-
- Apparently LDS has given the green light to freely distribute the CP/M version
- of PAF, since I just received a copy on a floppy, from a friend.
-
- The four disks came packaged as four LIBraried files on the one 3 1/2" disk.
-
- I haven't had the chance to get things up and running yet on my C128. And,
- complicating matters, I know *NOTHING* about geneology. However, I *DO*
- intend to learn...
-
- I'd like to upload this program (800k in LBR files, so I quess 1.4 Megs or so
- once delibraried and uncrunched.)
-
- Could someone who lives in/near SLC contact the powers that be at LDS, and
- confirm that it is okey to have the program here?
-
- It appears that PAF will be able to run from the 1581 disk. (GEDCOM and its
- related files won't fit, so they'll have to be on a seperate disks.) Thanks to
- my newly found info on geneology, I *KNOW* what GEDCOM is for, and what it
- does, and that it is needed only rarely.
-
- Since it appears that PAF will be doing a lot of disk accessing, it seems best
- to have it run from the REU, but there may just not be enough ram in there to
- fit everything. It's no prob to change the REU into an A or B drive, but
- getting more than 500k into it has me stumped for now...
-
- Howie
-
- P.S. This is all so new to me, I don't even know how to spell genealogy
- correctly. :/
-
- PP.S. For those who were asking about using overlay files as a means to
- overcome the 64k memory limit, well PAF's One plus Meg of programs that run in
- less than CP/M's 64k is one example. :)

- Sounds like a heck of a program! If you can upload it I would say to .ark

- As soon as you find out if it's OK to upload could you let us know when you
- do it? The PAF is one program I'ld like to take a look at. Been doing my
- family ancestry for the past few years off & on. I'm now using GEOfile for
- my family groups but I think PAF would be far more versatile. Hopefully it
- won't take too much to confiqure for the 128, don't know a whole lot
- about cp/m.
- I take it you'll upload this to the CP/M Roundtable libraries if you get
- the OK?

- JBEE,
-
- LIBraried files seems to have evolved into a sort of standard recently. At
- least most everything I've downloaded seems to be in that form.
-
- The members (files) of the library are all crunched. I don't know however if
- crunching shrinks them better than arcing, however. Several utilites will do
- the delibrarying and uncrunching at one time, so for the user it's as easy one
- way or the other.
-
- The reason that PAF is in four librarys is that the original program came
- grouped on 4 disk, each for seperate functions. I still don't know how
- necessary documentation may be. However, I've been told that the dos version
- runs pretty much like the CP/M one, and that can be purchased, along with a
- printed Manual.
-
- Well, let's see if LDS will allow these to get uploaded...
-
- -----
-
- Mark,
-
- I'm still trying to find out who and where to write to at LDS to get their
- permission to upload PFS. If anyone might know, please let me know.
-
- Actually, now that you mention it, the CP/M RoundTable Library might be the
- place for these files. I'll let JBEE or Bill decide this one. :)
-
- Since I am not sure how long the delay might be, and since LDS is allowing PFS
- (CP/M version only) to be distributed, so long as it is done on a free (no-
- profit) basis, I'll send a disk to you now.
-
- Send me a pre-formatted floppy (cbm CP/M), along with a mailer with return
- postage. Also, include a note reminding me why. :)

- My understanding is that VizaStar uses some form of very simple compression
- technique for some disk file information, however this may be defeated by
- using the Print To Run option (a .PRT disk file), then filtering the CBM ASCII
- files to ASCII, if needed. Null- modeming to another computer at 38.4K using
- a SwiftLink-232, or using a 1571 will take care of our end. I'm not a 1-2-3
- fan, though so how to import the data (without formulas) is out of my area.
-
- See the VZA* manual, pages 8-6 and 9-7 for the gory details, or let me know
- and I can copy those pages for you Kent, and fax 'em along.
-
- I don't have Lotus 1-2-3, but did translate one file for a friend last year
- from VZA* to Excel (raw data only, no formulas). It was a while back, so I'd
- have to play around with it again to make sure this is 100% correct.

- Wouldn't Viza and Lotus allow import/export of either DIF or SYLK formatted

-
- [Or, JBEE's sugestion of using <CR>'s to delimit should make it transportable,

-
- You might still have a few global find-and-replaces to do if formulas do not

- I don't have RamLink or any of these gadgets to autoexec a program on

-
- D.Smith244,
-
- Well, yes. In order to use the REU, files must first be written over into it
- first. Depending upon how this is done, it may not be too fast.
-
- Two suggrestions off the top of my head: [1] Install CMD's JiffyDos which
- will speed up the process, or [2] always keep the REU powered, so whatever is
- in there is always instantly available. RAMLink will do this. It always
- keeps power on to BOTH its own ram and the REU ram.
-
- It is true however, that when different programs access the REU in
- different ways, the most recent tends to wipe out the earlier memory. An
- exception to this is REU memeory management, which CS/DOS allows. I am
- able to use the REU with BOTH CS/DOS and Pocket's AWriter3, Filer2, and
- Planner2. Not without some care however, else one WILL over-write the
- other.
-
- Since I've gotten RAMLink, however, trading uses of the REU is no longer a
- prob. Permanent storage of data files is on RL's ram, and this writes
- things over into the REU super-fast, and very quietly. :)
-
- Howie
-
- P.S. As to having an autoexec. Every 128 will autoboot, and using this
- feature with Basic you can perform just about any task, unattended. I do this
- all the time to run thru my RAMLink and copy over to disk close to 800k of
- constantly changing data files. Having back-ups without me here to do them is
- nice.

- By far the system with the best REU support is GEOS, but I have always been

- This should be possible from an autoexec file. Well, lo and behold, I read in

- If you buy the Redstorm disk from Joe Buckley it comes with a utility to load
- and save the REU contents as one big file!
- You can stuff your REU full with Joe's program before you finish copying
- five files the other way. Not to mention there is a certain appeal to saving
- the reu contains completely as one disk file, it lets you load different
- enviroments depending on what you want to do (Ex. geoPublish vs geoWrite)

- Zappo,
-
- If you're running GEOS in 128 mode, you may want to hold off on that for a day
- or two...
-
- I'm trying to get together (read: write a mini-doc file) for two tiny Basic
- routines that make image files of the REU.
-
- They work with CP/M and CS/DOS. I tried Basic8, but B8 always seems to want
- to fill up the REU, no matter what, so here it makes no difference.
-
- It might be interesting to see if it works for GEOS. If it does, and I think
- I have this right, then an RBOOT should have GEOS up and running. JBEE knows
- more bout boot. It does not have any burst loading routines, however.
-
