- For the second time, my 1571 now fails to read the back side of double sided
- disks. The problem developed after an intensive period of copying (not
- protected software or anything exotic. Using FastHack'em 6.0 on files
- downloaded from GEnie, our user group bbs, etc. This is the same thing that
- happened last time. Fortunately, the club paid for it since I was using it to
- make disk copies of the club's library file. I was told it required a whole
- new internal mechanism, at a cost of $150. Is there a workaround, or a fix I
- can do myself or is this thing dead?
-
- I am not worried about my files, tho I can't acces them. I know they are
- safe. Just want to know if there is anything short of panic that I can do.
- Thanks!

- Ed,
-
- Didn't JBEE just mention about replacing the drive mechanism with any of
- the generic ones on the market today?
-
- I think they would cost around $50-55, altho I have seen some as low
- as $35-40. The thing is to identify a Make/Model number that is
- compatible, get a copy of Computer Shopper, and call the places that sell
- the drives, for one that has the needed make/model.
-
- BTW, all those calls ought to be toll freebies too! :)

- Ed,
-
- I had problems like that with one of my 1571's at one time. Would write
- to disk ok until a certain point, then all sorts of errors would show up.
- The remedy I used was to stretch the hold-down (lack of better description)
- spring located on the top side of the head assembly. It's rather small so
- careful you don't lose it ;) My drive hasn't given me any more trouble for
- the last 4 years. Sure beat sending it to the shop!

- I'm game, Mark. But do you stretch it so it pushes the head down or pulls
- the head up? I assume the down direction. On a more glum note, the drive
- won't even format a disk in any mode. I know it is one head only, because

- Ed,
-
- I ran into the same situation myself with the internal 1571 in my 128D. The
- bottom r/w head went bad, and I discovered the entire drive module would have
- to be replaced at about $150. Since an new 1571 wasn't worth much more than
- that at the time, I decided there had to be a better (or at least cheaper)
- solution.
-
- I bought the latest copy of Computer Shopper and searched it front to back for
- distributors selling 360K 5.25" IBM drive modules made by Mitsumi (the
- manufacturer of the drive module in my internal 1571). Anyway, I found one
- for about $50 from a company called the Treasure Chest. The drive I got was
- nearly identical to the original one except for the r/w head :-(. Stepper
- motor, drive motor, etc. were all the same. The connectors were different,
- but, except for the r/w head, it was obvious how everything matched up. I had
- to do a little testing and use a little knowledge about r/w heads to figure
- out how to hook it up properly, but all in all, it was surprisingly simple.
- It's performed flawlessly for 2 years now, and I believe the module I got is
- of better quality than the original; it appeared to be a newer revision or
- something. Unless you're fairly comfortable with a soldering iron I wouldn't
- recommend doing it yourself. As far as I know Treasure Chest is still around,
- but anyone selling the Mitsumi drive mechanisms should do. Most likely it
- wouldn't even have to be a Mitsumi mechanism, although a drive module from a
- different manufacturer might be more difficult to get working. The label on
- the drive module I got has the following...
-
- ------------------------------------ D503V 0254629 Newtronics Co., LTD. [FCC
- stuff] FCC ID:GFZ D503V
-
- Cosigned by Mitsumi Elec Co., LTD. ------------------------------------
-
- Apparently D503V is the model number. D502 is what's on your mechanim right?
- I just looked and that's what's on my old mechanism also. Hope this helps.

- I'll definitely be waiting to hear from you on the mechanisms John. Howie: I
- had the cover off yesterday and was poking around in there. I changed the
- device number to 11 so I could leave it on line and use my 1581 as drive 8 (no
- particular reason for doing it that way). I was able to get the format to
- work sort of, but only to track 24 if I 'am taking the right meaning from
- the error returned when the drive burps.
-
- All of my 1571 format disks read only 664 blocks, or rather, 0 blocks free,
- because one side of them is filled. I can't really get a format to work at
- all, can't save prgs, etc.
-
- Here is what led up to it. I had been copying disks for about 2 hrs I guess,
- using Fast Hack'em 6.0 (all pd stuff, not anything copy protected or
- commercial or anything). It just stopped all of a sudden. There is one other
- thing that I have been wondering about too.... on some disks, the read/write
- slot (where the floppy peeks thru the envelope) seems to catch on the upper
- head. Only way to get it out is to play with it, but I'm wondering if that
- also took its toll.
-
- On the up side, maybe, if John can find a source of mechanisms for $25 or $30
- (that a cow like me can install) it will be well worth keeping this drive and
- just feeding it a new mechanism every 2 or 3 years. And John, if you can do
- this, I will also post that out on FIDO because there are others I see from
- time to time that run into this. I know they wouldn't mind paying a
- reasonable price for something like that so that everyone makes a little.
- Thanks, and let me know how you make out. I'm really halfway into limbo
- without my 1571. :-(

- Ed,
-
- Yea, I agree. If its stopping at track 24, then it isn't even completing
- a format of side one.
-
- A disk getting stuck on the top head, which is the second side, shouldn't
- affect things on side one. Unless the heads move in tandem? Maybe
- they do? I've never looked at the inside while one was running.
-
- RX: Probably the new drive mechanism. :)

- I am curious to know if this means that you can replace the entire mechanism
- of a 1571, or if this conversation is about some sort of part swapping like
- one disk drive head to another or something. If it's possible to just go and
- buy an IBM style 5 1/4" drive and use it instead of the mechanism within the

- Yup! :)
-
- Once you take off the case to a 1571, it is only 4 (or maybe 6?) screws that
- keep the drive mechanism attached. Oh! Two plugs, too.
-
- However, the tricky part is being certain that the 5 1/4" drive

- Okay, I found a place where we can buy refurbished 360K drives for $30 :)
-
- Now the catch is I need help figuring out all the wiring as it doesn't
- match up.
-
- These are "Shugart" disk drives. They come with all the PC controller
- boards once you strip them down they are pretty much the same except the
- wires
- are different colors.
- Remembering what someone said about the number of wires in the R/W heads
- (5 vs 6) I got one with five wires!
-
- As far as I can tell, if you pop the wire terminals out of the connectors
- and into the C-128D (or external 1571 connectors) connectors in the right
- order these drives should work. The stepper motor setup looks a bit
- different
- and I don't know about the power consumption but they are 1.8 degree
- steppers.
- They "might" not to 1/2 tracks, no big loss unless you play games.
-
- Since I don't have my repair manuals for the 1571 or C-128D since I gave
- them all to ZIP I am in the dark about what connections are what.
- I wouldn't even be able to start guessing.
- So here is my offer.
-
- If someone has the skill and proven know-how about hardware type things I
- will send you the drive to fix PLUS write up the fix as hardware article
- for TC-128. I will pay you a moderate amount of cash and a free
- subscription.
- Figure this has to be better than the $150 cost quoted in Compute for
- a new drive assembly from Commodore!
-
- Ed, so if you know anyone on the nets willing to tackle this let me know.
- I picked "Shugart" because they are an industry standard setter. If you
- have to buy a disk drive having the Shugart model number to cross reference
- to something else makes finding replacements easier.

- Speaking of drive heads, check out this ~Beleive It Or Not!' experience
- that I recently had with a non-working 1571 disk drive.
-
- Here's what it was doing:
- -------------------------
-
- * Would not format a double-sided disk. Single-Sided--no problem.
- But when it came to double-sided, it would bomb as it started on the
- second side. (24 or 26,READ ERROR,00,00)
-
- * Showed 664 Blocks Free on a newly formatted double-sided disk, that
- was formatted on a known-good 1571.
-
- * Could not access anything on tracks 36 thru 70.
-
-
- Here's what I did:
- ------------------
-
- * Cleaned the heads with 91% Isopropyl Alcohol.
- (Made me feel better. But still NOGO.)
-
- * Tried a different format. MS-DOS, 9 Sector. (Don't ask me why.) And it
- worked! And it checked good. (I use the MS-DOS Disk Formatter program
- from RUN #65 / May 1989)
-
- * Tried the regular Commodore format again. It worked! And again and
- again and again. It kept working. And it still does.
-
-
- And ~Beleive It Or Not' (I couldn't beleive it myself.)
- ----------------------
-
- I had another C=1571 drive mechanism on the shelf for the same problem.
- And when I put it through the same process, (sans the cleaning, cuz I had
- tried that on this one before) and *it* came-up formatting! Man! I really
- couldn't beleive it.
-
- All I'm saying is that if it worked for me TWICE, it could work for others.
- I hope so.

- BCP,

- That's funny! Just this week I ran into the same prob, for the first time,

-
- It's not any disk prob, since a 'checksum' of the loaded Basic gives the

-
- I still haven't figured out why it won't run on my 128. I've tried
- unplugging all my 'smart' accessories, but that didn't seem to make any

- either drawing power from the cassette port (for printer peripherals), or
- having Basic8 on a chip.
-
- The program was short, but did some very fancy poking of data from the SID,
- and I suspect, altho I really am not sure, that it is using some exotic

- There are some C64 programs that won't run on flat 128s because they
- are expecting the newer sids and fixes in the c64 roms in the c64c.
- Or others because they expect the earlier version of the roms, which we
- were changed for the better in the c128 (flat) butwere changed back again
- in the C128d because of software using keyboard buffers, timers, etc that
- they shouldn't!
- All in all it means most programs will run except heavily, poorly written
- programs.
- I have also found out some newer Basic 8 programs like the V7 viewer
- won't run on my flat 128 with the B8 rom because it expects the newly
- patched Basic 8 version. Oh well!
- Although the 128s are 100% C64 compatible, there is some software written
- that is determined not to run on them or maybe a C128D.
- That is the benefit of buying software from a good vendor like Briwall
- because you can return it for something that works :D

- Do I have news for you!
- There IS incompatibility built into the c128d's 64 mode. I found it the
- HARD way. I know of 4 games that won't work on my 128d:
- Ferrari Formula 1, Outrun Europa, Turbocharge and Navy Seals
- All these games (from the UK) will not run their graphics on the 128d, but
- run perfectly on my 64c.
- Aparently, it has to do with ONE register (believe it, if you like) in the
- PLA chip called the Gate Array register. The 128's is diffirent from t the 64.
- Now this should'nt make a diff, but these new games also make the 64 do things
- that are'nt possible on it! eg 17 frames per sec update !?!?!
- A friend had his PLA replaced a while ago, and most games work... some
- still hiccup. I could'nt change mine... cos I can't find the PLA chip! It's

- The reason that some C64 mode programs do not run on C128s or C128Ds is not
- because of the almost non-existant differences but because of bad programming
- habits and not testing them properly.
- Heavy copy protection is the other reason.
- A lot of programs that use direct jumps to routines instead of through the
- Kernal will not run on computers with different rom versions.
- The other reason is that the internal 1571 does not have the controller
- the external 1571 disk drive has so it will not run any programs that
- write directly to it's non-existant controller.
-
- I have had some of the older Activision titles run on a SX-64, but not on a
- flat C128, C64 old style, and C-128D.
- Go figure.
-
- re:PLA
- I believe Grapevine sells just about every PLA Commodore has made. I also

- I have a few problems with my VDC. Does anybody else have these problems? Or
- does everybody have them? Does anybody NOT have them? Here are the major
- symptoms:
-
- (1) With terminal programs (this is where I've seen it) (I've seen it in VT100-
- 128, Kermit, and DesTerm), sometimes when the screen is cleared, a character
- on the right side of the screen isn't erased with the rest of the screen.
-
- (2) With GEOS 128, often there are little "glitches" on the screen, either
- black or white horizontal lines 8 pixels long where there shouldn't be. For
- intance, on a completey grey screen (such as you see upon entering
- geoAssembler, say) there will be one or two little white 8-pixel lines. Or, on
- the deskTop notepad, there wil be one or two little black 8-pixel lnes.
-
- (3) The double-width character VDC 40 column mode has never worked for me.
- I've tried it in DesTerm and with Randy Winchester's VDC manager (on the
- KeyDOS ROM). In DesTerm, I get two horizontal lines of @'s down the screen;
- with the VDC manager, things are even more screwed up.
-
- (4) I have the character set and intro screen problems with Dialogue128 that I
- list on the Dialogue128 support topic.
-
- Does anybody else get these? Are these software problems, or do I have a
- hardware problem? Are my hardware problems likely in the VDC, or in one of
- the CIA's, or somewhere else? I popped open my 128 and took a look at the VDC
- (I have the SSI 64K upgrade, but I had these VDC problems before with only
- 16K, so that isn't the sorce), and this is the writing on the chip: MOS
- 8563R7A 2885.
-
- If it's an old chip, or one with problems, how much would a new one run me?
-
- Thanks,
-

- I think the problem is with both the software and VDC. There were problems
- with the R7 and R8 versions of the VDC, including internal problems. There
- are also internal differences but everyone programs for R9b so a lot of
- programs (such as Ipaint) have to be rewritten once the authors find out not
- everyone has a R9b VDC like they do. This will mostly show up in interlace
- programs.
-
- It could also be that the chip is bad. Most of the bad VDCs I have replaced
- are R7 and some R8 VDCs. So, you could indeed be feeling the effects of
- a bad chip and a chip that does not work properly with your software.
- Usually when the VDC goes you start getting stray characters like the
- "at sign" and then it gradually gets worst until you do not have a 80 column
- screen at all.
- I suspect the problem is just having a older version of the chip.
- I would replace it anyways so it works properly with the new software.
- (and while you can still get the chip, save your old one as a backup)

- Just take the power connector off the motherboard.
- I would have some doubts about doing this because of serial buss loading
- and timing. If you find it getting in your way make it device #11 (so
- Geos will not see it).

- BEFORE booting GEOS, there's a hardware method I learned from a friend:
-
- Find U113
- Cut pin 1 at the point where it enters the board(use exacto knife).
- Put a SPST switch between pin 1 of the IC and where pin 1 used to enter
- the board.
- You can mount the swicth anywhere, preferably under the drive led
- somewheres(there's lots of room on the 128D's front panel underledge).
-
- With the ATN line out of the serial loop(switch open),the device is
- effectively off the bus and wont be recognized,no matter what device # you use
- for it.

- Reading through an ancient issue of the Transactor, I found an assembler for
- PET machines sporting 65C02 processors, along with an opcodes list. This got
- me thinking, couldn't the 128's architecture support a 65C02 as well? I
- seriously doubt that it is a pin-for-pin replacement for the 8502, what I
- envision would be a daughterboard which could plug in to the 8502 socket,
- containing two sockets: one for the chip, the other directing= the pins to the
- correct pins. This would be a worthwhile upgrade for the enhanced instruction
- to splice the VIC-II's 4 MHz clock, intended to drive the Z-80
- (located at pin 25 I believe) to the 65C02 as well, and double your speed? (In
- case you're wondering why Commodore wouldn't have done this in the first
- place, if it IS possible, is because they manufacture the 6510 and 8502, but
- the 65C02 is manufactured by another company, or possibly more than one
- besides Rockwell). Incidentally, this is the same chip used in the Apple IIc.
- Also, does anyone know of a good source for 65C02s? The reason I ask all this
- is because my knowledge of electronics is limited to what I have to know to
- program in machine language, and I'd rather not experiment on my own machine
- if I'm not sure what the results would be. Any thoughts?

- As far as I am aware, such a hack wouldn't work. A few years back I attended a
- conference on Q-Link with Fred Bowen, one of the 128 designers. At the time
- Commodore was still making noises about a 64GS, sporting better graphics, more
- memory, and a significantly faster CPU. The CPU in question was a new 6502
- developed by Commodore's own MOS technology group, dubbed the 65CE02. It was
- somewhere in the 4 mhz to 8 mhz range I recall.
-
- Anyway, I asked Mr. Bowen if it would be possible to purchase one of these
- 65CE02 chips and substitute it for the 8502 in my 128. His answer was an
- unequivocal 'No,' the reasoning being that although the chips could be hacked
- onto the motherboard in a manner similar to what R.Farquar has suggested, the
- timing of the CIA chips and the various clocks, interrupts, etc. would be
- completely out of whack with the new CPU's timing.
-
- If one were able to come up with new I/O chip replacements, a new VIC-II chip
- etc. then such a hack might be possible. Since Commodore canned the 64GS
- project, the availablility of said chips is nil. Sorry to be the proverbial
- rain on the parade, but a 65c02 is a no-go.
-
- Your best bet is to keep your fingers crossed and hope JBEE and company are
- successful in financing and developing the 128 ZIP Chip, which would address
- such shortcomings, and be much faster than a 4 mhz 65c02 as well!
-
- P.S. I could be entirely wrong on this, so don't take my words as gospel, most
- 128 innovations have been the result of somebody ignoring the naysayers and
- making the impossible happen.

- The 256K works with Bank 2 and Bank 3! There was no hardware (mmu) provision
- for the additional dram but the C-128 operating system supports it :)
- What you do in this upgrade is provide your C-128 with another MMU (8722) and
- dram and the register bits to support it.
-
-
- As for working with Geos, it works with all C-128 software. Your C-128
- and the software that runs on it won't know it is expanded UNTIL you use the
- Bank commands or try moving software into the other banks. If you modify
- Geos to use the expanded memory there is no reason why it shouldn't work.
- As stated in the article it is not as fast as DMA, but it is a lot faster

- You can load and run programs in the last 256K, throw a switch, then reset

- Pardon me for joining this topic so late...
-
- I have been giving the idea some thought for quite a while now and it is
- possible to add a 65C02 to a C-64/C-128 using a daughterboard. Of course
- there a number of technical issues which need to be addressed:
-
- 1) The clock speed of the C-64/C-128 cannot be changed. As someone pointed
- out earlier, the memory and I/O chips are all geared for the computer's
- current clock speed. However, this does not rule out adding a 65C02.
- None of the clocks are generated by the processor, and since a 6510, 8502,
- and 65C02 all use the same timing core (the basic 6502), the 65C02 could
- work in C-64/C-128 at the existing clock speed.
-
- 2) Since the 6510 and 8502 have I/O ports, which a 65C02 does not, they will
- need to be recreated on the daughterboard. This should not proove too
- difficult since the I/O port is simple and can built from standard TTL
- chips or possibly a PAL (Programmable Logic Array).
-
- 3) The 65C02 will not recognize any of the old 6502 pseudo-opcodes. Although
- they were listed as unused, quite a few commercial software packages made
- use of them. In the 65C02, these unused opcodes are assigned new commands
- or became NOPs (No OPeration). This would cause many popular programs to
- crash and die, so we would need to have a way to switch between the 65C02
- and the 6510/8502. But like the I/O ports, this should not proove too
- difficult.
-
- Of course, if we are going to up grade the processor in this fashion, why stop
- with a 65C02? Why not add a Western Design Center's 65802, which is a 16-bit
- processor that is pin-compatible with a 6502 and works with a greatly expanded
- opcode set. There is even a provision to place to 65802 in a 65C02 emulation
- mode so that it will "become" a 65C02 (much like the C-128 can "become" a C-
- 64).
-
- Any thoughts or suggestions?

- Once you have found the traces that are bad just wire wrap them (run a lead)

- The DIP sockets (Dual Inline Packages - two rows of single sockets)
- are what you need. I believe the solder tails are something different. I
- believe they have open ends on the legs where you insert a wire and
- then flow solder into the hole in the leg to hold the wire in place.
- Not sure though. Call them and ask for dip sockets. I know they carry them
- since I bought a whole slew of different ones before. They are 12 for
- a dollar or something like that! Very inexpensive. While you are at it I
- would suggest installing a 24 pin (?) socket in the REU in case you decide
- to add an eprom later.

- Eraseable/Programmable Read Only Memory = EPROM
- It is a chip that comes with a software program installed on it.
- There are a lot of new software packages coming out for the C-128 and

- Looking through the catalogs I have (JDR included) I've come to the

- The paper should be put on the bottom of the REU board and then inserted into

- I would suggest running the REU by itself using a memory test program to

- Without the expander cable and with the REU plugged directly into the
- computer
- try running the Maverick REU quick test if you have it to see which chip
- is testing bad.
-
- Then replace it.
-
- If the chip still tests bad then look carefully at the board and look for
- either lifted/ripped board traces or an incomplete solder connection.
-
- If you have either of the two above problems you can make a lot of chips
- look bad when in fact it is only one chip.

- Yes, as Howie says, I do have a 1.5 Meg REU and it seems to have been running

-
- There are files in the Geos library about expanding a REU to 1 meg and

- I would say, though, that the 128K-512K upgrade is worth it, since (1) it's
- not too very expensive, and (2) it's not as difficult, and safer. If you use
- sockets, you don't have to worry about burning out the RAM chips while
- soldering, you just need to worry about nuking the circuit board.
-
- A 128K REU has limited usefulness (says the GEOS user), while a 512K, though
- not as generally useful and applicable as a RAMLink, is quite useful. In
- fact, I think most of the programs I use regularly use the 512K REU
- effectively - GEOS, Dialogue128, BBR, ZED, CS-DOS, KeyDOS (with RAMDOS),
- Pocket Writer 2.... Now, I have a 1.5 Meg REU, and the only ones on that list
- that actually use more than 512K of it are GEOS, ZED, and KeyDOS (with
- RAMDOS). I would agree with JBEE that the 1 Meg expansion is probably of
- limited utility, and probably not worth the risks/costs nowadays. But I do
- think its well worth expanding your 1700 to 512K.

- Big Bopper,
-
- You *CAN* run all of the Basic8 programs here. All you need is the Basic8
- runtime library file. I'm not sure of its name, but it should be something
- like ~Basic8 Runtime'.
-
- This Runtime gets booted, and then any Basic8 application can be loaded and
- will run.
-
- The only difference between using the ~Runtime' and the Basic8 program to run
- applications, is that with Runtime you cannot access and change program code.
- It is made invisible. With the Basic8 program running applications, if there
- is something you want to change, the code is there, and can be fixed up on the
- spot.
-
- Any Basic8 application that requires the 64k vdc to run will say so in its
- file description. It won't run without it.
-
- Oh! Be sure to do a search for I think it is ~gorilla'. Part of an sfx, or
- sda. Actually a demo of 3 graphics.
-
- Ooops.. I just remembered! The ~gorilla' package goes one step further than
- Basic8. It and the other two are graphics done with the IPaint program, which
- was written with Basic8, and uses an interlace screen.
-
- The sfx contains IVS, an IPaint viewer program. This will use a most if not
- all of the 64k. It changes my 1902A into a vga screen. :)

- Monitor choices:
- multiscan or multisync monitors from NEC are real good. Might be a good idea
- to get one that supports both RGBI, RGBA, and if you have the choice
- composite. That is the "ideal" choice if you have about $500 :D
-
- Normal choices:
- A used 1080, 1902 (not a 1902a!,Thompson, or Magnavox) or a new 1084 S
- monitor would get nice. A used 1080,1902 are about $125 and a new 1084S

- You can also buy brand new RGBI IBM "only" monitors for CGA 80 column screens

- The other day I was reading messages on a local i-net. I was reading the amiga
- messages to see what was happening when I came upon a thread for high density
- drives for amigas. The general gist was that there none and someone mentioned
- that the c64/128 would have one before the amiga. It is due to be released in
- october and would be undergoing beta testing in two weeks. Unfortunately he
- could not disclose anymore as he was under a disclosure agreement. Sounds

-
- While all too true, for those of us who would rather stick with thier

- are late than to never have been developed at all! Does make me wonder

- As someone pointed out to me (which I already knew) in email, the extra
- high density disk drives and disks were not even available a few years
- ago. Heck, IBM PCs don't even come with them. This is hitech cutting
- edge material. Ask yourself what is the standard drive for a PC and Mac?
- 720k or 1.44 meg and for the 68000 machines 720k.
- Over in the UK and Europe people are just getting into the 3.5 drives
- and there are software houses thinking about supporting the format. With
- the availablity of a FD-2000 or FD-4000 that can also read 720K disks,
- some of the small houses (like me) will have more than enough reason to
- produce software on 3.5 diskettes, especially some of the high end
- products. I in fact sold commercial software (which RUN never reviewed
- even though I was spending $400-1200 a month in their magazine) on
- 3.5 720K disks and would have been happy to supply it on a 4meg
- disk had it been available. Rather copy one disk than four anytime!
-
- I like the black case, it looks high tech. Also, if they went with a
- special colored case it would probably have added more to the cost of the
- unit and delayed it (sure Doug could comment on that).
-
- I would have liked to have seen REAL timing tests, how it performs with
- stuff like Geos, PCiii, and backup utilities. The stuff we use.
- How much cost per byte vs a 1581? Etc Etc. For a cost close to a HD
- (with four times the capacity) these things need to be addressed.
-
- I was told you can have up to (18) 1541 partitions and you can just MCOPY
- disks right to the partitions. Think this will save time backing up your
- software collection? Maybe get some software to work on the new formats
- that won't work on a 1581 because of track and sector locations?
-
- Etc Etc. Instead of nit picking I would rather see a more in depth view
- of the product instead of rerinting press release sheets.
-
- Not that I think the FD series is a dog, as a matter of fact I want
- one badly :) I just think for the majority of readers, for a $300
- product the cost of a low end XT (I wouldn't want one) a lot was left
- out for the amount of pages taken for the review.

- There are still a few around. The Dr. Evil Labs SwiftLink-232 distributed by
- us (CMD) does this job, but must be used with specific software which is
- included. The advantage of SwiftLink is that it can be used with higher speed
- modems, and can also be used to transfer files directly between Commodore and
- other computer types at speeds up to 38.4K baud. Other devices that are
- available are generally limited to the baud rates that the 128 can produce
- itself, usually maxing out at around 2400 baud (though certain 128 software
- such as DesTerm can push the limit to around 9600 baud - albeit not a very
- true 9600, generally slower). BriWall carries interfaces like this from

- (this is not a product endorsement of Swiftlink but a statement)
- Most if not all of the terminals worth owning support Swiftlink including
- Wizard 64 and Wizard 128.
-
- Since the price difference between a regular cheapo interface and
- SL-232 is only $10-$15 dollars I would just go out and buy the SL-232.
- With 9600 modems so cheap and with GEnie supporting 9600 in a limited

- everywhere.

- Tim,
-
- I believe that any software that allows for user defined printer files, and
- user defined character input, will let you use the color features to some
- degree.
-
- For example with Pocket Writer unused pitches could be redefined for printing
- lines of defined color. Defining characters, and embedding them within text
- ought to allow for character defined colors.
-
- Redefining characters with PW would give 9 possible color codes. You would
- lose the WYSIWYG feature, but considering the pretty output, it might be
- a worthwhile tradeoff.
-
- If you do this with your word processor, be sure to save the re-defining
- as templates, so that it only has to be done once. :)

- You could also save each "command line" as a file and append it into your
- text where you need it.
-
- Example:
- qqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqq (append +red) qqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqq
- qqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqq (append +black) qqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqq
-
- Where +red, +black would contain the line of escape code need to change
- colors.
-
- This is sometimes the best approach with programs such as Paperclip iii
- because some commands will not fit within the six-eight digits assigned
- for printer commands.

- Just bought a Epson ActionPrinter 5000 (LQ-570 equivalent), a fast 24- pin
- printer, for $211.
- So far it is compatible with everything, and can use existing Epson 9-pin
- printer drivers without modification most of the time, including fully
- compatible 9-pin graphics modes.
- Also has special features: true 360*360 graphics, 11 LQ fonts (two are
- scalable like a laser printers), and very nice, dark print quality, even on
- graphics.
- Probably the most exceptional thing, though, is the paper handling
- capability. It's internal tractor feed can operate as a push or a pull
- tractor, and it can paper park, and feed from the back, bottom, or front.
- Single sheets can be fed from the top or front, and you can buy single or
- double bin sheet feeders if you want that capability.
- All in all, I couldn't be more pleased with this printer. I have no
- complaints...well, only one real complaint...they never include character
- width tables with printers anymore! I have completed a working PaperClip III
- driver that can do proportionality, but without the printer width tables

- You could get widths from that (a pain, though). They did that in the manual
- for my old (semi-retired) Gemini-10X, and I believe in the star NX-10 too...
-
- Also, you could get "cheap" character widths by printing out 80 of each
- character on a line and measuring... by printing lots, you reduce the effect
- that slight measurement errors have on your final calculated width.
-
- Or, you could wait for the character width tables to come in the mail ;)
