- I need help with finding, if there are any, programs to convert B8 and DD
- graphics to geoPaint. I have found several graphic pictures which are in DD
- and B8 format, and I can not find a program to convert them.
-
- I also need to know if there are any program which will convert PrintShop
- graphics to geoPaint. And what is the difference between side A and B in
- Print Shop format?
-
- Thanks for any help.

- I can answer part of your question, that wrt the side a/b print shop graphics.
- The easiest way to say it is that size is the difference. The 2 block
- graphics are like 6 wide bye 7 high (chars) and the 3 block ones are 13 wide
- by 8 high. That is an approximation because they are actually in bits, and do
- not work out exactly to even 8 bit increments. As for why, it may have
- something to do with the fact that CBM printers in graphic mode use only 7
- bits of a byte flagging graphic mode by setting bit 7 always on, and IBM /
- EPSON printers use escape codes that tell the printer graphics code is
- coming and how many bytes to expect, and then use all 8 bits for the actual
- graphic data. When you can, you get a graphic with greater detail with the 3
- block graphics. The graphics on the demo card that comes with Print Shop are
- all the 3 block graphics. When I say 2 and 3 block, btw, I am referring the
- size on the disk in blocks. I just don't recall right now which side of the
- disk they are on.

- Hi :)
- I do have a Basic 8 to Geos converter (only does B&W 640x400 - how I did
- Masterpiece Designs). Once I have a color version done I will be releasing
- both on a TC-128/64 disk.
-
- re:Doodle Converter
- Use Graphic Storm by Joe Buckley. I just uploaded it, file #11127.
- It should be live by Tuesday night.
-
- re:PSA vs PSB
- PSA graphics are for non-Commodore printers like Epson printers and
- PSB graphics are for Commodore printers. Since PSB graphics are meant for
- a printer with lower resolution they are also lower resolution and graphics
- converted to side B tend to be distorted.
-
- PrintShop graphics of choice are side A (PSA) since they are the higher
- resolution and most people who design PrintShop graphics use this format
- first.
-
- The Geos utility to use for this is "Get Graphic" which allows converting
- and stuffing PSA into Photo Albums 127 at a time! File #11126 and it
- should be live by Tuesday night.
-
- I uploaded 21 disks of PSA a while ago into Lib #24 if you are interested
- in clipart ( I LOVE clipart :)

- I love glipart to. I just can not seem to find any that are really good. I am
- also looking for borders, or frames, which I can use around the clip art. I
- D/L a border from another network, where the person who made it used
- Masterpiece Designs, and if all of the designes are as good as this one, I
- would love to get this disk from you, JBEE. How much are they? Do you have a
- file, which I can D/L with some "samples" on it?
-
- I also have a disk full of graphics which I copied from a friend of mine in
- Sweeden, but for some reason I forgot to get the main program, so I can not
- view or print these. I have no idea what format they are, nor what the name
- of the program was. The program was capable of using a scanner/camer to make
- graphics, that is all I remember of the program. Does this program sound
- familiar? If not which program would be the best to use to try to convert
- these to GEOS? I have tried the program that converts Handyscanner files to
- GEOS, but it does not work.
-

-
- P.S. Thanks for U/L those programs, and explaning PSA and PSB.

- re:Masterpiece Designs
- I discontinued selling it a while ago once I determined RUN was never
- even going to look at the package, never mind review it. The licensing
- costs were just too high to continue advertising and selling it without
- a review.
- The small Basic 8 demos I have uploaded were actually designed with the
- art from the package :)
-
- re:stuff from Sweden
- Ahh.... I believe those are actually from a *commercial* software package
- meant to be used with Pagefox as RIO use to offer them for sale. You
- "should" be able to convert them with Handy Import. If you are really
- interested in them I can contact RIO & see if he still sells them.
- I have never seen them except maybe one or two sample sheets.
-
- You could always try the Handyscanner paint program I uploaded to
- GEnie (lib #22 with RIO's permission) to load the graphics and then
- save them out to disk and try Handy Import on them then. File #s
- 8847 & 8846.

- I D/L the two conversion programs, and they both work fine, except the
- program which put PSA into Photo Albums. After a lot of trial and error I
- found out that you can not create a photo album within the photo manager. If
- you do, the system crashes. (System error near $241F)
-
- I also D/L the PSA01.SFX file, and the graphics are great. This is the kind
- of clip art I have been looking for, and I wish everbody would make a file
- which shows what graphics are in the graphic files they U/L, That way you
- don't have to spend a long time online and not use the graphics once you have
- them.
-
- I will try the Handyscanner paint program. I hope it works.
-
- Now a question which has nothing to do with conversion programs. I have a 128D
- with two 1571s and an 80col monitor. How do I make a BASIC program work
- "with" GEOS? When I say work, I mean it will exit GEOS, run, then when I quit
- the program, it will return to GEOS? I would like a program which could
- convert the BASIC program to GEOS, but I don't think there is one that will do
- that. [B
-
- Thanks for all the help, and thanks for VERY good clip art.

-

- If you could U/L the PSA's in Photo Albums that would be a whole lot easier
- for me, that is if you don't mind. But if they are not in v2.1 and have more
- than 60 graphics in them, they can not be converted.
-
- As for my previous question about geoBasic. I allready have geoBasic. What
- I need is to know how to do the following:
-
- I have a program in BASIC 7.0 which I made and use a lot, but
- I also use GEOS a lot. After I exit GEOS and use my program,
- is there a way to return to GEOS, WITHOUT rebooting the whole
- system?
- My usermanual says to push the RESTORE key, but nothing happens.
-
- I hope that is more understandable.
-
- I was also wondering if it would be hard to make a program which reads two
- geoPaint files at once, printing them side by side? I have a Printer Driver
- which prints at 180x180, and I would like to put two of them next to
- eachother. For example, I draw half of a house on one page, and the other half
- on another page, then when they are printed out, it prints them together.

- Hmm, in principle it should not be too hard to do that from GEOS128. The
- BASIC program would just have to make sure to the variable (Bank 1) RAM
- pointers so as not to disturb GEOS. This will limit the variable space the
- BASIC program has to something like 23K, but that shouldn't be a problem since
- a 64 version doing the same thing would be limited to 23K for both variables
- and program space, if it is to not disturb GEOS. On the 128, changing the top-
- of-memory pointers for RAM 0 has no effect, so you just have to make sure that
- the text of the BASIC program isn't "too long."
-
- Hmm, off of the top of my head (with some reference to a few manuals), I think
- this would work: no guarantee, though, because I haven't tried it, but am
- composing into my Dialogue128 editor :)
-
- At the beginning of the BASIC program:
-
- 10 poke57,dec("ff"):poke58,dec("5f"): rem set top of variables safely
- 20 rem no need to change top of BASIC text, just make sure program is short
-
- And, at the end of the BASIC program:
-
- 65535 bank1:sysdec("c22c") : call geos enterdesktop routine
-
- Again, no guarantees, but that is what I would try first.

- There are also good programs for exiting and re-entering GEOS128. For
- exiting, I humbly suggest my Clean Reset 128 (in the libraries), which will do
- a clean reset out of GEOS... though it is somewhat slow, since the program is
- anal retentive about resetting all the drives on your system, which involves
- accessing each of them twice right now. Takes about 10 seconds to reset on my
- system with 1 1581 and 1 1571. There is also Jim Collette's NORBOOT which is
- an autoexec that allows you to thereafter reset the computer to native 128
- mode by hitting the 128's reset switch.
-
- To get back into GEOS128, I'd recomment the program "Rescue 128", which unlike
- BSW's RBOOT can succesfully reboot into GEOS even if the drive number
- configurations are different from what GEOS thinks they ought to be.

- The poke to 56 sets top of memory for BASIC programs I believe, and
- the poke 644 turns repeat on for all keys. These are from memory, and
- I would have to check my memory maps when I got home. I don't know
- what the sys does... probably something in the GEOS kernal. The POKEs

- have (which is from the Sep 1991 geoMetrix newsletter), it'll rotate by 45
- degrees. He may have enhanced it by now. Newtools is by Dave Ferguson, and
- is published by Quincy Softworks. The address is:
-
- Qunicy Softworks 9479 E. Whitmore Ave. Hughson, CA 95326-9745
-
- Newtools is on DweezilDisk 1, which had the price listed (in Sep 1991) as
- 17.96 (+ tax if you are in CA). You may want to write first to find out if it
- does arbitrary rotations now (or does anyone know?)

- I received the following clarification regarding the use of MegaFonts:
-
-
- From: S.VANDERARK Steve Vanderark
-
- To: HOWIE-CBM Howie Herman
-
- Sub: MegaFonts
-
- Your description of megafonts is essentially correct, but a little more
- information would clarify things. MegaFonts work "automatically" in
- geoPublish...you simply select 48-point and the program figures out
- where to find each character. In geoWrite and geoPaint you need the
- kind of information about where each chrarcter is which you listed.
- Unfortunately the list you posted wasn't correct. The characters are
- stored in point sizes 48 through 54, with 54 actually containing
- information for geoPublish to use in finding the characters it wants.
- If you are interested in an exact listing of which characters are to
- be found in which point size (it's always the same) let me know. I keep
- a list by my Commodore.

-
- I wouldn't mind if you used what I wrote you. Here's the list of characters
- for the mega-fonts:
- 48 point: ! " # $ % & ' ( ) * + , . -
- 49 point: 0 through 9 : ; < = > ?
- 50 point: A through O @
- 51 point: P through Z [ ] underline
- 52 point: a through o reverse single quote
- 53 point: p through z vertical bar (what IBM-types call a pipe) tilde {
- and other non-standard characters
- 54 point: information for geoPublish; shows up on the screen as garbage
- You can use these fonts in any GEOS application with certain limitations.
- Specifically, individual point sizes (not the whole font, mind you) must
- be small enough to fit in the font buffer of the application in question.
- Font buffer sizes are as follows:
- geoWrite: 6144 bytes
- geoPublish: 4096 bytes
- geoPaint: 4096 bytes
- geoPaint 128: 4500 bytes
- If the font point size is too big, you'll get nothing when you try to
- type with that font.

- While hacking around the other night I came across some info on GeoWrite and
- the Maverick S.E.(sector editor). I was working on a new printer driver for
- the HP Deskjet and found out that GeoWrite doesn't used the PrintASCII,
- StartASCII,
- SetNLQ functions of the driver. It has code in the program that looks like
- it will jump there but it never occurs. To check this I changed these
- positions to a rts in the driver and it had NO effect on how GeoWrite printed.
- However OTHER applacations make use of this code. Maverick's Sector Editor as
- a example. So if your writing a driver it should do the ASCII stuff.
- Now the Maverick S.E. which uses this code has a different "bug". As it
- was written when the First Printer on the disk was the default that is the one
- it will load and try to use. I bring this up as there are now OTHER desktops
- out that will let the printerdriver be anywhere on the disk so you might not
- get the one you want. Others who are working on programs should keep this in
- mind. You should have your applacation Load the printer driver by getting the
- Name from PrntFilename $8465-$8475.

- But wait there is more. I just found out that GeosWrite WILL use the NLQ and
- DRAFT code of your driver..but ONLY if the perm. name in your header is a V2.0
- or higher. This is whether it is a Printdriver V2.0...or DeskjetDr V2.1 as
- long as the version is V2 and up GeoWrite looks for the code. It's just one
- of those Geos things that isn't writen down anywhere till now. Credit needs
- to go to Bill Prendergast as he mentions it in the docs for his GREAT

- The other day after hooking back up my Star NX-1000 after a long time of using
- the HP Deskjet I noticed the following. GEOWRITE for the 64 (don't know about
- 128) Won't print NLQ although there is a Box for it. It switches the printer
- into NLQ but the output has NO spaces. The lines just run together. Tab works
- just no spaces. Has anyone else noticed this or is My copy weird? Anyway I
- found out where in the program this block happens. I think it is a bug that
- never was fixed. For when I changed ONE byte from $20 (space) to $21 if works
- just swell. Which means that the NLQ codes in the printer driver now works
- the way it should. Infact this now means a driver could be made for the
- printer with a selection box that would come up after NLQ is picked that would
- let you select the Three built in fonts or Italic. Elite. ect.ect.. I have
- desided that if there is enough interest in this I'll build a patch to a) fix
- the Geowrite for the 64. b) build a driver for the Star to do the above. Just
- post here if it is wanted or E-Mail me. Also there seems to be some other
- quirks in Geowrite 2.0 such as the ARROW will JUMP if the following keys are
- used.
- LeftShift and ?
- RightShift and Z
- C
- B
- M
- > Which if your on the Right side of the page with

- To continue the discussion of NLQ mode. You have to be sure you use
- Commodore 10 pt font, and bring down the page menu and click NLQ spacing. This
- should take care of the spacing problems ( I won't say most instances) When I

- Forgot about that NLQ spacing..what I have found out SO FAR is by changing the
- one byte you can get NLQ with Tabs and spacing IF you use a "font" that is say
- 24 ppoints you get DBL. spacing. Thi This would mean you could by the use of
- the Fonts change the line spaces in a doc. as you wanted.. Start out single go
- to DBL and back..But perhaps write will let you do this already.. I look The
- strangest part of all of this is Write uses the same part of the program to
- print to the screen in WYSWYG as to send NLQ to the printer.. Those old BSW
- folks just trying to save code. Which is where the "trade off" must have come.
- So I'll hack around a little bit more Then send the patch up for those who
- want it...JBEE if you have a 1581 Tool Kit from Software Support use it to
- look on the disk with GeoWrite 128 See if you can find the following code.
- $68,$AA,$E0,$20,$D0,$1F if it is there use the editor to change the $20 to
- $19 (do this on a copy)
- you should then be able to use NLQ the way it was ment to be. :) Let me know.

- The deal is..GeoWrite 2.+ WILL print in NLQ.
- IF..the printer driver is V2.+ in the HEADER.
- IF..the printer driver is Really set up for NLQ. (some just have a return
- [rts] for NLQ).
- IF..the document you want to print is set to NLQ spacing AND has been set to
- Commodore 10pt. type or one that is similar.
- The point size in the important thing here not the font. Then you get NLQ
- spacing the same as the doc. Tabs, right jusft. all work..Use a font that is
- bigger and you will not get this.
-
- So no patches or anything..How ever there could be some drivers out there that
- while they have the NLQ ability won't work because they don't have the right
- code in the HEADER itself..This would be Changed by useing the Header Editor
- listed in our libs here. Making the permanent name a V2.0. This needs to be
- at spaces 13,14,15,16. see below.
-
- THIS IS THE V2.0
- 1234567890123456
-
- As GeoWrite looks for this 2 or above when it loads the driver..if it isn't
- there then NLQ is not used. I defaults to part of the program that is used to
- print in draft.
-
- I point this all out as there has been, as far as I can tell, no mention of
- this in anything that deals with GeoWrite.
-
- Now that I have found this out it means that drivers can be made to put up a
- dialog box to let you select Fonts.. Sanserif, Orator, Courier as needed. Of
- course other features Like bold, italic, ect. won't come on so you will still
- need to use "feature" drivers like Text Print to do this. But for Q&D print
- outs in NLQ the font selection might be nice. I'll see about doing one for the
- Star NX-1000 as this is the one most folks seem to have. Then the HP..just
- because this is what I use..

- S.ORTIZ, The command that you want to use is HEADER. You will find this
- command in your manual on page 60. Place the HEADER one line before your
- DBFILE command line and as it says in the manual, you will get the file type
- you are looking for. It defaults to BASIC DATA without the HEADER command. To
- get non-GEOS files, use a 0 (zero) as the last parameter of the HEADER command
- string. (HEADER 3,"",0) You should get the non-GEOS sequential files. As the
- manual suggests elsewhere, don't add to sequential files as GeoBasic doesn't
- handle sequential files very well when it is trying to write to them. If you
- are trying to write to them, I would read the sequential file and write out a
- VLIR file type then you wouldn't need the sequential data anymore.

- I have been looking over some other GEOS information and I may have given some
- bad information on the HEADER command for the answer to the first question.
- The GeoBasic manual only identifies file types 1 thru 14 in its discussion of
- the HEADER command. There are actually file types 0 through 15. File type 0
- is a non-Geos (or pre-geos) PRG, REL, SEQ, or USR file type. In other words,
- a non-geos sequential file created with a non-geos program is a file type 0.
- Therefore, if you use the command HEADER0,"",0 You should be able to read
- Commodore Sequential files. Of course this is assuming GeoBasic will allow you
- to use the 0 in the first parameter of the HEADER command. Hope this helps.

- Bugs & geoBASIC:
-
- While geoBASIC is great, it does have a few really annoying bugs. The main
- (and it could be the only one) is the way it loses lines.
-
- This bug appears to be related to the UPDATE command. Don't use it!
-
- It appears that UPDATE will *permanantly* corrupt a file. Instead, RUN the
- file, which will automatically update the file; then use CLOSE or QUIT. NEVER
- use UPDATE. If a file has already been updated by UPDATE, it is corrupted,
- and cannot be uncorrupted.
-
- The bug appears to happen after UPDATE finishes updating the file, when the
- file is CLOSED. However, using RUN then CLOSE/or QUIT appear safe. So the
- UPDATE command, itself, may not corrupt the file, but instead may leave
- something unfinished, or a pointer mis-directed.
-
- Until the bug is sqashed, RUN instead of UPDATE'ing. You can then use CLOSE
- or QUIT, or reset the computer.
-
- My info comes from someone that is working with geoBASIC, and trying to locate
- the bugs.
-
- Ron.

- Well, so far what has been done on GeoBasic is the loading of Doodle Files.
- The Doodle Format can be Loaded to screen in a Snap. A GeoPaint file is
- another story however. GeoBasic is not equipped with the file handling
- neccessary to view or even display a GeoPaint file. Remember even though
- GeoBasic may work on a 128, it does not support it 80 Colomn Resolution. Now

- It is a good suggestion about Geopublish, but to be honest if it doesn't

- Maybe I will just write (or have someone write it for me) a utility to

- Besides the text in the earlier part of this message, file #5342 might
- be of help. It is a text file on the geoPaint format.
-
- It has been awhile since I sold my Amigas but I believe there is a basic
- program on your utilities disk (the 3rd one with Basic on it) that will
- allow you to load IFF files and save them to an uncompressed bitmap.
-
- Here is what I suggest
- Uncompress the IFF files into straight bitmaps (if you are not going
- to attempt moving the color into Geos I suggest grayscaling by using
- ditherings).
- Then compress the raw bitmaps with LHA.
-
- Get them to a C-128 disk and uncompress the files as you need them. This
- will save a lot of time and disks!
-
- Convert them to Basic 8 format.
-
- I have a Geos utility to convert Basic 8 pictures 640x400 B&W to Geos.
- I might have a color version later. I will most likely release the B2 <->
- Geos version on a TC-128/64 disk.
-
- Are you going to be uploading these here as PD?
- If you let me know the whys and hows, there are probably already tools
- ready for you to use, unless you want to do your own.

- What might be the easiest way to convert IFF ILBM's to geoPaints is to use one
- of the number of image file format converters on the Amiga (HamLa Plus is
- one, the demo of which does up to 512x512 images and is freely distributable)
- to convert the IFF file to a GIF, and then use the shareware GEOS program

-
- Hmm, probably I ought to write an ILBM to geoPaint converter... that'll have
- to be a project someday after I write my 8svx to Zounds converter.

- A geoPaint is 640x720, the Handyscanner can do a 640x800 (with the Pagefox)
- capture, and Basic 8 can handle any mono image of 64k. The 64K image
- can be up to 2040h or 819v. You can exceed the vertical length though
- it means cutting down on the width of the screen < 80 characters.
-
- It you want to get fancy under Basic 8 you can display 720+h x 600+v
- using interlace mode.

- Right now, probably your best bet for doing the conversion is to convert the
- IFF or HAM files to GIF using whatever Amiga utility you have, and then use
- the excellent geoGif program by Randy Weems (did I get your name right,
- Randy?) to convert the pictures to geoPaint files. One thing about geoGif:
- you lose all of the color. However, the results are quite nice because geoGif
- dithers the images to give it a greyscale look which, depending on the colors
- in the original image, can preserve much of the quality of the original image.
-
- In principle, it is no harder to convert IFF files, and only slightly harder
- to convert HAM files, to geoPaint dithers in the same manner as GIFs. Perhaps
- Randy could be convinced to expand geoGif in this manner....

- I remember uploading a Amiga IFF to geoPaint converter to Canada Remote

- convert NON-compressed IFF files.
-
- If you can remember the old Mac to geoPaint converter, it never compressed the

- Maybe this is the same type of thing that could happen with Amiga IFF files.

- Wow... not compressing the geoPaint files can make a BIG difference in the
- size of the files! geoPaint has a sort of hyper-RLE compression format that
- works quite will (a little better than normal RLE on the average). And, the
- format is straightforward enough that it really isn't too hard to decompress
- the files.
-
- The Hitchhiker's Guide has some code that will compress a _linear_bitmap_, in
- the "Garphics Routines" chapter. The core of this could be used to compess
- geoPaint files, though it would need to be modified since geoPaint files are
- sorted by card (just like the display on a C64 or 40 column C128 screen),
- whereas a linear bitmap is sorted like the 80 column C128 screen.

- The problem with the Laserjet driver is not the incorrect codes for

- side of the page for whatever reason.
-
- It performs the DPI settings correctly as far as I can tell.
-
- I have used the driver on both the Laserjet, Deskjet, and Paintjet and
- for whatever reason, it just clips the right hand side. The actually
- code for the bitmap settings are okay as far as I know.
-
- Only thing I can think of is when it is setting the low/high numbers
- for the number of data bytes being passed, the actually count is off.
- I would look at changing the third byte from the end of the code sequence
- that sets the number of data bytes to be sent after you set the DPI.

- That is why I need the Panosonic codes. With the HP drivers, they all work.
- But the HP printer can only handle 75 cards wide. Geos is 80 cards wide. So
- some Write files and All Paint files a cut off at the end. Also the HP
- printer wants the "data bytes" as ASCII $31,$32,$30. 120 bytes to follow.
- This driver that I have disemmbled and looked into for the Pano. will print a
- full page at 360 DPI by adding bytes to the output stream to the printer. As
- you know the 300DPI for the HP will only give you a VERY reduced print of the
- page. Handy if you make a lable it the LARGEST font you can and them PRINT
- DOWN. Looks great.. But with the price of these printers coming down. (I think
- HP is getting ready to come out with something new) More may be getting them
- for use with their system thus the need for a BETTER driver. I'm real close
- and this information on the code would really help. Thanks.. Steve. :) *l

- Here is a Geos trick for use with the Disassembler Program. Which IF not here
- I will upload next. This program takes apart Geos Files so you can see how
- they are made. It ends up as a GeoWrite file. The "hangup" is with the VILR
- files that big Geos programs are made up of. Disassembler will let you take
- the modules apart BUT it has no way of knowing where they should fit in the
- main program. So it just gives a ?$0400 location to the first and so on. Now
- if you use a T&S editor like the Mavrick S.E. you can find the list of track
- and sectors for the various modules. Write it down. Then use your copy of the
- Disassembled Main program.
- Note: Disassembler will give the
- file , each time,
- PROGRAM NAME/A so you need to
- rename the file to keep it from
- being overwritten. To find the locations that the Modules are read
- into. In the Calc program that I'm looking into to make a Sideways printer,
- it is a group of program lines that GotoFirstMen. Then it loads the number of
- the mod. 1,2,ect.sets up r7 to the buffer THIS IS THE LOAD ADDRESS then ends
- up at a ReadFile. This brings in the module. So..now you have the Track and
- Sector of the file and the Load to address. Using the Maverick S.E. once more
- change a Text or Calc scrap Header so it points to the Load address and its
- Dir entry points to the T & S of the module you want. Disassemble THIS scrap
- and it will list the program part with the CORRECT hex locations. It sounds
- like a lot of work but isn't it goes rather fast and lets you really see how a
- program works. You then can use Berkly tricks to make smaller and faster
- programs. After I'm all done I'll upload the Code for the geoCalc program so
- those who want can see how it was written.

-
- Hmmm.... that's too bad that Laser Direct is dead. The one suggestion I might
- have is a somewhat roundabout way, but might be possible. There are desktop
- publishing places around that will take (typically) Mac documents and laser
- print them.
-
- A C128 owner might be able to take advantage of this as follows. First, get
- Jim Collette's PS.PATCH (I think it is in the FlagShip libraries). This will
- patch geoLaser and geoPubLaser to write PostScript files rather than to print
- the file directly to a Laser Writer. These PostScript files could then be
- transferred to a "universal" format, i.e. MS-DOS format, with the Big Blue
- Reader. Take the MS-DOS disk with the PostScript file in to one of these
- desktop publishing places that suppot MS-DOS; they should be able to print a
- PostScript file.
-
- In my experience, one needs to add a "%!" at the beginning of the file in
- order to succesfully print on a PostScript equipped HP Laserjet III. This
- could be done with a text editor on an MS-DOS system, or with somthing like
- Pocket Writer 2 or ZED (although I don't know how the latest release of ZED
- will handle the many >>80 character lines you get in a geoPublish PostScript
- file).
-
- The PostScript that comes out of geoLaser or geoPubLaser is already in
- standard ASCII, so do not do any conversion on it.

- I don't know that .arc and .lzh are any less dependable than library or lynx
- files. The only advantage of the latter two would be that if the de-archive
- program can't handle it, if you know the format yourself, you can go in with a
- sector editor and tortuously dissolve the archive yourself. I'm not sure this
- is really practical for large files, though.
-
- In fact, I've found .lbr and .lnx files to be a pain (especially .lnx files)
- because there are a number of different formats out there, and only some of
- the LYNX utilities you find will dissolve a given .lnx file. .arc and .lzh,
- on the other hand, are standardized, and you only need one program for each
- given type, and you can be sure it will be able to dissolve basically all
- complete archives. Then there's the advantage of the self-dissolving versions
- of .arc and .lzh, .sda's and .sfx's - and, here, .sfx wins, because the same
- file can be decompressed on a 128 or a 64. (With .sda's you have to worry
- about which computer the archive is for.)
-
- How do Lynx and Library files deal with XModem padding that ends up on the end
- of a file? (Which can happen with Xmodem-1K downloads, I understand, due to
- the screwy way that GEnie pads Xmodem uploads.) With both .arc and .lzh
- archives, you don't have to worry about it, because the archiver ignores the
- padding, and no padding ends up in any of the extracted files.
-
- Given the padding issues, space and time saving compression, and program
- standardization, I'd vote for ARC or LHarc over library and lynx any day.

- Could someone please tell me what's wrong with my geoPublish?
-
- I bought a used geoPublish, and if I run it with the boot disk I got with it,
- everything runs fine, but if I use the Kernal ID editor, and boot with my
- original boot disk, I can not use any DA.
-
- I tried opening it after I change the Kernal ID, and I can access them without
- any problems, but if I open geoPublish, then close it, either at once or after
- doing some work, I can not use them. Even if I change the ID back to the
- original, it still does not work.
-
- But like I said, this is only if I use my Boot Disk.
-
- Does any of you know what's wrong, and if there is a easy way to fix it?
-
- Thanks

- Hmm, I seem to remember having this problem. I don't remember if the problem
- was associated with changing the Kernal ID or not, since I never used
- geoPublish after booting with the original boot disk (which was GEOS 1.3, if I
- remember correctly), but only with my boot disk and using my NewID program.
- It is _possible_ that something that my KernalID programs is doing is
- confusing GEOS, but this would surprise me... although I guess it is probably
- the only rational answer at this point.
-
- Curious, which KernalID editing programs are you using?
-
- The solution I arrived on was to use geoWizard to run all DA's, since at the
- time I wasn't running with Gateway.
-
- Do other applications other than geoPublish show the same behavior?

- I wouldn't think it would be too hard to make a card template. Keep in
- mind I may not know what I'm talking about since I've never done this ;D
- Seems to me all you would need to do is divide the page into 4 quadrants
- and designate the upper right quadrant as the front of the card. The lower
- left quadrant would be for the inside of the card. On the page the inside
- part of the card would have to be designed upside down in relation to front
- of the card so when its printed out and folded it'll come out right.

- Here's a good way to set off the card into equal quadrants: go to master pages
- mode and place a horizontal guide at 5 1/2 and a vertical guide at 4 1/4. You
- can use the arrow keys to move the cursor one point at a time while you do
- this. I always use the bottom right box as the front of the card and the upper
- left as the inside, but you can do it the other way around if you want to. Go
- to geoPaint to make your upside down picture and text. Create it right side up
- and rotate it (not mirror flip, mind you, or the text will end up backwards)
- to an upside down position. Create a photo scrap of that and go back to
- geoPublish (geoWizard makes this quite a bit quicker). Place the scrap in the
- correct box. There is a card-making program available called geoPrint that
- streamlines this whole process. I think Roger Lawhorn has recently started
- selling it again. Seems to me I saw an advert in a recent Gazette...

- While playing around with GeoPublish I came across a concept that might Help
- others. I was working on a FAX page so I wanted to use the Master Page to set
- the "form" and then be able to import the "text" as needed for any fax. I also
- wanted to use a scanned copy of my bussiness card on it. Every thing was
- going fine Using MEGA fonts of Suburb for the text. Lots of hassels getting it
- to fit where I wanted. Then I did a trial print out. JUNK..bad bad stair
- stepping of the "reduced" font. So here is what I came up with..and it works
- slick. I used GeoWrite to "type set" the fonts I wanted to use. In the right
- or left justification that I needed. THEN I used Grabber..Screen Grab V1.0 by
- Richard Rodin. I got it a long time ago and forgot I had it. It is a DA that
- will make a scrap from any image on the screen. I couldn't use the fonts in
- paint as they were to large.. So I grabbed them put them into a album and then
- just pasted them as graphics into my master page. Which is where I wanted them
- anyway. There were two that I couldn't get the lettering as Tight as I wanted.
- So I went into paint..and MOVED them as needed. I also could use the Scaled
- past to Resize and add extra stuff. I found this to be MUCH faster than trying
- to do it in Publisher. If Grabber isn't here I'll up load it as it is a very
- handy DA to have if you work in graphics of make DOCS that need to have a pic
- of what the screen would look like when using your program. enjoy. Steve :)

- I agree that Screen Grabber is a must have. Unfortunately, it's not public
- domain or shareware and therefore can't be placed in these libraries! It
- appeared in Compute's Gazette several years ago and is copyrighted to Compute.
- I heartily recommend this program to everyone; it (among other things) will
- let you copy an image in geoPublish and paste it down somewhere else, somthing
- the regular tools won't do. You will have to send some $$ to Compute for it,
- however. I'll try to track down the month it appeared so you know what to ask
- for. Another excellent alternative is a program on Lodestar's GEOS Power Tools
- disk, which again you'll have to pay for. That da is called GEO_FETCH and it
- is actually a little easier to use than Screen Grabber. All the tools on that
- disk are excellent, by the way.

- upload them, or are you trying to convert them from CBM format back
- to GEOS (which means you downloaded them from somewhere, like here)
- so you can view them? If you have Convert2.5 for GEos, then the
- process is quite simple. If you have never used the Convert2.5
- program since downloading it, run it in BASIC mode first.. load and
- run in BASIC, as it will run and convert itself to GEOS for you!
- THEN, from GEos mode, dbl click on the Convert icon, and follow the
- prompts to convert other downloaded files back to Geos format.
-
- If you wish to convert GEOS files to CBM format so that you can

- geoSHELL is the product of much time spent in front of a computer,
- programming late at night, weekends, and whenever else I could find the
- time to spend. I am extremely proud of the resulting program and am
- pleased enough to finally release it to the public.
- geoSHELL is a command line interface for use with GEOS V2.0 and works in
- both the 64 mode and 128 mode (40 and 80 columns). It is fully featured
- with over 50 commands and has the ability to read transient commands
- from separate disk files. This keeps geoSHELL from never becoming
- outdated. If you need it to do something it can't do, just write a
- command for it. It is capable of using 'exec' files to automate many
- routine tasks. It also supports the CMD devices in a nice way. Perhaps
- the best support for the CMD devices is the 'path' command. This allows
- you to have geoSHELL stored in just one partition and nowhere else,
- saving you a lot of disk space. Whenever geoSHELL is accessed, it is
- fetched from it's path partition.
- To order geoSHELL, send $24.95 to:
- Maurice Randall
- 215 E. Harris
- Charlotte MI 48813
-
- Or, you can just send me your name and address and I will mail
- you a flyer with additional info about geoSHELL.
- Thank you, Maurice Randall
- p.s. The price of $24.95 includes free shipping to the 48 states. Add

- Invoice Writer II is an enhanced version of Invoice Writer. I wrote this
- program a few years ago ( the original version ) and it first appeared in
- LoadSTAR 66. There is a shareware version of it on Q-Link, but that one
- contains a few bugs, but nothing terrible. The program is basically a sales
- invoicing program intended for any small business. It is customizable with
- many features. It can save your finished invoices to disk after printing. It
- can also save your sales records to disk and will store approximately ten
- years worth of sales records on your work disk (or more if you use bigger
- drives than a 1541). The program is for 64 mode only (not GEOS), however I
- have a version that I have started working on for GEOS, 64 and 128, but they
- may be awhile before they are ready. Version 2.6 of Invoice Writer II is the
- current version and the latest release was just in January of this year. I
- well as any other I write for as long as I
- live. Invoice Writer II sells for only $10.00 including shipping and comes
- with a 40+ page printed manual. Ideal for any small business or any home-based
- business. I'm surprised to see all the different types of businesses that
- have purchased this software from me. Anything from locksmiths, to lawn and
- garden shops, to software stores, hardware stores, etc. There are still a lot
- of 64's being used for purposes like this.

- What I will do is upload the 'real' version minus the sales record retrieving
- capability and the ability to view old invoices. The sales records and old
- invoices will still be saved to disk, you just won't be able to view them or
- print them out. Also, the manual won't be there. It is worth the $10.00 just
- for the manual. But the program is very easy to figure out even without a
- manual. I'll put together an .sfx file and upload it tomorrow night.

- Well, you are just a bit modest to describe the review of Invoice Writer II,

- The reviewer, Steve Vander Ark, uses adjectives like: great, and a real gem

- As requested, Invoice Writer II has now been uploaded to the libraries. You

- I received geoSHELL. Works great. I am impressed with all its features. The
- only problem I've encountered is with 'fcopy'. My system config is as follows:
- C-64... CMD-RD as device 'A'... 1541 as device 'B'... Gateway
-
- Fcopy will not copy from 'B' to 'A'. Works fine from 'A' to 'B'. Seems like
- it's reading the file from 'B' but unable to write to 'A'. System then locks

- Did you actually use a native partition with the DeskTop? The DeskTop doesn't
- really like native partitions. Be careful there. It's possible that you might
- be having problems with the existing version of geoSHELL's 'fcopy' in your
- native partition. I've upgraded this command and included it in geoSHELL V2.1
- which you and everybody who has bought geoSHELL will get for free. 'fcopy'
- also has a duplicate mode now which allows you to copy a file on the same disk
- with a different name. It also copies across partitions properly now. If you
- run across any other problem, post it here so that I can check it out before
- releasing V2.1. (post the things you like also!)

- Just out of curiosity, did you use geoSHELL to get from gateWay to the
- DeskTop. I assume you used the command 'exit DESKTOP' to do this. If you were
- to use gateWay without native partitions, just use the kind of partitions that
- the DeskTop is familiar with... Go into gateWay and set up 'switcher'. Now go
- to geoSHELL and use it to go to the DeskTop. Then you can use 'switcher' to go
- back and forth between gateWay and the DeskTop. It's kinda fun to experiment a
- little.

- For those who use gateWay and also have geoSHELL, this makes a neat way to
- use the DeskTop once in awhile as long as you don't use native partitions.
- This is not saying that there is a problem with native partitions, because
- there isn't. The problem lies with the DeskTop. It just doesn't like 'em.
- Actually it wasn't programmed for them. As long as you have the gateWay (and
- geoSHELL), there is no real need to use the DeskTop. Talking about 'switcher'
- again, you can use it to have the gateWay in one context and geoSHELL in
- another. That works pretty good for some uses. One thing that geoSHELL does
- (or doesn't do) is that it only reads the directory when needed. This is why
- you don't have to open and close disks like you do with the DeskTop. You can
- freely remove and insert disks without informing geoSHELL. It doesn't store
- the directory in memory.

- Okay, I am "tempted" to consider using geoFile but have a couple of
- questions that are not apparent in this manual.
- To says "up to 3000 data records"
- Does that mean the limit to each file is only 3,000 entries?
-
- Can it import data at all? I could not use it if it did not.
-
- Does it work in 80 columns?
-
- This version (I got it used) says 64 fields is the max. Is there a newer

-
- Yep, only 3000 entries per file. I think at one time that was a big number,
- especially back before the 1581, etc. came out and nobody could fit that many
- on a disk anyway... <g>
-
- It does work in 80 columns, but only in the 128 version (and as far as I
- remember it ONLY works in 80 columns). With geoFile and geoCalc there are
- separate 64 and 128 versions since they access the ROMs. If it just says
- geoFile/geoCalc, it's the 64 version - the 128 versions are "geoFile 128" and
- "geoCalc 128".
-
- I think 64 fields is the max... at least if that's what they say it is (there
- haven't been any updates other than bug fixes). Unfortunately there's also no
- easy way to import data short of going through a million text scraps. :( John
- Howard is working on decoding the geoFile data format but so far nobody's
- figured it out so it's hard to write an importer.

-
- I have geoFile 64, and just ran a quick test; geoFile seems to run just fine
- under GEOS128 in 40 columns. Of course, to get GEOS to try to run it, I had
- to change the byte in the header to say that it is runnable from GEOS128 in 40
- columns, but that is easy enough with geoDebugger, or any other sector editor.
-
- I did not run a very extensive test. I haven't used geoFile in many months,
- so I don't remember how to use it. However, I did successfully load in a
- database that I had created before, change layouts, and page through a few
- database entries.
-
- Are you sure that geoFile uses the ROMs? Where does it use them? I suppose
- it is possible that with what I did, I never hit the code that swaps in the
- BASIC ROMs and tries to call them.
-
- With geoCalc, it is obvious what part of the ROMs it needs (floating point
- routines.)
-
- Also, is the geoFile file format documented anywhere? It might not be too
- hard to write a geoFile file importer....

- Well, speaking of importing files, dBASE, and other things...
-
- I *JUST* discovered that as part of my duties as new Treasurer of NYOUG, I
- have the task of sending out the club's notices of upcoming meetings.
-
- No prob I was told. Everything will run from a dedicated dBASE program.
- Right!! :/
-
- Got the disk with the dbf file. A PC-DOS one. No prob. I've got Big Blue.
- It's on a DOS disk, because the outgoing Treasurer ran it from his clone.
- [The club is for Osborne and CP/M users.] Oh, by the way, he upgraded to
- dBASEIII. The dbf file structure is okey. But, those program modules won't
- work, since dBASEII cannot read all the dBIII syntax. Oh? Then here, here's
- the CP/M dBASE program disk used before switching to dBIII. Oh? It may not
- work. He added a couple of more fields recently, but never bothered to
- change the CP/M program, since it ran from a clone. Take the disk anyway, it
- might be helpful...
-
- It turned out to be a Morrow. Here too no prob, I thought. I've got
- Jugg'ler. :/
-
- Getting everything over to the 128's CP/M mode went quickly. A fast read
- from Big Blue, and then quickie install of Jugg'ler, and everything was in
- the REU. But...
-
- He was right. All those program files were useless with the new structured
- base.
-
- I assessed the options:
-
- [1] Run the base from the dBASE "." command, or
-
- [2] Modify all those program modules for the new database.
-
- Neither one of these were too appealing, since using the "." command is very
- clutzsy and time consuming to work with, and re-writing a lot of code for
- limited use, is hard to justify.
-
- So, what to do?
-
- Well, I opted for the path of least resistance. Did a display to get
- structure specifics, then an sdf delimited copy of the base, another read by
- Big Blue to bring it to native 128 mode, and an auto import into Filer2. :)
-
- I've got many good printing modules from other Filer2 bases, that after
- changing a couple of fields do all the required printing. Any 'special' jobs
- will get done by merging.
-
- This all took longer than I expected. About two hours. I was happy to see
- everything go so well, after confronting all those hurdles, that I decided to
- fix up the edit screen to make it look pretty, and played around with moving
- things. About one of those two hours went into this. Wasn't necessary, but
- I figured it would make using the base more pleasant.
-
- The fields aren't structured quite the way I would have set things up. But,
- everything needed is there, and accessible.
-
- I hope that when my term is up, another 128 owner takes over. I haven't
- thought about getting this dbf back into dBASE... :/

- Such a thing should in principle be possible. Where I to attempt it, rather
- than trying to figure out and patch geoFile, I would probably try to find a
- free corner of memory in which to stick some interrupt code. The interrupt
- code would go at the beginning of the GEOS standard interrupt (steal the GEOS

- that have been made; if it was f1-f8, substitue your string in the keyboard
- buffer. This would limit you to <10 character macros; with more complicated
- code (and a larger "free corner"), more could be possible.

- I don't know if this would actually work, or (more to the point) it would

- What kind of printer do you have? Does it have a sheet feeder or can
- you feed cut sheets manually?
-
- If so you could print out the graphics for the labels with GEOS and
- then use a label printing program for 3x labels (believe there are
- several in the libraries that would be suitable). If you have a cutting
- board or have a steady hand, you could buy 8x11 label sheets, print the
- graphics, run it through a second time printing the addresses, and
- then cut the sheet into labels.
-
- I use this method for my silver and hot pink labels :)
- Or you could skip GEOS and use Gary's Label Maker with PSA graphics.
-
- I believe Loadstar has also published several label printers that handle
- graphics and barcodes.

- If you want to stay in the GEOS environment there is also a commericial

- The 144 file limit is not a limit of geoSHELL, but rather a limit that the
- disk driver supplied with GEOS imposes. When geoSHELL's fcoy (mispelled fcopy)
- attempts to copy a file, it asks for an available spot in the directory. GEOS
- either provides it or it claims that the directory is full. If it is full,
- then geoSHELL is unable to do the copy. A future patch will either have
- geoSHELL bypass the normal route, or make a modification to the GEOS disk
- drivers. MRABOY, as for fcopy working as you say on your copy of geoSHELL, I
- may have accidentally sent you a more recent version of geoSHELL than I was
- supposed to have. I didn't want anybody to have anything past the version that
- began shipping late last year until this new V2.2 was finished. In any case,
- V2.2 is now done and the manual update is also finished. All I have to do now
- is get the masters of the manual laser printed and then go to the print shop
- and get a number of copies made. Then beginning with the very first person
- that ordered geoSHELL from me, I will begin sending out free upgrades. It will
- probably take me 2-3 weeks to get all the upgrades sent out, but starting with
- this next week, all new orders will receive the new version. This new version
- is a much more powerful version than V2.0 and has quite a few enhancements.
- Since I've been able to get geoSHELL finished to the point where I am happy
- with it, I've been able to work on my 'other' project known as Finally! In
- fact, Finally! is almost to a sort of 'sneak preview' stage. As to geoSHELL
- again, I've also been working on a geoSHELL developers package that will allow
- GEOS programmers to create commands for geoSHELL. It is a very complete and
- easy to understand package with complete details on all of geoSHELL's
- accessible routines. It is complete with a bunch of sample source code that
- can be used in your own programs. It also includes some additional commands
- with source code for examples. The nice thing about geoSHELL is that a new
- command that is quite useful can usually be written in one or two pages of
- code. As an example, the other night, I needed a utility that would display
- all of the current VDC register settings. So I wrote a short command that was
- only about 1/3 page long and it displayed all 37 registers on the screen.
- Coupled with the '@p' command, I was able to send the output to the printer.
- When this developers package is finished, I will upload it here to GEnie and
- make it available to the public domain.

- V2.2 of geoSHELL will fix any problems you (MRABOY) are having with the fcopy
- command. I'd bet that V2.2 contains around 100 enhancements or fixes over
- V2.0. And to many users, V2.0 was pretty good. The problem is in trying to
- get geoSHELL to work with any kind of possible hardware configuration that a
- GEOS user could come up with. And from all indications, it looks as though
- I've covered all the bases with the upgrade. geoSHELL does a lot of stuff to
- work properly with GEOS. There are a lot of fixes contained in geoSHELL that
- are really not things that are fixing geoSHELL, but fixing problems created by
- other programs. For instance, an early version of geoSHELL would not work with
- the program ScrapIt. The reason was that geoSHELL just happened to occupy a
- certain area of memory that ScrapIt loaded into. This normally is not a
- problem, because geoSHELL is essentially out of the picture when another
- application is running. But the area that ScrapIt checked for a filename of
- the GeoPaint file is was saving as a Photo Scrap was not cleared. This was
- something that ScrapIt should have done when it first loaded, to clear the
- area that it stores filenames in. Another problem with an early version of
- geoSHELL (before V2.0) was that it was not compatible with GeoBasic. It turned
- out to be that GeoBasic left a vector messed up. geoSHELL fixes this. This
- could lead to an eventual crash if it were not for geoSHELL. Also, ever since
- I've been using geoSHELL, I have never seen the problem with the '00' date in
- geoFile. I can't explain this one except that I think geoSHELL's handling of
- the GEOS clock is the reason this problem is fixed. I could go on and on here,
- but I'll stop now because this message is getting kind of big already.

-
- I have over 100 C-1541 disks with geoPaints on them and someone wants me

- Is there anyway to print each picture as a thumbnail on a sheet to fit

-
- I will be using geoPublish with a Postscript printer or Geos 2.0 with a

-
- What I do not want to do is have to load each picture in and crop it

- Hmmm, sound like another feature that ought to be put in geoPager!
-
- Were I to try to do it, I would do it something like this: you would have a
- configuration window that would let you select between (1) 1 geoPaint per
- page, (2) 4 geopaints per page, or (3) 16 geopaints per page.
-
- (This would cram them right next to each other without any space between; the
- other easy choice would be the option of 1 or 9, with the 9 having some space
- between them.)
-
- A _separate_ configuration window (DB) would let you chose the compression;
- note that this compression would really be loss of resolution. Nominally, for
- 9 (or 16) geoPaints per page, you will need to convert 16 pixels to 1 pixel (I
- think this is what the "page view" option of geoPaint does). BUT, if you have
- a condenced printer driver (e.g. a 240 dps driver... hmm, that'd be good for 4
- geoPaints per page) which also condenses vertically, then you could use that,
- get full resolution AND multiple geoPaints on a page.
-
- I wonder if I could fit it in geoPager... would be a bunch of extra code,
- especially the compression (i.e. converting 16 pixels to one pixel). Might be
- possible, though. Easier would be just to put up a window which lets you
- specify nxn paints per page, and let the user worry about having a compressing
- printer driver. (You have a ... laserwriter? HP? The printer driver lets
- you specify a compression, doesn't it?)

- With the HP PCL commands you could send multiple geoPaints to a page and
- determine where they will "start" on the left hand side by setting it within
- the PCL.
- I figure since a geoPaint is only 640 pixels across and a 300 dpi page is
- 2550 pixels across you could fit 4 geoPaints on one line and 16 to a page
- without compressing them (assuming you had enough ram in the printer,
- which I do).
-
- I know geoPublish lets you do thumbnails of a document and as far as I can
- tell at this point it does just that, without compression.

- You could use something like Paint-Scrap to clip the whole geoPaint page into
- a scrap, then paste it directly into geoPublish - either full-size and let
- geoPubLaser do your thumbnails, or alternatively you could just reduce the
- page down right while pasting it in and line up a couple of them all within
- geoPublish itself.. on a dot-matrix printer you'd get compressed output, but
- on a PostScript laser (with geoPubLaser) it just goes at the higher resolution
- so all of the original resolution is still there (just DON'T use smoothing).
- But then again the thumbnail thing probably does just about the same thing - I
- don't think I've ever tried doing thumbnails though.

- HP PCL: what is this? Is this the language used to control the HP printers,
- much as PostScript is the language used to control LaserWrtiers, and HP's
- equipped with a PostScript cartraidge?
-
- Re: repositioning printouts on the page. What does the HP printer driver
- support? 300 dpi would be the best way to do it... although I think that 4x4
- wouldn't fit, since the ususal GEOS size is 80 dpi, you would need 320 dpi to
- cram 4x4 without any space between. 3x3 would comfortably fit 9 images, with
- some space in between, on a page.
-
- This HP doesn't use the same printer driver as the laserjet, does it? If not,
- is the printer driver freely distributable, or did you buy it from somewhere?
- If it is FD, I'd like to take a look at it.

- the geoPaints only a straight dump without any page positioning. It also
- cuts off the right hand side of the page (sigh). I don't know where I got

- The HP driver is the Laserjet driver. The HP Laserjet (version i-ii-iii).

- If it is a patch for geoWrite, I give you 99.9% odds that it doesn't work with
- geoPaint. Patches to programs generally have to be very specific things,
- changing bytes in the code of one program, which is going to be different from
- the code in another program. (I leave the other .1%, though, because there is
- always room in the universe for something new and inexplicable.)
-
- In my very unbiased opinion :D, the best way to do multiple printouts of
- geoPaint file is using geoPager, available on Twin Cities disks #31 and #32
- (or was it #33?).

- Well let me look at GeoPaint to see if it could be patched to make multi
- copies. GeoWrite wasn't that hard. That patch is here on Genie. It has to
- be in the app. itself as that is where the buffer for text is and the cancel
- which is part of the print HI DRAFT NLQ box. It is in this area the patch
- needs to be made so when it reaches the end of the file it loops back. FYI
- there was JUST enough room in Write to do the extra coding don't know about
- Paint till I look. Right now I'm looking into a Sideways print out for Calc.
- But as I have done this (multi print) already I'll do a quick look to see if
- it could happen. Air's :)

- On the other hand, if you want a solution that already exists, there is
- geoPager, available on one of the Twin Cities 128 disks from Parsec. That a
- geoPaint multiple copy printer and more. It lets you select up to 255
- geoPaint files from a disk, and print as many copies of each of them as you
- want in one operation. It's a "geoPaint Batch Printer" as well as a multiple
- copy printer. This way, if you have a lot of geoPaint files you want to
- print out, whether you want one or more copies of each, you can start them
- all printing and not have to babysit your computer.

- you're having problems with the printer going offline with carriage returns in

-
- I would hazard a guess that you are using an REU with gateway, based on what
- you say the symptoms are. If so, you should be able to fix the problem doing
- the following. You should do this right after booting GateWay, and before you
- have copied any files to your RAM disk. Double click on the RAMDisk_128
- driver to get the configuration screen. Click on the down arrow once. This
- should decrease the size of your RAMdisk by 64K. Click on SAVE. Reboot your
- GateWay system (though this may not be necessary). Thereafter you should be
- able to use geoCanvas128.
-
- In case you are interested, what you have done is steal a REU bank from your
- RAM disk so that there will be a free bank for geoCanvas128. GateWay's RAM
- disk driver is more intellegent than the standard BSW RAM disk drivers, in
- that it uses the full size of the REU available- whereas the BSW driver just
- uses the number of banks it needs to emulate whichever disk drive it
- emulates. This means that there are often unused banks in the REU with the
- standard BSW drivers, while no REU banks are wasted by GateWay. Fortunately,
- for those programs that do need to grab a part of the REU, GateWay lets you
- set aside some RAM.

- I think the problem you're running into is a bug in geoCanvas. I've seen this
- condition before, where geoCanvas cannot find a free bank, even when one
- exists. I've seen this not only under gateWay, but also when using a GEORAM
- Kernal (GEOS 2.0r). I held off responding because I've never even seen
- geoCanvas 128, thus I wasn't sure if what you were seeing was unique to it,
- but through what you have described thus far, it sounds like the same problem.
- Jim Collette also mentioned to me that there is some other problem with
- geoCanvas 128 and gateWay 128, though I don't recall the details. The latter
- is something that Jim had discussed with Nate, so Nate should be able to tell
- you. You should really be reporting all this to him, as only he can fix these

- Configure 2.1, which is in the libraries here (files 8432, 8433), supports
- 17xx REU's expanded to 1 or 2 Megs. It does this by introducing the RAM1581
- drive type. Plus, if you have enough REU space and only one physical drive in
- use, you can configure it to have two RAMdisks.
-
- I am not sure if there is a corresponding utility for geoRAM. However, I
- believe that without GateWay, the only sorts of RAM disks you can have are
- those that emulate one of the standard Commodore drives. Since a RAM1581
- requires about 800K, that means that RAM1571 is the best you can do with a
- geoRAM.
-
- GateWay uses a different RAM disk driver which takes advantage of the full
- space of RAM you have available. This applies to GeoRAM, 17xx REUs, and
- expanded 17xx REUs.

- When using the laser printer driver, it just dumps to a bitmap page the same
- as a regular dot matrix driver. The only way under GEOS to take advantage of
- the Postscript laser fonts is under geoPublish.
-
- Almost any laser printer that supports Postscript can be used with

- Jim, I just found & uploaded geoPack, so don't do it. :)
- For those who do not know, geoPack is a dream come true. CONVERT and then
- LYNX GEOS files for uploading in one step FROM THE GEOS ENVIRONMENT (!) and do
- the reverse to anything you download! Will also do batch CONVERTs without
- asking for confirmation with every file. Barely had time to play with it but
- it looks good. JBEE should make it "legal" in a few days.
- Oh yeah- actually works in GEOS 128 on 40 or 80 column screens, as well as
- GEOS 64. Flies in a REU, but should work on any GEOS-supported drive.

- Only problem I have with geoPack is that I'm worried it won't get wide enough
- distribution if people start using it often... the files it produces can still
- be deLYNXed, but LNX files are so rare these days a lot of people don't even
- know how to do that. I'm sticking to .SFX files myself, since I've just found
- a REAL easy and fast way to make them (I send the files over to the Amiga, run
- them through LHArc there and then attach the .SFX header - a ton faster than
- doing it on the 128!) and I love the compression.

-
- I posted a note on the file about Convert 2.5 being the standard for
- acceptable uploads. Unless Bill says otherwise I think this should
- remain the standard.
-
- Though, to me an obvious advantage to the geoPack program is once you have
- packed (lynxed) an archive it should compress much more than 12 different
- files.
-
- On the other foot though ARC and LHArc are standards by which the whole
- computer community uses. Though that doesn't mean we have to be sheep

- LYNX doesn't do any compression though, that's the whole point... when you do
- multiple files, it just changes the T/S pointers around so it looks like one
- big file. No compression whatsoever, and actually if you had 100 files that
- were just 2 bytes each, it'd link them all together and you'd not only get the
- 2 bytes in each sector but the 252 blank ones as well... would have 25200
- bytes of wasted space by the time you were all done! The original purpose for
- LYNX was just to be fast and to work on REL files, he never intended for it to
- compress the files.

- Wouldn't it be nice to have a geoApplication that took a group of selected
- geoFiles, compressed them using the LHA format (or something like that)?
- And then did the reverse for a big "geoArc" file that you just DL'd. And
- would also just do a CONVERT if you selected a single file.
-
- Granted, that would give you another type of file, but it would only be in
- the GEOS libraries. (We have both compressed & non-compressed files in all
- of the other file areas.) And since it would do single files also, it could
- become the new CONVERT.

- Don't tell me .... it's already in the works! Right?

- To add to what JBEE has mentioned, I am still working on a GeoArc program
- based on Chris Smeets Arc program. I have been messing with it on and off for
- quite awhile now, though a busy and unpredictable professional life hasn't
- afforded me much opportunity to get past the design of the interface and the
- general layout of the program.
-
- While the subject is up, how do you guys see this thing working? What I have
- so far is this:
-
- Simple menu system, with 2 optionsm GEOS and FILE.
-
- Vlir structure to allow for different kinds of compression routines IF and
- when I can translate some more (lzh and zip would be prime candidates)
-
- At the moment, it is purely a dissolver, it will not create archives. Since
- Convert exists in a DA format, I see no need to include a convert option, just
- call Convert from the Geos menu.
-
- Oh, and let me stick a thanks to Bill and to Chris Smeets for giving me the
- materials to do this project, I know its been forever, but I WILL have it done
- sometime in the next few months.

- Ideas anybody? If somebody has a keen suggestion I will certainly try to

- - an option to decompress on-the-fly during a download would be
- nice. Something like that would have to be in a revision of
- geoTerm; anyone know if The Master Blaster has plans to continue

- - an integrated CONVERT would be nice- just select the files you want

- as (as you said) CONVERT exists as a DA. (Only one I use!) I look

- From the little I have looked into calc and yes I would like to do this myself
- for spread sheets You would need a sep. app. to read the file and print it.
- calc hasn't as most of the BSW apps. the room to turn something sideways while
- printing and most print drivers don't have the way to do it.
- So it would take a separate app to do it. First it would have to make
- either a bitmap up sideways. or have a sideways font in it. then it would have
- to have space to store the sideways file.
- Then to print it out. So it might be done it would just take some work. Let

- Well it starts to get more comp. when you look into a Calc file.. the "LABLES"
- are there but all of the actual CALC is in a code that the app. uses to make
- it work. When the program "cuts or copys" a scrap it will convet all of the
- information into printable code. If it makes a CALC scrap it won't make this
- convert.
-
- SO>> to print sideways you MUST make a text scrap of the Calc page or area you
- want . The question now is could a "paint" or "publish" have the memory left
- to rotate a really G file..?? I need to see how the TEXT scrap is stored..
- Still working on it.

- At this point it would seem that first one would need to make a Scrap File of
- the Calc data and then run a app. that would print it sideways. It would need
- to have the ability to lay the screen out SIDEWAYS with its' own font and then
- dump it to the printer. I think it might be good if it could be set up to
- print on a 14" page for those of us who don't use tractor feed. The reason
- that this needs to be a stand alone program is that it will use a Big buffer
- to make this shift. I'm open to input if someone has any other thoughts on

- It is possible to do color in geoPaint, in GEOS64 and in 40 columns in
- GEOS128. geoPaint is limited by the hardware color scheme of the C64. Since
- GEOS doesn't use the low resolution 160x200 4-color mode, each 8x8 block on
- the screen can only have two colors, a foreground color and a background
- color.
-
- You can set your current working foreground and background colors. As long as
- you have color set to on under the options menu (I think it is the options
- menu), whenever you draw, any 8x8 block you draw over will have the foreground
- and background colors set to the current working values.
-
- Alternatively, you can go back later and "color in" your image, by using the
- "color" option. This directly changes the foreground and background colors of
- the 8x8 block the cursor is over. This is somewhat more powerful and has more
- detailed control than the other method, but isn't so easy to use.

- GEOS operates in high-resolution mode, so all GEOS applications do as well.
- The graphics mode is what determines the color option. Of course, most GEOS
- apps don't support color at all. Both geoCanvas and geoPaint operate in high-
- res and therefore have the same color setups. There is an app on QLink that
- will let you view multi-color graphics from within GEOS, but you can't work on
- them, only look at them. There are also conversion programs that will let you
- import a multi-color (sometimes called medium-resolution or Koala format)
- image into high-res. But in GEOS you always work within the constraints of the
- high-res mode of the Commodore's video chip.
-
- There is nothing that says that a GEOS app can't switch modes, by the way,
- except for the fact that one of GEOS' claims to fame is that things like
- graphics can be shared between apps, like using a geoPaint graphic image in
- geoPublish. If you created an image in a different mode, it wouldn't e
- interchangeable with the rest of GEOS apps.

- Another, and possibly cheaper, way out of it, is to use some sort of Kernal ID
- changer. I think there are a couple of them out there, but the ones I know
- are, well, the ones I wrote :)
-
- I _think_ these are in the libraries here, but am not sure. The way to use
- them:
-
- (1) Boot with the "other" boot disk (not the one you want to use normally) and
- run the program GetID. Write down the for digit hexidecimal number it
- returns.
-
- (2) Boot with your normal boot disk, and again run GetID and write down the
- hexidecimal number.
-
- (3) Make two copies of NewID, renaming them appropriately, and configuring
- them in the info box for the two ID's you have written down.
-
- (4) Before running a program originally installed under the "other" boot disk,
- simply click on the appropriate copy of NewID.
-
- (5) Use the other copy of NewID to restore your Kernal's runtime ID to the
- original value to use software installed with your normal boot disk.
-
- Sound like a lot of steps, but the first three are one-time setup (and easy at
- that), and thereafter you only have to do either step (4) or step (5) before
- running whatever software. Note that this does require that you have access
- to BOTH boot disks... right now, I don't have any software that can "sniff"
- applications and figure out what was the ID of the Kernal used to install it.
-
- All of this is documented in my KernalID archive. I will check to see if that
- program is indeed online.

- You know, besides just deleteing the regions on a page, I don't think there is
- a way to delete a page. And by deleting regions, you still have the page. A

- have page deletion::::Maurice, are you out there?

- Watch for geoMorph to appear in the libraries here just as soon as it is made
- live. I will be available to answer any questions concerning the program. Feel
- free to post them here. Also, post any comments, good or bad here about this
- new GEOS application. The program includes a GeoWrite file describing each
- function of the program along with a brief tutorial. It only consists of 7 or
- 8 pages, so it may not be as detailed as it could be, but this is a shareware
- program with a plus. The 'plus' is that nobody has to feel guilty about not
- sending in the shareware fee. Go ahead and use the program, but provide
- feedback. If the documentation is not clear enough for everyone, just post
- your question here, and it will be promptly answered. Thanks, and enjoy.

- I tried it, and loved it. However, there was one problem I encountered. (I
- don't think it's a bug thou.) I had a drawing of three rectangles stacked on
- top of eachother. Then I morphed the By Maurice Randall with the Boxes.
- After about 5-6 frames, it started moving one dot back and forth. It would
- not go any further.
-
- Just thought I'd let you know. Oh, and I could not recreate the same thing
- again. Even with the same photoscrap.

- Actually, that is not really a bug as much as it is just a nuisance. What is
- happening is that occasionally, and there has to be a certain number of pixels
- on a scan line, the left scan and right scan will interfere with each other.
- The right scan will position a pixel in one spot and the left scan will move
- it back to where it thinks it should go. You will only notice this when the
- primary image is almost completely taken on the appearance of the secondary
- image. You can at this point just freeze the frame, copy it to a photo scrap
- and edit it with GeoPaint. Or, you could go to the control panel and turn off
- either the left or right scan and then continue on and it will finish
- processing correctly. This is the nice thing about being able to adjust the
- control settings between each frame.
- This little problem is being addressed in the commercial version of the
- program. Also a better morphing when both the horizontal and vertical scans
- are turned on is being addressed.
- This program started out as just an idea to see if it could be done and
- especially on a 1 mhz machine. I'm surprised that it actually scoots along as
- fast as it does considering how much processing is taking place. Creating the
- interface for this program took no time at all, it was all the mathematical
- routines contained in it that I spent all the time on. To the user it is very
- easy to use, and looks simple, but inside those little guys are just working
- their buns off.

- All printers which emulate Commodore 1525 or MPS-801/2/3 type printers suffer
- from this problem, because they all output based on a 60 dpi (dots per inch)
- resolution, and GEOS (and its applications) were designed for an 80 dpi
- standard. This means that when you print out something that uses more than 480
- dots per line, you lose part of the image to the lack of printer resolution.
- There ARE some intelligent printer drivers around for printers like yours that
- will 'dither' the image down from 640 dots per line to 480. You lose detail,
- but you get the whole image this way. I don't believe we have any of these
- drivers online as yet, but will have them up here before too long - so be
- looking for these. All in all, though, I heartily recommend a printer upgrade;
- your documents will all come out looking much better.

- I will be getting a printer driver uploaded in the next few weeks for the
- Star SL10C. It will print ou in 80 dpi if you have the chip upgrade. Actually,
- I'll be getting it Dec 17th. It may solve some of your problems. Concerning
- the Epson, I have an old Epson RX-80 that works fine. I am a Epson8pin3pass
- driver and a Epson8pin80dpi driver. These drivers give me excellent
- printouts.(whoops:I am not a Epson8pin3pass driver, I use it. LOL) These
- drivers work with my Epson and Panasonic printers, and printout in 80 dpi.
- Those drivers may be file# 9223, but I'm not sure.

- Practically any Epson or Epson-compatible that has come out since the Epson FX-
- 80 will work great. I personally like the Panasonic printers myself for low-
- cost dot-matrix. Panasonic has great Epson emulation, and their printers use a
- re-inking pad inside the ribbon cartridge that keeps the output nice and dark
- for a long time.

- My 128 nd 1581 died a couple weeks ago. Until I can get a replacement, I am
- using a stock 64 borrowed from a friend. How can I get GEOS to load files

- BigMac,
-
- A 1571 attached to a C64 will initialize itself in its 1541 emulation
- mode. You need to tell the 1571 to become a 1571 again, in order that
- it can access 1571 disks.
-
- The following (entered in direct mode, and followed by a <CR>) will do
- this:
-
- open15,8,15,"u0>m1":close15
-
- Once this is entered, you should be able to load and run all programs
- on all disks, 1571 or 1541.
-
- For convenience, you might want to format a 1541 disk, and save the
- above entry as a file on it. This way, when you start out, all you need
- to do is place the disk into the 1571, and
-
- LOAD"*",8
-
- RUN
-
- Or, even easier, just PRESS Comkey/Run-Stop. :)
-
- Then you can swap out the disk and run the 1571 programs.
-
- Howie
-
- Oooops...
-
- That one line program that you would save to disk would look like:
-
- 10 open15,8,15:print#15,"u0>m1":close15
-
- If you need any help getting this onto disk, or to work properly,
- let us know.

- We've never had contact with the author on this, and we have no source code
- for it, so if a patch is ever done, it would have to be done the hard way. I'd
- be a little concerned that the program couldn't keep up with 2400 baud as far
- as output to to the screen goes, at least without major rewrites of that
- portion of the code as well. Anyway, we have no plans on upgrading it

- I'll have to check it out a little myself, but I can guess what has happened.
- Geoworks contacted us about that area, as they obviously were no longer going
- to handle it. We told them that with Q's library problems we had no desire to
- take over a support area there that could not be properly maintained - but
- that if Q wished to keep the message areas and current download files for GEOS
- under their own maintenance that they could. But the outdated information on
- where to get GEOS, GEOS support, and stuff like the way out-of-date info on
- geoWorld had to go. We left it up to Geoworks to talk to Q about this, and
- apparently Q decided they didn't wish to maintain things themselves (no big
- suprise there, eh?).
-
- OFFICIAL ONLINE GEOS SUPPORT is now HERE - on GEnie.
-
- As for GEOS Support in our area on Q, it's nothing they've contacted us about
- or anything we told them.
