- Jason: How about re-uploading the text, but this time, when you are
- finished, type '*sn' instead of '*s' to send it. This will
- preserve your original format. GEnie formats messages so that they
- will appear properly for either 40 or 80 column users unless you specify
- to *'S'end but do 'N'ot format. From what I've read, it looks like
- an interesting product. Be a shame if people skipped reading your

-
- My Supra has Caller ID. Thing is tho, as far as I know, no one has yet
- written software to put it to use.
-
- A first step on my part would be to activate caller ID with NY Bell. I was
- told it became active a few weeks ago.
-
- Might be interesting to have it access a data base, so when a call comes in,
- from a *known* number it can flash all the personal info on screen before the
- call even gets answered.
-
- Just a thought...

- Ed,
-
- Actually, wasn't the idea of a talking term something that JBEE suggested at
- one time?
-
- Presently, I can buffer an on-line session to disk, and then once off-line
- have SAM talk the file. Quite understandable, if slower than reading. Having
- real-time talk would be something!!
-
- A talking ID would be nice! No need to go over to the screen to see what is
- what. However, I don't know that I would want it to talk at 14.4k bps....
-
- And, let me clarify, before anyone asks.... Altho the Supra can (and now
- does) connect to places at 14.4k bps, the Supra and my 128 are running at 38.4
- bps, and not full throttle which would be 57.6 bps.
-
- Even so, I cannot imagine having understandable text at 38.4k.....
-
- Finally, as for your suggestion for the Spence XP BBS having a talking "chat"
- mode, and unless I am missing something here, I believe that this idea has
- already been implemented. Sometime around the late 1800's, if I remember
- right.... by Alex Bell... :)

- The NISSA (New Image SysOp's Support Association) is a group of IMAGE BBS
- Owners who support the IMAGE BBS, when I ran the Network it had approximately
- 50 boards, I'm not sure how many they have now, the group is split up into
- two subgroups, SSB (SysOp support Boards) and ASSC (Associate boards) The SSB
- boards are very knowledgeable on the software and provide support almost as
- well as the main support voice and BBS does. The ASSC boards provide support
- as best they can. In order to become a NISSA Member you must first be running
- a LEGAL registered IMAGE BBS, you start out as a ASSC member and after 6
- months of membership you can then apply for SSB membership. It's not a bad
- group, I headed it up from 1989 till June of this past year, now it's headed
- up by two very competent sysOp's/programmers. NISSA is also the ONLY
- recognized Support group for New Image Software Inc. If you would like more

-
- This topic is for messages pertaining to the DTJ-BBS.
-
- The DTJ-BBS is a shareware program for the C64. (It's available on GEnie and
- Qlink.) It runs similar to the Citadel group of discussion-oriented programs
- that run on other computers.
-
- The DTJ-BBS is somewhat unique for a Commodore program in that it does not
- support Commodore color graphics. It was written for sysops who don't want
- color graphics, but want something a little more serious looking. This
- software is primarily a discussion system; it encourages message posting more
- than other things like file transfers (although file libraries are supported).
-
- DTJ-BBS features up to 50 user-creatable message bases, 15 SIGs, 3500
- messages, 4000+ character free-form message editor, 999 users, email (normal,
- urgent, & certified), external modules, Xmodem/Punter/ASCII(xon/xoff)
- protocols (with more planned), "twit" handler, optional profanity checker,
- word-wrapping to the READER's video width, sysop and SIGop commands, and more.
- Sysop/SIGop commands include enable/disable system, edit accounts, create &
- edit files, DOS mode, create/rename/delete message bases & sigs, read any
- email, kill or edit messages, and much more.
-
- This software supports all serial-port drives (1541/71/81, ICT & CMD HD, etc),
- 1650/60/70 or Hayes compatable modems (2400bps or 38400bps with a Swiftlink-
- 232 cartridge), optional CBM or ASCII printer (for audit trails), and optional
- battery-backed clock/calendar hardware. JiffyDOS compatable, but other ROM-
- based cartridges or modifications may not work.
-
- This software is unique but easy to learn and very easy to use. It's almost
- completely self-maintaining... all you have to do is validate new users and
- new upload files. It's also very fast. Many users think the DTJ-BBS runs on
- a PC!
-
- If you have questions or need help, leave a reply here or call the support
- board at 702-553-2869.

- The latest version of the BBS is now available for downloading. This is
- revision 911128 (November 28, 1991). The primary changes since 910501 are
- improved Swiftlink-232 support in both the BBS and terminal mode. Also, there
- is an undocumented feature that allows calling the BBS via a null-modem:
- pressing SHIFT-1 through SHIFT-6 will simulate a ring at any of 6 baudrates.
- This will be documented in the next version (already in work).
-
- The new version also includes two new protocols, XmodemCRC and 1KXmodem. Each
- of these comes in a stripper and non-stripper version.
-
- Also available for downloading is an ARC file containing all the source code
- for all currently available modules. This includes the new protocols that
- come with the 911128 revision. Feel free to use the source code as examples
- for your own programming or modify them if you want.
-
- The BBS file is #9362 and the source code file is #9349. The documentation
- has not been updated; download the 910412 or later documentation if you
- haven't done so already.
-
- The next version of the BBS will include the editable menus, better ANSI
- support, and other changes.

- The next revision of the BBS will require changes to the configuration files
- (s.1, s.3, and bases). Since the changes are being made, I'm changing the
- format of these files, reorganizing them.
-
- One of the changes is that the disk drive and modem specifications will be
- stored in new "definition" files, and when the BBS is initially configured,
- the disk drive and modem information can be taken from the definition files
- instead of being "hardwired" into the support program. This will allow for
- more specific drive and modem configurations.
-
- If you are running a DTJ-BBS with a modem type other than 1650 or 1660, I
- would like to know the modem setup you are using that works for you.
- Specifically, I would like to know the brand and model number of the modem,
- initialization strings used (including non-volatile RAM settings if
- applicable), and if you don't use a Swiftlink-232 cartridge, the baudrate fine-
- tuning values. This information will be used to build the modem definition
- file.
-
- While many DTJ sysops have no problem with the default setup, others have to
- modify the modem configuration. This seems especially to be a problem with
- the Aprotek modem(s), and somewhat with the new 1670.
-
- Please leave me email here or on SHEC. Your cooperation is appreciated!

- I for one have been running DTJ-BBS software for years. Since 1988 actually,
- and it IS one of the best BBS programs I or my users have come across for the
- C64. I've tried some others, ones that support C/G, and multi-transfers, but
- if you are interested in message bases, and ease of use, this program has it.
- The message editor can handle up to 4K of text (changeable by setup options to
- smaller), whichs provides LOTS of room for someone to leave text. The sysop or
- subops can easily move messages around to rooms they should be in if you like
- to keep your topics in the right areas. Users can have the ability to create a
- new message base "room" of their own, the list goes on. File transfer
- protocols now supported are: ASCII, PUNTER, XMODEM(chksum or CRC), and
- XMODEM/1K. I have been able to change the XMODEM/1K module to allow Ymodem-
- Batch uploads(but it is customized for my disk setup), and Xmodem-1K/G
- downloads(streaming protocol). It fully supports Swiftlink 232, RAMlink, 1581
- with parititions accessible, and the CMD-HD can be fully utilized as well. For
- those of you interested in trying out this ssoftware, you MUST read the manual
- to get the full jist of the BBS.
- In the Email area, you can save it as Certified, which will send you
- notification of when a user has read the email you sent. Sysops can send
- Urgent Email to a user, so the first thing they see when they logon will be
- the email. I could go one for awhile longer, but time is money here.

- DTJ-BBS does indeed sound fascinating. And, very versatile.
-
- As regards time being money, yes it is. And that is where GEnie excels.
- Reading postings from the Flagship Bulletin Board can be done liesurely
- while off-line, and at no cost. [When on-line open your buffer, and enter
- a BRO NOR.]
-
- Then to reply to Topics in the most cost effective way, do not do this
- while on line in real time. Instead write the replies off-line, and send
- them to GEnie as one very fast upload dump. Take a look into Category 1
- where I described a procedure for doing this very effectively, with the
- help and nudging of/from Rob and Mark.
-
- The few times I have checked to see how well this actually works,
- I seem to come up with getting six (6) messages posted at the same
- GEnie time, which means within one minute.
-
- Maybe if I made my replies shorter I could be more efficient. But
- six average message replies per minute into different Categories
- of the Flagship is still a pretty cost effective way to do a lot of
- posting here.

- software after running DTJ, and my users scream at me to go back to DTJ! It
- does run more smoothly than any other BBS I've run with little or no maint.
- Every month I print out the user list and work out the top ten posters for the
- month. When a user logs on they are shown how many new messages there are on
- the system, and when they enter one command, they can see how many messages
- there are in each rroom. It would take a truly superior BBS program for me to

- I have tried DMBBS and ST/R, but neither supported Swiftlink 232, and

- to be set up with the modem at max sped, and none of the xmodem based

- Yes, I backup to a 1581 (with JiffyDOS!) I got a program that I think was made
- by the sysop of TARDIS, that will archive all the messages into one file.
- Makes for a faster backup, since I have 1136 active messages on the BBS, each
- one being a seperate file. I think I will upload it here, for other DTJ sysops
- to use. I'm curious to know just how many DTJ-BBS sysops there are out there.
- I know that most people who try it out don't want to go through the extensive
- documentation. (There are about 140 pages of docs, that cover EVERYTHING!)
- Even though setup is very easy, customizing it may take a little time. Another
- of the nice features available online, is the ability for a user to create
- their own message base. I've not seen any other C64 BBS program that does
- this. With 15 SIGS and up to 50 message bases, it can get a bit hairy at times
- going through all the messages. Of course, you can select NOT to read messages
- in a room, or set the number of new messages to read to any value you want
- just by using a couple of keystrokes.
- For those who like to dabble in ML, Andy has provided the memory map for the
- program, so you can write short (4K) modules, like file transfers. I changed
- his Xmodem-1K module to a Ymodem-Batch for uploads, but I need more expertise
- in ML to make it work for downloads. Through the use of Novaterm, or any term
- program that uses script files, a user can do multi-download transfers using
- any of the protocols that are supported. I also modded the Xmodem-1K module
- for Xmodem-1K/G, which provides a download streaming protocol for those users
- that can support it(Qmodem has it). I have yet to sit down long enough to try
- to write a short game program for it.

- My BBS is Esoterica Terrain in Seattle. This is probably the oldest mystical
- oriented system in existence. Been online for 8 years.
-
- The system I run is called CHATeau. This is a deluxe message base system
- similar to a Citadel. Though it is MORE userfriendly. For example, your can
- do a (R)everse WHILE reading messages so you can wig wag back and forth within
- a room. And there are other special features as well which make it probably
- the easiest to operate BBS program in existence, for any computer.
-
- The main reason I think CHATeau is so great is because....I wrote it! Ha ha!
-
- I also wrote a little BBS program called microRAM, which is all over the
- country. I wrote that when my drives went bad all at once a few years ago.
-
- CHATeau looks a lot like microRAM, but is big, and fast...and disk based.
-
- There are two versions of CHATeau. One for the 1541 type drive, and another
- for the 1581. The latter supports up to 1050 messages....in up to 75
- rooms...on five floors. (The 5th is password accessed.)
-
- The 1541 version supports up to 4 drives. For four halls.
-
- Neither system supports downloads. Neither has color graphics.
-
- CHATeau is a deluxe message base and textfile supporting system. It is for
- private E-mail (which is encrypted on disk, and not visible to the sysop).
-
- Most of the users of a CHATeau system will be IBM PC type people. Yes, this is
- a C-64 BBS system which all the other computer types WILL call. This is the
- way it has been for all the Beta test systems....which are in Seattle,
- California, and Florida, and Michigan.
-
- Want to see a CHATeau in operation running on a 1581? Call Esoterica Terrain
- in Seattle at (206) 523-2530.
-
- Or! You can download the CHATeau DEMO program that is now available right here
- on GEnie.
-
- You need to get all five files to set it up.
-
- Suggest downloading the DOX file which will tell you what to do with the rest.
- It is called:
-
- CHATDEMO.DOX
-
- Just get that. Load it up, and let it run. It will tell you what you need to
- know to setup the full CHATeau program.
-
- It is big and uses two disks. One for the SYSTEM DISK and another as the DADA
- DISK.
-
- Keep your downloads on a disk of their own, and use it as a trader disk.
-
- CHATeau is the easiest to setup system there is. And easiest to maintain. I
- kid you not!
-
- Have you wanted to have a BBS but couldn't get any to work? Your troubles are
- over if check out the CHATeau! It's a fact.
-
- If you want an adult level BBS and not a twit board, then CHATeau is what you
- want.
-
- Download the DEMO, see what it tells.

- Any questions? Leave me mail.

- The Main Line Commodore Users Group runs a modified version 4.5 of Ed
- Parry's EBBS from King of Prussia, PA (just outside Philadelphia). It operates
- from a C128, SupraModem 2400, and CMD HD-40 on 215-354-9750. This version of
- EBBS has been modified to:
- 1) Utilize the HD partitions.
- 2) Utilize the HD clock.
- 3) The 15 libraries have been expanded to 100 files each.
- 4) The email user search routines have been enhanced.
- 5) Provide a sysop file description & file move routine between libraries.
- 6) Correct bugs in time routines associated with sysop feedback & file xfers.

- Listen up!!
-
- GM-BBS version 4.0 is arriving very soon! This system is a far cry from the
- previous version. Have you seen version 3.0?
-
- Anyway, it's in the beta testing state. Headquarters is located in Saginaw,
- MI. The # is (517)754-1276. 300/1200/2400??? supported.
-
- Registered sysops are given special access to d/l updates and other GM-BBS
- stuff when made available.
-
- Call the headquarters. There's a donation request for this software, but the
- first 10 callers will get a REGISTERED copy Free! That's right, free! I'll
- send your copy out along with other copies once the BBS has been released.
-
- The board is up 7 days a week, 9pm-7am EST. Just leave E-mail stating that you
- seen this ad on GENIE. I will give you a copy if you are on the top 10 list.
- Have a good one.

- Well, you should be able to go into the Program File area and Add the p-
- file to the list. It will prompt you for names and which drive.
-
- I would suggest that you upgrade to IMAGE V1.2 (I think that is the newest)
- or to CNET VERSION 2. These are siamese twins that have been seperated.

- Actually if you run IMAGE on a HD it's not a "slow" system, On a CMD with ram-
- link as in the CMD Headquarters BBS it's a mighty quick system. I run it on a
- Lt Kernal and it's extremely fast also..

- I've seen the copy of Image running for CMD, and it's still slower than. C-
- Net. But then again, my local C-Net is ran on a 128 in 128 mode. I think
- it's probably useless to compare totally different BBS programs in that case.

- If you are a CNET SysOp, then there is hope still! I was contacted by
- Rosemary Fox, the new owner of the CNET software company. Perspective
- Software is now known as RM Software. See wishes for ALL registered
- Cnet 64-DS-II and Cnet 128 users and owners to call her BBS at
- (201) 845-8250 or the voice number at (201) 843-3116.
- Version 7 is due out in about 9 months and she needs to update the shoddy
- records that she inherited from Perspective. (I posted this message at
- the request of RM Software in Mayfield, NJ.

- I'm an old C-Net operator myself. I run TARDIS BBS in Ventura County. These
- days I'm in the process of switching over to OMNI BBS. I can tell you however
- that C-Net 128 is a very good piece of software, I've ran it for many years.
- And that to be patient with RM Software during this changeover period. I was
- somewhat involved with C-Net programming on the Multi-Net Network project for
- that system, and I can tell you that Perspecitve Software left things in
- really a HUGE mess. But, I've talked with RM on the phone and they seem like
- really good people who are trying to put things back together with C-Net, so
- all you C-Net sysops out there I wish you the best of luck.

- #5) call the
- Library of Congress
- Washington, DC
- copyright section and ask for their forms "TX" and the other one needed for
- computer programs.
- Cost $20
-
- #3
- Depends if you have the line installed as a home line or business line.
- A home "barebones" phoneline will run about $15 a month
- a business line is usually charged by the minute or a flat fee of around $45
- a month.
-
- Your biggest costs will be equipment and time.
-
- #2 There are excellent shareware and PD software online for BBSs.
- As far as I know the best in BBS software are the shareware programs.
-
- Note that some local telephone companies consider a BBS a "business" and if
- you have a lot of activity it is within their right to require that you have
- a business line installed (or charged the business rate).
