
- files with no problem. The next step will be to get a 14,400 or 9600, and
- test transfers...
-
- I'll be happy to field any questions on this subject...

- Fred, as you do the tests, let us know if there are any problems that point us
- away from a particular modem.
- On FIDO, I have seen messages suggesting that a person stay way from a
- particlur model from a company. And since most of us are CHEAP and will be
- buying used modems, we would like to know the 9600 bps equivlents of the 6480!
- <grin>
-
- Another money question, how FAST of a modem can be used?
- 2400bps with compression to 9600?
- 9600bps with compression to 14.4k?
- 14.4k with compression to ??? or the new 16.6k modems?

- that only would talk to the same brand and sometimes only the same model.
- If the modem is bigger than the 1541 box, don't buy it.

- Fred, Has anyone else calling Sonic Temple given similar results to mine?
- Running C128 with Dialogue and a Supra 2400plus modem. Straight 2400 and the
- RS232 buffer would overflow (About 30 lines and then text would start
- disappearing and garbaging. Text file 1 is a good quick check.) 2400 with
- v.42bis turned on and no flow problems, nice clear text.

- Since I have never used Dialogue 128, I can't vouch for it's effectiveness.
- I do know, however, that many terms with poorly written 2400 routines (many
- versions of CCGMS) just can't cope :)

- I would like to make an announcement regarding Color 64, Swiftlink, etc:
-
- We now have Color 64 running at 4.09 mhz (our bbs is running at 4.09 mhz now)
- with the TURBOMASTER, the MASTER ADAPTOR, a Swiftlink cartridge (yes Doug, it
- *WORKS*), and a 14,400 bps modem. Talk about lightning quick!

- Time to start looking for a used TM & Master Adaptor! :D

- Actually Doctor, we simply plugged it in, and gave it a shot -- The BBS
- performed perfectly with the TM. The only changes we had to make were to
- software switch down to 1mhz mode during file xfers, as to avoid any timing
- problems.
-
- BTW the Master Adaptor that they designed to allow you to use Georam or an REU
- under geos (this was the only real use covered for it by the manual) works
- FLAWLESSLY with the Swiftlink.
-
- I too was shocked, but sice this was so easy, why not utilize the
- compatibility? It's just time to start looking for a used TM ...

- We drop for the whole xfer, and up back to 4mhz when the xfer is complete.
- Tony will be writing a modified version of the current protocols that will not
- require the drop. I suppose this may help slightly in the cps rates.

- So, back when I used to call a couple of Color 64 boards locally (before time
- and other pressures made it such that intervals between logging on were so
- great that the message backlog I achieved was insurmountable) I downloaded
- this terminal program "SupeResTerm." At least one of the color 64 boards had
- support for this term- you could view SupeRes files online if you had logged
- on with SRT.
-
- Is SRT an outgrowth of Color 64? Or an independent thing? Or what? Also, who
- is JMH (or is it JHM, or am I confused?) who did some of the SRT pictures I've
- seen. There is this particularly nice one of M51 as viewed from a planet just
- outside the galaxy, which came with the terminal.
-
- Just curious.

- SuperResTerm was authored by Brian Bell, author of OMNI 128 BBS. Brian also
- wrote his BBS to be somewhat compatible with Color 64 boards (the boards are
- capable of networking together). I believe that Brian decided to make his term
- and BBS follow the Color 64 tradition because of the overall popularity and
- support that Color 64 has enjoyed over the years.

- Doug is correct. Brian also told me that there will soon be an update to
- this software (the current release is V8.3) that will support Swiftlink at
- speeds in excess of 2400 baud (9600?)... The speed at which the pics could be

- I netw ork with a fellow in Seattle who runs a BBS (100 Meg CMD I believe),

- COMMODORE. He doesn't allow any others <<grin>>...
