- My understanding is that you can set up the 1541/1571/1581 partitions to
- exactly emulate the T/S format of the corresponding CBM drive. I would
- imagine the major snag would lie in heavily copy-protected programs that
- would be hard to copy over (and I doubt we could do a half-track write on

- I have NEVER gotten a Heavly protected game to work on my FD2000! Setting up

- The only program that I would like to run off my FD and can't, is Knights of

- Did you know that you can "add" rotational matricies together?
- Lets say we want to translate our object to the orign, rotate the object
- around the X axis, the Y axis, and the Z axis. You Want to scale the
- object, translate it back to the original starting position, and
- rotate it again? We can multiply all these matricies together. Then
- take the final matrix, and multiply it with each of the points in the
- object. If you have a small object then you'll probably loose by doing
- this. But if you have a larger object, you'll save alot by creating
- this single matrix.
-
- It is possible to do better than nsquared for a general matrix, and
- you can do MUCH better for a specific matrix.
- These methods are used in almost every major graphics program...

-
- Well, again, I invite the interested reader to do it by hand both ways:
- multiply everything out, one at a time, and write down what you get. Now
- multiply all the matrices together, multiply by the vector, and see what
- you get.
-

- That's right. In fact, in an earlier posting, I showed how you could
- take a 4x4 matrix and reduce it to the same number of calculations for
- a 3x3 matrix, plus 3 additions...
-
- >These methods are used in almost every major graphics program...

- Nevertheless, I am of an open mind. Since these methods are commonplace

- Willy, you've been a real inspiration to me. I have thought long

- Back in '87 I had the same problem and it turned out that the
- power supply was for all practical purposes "dead." If you have
- a spare power supply or can borrow one from a friend, try that
- and if it fixes it you've found the culprit.

- If I had a problem like that, I would invest in a can of freeze spray.
- Wait until the problem occurs, spray a chip, and reset the machine.
- If the machine comes back up, then you found the problem. Freeze
- spray should work great in this case since you evidently have a
- thermal problem. It could very well be one of your RAMs. I would
- try spraying each of them first. Let me know how it goes.

- But the problem is not in my software. The problem is in your
- hardware. There is no BBS author who will support faulty hardware.
-
- It should be relatively inexpensive for you to get the latest CMD
- HD-DOS from a distributer of CMD stuff in Australia -- It is also

-
- GeoRam is a kind of RAM banked into 8Kb banks. They can be switched in at $
- 8000 - $a000 as a normal cart, and you can then swap pages using $de00. (
- Action Replay and SmartCart are basically also built this way!). Copies to and
- from this type of memory takes as much time as copying from normal memory!
-
- The 17XX memories on the other hand uses some registers located at $df00 to
- communicate with a DMA chip that swiftly transfers everything back and forth
- from the conventional memory and the X-mem. (One moved byte per cycle)
-
- If you are looking for tools like assemblers, crunchers, paintprograms and so
- on (i.e. most programs, but for the GEOS range) then the 17XX is the supported
- one!
-
- Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think Geos can work with a 17XX as well.
-
- In theory you can have both types active at the same time! they use different
- I/O page ($DE00 and $DF00)

- OK, I have a different twist on the REU thing. Does anyone out there
- have a schematic and parts list for a "roll-your-own" (or is that
- "kluge-your-own" ??) REU? OR, someone that makes a PC board for such
- and is just waiting for some chips?
- The reason I asked - I just came into a fairly sizeable quantity
- of:
-
- Hitachi HM50256P-15
- OKI M41256-15
- OKI M3764-20RS
-
- That are in sockets, and you could say "well cared for" used.....
-
- If these chips are applicable to the task along with some support
- and/or memory controller IC's, I'd love to kluge up a decent REU. I
- run GEOS plus other stuff, and even if that meant I had to crock up
- two *different* ones, that would be OK with me.....
-
- I do some computer support for a living here at Purdue, so I have access
- to some useful items, but just need to see what is available in the
- way of boards, documentation, etc.......
-
- email is good - although a post back here as well might be of benefit to
- other users.....

- To my knowledge, the Berkeley Softworks geoRAM (originally sold in 512K,
- expandable to 2 meg) by itself will only work with GEOS. However, my
- RAMLink manual clearly states that if a geoRAM is plugged into the RAM
- port of the RAMLink, it can be used as RAM-based disk space - that is, it
- will respond to practically any transparent DOS operation.
