Installing Dual Top from the deskTop :
Locate the
@DUAL_TOP
file on the desk top. (The Icon for Dual Top is shown above). Double click on
@ DUAL_TOP
to start it up. Dual Top has now replaced the deskTop as the System Controller. From now on, when you exit from an application, control of the system will be passed to Dual Top. If you want to pass control of the system back to the deskTop, just double click on
@ DESKTOP.
This action will pass control of the system back to the deskTop. You can also use the menu option "DESKTOP" (under the "geos" menu) to perform this same function.
@Note:
128_DualTop is an 80 column only application. If you are in 40 column mode when you execute 128_DualTop, you will have to switch your monitor to 80 column mode.
Auto Booting Dual Top
To have Dual Top automatically installed during the boot process you will need to place
@DUALBOOT
and
@DUAL_TOP
on your system disk.
@DUALBOOT
must be placed after the
@ CONFIGURE
file to function properly. When the auto execute file
@DUALBOOT
is run during the boot process, a message will be displayed on the screen showing that Dual Top has been installed.
@Note:
Dual Top will install the first Print Driver and the first Input Driver on the boot disk in the same way the deskTop did.
@Note:
@DUALBOOT
does NOT have to be the last auto execute file on your boot disk. Auto execute files will function normally before and after
@DUALBOOT
@Note:
If the system is in 40 column mode while booting, 128_DualTop will switch the system to 80 column mode after all auto execute files have been executed.

sub menu, the last drive used will be opened.
auto sort
If active, all directories will be sorted alphabetically before being displayed.
auto overwrite
If active, the overwrite warning dialog box will be bypassed.
This option is most helpful when you are updating several files from the REU to disk. Not having to approve the overwrite of each file can save a lot of time as you can start the copy process and not have to watch over it.
@*
Be careful with this option active, as you will not be warned of a copy overwrite of an existing file.
auto preferences
If active, preference data will be loaded in when a disk containing a preference data file is opened.
auto video adjust
If active, the dialog box asking for approval to change video modes is disabled. This speeds things up, as you do not have to approve the mode change whenever you run a 40 column application
While this option is active, a program that runs in either video mode can be forced to run in 40 column mode by having the g key in the up position.
VDC 64K mode
If you have 64K of VDC RAM you will want to have this option active
This option allows Dual Top to save a copy of it's screen in the upper VDC memory. Using the screen copy, Dual Top can instantly draw it's screen when it is executed. There is a tremendous speed improvement with this option active.

DUALBOOT will automatically set this option if 64K of VDC RAM is detected during boot

@4 Special Features
Ram Drive Priority System
Ram Drive Priority was designed to take full advantage of RAM drives. When a data file is double clicked, the RAM drive will always be searched first for the data file's parent application.
@Example 1
Drive A: contains GEOWRITE and GEOWRITE documents. RAM drive B: contains applications (including GEOWRITE), fonts, desk accessories, and Dual Top.
A: 1571 ;Data drive
B: RAM 1571 ;Application drive
When a GEOWRITE document is double clicked on in drive A, the Ram Priority System will search the RAM drive in slot B: first for the document's parent application (GEOWRITE) . GEOWRITE will then be loaded from drive B:, and the GEOWRITE document from drive A: will be opened. There is a great time savings here because GEOWRITE was loaded from the RAM drive instead of from the disk in drive A:.
@Example 2
Drives A: and B: contain data files, RAM drive C: contains applications, fonts, desk accessories, and Dual Top.
A: 1571 ;Data drive
B: 1581 ;Data drive
C: RAM 1571 ;Application drive
When a document is double clicked on in drives A: or B:, the Ram Priority System will search the RAM drive in slot C: first for the document's parent application. If the parent application is in drive C: the parent application will be loaded from drive C:, and the double clicked document will be opened.
@Note:
If the parent application is not found in the RAM drive, then the real drives will be searched for the parent application.
Drive Swapping
To change the positions of the drives, select the drive pair to be swapped from the
@configure
menu.
@Note

To remove the 4th drive from the system:
@1:
Select

from the

The drive is now back online and ready to use.
Example of use: The system will be out of use for a period of time, but the system needs to remain on so that the REU does not have to be reloaded. In this case, it is desirable to turn the drives off. With this feature, the drives can be reactivated without having to enter the 128 CONFIGURE file to reinstall the drives.
Resetting Dual Top
@Reset

command found in all the other applications, desk accessories, etc. The only difference is that when Dual Top "quits", the system passes control back to Dual Top because it is the system controller. This feature is necessary for users of GEOWIZARD and CMD's SWITCHER. It allows you to exit from Dual Top after it was run from within one of these excellent pseudo multi taskers.

The kernel has the ability to access set (CD) the same as set (AB), so supporting file copying, or any other function, is possible between the two sets. All Dual Top functions can be performed on the disks and files from both drive sets.
@*
You can run applications from drive set (CD).
@*
When a file from drive set (AB) is double clicked, the parent application does not have to be in that set. The application can reside in set (CD) and still load the double clicked data file from set (AB).
You cannot open a data file from drive set (CD) by double clicking on it. Double clicking on a data file in drive set (CD) will result in the file's parent application displaying a dialog box saying IO Error 5 (File Not Found). This is because the BSW applicatons only look in the first drive set for the double clicked file.
@*
Files can be opened from drive set (CD). To do this, the parent application must be on the same disk as the file to be opened and the application must be opened first. When the application shows the list of files on the disk, the disk name at the top of the file selection box will show the name of the disk in drive B. The file listing will be correct but the disk name will not . This can be confusing if you are not expecting it.

Changes made to DualTop during the change in owners:
Add-On modules are no longer available. It is a shame, but necessary. They just
couldn't handle anything over 3Kbytes, which limited their usefulness. To add
insult to injury, noone seemed to be interested in writing a module with those
restrictions. The result was that only one module was ever made and put to market.
Have no fear, Convert is now an internal part of the upgraded version of DualTop now
being distributed.

A new feature has been added to this version also.
Directory display "filetype filters".
In this Demo version only five types are supported.
The file filters are sort routines to show only the type of file you select.
@*
DualTop now sports a system error trap to relieve you from minor system
errors that might otherwise cause you to re-boot GEOS.
You will no doubt notice the cosmetic changes in DualTops screen
(minor as they are).
@*
The program disk comes with a Kernal Patch for DualTop, to allow it to be
positioned on any of the 4 disk drives.
No more need to keep a copy of DualTop on your Data Disk!!!
This feature is not available with the Demo. version.
@*
The program disk also comes with an Auto-Execute file that will automatically
configure Drive D when you boot up.
In closing, I would like to thank Paul Murdaugh for his efforts in the CBM/GEOS
community these past years. We will miss him.
