- William - What exactly do you mean by 'CP/M Module'? And which
- computer are you using? A C-64 or a C-128?
-
- If you are just getting started in CP/M on the C128, you might
- want to download and read the CP/M Primer articles that have
- been a part of the StarBoard Journal here in the FlagShip
- software libraries. The file numbers are #1703 and #2146.
-
- Other sources of CP/M information can be found in the CP/M
- Roundtable at page 685 here on GEnie, where we have our own
- software library and bulletin board area dealing with the C-128.
- There are alot of knowledgeable folks there that are more than
- willing to answer any questions you might have.
-
- If you're looking for paperback publications to help you get
- started in CP/M, I can recommend two good books:
- CP/M Users Guide - by ABACUS
- The CP/M Plus Handbook - by Alan R. Miller
-
- And, of course, you can always just post a message here in this
- category stating what you'd like to know! We're always glad
- to help!

- Bad news maybe for the 64 and CP/M Cart. Unless you have an ancient
- 64 (older than about 2 1/2 years), the probability of the CP/M
- cart working on the 64 is less than 50/50. That's why the CP/M
- cart is no longer sold and all remaining carts were supposedly
- recalled by Commodore. A change was made in the 64 circuitry with
- 64 revison 5 I think that no longer insured compatibility with the
- CP/M. Rev 5 64's have been mfgd since around spring 84 if my
- memory serves me right.

- The changes?!? <<gulp>>
-
- It was just a *small* thing, they relaxed the timing specs of the
- VIC chip ... and that was all it took.
-
- Its *RIP* for that CP/M cart! Commodore Customer Support line
- may have some info for you about all this, BUT, even inthe best of
- situations, the CP/M on the 64 was not compatible with much of anything,
- PD, commercial or whatever.
-
- Running around here somewhere are some of the pioneers of the C-64
- CP/M cartridge like Chris Lampton <CFLAMPTON, i think> and Frank Prindle
- <PRINDLE, i believe>...in fact, they may be reading this. <<Hi guys>>
-
- What were the problems with the C-64 CP/M? Well, besides a not-quite
- standard CP/M version, 40 columns and a Commodore formatted disk, there was
- also the matter of processor switching on the serial bus, and other little
- niceties.
-
- *deb!*

- It was great for messing around with. Chris Lampton wrote a dandy
- 80 column program using the hi-res mode of the 64 which was very
- usable with a green screen monitor. I tell you though that you
- really had to want to putz around with it because working with
- 1541 was agonizing slow. There was also the great CBM error of
- writing the BIOS so only 1 1541 drive would work in CP/M mode
- (Fortunately, a pd patch was created to solve the problem). Unless
- you have an old 64 and access to IEEE drives, forget about CP/M
- on the 64 and go to the 128. The implementation on the 128 is
- a 1000 times better.
