- Sounds to me like a job for a compression program like "CKIT 94"
- from Mad Man software. You are asking for about 22% compression
- and thats about the best I have ever done with a text file.
- Some program files don't compress as well. One thing to keep in
- mind though, you will have to decompress the program if you want
- to use it, then you are back to where you started. You could
- invest in one of CMD's products like the FD2000 1.6 Mb disk drive
- whith which I doubt very much you could find a single program
- that would exceed it's capacity. I have been using one for about
- year now without one single problem. You can contact CMD through
- this BBS.

-
- I don't know. Sounds a lot of work just to move one file. I rather get a
- program that can transfer my file.
-
- By the way, I do have an FD2000 drive (that was where that big file was saved
- to) but the programs that came with it all seemed to support a dual drive
- system (unless I'm wrong).
-
- By the way, this file was a mail packet so I decided to extract a "pointer
- reset" file from the packet and upload that file to the BBS and when done, I
- went to the message area of the BBS and read some messages before downloading
- my mail packet again (enough space this time<G>).

- For example, if the fle is 1!Wargame, 2!Wargame...etc, just enter the

- BigMac,
-
- This is an interesting thread. :)
-
- Two things to watch for:
-
- (1) Only use the CBM file unzipper version that is appropriate for the
- set of zipped files you have. Generally one version of unzip will not
- work on files zipped with an other version. One clue is that later
- versions of zipped files used different namng standards.
-
- (2) If you are attempting to unzip CBM zipped files, do not use the
- CBM UNZIP that is intended to unzip ms-dos type *.zip files.
-
- All this may seem obvious, but thought I'd mention it anyway.

- I believe unzip requires 4 files on disk: 1!filename, 2!filename, 3!filename,

- looking for file #2. I have used zipcode extensively, if things are not right

- files to date that I could not unzip. Keep trying! :) Tom

- Most likely the file was compressed in PKzip2.04g. As Outlaw said earlier
- Unzip 128 (in that NZP archive) only handles files that were compressed in
- PKzip1.xx.
-
- What you would have to do is either see if there's a PKZip 1.xx-compressed
- counterpart to "HOUBBS09.ZIP" or ask someone from the BBS RT if it would be
- possible to make a PKZip 1.xx version of the file.

- Doug,
-
- The Browser.SFX file does break down to the 2 smaller files you
- described. In the main screen (top box) will give you a list of your
- drives on the serial bus and the bottom window will give you 3 options.
-
- Back to the top box - The 1st drive (8) should have a highlight bar on it.
- To move this highlight bar, press your cursur down key and select the drive
- you wish and press return.
-
- You will then get a list of files from the drive you selected and the first
- file will be highlighted. Again, user your cursur key to move the highlight
- bar to the desired file and press return.
-
- Now that you have selected a file and pressed return, look in the lower box.
- You will see a new set of options: <- (A)scii (P)etascii Return
- You will note the (P) will be highlighted. This is just a default, press A
- if the file you selected is in ASCII.
-
- To back out of each menu press the <- key in the upper left corner of the
- keyboard at any time.

- is a different approach altogether.
-
- BTW, on the topic of his Read Me file, he apologised to all those who DO
- support shareware in the Fido echos.. at the time, it was in response to a
- person who had told him to well (it's unrepeatable..) when the user had been
- GIVEN -- FREE -- a registration. Yes, the user sent in a registration (after 3
- wrong attempts), but sent in a US Money order when the docs clearly state that
- these are uncashable in Australia. IOW, the user "paid", but Rod will never
- see any money from it, and gave the guy his codes anyway.
- And then got told publically where to... <sigh>.
-
- So that's the background story to the read me file. Actually, I've forwarded
- the # of GEnie downloads of Browser, and both Rod and I are very amazed at the
- numbers. He really did intend for this small program to be of interest to only
- a few and has been very surprised at thethe number of people checking it out.

- I've forwarded your message to the author. He has a Ramlink, and in fact, the
- program was developed using the Ramlink, so I doubt that's the problem. BTW,
- when I quoted what appeared on your screen, there's an extra 1571 up there

- GG> 9 1571 1571
- ^^^^^^^^^^ This don't look right. :-(
-

-
- Should be CMD FD and CMD HD
-
- GG> 80 col with drives numbered 8,9,11,12,13,Ramlink#21. 11 is a 1581.
-
- I've no explanation for it to not recognise the 1581... ask if it has
- JiffyDos. (It shouldn't make a difference though).
-
- The Ramlink at #21 will NOT be recognised.. It only does a drive scan from 8-
- 16 inclusive.
-
- Suggest that he turn his 1581 drive off and see what happens.. there is
- obviously something amiss here and it may be the cause of all his other
- problems.
-

-

-
- I don't *think* I've trapped for this at this stage, also the location I'm

-
- When I put together my user group's disk I added Browser. Rod wants the Read
- Me in there too, though. Not sure how I feel about that at the moment, but I
- included it on the disk when I put it together. I also added a "messages.dat"
- file (actually I used QWKRR's "small.dat" feature to gather a few sample
- messages) of CBM interest messages. I also included some of the test ANSI
- screens Rod and I were using to test Browser with. That way it gave people
- something to see and read when they ran the program.

-
- Er, If you check out Cat 8, Topic 34, you will see a full explanation of how I
- went about doing this. NO, there is no mail door on GEnie and in the future
- I'll not add a bragline to my messages so people won't get the wrong idea.

- Well. I did all of the above. 1. Downloaded a good download. 2.Copied over to
- a new formatted disk and disolved the SFX file. 3.Ran it and got the same
- indications.
- 8 1571
- 9 1571 (prior double 1571 in this line was a mistype)
- 12 CMD FD
- 13 CMD HD
- SOLID REctangular bar here, 1 cursor high and about 10 col wide.
-
- Two boxes as described before and nothing. Tried options as Gayle suggested
- but nothing. No WNST etc.
-
- Breakthrough of sorts. Took the disk to my other 128 w/1571 & monitor and
- thats all. No jiffydos or anything. Program loaded and showed
- 8 1571 underneath the cursor bar and options and text in the lower
- box. Options worked, TSNW and file loaded. Then this 128 crashed and I am
- unable to get it to load even a directory. Disk directory loads ok on my
- origional machine but the program again acts as described above.
-
- My main machine has the following aboard. modem, RamLink w/4meg ram 1750 REU
- plugged in, 8=1571,9=1571,11=1581,12=FD4000,13=HD-40, 1084S monitor,
- Supergraphics gold interface connected to a Citizen GSX140 24pin printer, Oh
- yes, computeris C128 w/64k video daughter board.
-
- Computer also had AntiGrav Toolkit chip installed in the empty socket inside.
- I mean it HAS Toolkit installed.
-
-
- I think my download and disolving are OK based on what I saw on my other
- machine before it crashed. Therefore is must be something in my main system.
- I will try this program on my C128 in the office which has same config minus
- CMD devices. It does have Jiff yDos as does my main machine at home.
-
- Rod, Gaelyne, Outlaw,C128 Eddie and CBM MARK, Thanks for all your help.

- I tried BROWSER on my 128 in the office with 2 1571s and it worked just like
- advertised. Therefore, it must be my main system at home which is described
- in an earlier message. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance. Doug Parsons

- Doug,
-
- I'd suspect the Super Graphic interface as the cause of the prob.
-
- Isn't there 'something" you can send to the Super Graphic ahead of time, in
- Basic, that avoids this sorta prob?
-
- I seem to recall that it is something like an exclamation, "!", or some such.
- I cannot recall the specifics right now, but have some notes on this
- somewhere.

-
- Howie,
-
- I believe the following line will help with the problem.
- This command should be sent after pressing RESET & CLEAR buttons at the same
- time on the SGG Interface:
-
- open15,4,15:print#15,"sl":close15
-
- I don't believe it is the interface alone that is causing the problem (as
- Browser works fine on my system which is 2 1581's with the SGG) but
- the combination of the 1571's and the SGG.
-
- This should make it work fine.

- Doug,
-
- I forwarded your comments once again, and wanted to thank you for all your
- efforts in detailing your equipment and trying it on different systems. Any
- idea what went wrong with your second system?
-
- BTW, just wondering... do you have your Ramlink set to #21 for a reason? I'm
- curious.
-
- Below is Rod's reply....

- printer, Oh yes, computeris C128 w/64k video daughter board.
-
- Hmm, what happened to his ramlink at #21 ??????
-
- I'm concerned about his 1581 not being recognised.. I still suggest he
- disconnebt it to see what happens.

-
- Or more likely *his* 1581 and SGG.

- gaelyne,
- i'm completely puzzled. i got your message and i must thank you a lot for
- all the help you have given. i know it's a bother but i sure appreciate you
- getting with rod down under and i know this is cutting into his time. anyway,
- i have my second system into the shop for checkout.
-
- i did find out why my 1581 wasn't recognized. it was plugged in so the
- lite came on in front but the cables connecting it to the other drives wern't
- plugged in so it was not in the loop as it should have been. (dumb me!) it is
- now in series with the 1571's and fd & hd drives. (i still have my ramlink #21
- connected. i just forgot to add it to the listing in msg #18. sorry for the
- confusion.)
- after i connected my 1581 and neated up the cables behind my desk i ran
- browser again with the same results: i..
- 8 1571
- 9 1571
- 11 1581
- 12 cmd fd
- 13 cmd hd
- solid rectangular bar here (1 cursor high and approx 10 col wide)
- two boxes as described before and locked up keyboard. when i use jiffydos
- commands <ctrl d> to toggle between drives i get:
- 8
- 9
- 11
- 12
- 13
- 14 (i'm not sure but i think this is super graphics gold interface)
- 21 jiffydos is the reason i have ramlink set to device 21. when i type in
-
- @# to set drive it is easier to type 21 than 15 as the #21 keys are right
- next to each other and the 15 keys are a stretch. maybe not a good reason but
- seemed good at the time. i'm open to suggestions for change but would have to
- be good as i have a lot of stuff programmed to find drive 21 now and it would
- have to all be changed. i have the ezloader program from c64 alive, vol 3,
- issue 4 installed in ramlink;part 1 to autoboot on powerup. i have a lot of
- programs on ramlink that this program goes out to find and load and i want to
- put browser on it also as from what i have seen on my other systems it is a
- great program and very useful.
-
- with ezloader autobooting i don't know how to type in the command
- e.bourdon1 sent me to shut off my ssg interface. i'll try to do that from
- basic next and see what happens.
- hopefully we'll get this solved shortly so i can put this out to my club.
- could rod take some programs in trade instead of money as it seems to be
- difficult to send money down there? a bank transfer takes $10 to $15 to change
- american dollars into australian currency. however, a program ore something
- could be shipped without exchanges. thanks for all your help gaelyne, and
- e.bourbon1. doug
