- download sounds like typical outrageous stuff that only lawyers would come up
- with. If Compuserve settles out of court for 2 cents per download and an
- agreement to list and pay for future downloads, both sides may be happy.
-
- I think that in the early days of radio there were some skirmishes between
- music companies and radio stations, but the result was not that radio
- stations quit playing copyrighted music. The music industry did not want
- that anyway. Instead they developed a system to collect royalties.
-
- The system is a pain because once a year or so each radio station has to
- submit a complete playlist that includes each song played including title,
- performer, and author. I think the cost is based mainly on market size and
- ratings.
-
- In my younger days when I worked as a DJ at several radio stations, I got to
- fill out several BMI or ASCAP lists.
-
- I don't think the purpose of the copyright law is to shut down all
- entertainment. It is just to provide some financial gain to the creators.
- If this suit really results in a permanent ban on BBS computer music
- exchanges, it will be real sad for all but one group of people.
-
- (: Budding song writers would love such a ban because then their works would
- be the only songs available (excepting songs in the public domain).
-
- For every commercially successful song there are probably hundreds of songs
- that don't make it. Until they hit the big time, song writers would be able
- to distribute their works via BBS without the competition of the latest
- commercial hits. Of course that is assuming that people would want to listen
- to a song they had never heard before. It might set a trend. Instead of
- being exposed to new music via radio or movies, hear it first from the BBS :)
-
- Maybe I'm dreaming :)

- Who is the artist suing CServe and their record company? I want to be sure
- that I never buy their products, & I'd like to spread the word.
-
- Did these goofballs ever think of it as free advertising? If someone REALLY
- LIKES a SID tune, they would probably buy the tape or CD, not just listen to a
- SID.
-
- Ooops! I'm using common sense, many lawyers don't understand that.

- Rats! This was an item on my 'someday to get' list. Guess I'll
- have to look for a used SID stereo cart when that 'someday'
- gets here ;>
