- These printers listed below are fairly common, cheaply priced, and
- guaranteed to work with almost any piece of software.
- Star
- $129 NX-1001 (believe this is just a fancy NX-1000)
- 9 pin - slow - but works with all Epson 9 pin software
-
- Panasonic
- $149 KXP1180i (get the "i" version - newest one)
- 9 Pin - a lot of features - but if you do only Geos and other bitmap work
- you won't use them. Nice paper handling, low priced consumables.
- $199 KXP1123 24 pin - nice
-
- Numbers to call
- USA FLEX 1-800-USA-FLEX
- Midwest Micro-Peripherals 1-800-423-8215
-
- Computer Shopper is filled with ads, if you want to do some shopping you
- could probably save some bucks. Ask what the shipping charges are before
- you buy. A lot of cut rate deals aren't after the shipping charges.

- the Kxp-1123 is a good 24 pin choice. I use mine with a G-wiz interface, and

- nice! My interface can't >be had any longer [most higher end types would do?]

- Tim,
-
- I believe that any software that allows for user defined printer files, and
- user defined character input, will let you use the color features to some
- degree.
-
- For example with Pocket Writer unused pitches could be redefined for printing
- lines of defined color. Defining characters, and embedding them within text
- ought to allow for character defined colors.
-
- Redefining characters with PW would give 9 possible color codes. You would
- lose the WYSIWYG feature, but considering the pretty output, it might be
- a worthwhile tradeoff.
-
- If you do this with your word processor, be sure to save the re-defining
- as templates, so that it only has to be done once. :)

- You could also save each "command line" as a file and append it into your
- text where you need it.
-
- Example:
- qqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqq (append +red) qqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqq
- qqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqq (append +black) qqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqq
-
- Where +red, +black would contain the line of escape code need to change
- colors.
-
- This is sometimes the best approach with programs such as Paperclip iii
- because some commands will not fit within the six-eight digits assigned
- for printer commands.

- Just bought a Epson ActionPrinter 5000 (LQ-570 equivalent), a fast 24- pin
- printer, for $211.
- So far it is compatible with everything, and can use existing Epson 9-pin
- printer drivers without modification most of the time, including fully
- compatible 9-pin graphics modes.
- Also has special features: true 360*360 graphics, 11 LQ fonts (two are
- scalable like a laser printers), and very nice, dark print quality, even on
- graphics.
- Probably the most exceptional thing, though, is the paper handling
- capability. It's internal tractor feed can operate as a push or a pull
- tractor, and it can paper park, and feed from the back, bottom, or front.
- Single sheets can be fed from the top or front, and you can buy single or
- double bin sheet feeders if you want that capability.
- All in all, I couldn't be more pleased with this printer. I have no
- complaints...well, only one real complaint...they never include character
- width tables with printers anymore! I have completed a working PaperClip III
- driver that can do proportionality, but without the printer width tables
- (which I have written off for and hopefully should get soon), it does me
- little good...
- (BTW, as soon as I get the char widths, I'll upload the driver...)

- Do they still plot the bitmaps of the characters on grids in the appendicies?
- You could get widths from that (a pain, though). They did that in the manual
- for my old (semi-retired) Gemini-10X, and I believe in the star NX-10 too...
-
- Also, you could get "cheap" character widths by printing out 80 of each
- character on a line and measuring... by printing lots, you reduce the effect
- that slight measurement errors have on your final calculated width.
-
- Or, you could wait for the character width tables to come in the mail ;)

- I believe this printer can not do bitmap graphics, only Commodore graphics
- (like the ones found on the side of your keys). To switch to "text" mode
- you would use a secondary command channel of #7 for the printer, if I

- what is wrong with it?? what do you mean by broken? If all it has done
- is slipped out of the socket inside, this is easy to fix. Remove the
- screws on the bottom (be sure to put a disk in the drive to secure the
- heads from rattling around) and turn back right side up. Remove the
- cover. By the lever is a short metal pin which slides across the thingy
- that holds the head down. Slide this back into position, drop the
- tiniest touch of glue on the end to hold it in place, and put the cover
- back on and screws back in. Whala.. simple and easy. However, if the
- lever itself is broken, have no idea where you can find a replacement. :>

- Fred,
-
- This sounds like good news and bad.
-
- The immediate cause of the clock not running is probably a blown fuse, and
- fixed by nothing more difficult than replacing it with one of equal value.
-
- The bad news part is that that fuse blew for a reason. And the reason may
- blow a new fuse and need fixing.
-
- JBEE is good with things electronic and can probably suggest a more concise
- course.

- In the long and short drive boards, there's a spot that you can tap into that

- Right next to the cap and diode, where the five volts is fed in the the reset

- One of the least expensive ways of using the C-128 without a disk
- drive with battery backed memory is a Quick Brown Box. The Brown Box
- is about the size of a game cartridge and plugs into the expansion port
- on the right hand side. It comes with 64k to 256k of battery backed
- memory and can serve as a disk drive with many programs.
-
- Though most of the "commercial" software will not work with it.

- Well, an other way it to *always* leave the power to the C128 turned on.
-
- Actually not a bad idea considering the stress that many on/off cycles
- place on electronics.
-
- Adding a REU with one of those new(?) emergency battery attachments I see

- The *BEST* way IMHO, is with the addition of a RAMLink.

- No, to save the contents of memory in a C-128 or C-64 you need to us

-
- Ramlink, Ramdrive, QBB, battery backed REU, disk drive, etc.
-
- Once you flick the switch off, everything in the computer is gone.
