- This topic contains information about SID music files, the most common music
- files for the 64 and 128, how to order the program to make them, and how to
- order the SID Symphony cartridge allowing 6 voice stereo.

- Some of the finest music files made for the 64 have been created with the
- SIDplayer program developed by Craig Chamberlain. These files are often
- called "SIDs" for short. Many of these files are here in the Flagship
- library. You can download them and play them using a suitable player program
- such as STEREOPLAYER V10.3 also available here (STEREOSID103.SDA - file
- #7987). As the program' name suggests, there are also stereo files available
- but these require the addition of a hardware cartridge to add a second SID
- (Sound Interface Device) chip. (See message 3 in this topic for ordering
- information). The STEREOPLAYER is designed to support the second chip if
- present, but it is probably ALSO the best player program for conventional
- SIDs.
-
- SID music files can be easily recognized by the extensions after the
- filename. Basicly there are two types of files:
-
- .mus - Music file
- .wds - Words file
-
- In the case of stereo SIDs a second music file is added:
-
- .str - Stereo music file
-
-
-
- The program will also display full screen graphics files as the music plays
- such as Koala or Doodle graphics:
-
- .pic - Picture file
- .pgg - Compressed picture file
-
- These files are typically archived in self-dissolving files with some other
- special extensions:
-
- .sal - .mus + .wds
- .wpl - .mus + .wds + .pic
- .slr - .mus + .str
- .msw - .mus + .str + .wds
-
- Therefore, if you download a file that ends with ".mus" it is ready to be
- played on the STEREOPLAYER. If you download a file that ends with ".sal",
- ".slr", ".msw", or ".sda" simply LOAD and RUN them like any BASIC program to
- dissolve them into their component files.

- Probably the most powerful music software developed for the 64 and 128 is the
- SIDplayer program developed by Craig Chamberlain. The latest and most popular
- version is found in Craig's book, "Compute!'s Music System for the Commodore
- 64 & 128", published by Compute! Books. This very informative book and
- magnificent program is available as a book/disk combination from Creative
- Micro Designs (CMD). Their current price (as of this date) is $22.95 for the
- book/disk combination. You can call them toll free at 1 (800) 638-3263.

- The SID Symphony cartridge allows you to hear SIDs in true stereo with 6
- notes, or voices, playing at once! The SID chip can produce 3 voices at a
- time. The SID Symphony cartridge adds a second SID chip and, consequently, 3
- more voices.
-
- You simply insert the cartridge and connect the cart and the computer audio
- output to a stereo amplifier system. Then boot up STEREOPLAYER and play back
- stereo SIDs in true stereo, and even 3 voice SIDs in "simulated" stereo!
- Credit goes to Mark Dickenson for originating this concept. You can order a
- SID Symphony cartridge from Creative Micro Designs (CMD) for (currently)
- $39.95 plus shipping. You can call them toll free at: 1 (800) 638-3263.

- When you dont have the second sid you really dont know what you are
- missing. I was floored when I played most of my new sids and discovered
- how awesome they sounded in stereo.
- The classic music stuff seems to be especially good and a tad above the
- rest (as a group).
- I think youare really missing more than 1/2 by not having it. My favorite
- thingis to load up a 1581 and play it while falling asleep.

- I don't know about SID files, but I think there is a Music Shop program that
- does output in music notation, tho you may have to use an editor to build the
- piece. This prog may also be a GEOS utility. Not too sure.

- I recently uploaded some MIDI extensions to Sidplayer to the Dr. Evil library.
- These extensions are in the form of documentation on how to use the Sidplayer
- editor (or Stereo Editor) to create tunes for playback on a MIDI synthesizer,
- plus some player programs. There are four players in all to meet a variety of
- needs.
-
- Enjoy!

- I have written a program that generates background rhythms from inputted
- chords. After the song is entered, it may be played back in an infinite number
- of musical styles and variations (Rock, Blues, Reggae, swing, etc). The
- program contains many playback features, such as style and/or tempo changes at
- any measure, style editing, midi setup, etc. The program is designed around
- an easy to use point and click interface. You should have a general
- understanding of music, scales and rhythms. your hardware should include at
- least the following: c-64, disk drive 1351 or compatible mouse sonus or
- passport interface (midi) drum machine or synthesizer with drum sounds multi-
- timbral synthesizer with at least 8-note polyphony. anyone interested, please
- contact me via EMAIL.

- No, there is a utility on the Amiga utility disk that will convert
- IFF files to uncompressed bitmaps. Knowing that, it is better if you
- grayscale color pictures to a single B&W bitmap with dithering before
- converting them. I think the Amiga program saves the final files as
- "filename.info".

- If an Amiga file ends with ".info", that means that is the icon for that file.
- For example, if there is a file called "foobar.iff", and another file called
- "foobar.iff.info", the second file is the icon for the first.
-
- Amiga .iff files ALWAYS end with ".iff".
-
- BTW, I wrote a program for the Amiga which converts C64 Doodle files to .iff,
