- Included below is information that may be of interest that can be reached
- through the internet mail-gateway. One word of advice however: When
- requesting files _please_ be aware that they 1) can get fairly large, 2)
- they are sent to your mail buffer, and 3) they use a process called uuencode
- (for the binary files - not for the text ones). Several uudecoders can be
- found in the Genie catalogs. Also, it will probably be cheaper for your
- budget to download the iss1.txt-iss8.txt directly from the libraries on
- Genie as they've already been uploaded and you'll spend more time online
- downloading the mail message than you will a direct download.
-
- Given all of that, the next issue of Commodore Hacking will probably be out
- in 3-4 months (maybe sooner) and I'm looking for any software or hardware
- articles dealing with the Commodore 8-bits of a "technical" nature... Please
- email me if you're interested...

- What is a mail-server?
-
- A mailserver is an automated job that will scan my mail file for messages
- with a subject line of "MAILSERV" and will then automatically carry out
- certain operations within the body of the mail message. This makes it
- easier on me and you. Easier for me so that I don't have to deal with 50+
- messages each month asking for files to be sent out and also insures that
- your files that you requested will be sent within 24 hours. In addition
- it allows files to be more easily sent and accessed in case you are not
- able to extract the source files from C= Hacking.
-
- How to use the mail-server / What it is.
-
- This mail-server is intended to help me keep track / more easily update
- my mailing list of individuals who wish to sub-scribe or get back-issues
- of C= Hacking mailed to them.
-
- To use it simply send a message to "duck@pembvax1.pembroke.edu" (me) with
- a subject line of "MAILSERV" and then with one of the following commands
- in the body of the mail message:
-
- Currently the following commands are supported:
-
- help - sends current documentation f file list
- send <filename> - sends the associated file
- subscribe - subscribe to the mailing list automatically
- catalog - show list of available source /uuencoded binaries
-
- Please note that the mailserver is only run at 2:00 AM and 2:00 PM EST.
-
- Catalog List
-
- The catalog list is no longer going to be carried in the documentation due to
- how frequently it's updated. As such, if you wish to obtain a list of files
- currently available please send a mailserver command of "catalog" (as
- discussed within) to the mailserver.
-
- Snail-Mail Alternatives
-
- For those of you who wish to obtain C= Hacking via regular mail please send
- $5.00 for a 3 1/2 disk in CBM format for all 8 issues currently available.
- Since I'm working on the "I'll do it when I get around to it" method please
- allow at least 3-8 weeks before delivery (it should be much sooner
- typically). Please note that if you and a friend both want a copy of the
- disk, just buy one disk and copy it - I'm just charging for my time and the
- disk - not for the magazine. The magazine is "free". I can be reached at
- the following:
-
- Craig Taylor
- Rt 2 Apt 1 College Court
- Pembroke, NC 28372

- I have an Easy Opitions modem by IBM and can't get it to connect at 1200 or
- 2400 bps!! I have tried setting the rate or letting the modem figure it out
- and NEITHER has worked, or I think I have... I hate switching the cable from
- my 2400 to 14.4 every time I call GEnie! If anyone can help, it would be
- nice!! The reason I got this modem was because it was CHEAP from Damark and
- locally it was $40 more!

- Isn't there an AT command to lock the modem at a baud rate. I can see
- where letting the modem sort things out will go to 9600. This will always
- go to the highest setting I believe. I don't have a fast modem as yet,

- DB,
-
- The connect rate, nor for that matter the carrier bps rate should not matter.
-
- Try: (1) substantially increasing the "carrier wait" time in your Term, to
- something like 60 seconds, and (2) set the baud rate to that which YOU want
- within your Term.
-
- That ought to do it!

- To: Ed.. Yes, I do believe I tried to LOCK the Baud rate, in fact thats how I
- got it to work with Delphi! Before that it would do the SAME thing at 9600 as
- it does at 1200 and 2400. BTW I got mine from Damark for $95. U.S Robotics
- are HIGH priced unless you get a SYSOP discount. Great modems, but
- EXPENSUIVE!
-
- To: Outlaw Thats what I did was set one of the S regs to 2400 and tried it.
- All it did was HISS back and forth for 20 second before GEnie disconnected! I
- believe it timed out.
-
- To: H.Herman It's NOT me that timing out but GEnie! So increasing the connect
- time didn't matter, but if someone as a SUGGESTION on how to set it, I WILL
- try it. Thats how I got it work at 9600 on Delphi, someones suggestion but
- it ONLY worked at 9600 bps. I will TRY again, to lets Desterm 2.01 set the
- baud rate and see what happens.

- Try an AT&K5 before you dial out. I had some similar problems once when using
- a cable that didn't support hardware handshaking on a different computer
- platform; when I tried logging on to systems, I could see everything the host
- was sending me, but the host wouldn't acknowledge anything I typed. Since
- Desterm doesn't support hardware handshaking, and since your modem is
- currently set for that, changing to transparent XON/XOFF could possibly be the

- Okey.... Give this a try: Send your modem a: ATS23=13

- Since you will be testing this new setting, be sure that you next dial the

- I cannot find where on the BB we posted about this, so if some Sysop who is

-
- Now to the reson for the post: I have had second thoughts....
-
- Specifically: Dialogue will let you create modem files, so that with a R-V
- manual you should be able to do thlis, and have Dialogue run its auto features
- with your modem.
-
- My experiences with a R-V modem are very limited (used them remotely when they
- used to be part of the early beta testing at PCP.)
-
- Anyway....
-
- As I recall, you should be able to get it to manually dial a number by using a
- "D". In other words: D555-1212.
-
- I hope I remebered this right....
-
- AT least this should get you started with the modem, and dialing out. To
- access all its features, create a new modem file for Dialogue.
-
- Let us know how you do.

- on it. I did hear once from somewhere that creating the keys for such a
- system would probably take a 64/128 system several days of number crunching.
- But, as yet, I've not heard of anything that will do it.

- Using a SDA file you can encrypt .ARC files pretty well.

- If you had a Ramlink equiped system, wouldn't the time be dramaticly reduced?
- Also this long time would only be done once, right? Just to make the keys,
- but for the actual encryption, it would not take so long right? Also are
- there any encription programs (besides ARC) in the libary? Thanks in
- advance.

- Implementing the routines to encrypt the files would take the most
- time and space. I do not know about the keys.

- I believe there are encryption programs in the archive that will do various
- kinds of text. Also, sometime ago I wrote an encryption program myself, which
- I have yet to release based on the Vignere Tableau encyrption meathod (which
- by no means is considered state of the art). I still haven't heard of any PGP
- Encyrption for the Commodore. As to the time it takes, its not really disk
- drive access that's the problem for the Commodore. The keys this form of
- encryption draws up are large 64bit chunks of pure nasty mathmatics. While
- this kind of work is possible on the C64/128 (possibly even more accurately
- than some Pentiums are able to do it), I certainly wouldn't want to hold my
- breath while the computer labored over it. The beauty of the system though is
- that once the keys are created its very quick to put the data back to its
- original form, plus the keys can be geared towards one specific person or to a
- group. Its a very flexible system, and unlike my Vignere Tableau based
- routines, are very difficult for even the most advanced computers to crack.
- One suggestion I might offer, however, is that if you own a 128 you might
- should go over to the CP/M roundtable and ask this same question. The C128 has
- a built in CP/M mode that few people take advantage of, and its been my
- experience that a lot of applications show up for CP/M before they're
- converted to run in the 128's native mode. Its worth a shot, and its
- relatively easy to convert programs and data files back and forth between the
- 128's CP/M mode.

- A friend of mine got a Supramodem 2400 and with it came an RS 232 interface
- with all seven wires disconnected. The interface was made by Peak Peripherals,
- Inc. Using the schematics from the Datapump file, (here in the libs somewhere)
- we were able to determine somewhat what wire went where. My question is, would
- that be a reliable file to use in this case, and if not, how should the wires
- be connected? Is Peak Peripherals still in business? Does their interface
- support all or most Hayes commands? Or is this some type of interface that
- became obsolete when the SwiftLink came along?

- The interface has nothing to do with commands, those are sent by the
- computer through the interface. I have used mine to run geoPublish
- to a Postscript laser up to 9600 bps.
-
- If you need help figuring which wires go where, search for the word "null"
- in the libraries and download the files relating to building a null modem
- adapter.
-
- When opening it up make sure you release the stress relief bar, accessed by
- the two screws on the top of the case. When pulling the connector out make
- sure you push the cable from the back of the connector at
- the same time, so you do not pull on the wires.
-
- As for wire placement, looking from the top with the connector facing you:
-
- brown black
- black red
- yellow orange
- gray
-
- That should be enough to reattach the wires in the correct order?

- This program is file #13333 here in our Commodore Libraries. It claims to
- allow you to automatically capture all NEW or MARKed messages in up to 30
- RoundTable Bulletin Boards, and automatically post your responses. The file
- dissolved fine, and looks like everything intact. However, when it's through
- capturing and saving to disk, I cannot get the READER to pull the file back
- up. It searches the disk for what it just saved and then returns a NO MESSAGE
- FILES ON DISK error. In the documentation, it says that all saved message
- files are preceded with a reverse 'a' before the actual filename. After
- calling up a directory, I can see that the program indeed saved it correctly,
- but yet the READER is still unable to find it. Since 90 people have accessed
- this file, I was wondering if I could get some feedback on this program.
- Thanks!

- Wizardry,
- I just removed the file from the libraries as I was never able
- to get it to work properly. I thought it was just me with my Swiftlink,
- RamLink, 9600 modem, and internal ROM setup. It is not a program the RT
- ever officially supported, you might want to drop the author an e-mail and
- see if he still supports it.

- Hi Dan!
-
- The ACE program system we have in the libraries will uudecode those files
- for you, among other stuff the ACe operating system will do. I7ve only
- uudecoded something a couple times but if memory serves me right, you don't
- have to worry about the text before or after the uuencoded part. ACE will
- ignore that for you. The latest ACE file numbers are: 17044, 17045, 17046,
- and 17047. Thes are .SFX files so just need to be loaded and run to dissolve
- the ACE related files to a blank disk.

- You don't need to strip away the text. UUencode the entire file. The reciever
- will Decode it and it wiull be just fine. :)

- Using ACE, it is easy to either uudecode or uuencode
- almost any file.
- You should have the file that is to be decoded on the same disk as
- the ACE system (a 1581 or larger drive will work the best).
- After ACE is loaded, all you have to do is type
- uudecode filename
- That's it! Sound easy? It is.
