- I wonder if anyone can 'hep me with a monitor problems/question ...
-
- I have a 1702 monitor with the 3 jack input in back. When a program displays
- a vertical line (like a white line on a dark blue background) there is little
- bleed over to the right of the line -- like a faint shadow. Even when I boot
- up, the black screen blurs into the green just a little on the right side, and
- the left green border smears (just a little) onto the black screen.
-
- OK -- I admit I had modified the monitor by sodering in an add on card that
- gave it 80 column capability. I did not like the quality of the 40 column
- screen from the front monitor jacks, so I removed the add on. At first I
- figured that the smearing was due to my messing with the monitor, and I tried
- everything I could (short of tampering with the convergence rings) to adjust
- the monitor. No luck.
-
- THEN I hooked the 128 up to the TV to see if it showed the same problem -- it
- did. I then double checked the monitor by hooking up my old brown C64 and the
- screen looked great -- no rightward smear at all.
-
- This is a minor problem because the blurring is not too noticable, but since
- the C128 is the source, I'm wondering what I could do to fix this problem. I
- have the original 8K video ram with Jiffy DOS installed. Would swapping out
- the video chip be advisable -- or do (perhaps) all 128's have this
- characteristic?
-
- Any advice/suggestions would be appreciated.
-
- -- Mark C.
-
- PS -- If anyone wants an 80 column adpater card, I know where you can get one
- cheap!

- Supposely the C-128s were made with inferior video (reduced signal) to
- meet FCC guidelines. I don't know how true this is, but from all the
- artists (C64) I know, they were disappointed in how the video from the
- C-128 looked in both brightness and color. I guess the original C64s

-
- Since I used the same cable for both the C64 and the C128, I think that the
- problem must be in the computer and not the cable. Maybe I'll just get the

- We are having a problem printing from PaperClip (this is a 12 year old

-
- PaperClip has a menu for selecting its printer file.
-
- Like all programs it is important to select the proper printer file so
- all of its attributes will be accesssible through the program.
-
- Once selected, be sure to save this back as the default, so it will
- auto load the next time PC gets run.
-
- Also, it is important to specify to PC that you want either ascii or
- petascii output, whichever one your printer/interface is expecting.
-
- If we can help with anything else, let us know.

- You can always compress the files on the C-128 with CS-DOS/LHA, use
- email (page 200) to xmodem them to your account, download them on your IBM,
- and decompress with on the IBM.
-
- All you have to do is figure out if the cost of purchasing BBR128
- will exceed the cost of e-mailing (xmodem) the files to yourself. Which
- is unlikely since at 2400 baud you can transfer at least 3160 CBM BLKs
- of compressed files.
-
- You can also use CP/M to read and write to IBM disks but that is for the
- CP/M topic in Cat #3!

- Hmm, I fear that most people around here won't know a whole lot about Common

-
- From what I've picked up (never tried it myself, being a 128 owner), Common
- Sense is a buggy sort of program whose best use is in downloading a terminal
- program that will serve you better. In the libraries here you can find
- Wizard64, NovaTerm, and BellTerm, all of which are good C64 terminals that
- support some form of buffer operations, a split screen (very handy for things
- like RTC's and chat mode on BBS's), file transfers, etc.
-
- The wealth of alternate (and perhaps more reliable software) available is the
- reason why Common Sense experts are rare :).

- I've used CCGMS many times. It's easy to get ASCII translation. You use the

- Actually I think it's shift F7. The F7 key goes into the autodialer built

- (F8) is what switches the terminal modes from ASCII to Color Graphics. Sorry

- Well....
- There are really two answers to that question. As far as the actual
- download is concerned, the XMODEM protocal as implemented on GEnie uses 128
- bytes per block, or "frame" as they are sometimes called.
- Commodore disk blocks, the units you see when you do a disk directory,, are
- 254 bytes. This is roughly twice the size of the XMODEM blocks, so you can
- approximate that 1 kilobyte = 8 XMODEM blocks or 4 CBM blocks. We generally
- put an addition on the file description, which tells you the size in CBM
- blocks, so you can be sure you have enough room on your disk.

- also, nowadays, more and more pages of each issue are devoted to the "RUN

-
- If you're into GEOS, there's geoWorld, although I don't know if they are still

- group, although I haven't seen an issue of that in my subscription for several
- months; the last issue I got I think was in February, and THAT was last

-
- Is Compute's Gazette still going, does anyone know? I canned it after they
- converted over to the new format of a few tens of pages embedded in a
- tremendous amount of info about plotz MS-DOS computers.
-
- There is Micro-Bytes, but I don't know a whole lot about that one - Paul, you

- And, for those of us who continue to say └boot' while a CP/M disk is in
- unit #8, there are several User Group supported newsletters. One of the
- better ones comes from the Connecticut FOG, and is called └8 Bits and
- Change', and usually has many terrific general tips, as well as those
- specific to the C128.
-
- And, I quess also the many local FOG affiliates. I'm Treasurer of NYOUG,
- which used to be a FOG affiliate, but is now independent. Well, it is
- technicaly an underling of NYACC, and mostly has Osborne users, but we
- also have a steadfast showing of C128 fans. In fact, we use a C128 to
- demo the latest CP/M programs at our meetings.
-
- oh! Did I also mention GEnie support in the FlagShip RoundTable? :)

- Looks like I found a great place for my new hobby. :) I'm glad there are
- still so many sources around for the 8bit CBM machines. I will go and try to
- find RUN, and I'll definately look up Micro Bytes. I saw a COMPUTE! the other
- day, but could not find any CBM info in it. Right now, I'm looking for the
- source that puts out a drive calibration kit for the 1571. The used unit I'm
- buying has a mis-aligned drive.

- The status of both geoJournal and geoWorld is up in the air right now.
-
- Information about TC128 can be found in Cat#16.
-
- RUN magazine is tough to find, usually only sold at a few select stores.
- RUN's # 1-800-343-0728
-
- Concerning the person's comment about new software development.
- There is new software all the time, finding it and information on it is
- the tough part! Also, most of the established software is so good there is
- no need for new software. You would have to go some distance to better
- programs such as Paperclip III, Geos, Fontmaster, the TimeWorks series, etc.
-
- We could use some more good games though :)

- Hey, I'm all for writing a string of shareware games. How do people feel
- about text adventures? Well, language AI is my specialty, so you do what you
- do best, right? Well, back to the topic, I found RUN magazine, and was very
- joyful. For right smack in the middle was an add for the drive calibration kit
- I was looking for. So now I can get my 1571 running. Just in case someone
- else needs this :

- 1541/1571 drive alignment software

- I saw a guy on FIDO yesterday lookin for US distributors for a European
- magazine called C64DriveLight or something like that. Apparently he is the
- U.S. middleman. Couldn't pursue it w/questions cuz it is a commercial
- venture apparently, and that is kind of a no-no out on FIDO. >>sigh<< Whatcha
- think JBEE. Hear any about this?

- Also advertized in RUN, is LOADSTAR,a disk oriented magazine for the 64,
- monthly on two disk, or 128 quarterly.
-
- Personally, I get the 128 issues through our User Group at a
- special rate. I think it was about $25.00 per year.
-
- They offer back issues for $12.00 to $15.00, also they offer back issues
- of a mag. called UPTIME, which I have not tried yet.
-
- I must say I look forward to getting them as there is a good veriaty of
- programs each issue plus ? & A letters and some editorial comments.
-
- I bought my 128 used too so I know how difficult it is to find support.
- Hope this helps a little.
-
- Good luck, Joyce, from Mansfield, Ohio

- I bought Uptime at the news stand afew years ago (3). It is a good product
- though loadstar is mch better. 64Alive is still going and I heard a little
- about 64 light or what ever on another pay online service that begins with a
- "D". D/L the LoadStar Demos online here and see for your self.

- I believe the 'LightDisk' or whatever it was called is now out of business.
- American distribution was to be done through the publisher of 64Alive, Jack
- VanderWhite. I understand also there is to be a 128Alive next year. Don't
- forget TC128 or MicroBytes either.

- Seriously, the list in the December 92 Gazette was about the most complete

- Hi!
-
- If you enter a SET at any main GEnie prompt, you will see sets of menus
- that will allow you to set your Break Key to whatever it is you may feel
- most comfortable sending.

- G.Gowen.. do you have a 128 book that shows ASCII characters and their
- corresponding codes? Most of GEnieites use the Cntrl-C for a break.
- You can automatically set your codes very quickly and for about 5 cents
- worth of time by going to M110;5. That will set all your codes for
- you, then when its finished.. go to *SETTINGS, and reset your page
- scroll to 24 or whatever you like instead of Zero.. Hugs

- As mentioned in another topic (Geos?) if the term you are using won't
- send a true break you can always define a key like the "@" key as a
- break character and whenever GEnie is sent it, even in a e-mail Tbatch
- GEnie will acknowledge the break.
-
- One of my older terms (Sixth Sense 128) never worked correctly sending
- breaks and this is the method I used :)
