- I found an old serial printer interface that is called "Data 20" from Data
- Corp. in So. Cal. In it's small manual it states that it is also used for
- interfacing non-commodore modems up to 2400 baud. Sure enough it does co-
- nnect up to both the user port AND the Supra 2400. But I guess I need some
- help in getting it to work still. As it is, no communication passes beyond the
- modem with any term s/w I have tried so far. Some defaults seem to have been
- set up on the modems 'non-volatile' RAM: 'HS' and 'AA' (-auto answer) are lit
- on power-up. Any ideas? Someone suggested I use Desterm for toggling some
- feature.*s

- Well, the 'HS' being on means the modem is set to communicate at 2400 baud
- but I'm not sure how to turn off Auto-Answer other than through the software.
- You might try sending the modem AT&F which should write the factory
- default settings to the non-volatile ram and se if that turns off Auto-
- Answer.

- I think the main point of your message was that the modem is not receiving
- ANY commands from the computer, correct?
-
- Is so, I would like to point out generally any interface on the user port

- I have never heard of a "Data 20". However, if it is like any of the other
- dual purpose interfaces I've seen it will have either dip switches, or more
- likely, jumper switches internally that allow the user to switch its
- functions, between those of acting as a printer interface, and as one for a
- modem.
-
- Ostensibly, the jumpers will reverse many of the line input/output directions
- of various functions, affecting pins 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 12, 20 and 22.
-
- Follow your manual's instructions to set these jumpers (or dip switches) to
- their modem settings, and any Terinal program will then be able to
- communicate with your modem quite nicely.

- My 1571 started giving me extreme probems. I had problems with it
- several years previously, and it cost $150+ to get a new mechanism
- for it, so when things happened again, I feared the worst, and started
- asking for solutions from users on GEnie. In the end, I had to go out
- and buy another 1571 from a local user because we had a critical need
- for programs on my 5.25 disks. After I had a backup, I got bold. I
- disassembled the drive to see if I could see anything loose, etc. I'm
- not a tech, so it was pretty much just poking and pecking around inside
- the drive. However, I got even bolder, and totally disassembled the
- r/w head assembly.... removed the top head from the assembly. I got
- some alcohol, and with my finger, rubbed the read/write surface of both
- heads vigorously, then reassembled. During reassembly, I was kind of
- concerned that the fit was not what I considered a precision fit... it
- seemed there was 'slop', and alignment was a concern, but I put it all
- back together anyway. I reasoned that it did not work anyway, so what
- did I have to lose. In the end, it worked, and has worked ever since.
- I'm kind of more pleased with this because I have never been too
- comfortable with those abrasive cleaner disks anyway.... but in the end,
- it was the fact that I was going to have to get service or trash the
- drive that made me bold enough to go in and do what I did, and it did
- the trick. It may not be the same as the problem you are having. Mine
- just would not read the back side of the disk. But if the drive is not
- working, when you get to the point that you are ready to pay someone to
- fix it, or to toss it, you might want to consider this. Even now I find
- it hard to believe that it worked, but the drive is still chugging and
- that was over a year ago.

- Tony,
-
- The Aprospand should do it. It has on/off switches for each cartridge which
- controls a couple (more?) lines and lets the user switch a unit in and out.
-
- It is far better, however, to begin with compatible cartridges, so that they
- can co-habitate in harmony in an Aprospand, without the need to switch
- switches.
-
- I do not believe that Aprospands are hard to find, and they should be readilly
- available. Certainly QBB will have them in stock.
-
- One other suggestion: With the Aprospand you may want to have a REU
- positioned elsewhere. To do this, expander cables fron Tenex will work
- nicely. Be sure to get only the cables that Tenex sells since these are the
- only ones that a user can shorten, if need be.
-
- Finally, you can safely disregard any warnings in the Tenex catalog that their
- expander cables are not for use with a REU. I have used them with two
- different 128's quite nicely.

- This sounds a lot like a noisy phone line. Maybe your phone company
- upgraded their equipment in the 6 week interim. Another thing that
- might have caused that, tho I doubt it would be at 1200 baud, would

- The 1670 may not handle that without a delay between each of the

- Notice the delay after opening the channel to the modem, and then

- If air is blowing OUT, in has to come in from somewhere. I personnally see no

- You just have to cut a trace on it. I would have to see one to know were. But
- I think it's right by were you plug it in. It's so the REC chip will know if
- if has 1 by 64k chips or 1 by 256k chips. Cut is for 1 by 256k chips to be
- 256k or 512k or even up to 2 megs.

- On the REU boards there are two places that can be cut. The 128/512K
- jumper near the edge connector or the trace on the back of the board.
- The one on the back is easy to find, it says "cut 512k"
- If you need any more help let us know.

- This was one of those Assembly Language books that I threw in the corner of my
- room because it was too advanced for the beginner and I hadn't even begun!!
- Now that I have had a good amount of experience in ML programming on the C-64,
- I opened it up and started playing around with it again. I never knew that
- the C-64's Joystick Ports could be used for OUTPUT!! I remained skeptical as
- a hooked up the simple sample circuit and freaked out when I ran the driver
- code and the LEDs flashed!! One example read Port 1 and ran the lights off
- Port 2. Another one just flashed the LEDs. According to the text, 5V mini-
- relays can be substituted for the LEDs to control motors, lights, or anything
- else you can think of! I never knew it was that simple to control external
- devices with my C-64! I always thought that you needed a complex interface
- and evn more complex code to run it! In the simplest circuit, you can hook
- four LEDs directly to the I/O lines on the port and it works fine!! Has
- anyone else played with this idea of external control? I know that Atari 400
- and 800 computers had several devices designed for them that were completely
- controlled by their Joystick Ports. In fact, I have an Eprom programmer for
- an Atari 800 that uses all 4 joystick ports to communicate with the computer!!

- The Covox Voice Master uses the joy port for high speed I/O too. I was able
- to read and write at about 22K baud without any kind of CRC checking. The joy
- and cassette ports have a lot of posibilities for high speed I/O and are often

- Do you know of any hardware hacker books that deal with the subject of high-
- speed I/O by way of joystick or cassette ports?
-
- For a few years in Arizona the phone company zoned different areas so that it
- would cost long distance to call across cities. One rebel SysOp built an
- interface using the cassette and joystick port of a VIC-20 to act as a
- controller for his C-64 based BBS. The system (called Switchbaud) allowed a
- caller to choose a BBS from a list and then connect the caller across his
- second line so that the long-distance charges were defeated if calling across
- cities. nce the phone-company did away with the charges, his board
- disappeared. I wish I could have asked him how his interface worked!
-
- Just out of curiosity, do you think it would be possible to control an IBM-
- style hard-drive controller through the cassette or joystick ports? That
- project in the download base for the C-64 hard drive interface wedges the
- controller into cartridge memory, but that will take a long time to write an
- operating system that is both memory-conservative and operational!
-
- This may be a little crazy, but do you think it may be possible to use one C-
- 64 as a hard-drive controller for that project and then connect it to a second
- C-64 which can use the first C-64 as a serial-device to control the hard
- drive? I have a few extra C-64s laying around that I could butcher. I wonder
- if I could write a program that will mimic the floppy serial bus on the C-64.
- Then I could just jam the C-64's motherboard into an XT case with the hard
- drive and have the hard-drive DOS in the C-64 with an EPROM.
-
- Looks like I'm kind-of getting off the subject, but one last thing: I have an
- EPROM programmer for my Atari 800, but I think the Atari is a pain in the butt
- to use. Do you know where I can get one for the C-64 or 128?
-
- Thanks- Derek

- DS,

- I haven't any articles on high speed joy stick I/O. I was able to figure out
- how by using a monitor to look at what Covox did in their Voice Master
- software. If you have a book like Mapping The 64 it will give you detailed
- CIA programming info. The have the first Mapping the 64 which had a few
- errors in the CIA section, but I was able to figure it out...
