  2. CELEBRATE C-64 DAY
  3.  
  4.     In the history of computing, I can think of few moments that are more
  5. significant than the introduction of the C-64, perhaps the most successful
  6. computing story of all time.
  7.  
  8.     Consider this:
  9. --installed user base of nearly 12 million
  10. --over 10,000 published titles available
  11. --due to its affordable price, the C-64 was the first computer for millions
  12. --without a doubt, it is the world's most popular computer
  13.  
  14.     The staying power and appeal of this machine is without equal.  In an era
  15. of low-cost PC clones and Super Nintendo, sales of this machine actually ROSE
  16. from 1990 to 1991.
  17.  
  18.     The demand for this machine continues to remain strong, largely due to
  19. expanded sales in Europe, especially new markets in Eastern Europe and Eastern
  20. Germany.
  21.  
  22.     At the time of its release, the C-64 represented a technological and
  23. pricing breakthrough.  It made computing a reality for millions of us.  ISN'T
  24. SOME FORMAL RECOGNITION FOR THIS COMPUTER LONG OVERDUE?

  26.     According to the history books, the Commodore 64 was first introduced at
  27. the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas in January 1982, and was shown agai    at the Summer CES in Chicago in June later that year.  Since it was
  28. well-received, Commodore decided to market it, and in September of that year it
  29. went on sale in computer stores for $595.

  31.     In early 1983 it was made available to mass merchants, who reduced the
  32. price to $400.
  33.  
  34.     So, what's the anniversary date of the C-64?  Since there was a period of
  35. about a year from its debut to when it became available to the masses, there
  36. exists some confusion about this.

  38.     In an attempt to settle the confus    n, I would like to get your response to
  39. the following proposal:
  40.  
  41.     September 30 should be declared National C-64 Day, commemorating the tenth
  42. anniversary of this fabled machine.  Current C-64 owners, as well as anyone who
  43. has ever used one, or knows anyone who has used one, would be encouraged to
  44. participate in the celebration.
  45.  
  46.     Users could send a birthday card--preferably one created on the C-64--to
  47. Commodore to show support for this machine.  Users would be urged to indicate
  48. on the card the number    f years they have been C-64 users and to include a note
  49. thanks to Commodore.
  50.  
  51.     This would be an opportunity for the collective Commodore community to
  52. stand up and be counted.  Perhaps you have some other activities that could be
  53. planned.  Let me know.

  55.     C-64 Day could become as big as Earth Day.  Who knows, maybe "Good Morning
  56. America" will host its show on that day from West Chester, PA.
  57.  
  58.     This is an opportunity to be a part of history.  The C-64 has outlasted all
  59. other computers of its kind.  W     not celebrate this remarkable achievement?
