- Hi! A new GEnie member, myself, looking over the board. Hoping some of you
- folks can help me locate some magazines I've been trying to find. Any tips or
- info on back issues of old C64 (or other Commodore) computer magazines, send
- me E-mail, or leave a message here. I do have a fair amount of issues
- already, but will accept doubles, to pass on to friends I've gotten interested
- in the Commodore 8-bit computers.
- Also, am interested in finding out addresses and names of any magazines
- which might still be 'out there.' Saw a message posted that seemed to indicate
- TPUG was still around ... is it? Any info on old magazines, or ways to get
- new ones, would be very much appreciated; thanks in advance!!

- Anything? I used to love Transactor, Ahoy!, Info, Run, etc. Are any of these
- out anywhere, or can I get back issues??? Help! I just need #1, #4, and #5 to
- have INFO complete up to issue #48. Anyone know dates the mags died at, if
- they did? Any info, or sources for info, very much appreciated!!

- Before you sell off your 1571 drive in non-working condition for a
- rediculously low price to someone like me, I would suggest trying a little
- basic maintenance first. Pop the cover off and take a good look (preferably
- with a flashlight) at the R/W heads (it might be a little tough for the top
- one, though). Your reading problems could be due to gummy buildup on the
- heads, which is easily remedied by cleaning them with a Q-Tip (or equivalent)
- soaked in isopro- whatever alchohol. (A cleaning disk probably won't work at
- this stage.) Also, since most 1571 owners don't bother upgrading the ROM, do
- keep in mind that when trying to read a just-inserted 1541-format disk, the
- drive will spin around for 15-20 seconds or so and appear to be "erroring-
- out" before it switches itself into 1541 mode and does a clean read of the
- disk. Also, make sure that the top head is seated all the way down on the
- disk, and not blocked by that little pointy device that is designed to prevent
- the heads from touching each other when the latch is closed with no disk
- inserted.
-
- In any case, I am looking to spend not more than $20-25 (including S/H + COD,
- and depending on whats included (cables, etc)). The part that I need is the
- circuit board for the D501 mechanism, and I know that that part isn't sold
- separately, new (you gotta buy the whole mech). I don't even need working
- heads, and I would be willing to buy just the mech itself for less (most
- likely, with one/both heads not working). This is to fix a 1571 that works
- fine but spins the motor constantly, and I've determined that the part I am
- seeking is the culprit, hence, the request.

- Go into the software libraries and search for the string "msd" and the

- Also, in library #33 search for "msd" and you will come up with more

- MSDs and I believe he still can get chip sets.
-
- I have six of the drives with the chips in them. Great for copying, 22

- I seriously doubt you will find one used unless it is part of a system
- being sold. People just do not sell them used as long as they are
- using a modem with their Commodore. If you badly need one I would
- suggest buying a new one from CMD.

- Outlaw: If you need the drive mech part, I would suggest going to an MS-DOS
- users group and seeing if someone over there has a spare drive that they
- wouldn't mind parting with. See, the drive mech in the 1581 is the same as
- the low-density 720k drives in the MS-DOS world (and are largely regarded as
- obsolete), so you shouldn't have to spend more than $25 or so.

- Okay, here's what you do:
-
- Pick up an issue of Computer Shopper (or go to an MS-DOS users group meeting
- as detailed above), and obtain a 720k 3.5 "clone" mechanism. Many different
- companies (100s of 'em) sell these things; I'm suggesting the Ms-DOS group as
- a possible place because you should be able to pick one up for next to
- nothing. (If you do buy one new, don't spend more than $45.) Open up the
- drive, remove the old mechanism (making sure you remember which way the ribbon
- connector is plugged in), remove the faceplate of the replacement, pop it in,
- and try it out. That should be all there is to it.
-
- Good luck!

- I think it's important to note that a LOT of MS-DOS 3.5" mechanisms will not
- have the disk-change signal on the correct pin for use with a 1581, so you may
- have to do a little bit more than just plug it in.

- I have a BASIC 8 ROM chip. But I don't have any docs to explain how to make
- use of it!? I wish someone could tell me how to access the chip or tell me
- what it is used for! I purchased the BASIC 8 package used and the ROM chip
- came with it. Even the previous owner forgot how to make use of it. I had it
- in my computer, but couldn't get any response out of it. PLEASWE HELP!

- Randysx,
-
- Hold down the CONTROL key when powering on, resetting, or SYS65341.
-
- B8 will come up with *its* READY prompt, unless there is a boot disk, in which
- case it will proceed with the boot.
-
- You should know that there were *2* versions of that chip. The first version
- will require that you run the several line program patch. This could be part
- of the boot-after-startup routine if that is the case.
