- I bought one of these C24 modems after reading the mostly favorable review in
- Twin Cities 128. After one day of use it seems to work fine. The negatives
- mentioned in the review have proved to be minimal. There was a patch on the
- disk included with the modem that fixed the problem of working with the
- software for Q-Link. And the defaults all work fine for here on GEnie, so that
- fact that there is no non-volitile memory is not an inconvenience for me. The
- most annoying thing for me about the modem is that the speaker really stinks.
- If you buy this modem and are a BobsTerm 128 user try setting the lo-byte
- adjustment to 120. At the default setting of 113 the screen didn't have any
- garbage, but when I captured a bunch of text in the buffer there was a lot of
- strange looking stuff in there. I will enter any other discoveries I make
- here.

- I have been using the Aprotek Minimodem-C24 very successfully on my C-128 with
- BobsTerm 128. As D.Ray suggests, I've found it best to tweak the RS232 Lo
- Byte Baud Adjust rate upward from the default value of 113 to 115. Most of
- the advice I've seen suggests tweaking it in the opposite direction. It also
- seems to be advisable to toggle the transfer display off with C=/D. With
- these settings, I've had no difficulty with standard Xmodem file transfers.
-
- One thing I have noticed is that although I do see about a 100% improvement in
- download speed at 2400 baud when logged on to a local BBS, I'm only obtaining
- about a 50% improvement when logged onto GEnie. I presume this is due to the
- time-sharing nature of GEnie's more heavily used system. Of course, this
- leads one to the wry conclusion that my $80 expenditure has reduced my costs
- for downloading from GEnie by about 30%, while reducing GEnie's cost of
- serving me by about 50%. Sure was nice of me. J.Karn

- I have just switched to this modem too, and I like it a lot. Except when using
- Common Sense ( I have others, including Wizard, but I still like this better

- be removed. The 1670 modem I have didn't do this.

- About two weeks age my C24 died. I called the Aprotek people for a return
- authorization and after explaining in detail the symptoms/problems got one.
- Sent the modem to them via UPS ground on 2/20/91. Received it back in working
- order on 3/7/91 and they sent me an updated version of the manual. All in all,
- pretty good service.
-
- Just thought others who have this modem might want to know of this experience.
- BTW, a quick look at the new manual shows no significant changes from the old
- one. If you look at the back cover the manual version is in the lower left
- hand corner. I had version C, they sent me version E. I will check further to
- see if any info was updated and report here.

- On the subject of "vital" computer equipment dying, if you make a major
- purchase of computer hardware that you absolutely cannot do without for
- more than a day then it is always best to have a UPS call tag sent with
- your order for quicker turnaround on replacement. Usually the deal goes
- they ship you a new whatever and when you recieve it you ship back the

- I have had my Minimodem-2400 for about a month now. I have noticed with mine
- that the speakerr volume is very low . And the modem never recognizes when
- there is a busy signal. Other than that, Ihaven't had much trouble with it.
- I wonder though if any of you use your minimodem with Novaterm? If so, maybe

- deal of noise at 2400. 1200 baud works fine.

- If you enter the atl3 command in terminal mode you will get a louder speaker
- volume. I recently called Aprotek's support BBS and in the message thread read
- where they were working with their chip vendor to develop a chip with better
- busy signal recognition. You might call them if you want more info. Fine

- To Fix the Busy Detect BUG: Follow these Intrsuctions.
-
- You Normally dial out like so: ATDT2585039 <RETURN>
-
- Do this instead: ATDT2585039@ <RETURN>
- Notice I put an at @ , at then end of the number. It is Neccesary. to
- detect the BUSY Signal. Without it, you have a 5% chance of the Modem
- Recognizing the Busy.
- By the way, they now have the New Chip set Available. It Fixes the Busy
- Problem. But if the @ trick fixes the problem, don't send it in for repair.

- It never occurred to me that it could be a tinned piece of wire so I checked

-
- Someone on another network said that at one time there was a slight problem

- On the soldered parts of the board look for round or square pads and try to
- see which ones look bright and which ones look dull. If you see two areas
- much duller than the others than that is probably where it fell off.

- Karnak,
-
- It might be an incompatibility between the modem's DTR setting and what the
- BBS expects.
-
- You might try changing the modem's settings, to see how the BBS responds.
-
- If it is now &D0, try running with it at: &D3, &D2, or &D1.
-
- Or, the reverse. If it is at 1 thru 3, then try a 0 setting.

- John,
-
- Isn't the MiniModem Commodore compatable? If it is, then it would plug in
- direct to the User port, without the need for any interface.
-
- An interface for the User port would be required for any of the "standard"
- Hayes type modems, for running Terms that talk with that port.
-
- The SwiftLink uses the Expansion port, and requires a Term specifically
- written for it. There are now many, like Dialogue128, Kermit, etc.
-
- Using the User Port speeds up to 9600 baud are possible. However, with a
- SwiftLink, speeds up to 38,400 baud are the limit.

- First, they have requested that *new* software be written which comes with the
- modem, and this new upgraded software _should_ have both XMODEM and
- Punter in it from what I understand.
-
- The bad news is that they don't expect to have it for another 4 weeks at
- least!
-
- As soon as its available and tested, I'll post a note here, ANCHOR will be
- keeping us informed on this new software.
-
- The good news is that they are making the specs available to ALL term program
- authors both commercial and PD for modifying the programs to work with the
- 6470 Modem. All authors who want this information, please contact me in MAIL,
- and I will forward the details to you.
-
- From what he just told me, the following firms are already working on making
- modifications to their commercial software:
- *> MicroTechnics Solutions
- (Sixth Sense, Smart64Term)
- *> VIP (Softlaw)
- *> VIDTEX
-
- It almost looks like the PD authors can get a good jump on the commercial ones
- at this point!!!
-
- The 6470 _is_ a VERY nice modem, supporting tone and pulse dialing, and priced
- even less than the favorite VolksModem 1200 (Hayes compatible). The 6470
- doesn't have some of the built-in flaws of the 1670, and as soon as the
- software trouble is fixed, it will HAVE to be one of the best buys on the
- market!!!
-
- I'll keep you posted as Anchor lets us know.

- The new Punter program, Versa Term 5.6 is now in library form in the
- Telecommunications Software library. This program has been supplied by Anchor
- Automation, and is the first one to support downloading for the 6470 modem.
- Still no XMO for it, tho.
-
- It arrived in the mail yesterday, a little late, buyt at least Anchor got

- Anchor sure did a largeboo boo on this one. I think it is going to hurt
- the future of that modem very much.
-
- I was playing with the new terminal program they supplied to me, the one I
- posted in the library, and guess what? I sure enough dials, but I can ONLY
- get the thing to work at 300 baud!!! (grumble, grumble, mumble, mumble)

- Hehehehehehe. Glad to see other people have no hair left from the 6470
- dilemma!
-
- I have been in contact with Anchor some ten times in two months regarding
- programming info. Today I talked with a Jerry who was no-nonsense and helpful
- in regard to getting information...
-
- I will be launching a letter out to them to receive their programming packet,
- and any information which is not specifically asked to be held in confidence I
- will most happily post on this thing.
-
- I, so far, have found it very disappointing to say the least, since it
- requires some crazy pokes to normal RS232 CIA registers AND to a serial port
- register in the other CIA chip to perform its magic, while the 1670 accepts
- simple ascii commands and does all the thinking for the user.
-
- By the way, did (does) anyone else have trouble using the software that came
- with the 6470 at 300 baud? I get a great deal of garbage instead of
- intelligent data at 300, while 1200 works fine.

- I never tried it at 300 baud...will fire it up later and see!
-
- On top of all the rest of these fiascos, Steve, are you aware that there
- are/will be TWO versions of the 6470 modem, each one using a different CIA
- chip ??? The first one is incompatible with the 128/1571, so they had to re-
- do it, but did not re-call it.
-
- At this point, even a public domain software author is probably nuts to try to
- work this into his program...!! ((Personal opinion))

- Yes, aware of the CIA problem... reason is the FAST routines in the 128 use a
- couple of lines in the serial bus that Anchor didn't plan on... Anchor blames
- Commodore for not telling them. HA!
-
- Tis funny to plug it into a 128 and listen to it chirp whenever accessing the
- serial bus!
-
- Would like to get my hands on a full-blown Hayes just to play with and
- experience ALL the joys of SMARTmodeming, though.

- Unaware of the foregoing messages on the 6470, I bought one and tried it on
- my 128. After about a week of intense frustration, I took it back to the
- store and made them eat it. I'm now running the VT100 emulator on my new
- Commodore 1670 and am extremely happy with it. As far as I could tell, the
- 6470 worked like it was supposed to. I just couldn't do much with it. Their
- tiny manual had about one page of info on the 6470 and the rest was about
- their silly Autocom V program, which I never wanted in the first place. No
- info at all about how to program for it or how to use it with any other
- terminal program. Higgyterm wouldn't work with it. Vidtex wouldn't work
- with it. Argh!!! I was afraid I had acquired an expensive paper weight and I

- For those of you who have experienced difficulties getting your 6470/6480 to
- work with other terminals... I have this little routine that will help in
- most cases. For most PD Terms it should work fine; for some commercial
- terminals it does not help any.
-
- 10 POKE 56590, 65 20 POKE 56581, 0 30 POKE 56580, 0 40 POKE 56588, 63 : REM
- FOR 1200 BAUD USAGE 50 REM CHANGE TO POKE 56588, 47 FOR 300 BAUD 60 FOR X = 1
- TO 100 : NEXT 70 POKE 56590, 8 80 POKE 56580, 255 90 POKE 56581, 255 99 END
-
- Run this little program BEFORE booting your terminal. What it does is send
- the command to the modem (over the serial bus, which connects to the user
- port) to tell it to turn on the carrier. Then use your terminal normally.
- When it picks the phone up, the carrier will be turned on; so you will have to
- manually dial the number and have the term pick up and take over when the
- carrier is heard.
-
- If your term is BASIC, you may be able to add this routine into the proper
- place of the program.
-
- If you have any other questions (or hopefully answers) to the 6470/6480
- dilemma then post them up, and I (we) will see what can be done to help.
