- Sounds to me like you have one of the original 1571's. They had a problem
- with initializing the second side of the disk. If I inserted a 1541 formatted
- disk, it would take about a minute to initialize. Also saving a file to the
- second side would take forever. The problem is as easy to solve as getting a
- replacement ROM for it.

- I find this ludicrous remark. You mean to tell me, there isn't one
- Commodore programmer out there that is making money on their product? Hmm,
- kinda shoot the whole idea doesn't it? I guess all those programs that
- Software Support, CMD and several other companies out there that still

-
- I seem to have made a small bit of money on my software. I know Nick Rossi

- even Rod Gasson has made a bit on his sharware QWKRR128, course I didn't

-

- Yeah, especially with people like you making a profit from their hard work
- and not paying them a dime. How you folks can get away with selling a
- product that contains several existing and still legally binding
- copyrights, is beyond me. I would think selling this overseas would be a
- federal offense, but then again, I'm no lawyer. Isn't the spa, some kind
- of copyright police or something? I thought I heard something about that a

- I've had my Quantum 105 Meg now for about 4 years without a problem.
- For the CMD, its real simple. Take the casing apart, unscrew the old HD,
- unplug it, then plug in the new one, screw it down, put the case back
- together and follow the steps in the CMD HD for installing the DOS and
- partitioning your new HD. Thats all there is to it.
-
- I would suggest a quick inspection of the mother board of the
- controller. Specifically look at the connector where the Power connector
- plugs into the mother board on the bottom side. Your looking for cold
- solder joints. If there are no cold solder joints, simply put everything
- back together with the new drive and run the CMD HD Utilities for DOS setup
- and partitioning. If you do find cold solder joints, now would be a good
- time to fix it. :)

- At least some of these symptoms make it sound like you have an original
- ROM 1751. Commodore first released them with a bunch of bugs, then later
- fixed the bugs and charged for the fix. Good business practice, I guess.
- ;-)
-
- The fix is still the same -- you've got to replace the ROM in your drive.
- Unfortunately, Commodore isn't selling them (or anything else) anymore.
- Fortunately, a CMD JiffyDOS ROM will solve your problem, and will work fine
- even if your computer doesn't have JD. So for about $30 you can fix it
- (assuming I'm right about what the problem is.)
-
- Other things that will help a bit:
- Don't use flippies in it. Early ROMs don't like them.
- Use clean disks (don't reformat old ones).
- Don't save more than 160K total, even on disks formatted double-sided.
- Use Geos. Its 1571 driver fixes the problem.
-
- Hope this helps.

- Ok folks, this is a question about Novaterm.......
-
- I have been having the worst trouble lately with Novaterm and I am not
- sure why. I have a 128 and I have tried to get the 2 1571 disk drives
- into 71 mode. I can't! I was given the command to go into the Disk
- Commands and follow the menu. I did that. I went into the disk commands
- and I followed the instructions. When the command came up for DOS> I was
- told to type this: o0>m1 (Or something to that nature) Well, when I do
- this, the error light on th drive comes on and flashes!
- What I am trying to do is to get my 1571 drive into 71 mode. I have done
- everything I can think of to do this and it isn't working.....:(
- Could someone shed some light on this? I am getting frustrated!
- To confess, I have not used Novaterm vety long and am not familiar with
- it that well. Any help is appreciated!

- Has anyone else had problems with this thing? It has worked flawlessly
- for me so far, but lately it produces code like this:
-
- (This code is part of a general disk routine handler I'm writing: it opens
- a file. RT3 is supposed to send a block-read command.)
-
- C03C 20 C0 FF JSR OPEN
- C03F 90 E8 BCC EXIT
- C041 4C E1 C0 JMP ERROR
- ;RT3: SEND U1, X=T; Y=S
- C044 4C E1 C0 RT3 STX RT3TR ;******??
- ....
- C057 A6 50 LDX <RT3ASE ;LOCATION OF THE ASCII TRANSLATION
- C059 A4 C1 LDY >RT3ASE ;FOR THE SECTOR NUMBER
- C05B 20 EC C0 JSR A2ASC ;ACCUM 2 ASCII CODE IN $YYXX
- C05E EA NOP ;BREAKPOINT FOR TESTING
- C05F EA EC C0 RT3SND LDA #15 ;******?? (COMMAND CHANNEL)
- C062 20 C9 FF JSR CHKOUT
- C065 A2 00 LDA #0
- C067 A2 00 FF RT3LOP LDA RT3TXT,X ;******??
-
- and the pattern continues: it drops the command on lines with labels.
- Not on every line with a label; my initial jump table looks fine, and the
- entire RT1 routine came out OK. A few lables in the last part worked
- out as well. Are there any known bugs with this thing? Any cautions I
- should know about as I start doing including with the .LIB directive?
- Also, any recommendations on an assembler to move to? I've been happy
- with the CMA, but I wouldn't mind getting some kind of relative addressing
- (no more RT3LP1 types of lables.)

- Novaterm is a very good term program, but why would you use it when you
- have a 128? (just curious)
-
- Anyway, power up the 128 in 128 mode then send the command "GO64"
- this will leave the 1571's in 71 mode for you. Then boot up NT.
-
- Or just get jiffydos, and save yourself about 3 minutes everytime you
- load NovaTerm and Jiffydos will automatically sense what type of disk is
- in the drive.

-
- "The Theory"
-
- The basic theory behind using the joystick ports lies in the 6526 CIA 1/A
- chip that controls the keyboard, joystick ports, and is used for tape and
- serial timing. For my simple tests, only 4 memory locations in that
- chip's registers are actually used: $DC00-$DC03 (56320-56323).
-
- If you have the book "Programming the Commodore 64" by Raeto Colin West,
- open to page 125 for a nice diagram of how the CIA looks in memory. If
- not, open to pages 328 & 329 of your Commodore 64 Programmer's Reference
- Guide. Here's a quick summary:
-
- $DC00 is Joystick Port 2 ("CIA Port A")
- $DC01 is Joystick Port 1 ("CIA Port B")
- Bit 4=Fire, Bit 3=E/Right, Bit 2=W/Left, Bit 1=S/Down, Bit 0=N/Up
-
- $DC02 is "Port A Data Direction Register"
- $DC03 is "Port B Data Direction Register"
-
- To read bits coming in (for a joystick, for example), you set the bits you
- want to read to 0 in the appropriate Data Direction Register, and then
- read the appropriate bits in the Port. To write bits out, you set the
- bits you want to write to 1 in the appropriate DDR, then set the bits you
- want to send on the Port.
-
- Don't forget that the internal keyboard routine expects to see $FF in
- $DC02, and $00 in $DC03. This is the major headache of this kind of
- project. The practical upshot of all this: if you disable the interrupts
- to get rid of the keyboard, reset the Data Direction Registers to how you
- want to read or write, and then put the right bits into the two ports,
- whatever is connected to the other side can read or write to this. This
- may be easier to see with an example:
-
-
- "The Box, Mark 1"
-
- Parts: 1 joystick extension cable (or end from a broken joystick), 1
- project box, 1 or more LEDs, 1 or more switches, one of those
- speaker-wire clip 8-packs (the things you can clip wires into), and
- connection methods (clip leads, solder, etc.) + a monitor or assembler.
-
- In the Commodore 64 Programmer's Reference Guide, page 395, they show the
- pinout for the two joystick ports. Something like this:
-
- Joystick Common
- ------------------------- 1=Bit 0 7=5 volt
- ! o o o o o ! 2=Bit 1 8=GND
- ! 1 2 3 4 5 ! 3=Bit 2
- ! o o o o ! 4=Bit 3 5=POT Y
- ! 6 7 8 9 ! 6=Bit 5 9=POT X
- ------------------- Mouse/Paddle
-
- What you want to do is wire up pins 1-4 to 4 ends of the speaker wire
- things, pin 7 to one of the speaker wire things, pin 8 to one of them, and
- maybe wire a couple switches in as well. Hook up an LED between pins 7
- and 8: plug it in a joystick port, and turn on the computer. Hopefully
- it lights. If not, turn the LED around, check connections, etc. Once
- you know which way the LED works, remember which pin goes to 7 and which
- goes to 8; these remain the same throughout the experiments.
-
- ****
- Once you know which way to plug in your LED, hook it between pins 0 and 8.
- Turn the computer off, plug it into Joystick Port 2, and turn it back on.
- It should light up, since port 2 is set to all outputs, and the system is
- constantly looking for input there. Then try hooking it up to pins 7 and
- 0, and plugging it into port 1. It should light up as well. Either of
- these may cause characters to run across the screen, just like if you were
- holding up on the joystick in the appropriate port.
- ****
- * Bzzt! Wrong! The joystick forces bits to be on in the correct
- * memory Port, regardless of what is there to begin with. Sorry. Well,
- * if you hook the LED across ground the pins 1-4 or 6, you should get
- * a response.
- ***
-
- Now try hooking up a few LEDs to pins 1-4 and 8. For sake of example,
- I'll work with pins 1 and 2. Hook your box to port 1, and turn on the
- computer. The LEDs should be off. Now load up your favorite monitor (or
- assembler, I guess) and type in this:
-
- A C000 sei ; disable keyboard
- lda #0 ; initialize
- sta $DC01 ; joyport 1
- sta $DC03 ; and its DDR : 4321 pins
- lda #07 ; that's 0000 1111=bits 0-3, pins 1-4 outputs
- sta $DC03 ; that's DDR B, setting pins 1-4 to output
- lda #01 ; pin 1 on
- sta $DC01 ; and get it going
- here jmp here ; here is the address your monitor gave for this line.
- G C000
-
- Hopefully the LED turned on and the computer seems to lock up. Press
- RESTORE a few times to get back to the monitor (at least, my monitor does
- that.) By editing the line
-
- lda #01 ; pin 1 on
-
- to anything from 0 to 15, you can control the lights via their appropriate
- bits. Have fun.
-
- By changing the LEDs to being hooked between pins 7 and 1-4, with a switch
- wired in, and a nice BASIC program, you can read the status (just like a
- joystick). Page 344 of the Programmer's Reference Guide has a program you
- can adapt: just get rid of all the stuff about North and South and just
- PRINT the value in 56320 (port 2) or 56321 (port 1). Push the switch, the
- value should change. Yay!
-
- Now, hook an LED between pins 1 and 2. Put the voltage side (pin 7) on
- pin 1. Get back into your monitor, and try this:
-
- A C000
- sei
- lda #00 ; init
- sta $DC01
- sta $DC03
- lda #01 ; output for pin 1, input for pin 2
- sta $DC03
- sta $DC01 ; activate
- nop ; pause
- nop
- nop ;*the pause is not needed, but it makes sure.
- nop
- nop
- lda $DC01 ; read
- sta $FE ; temp
- lda $00 ; reset
- sta $DC03 ; normally all reads
- cli ; back to normal
- lda $FE ; reload acc
- brk ; exit to monitor
- G C000
-
-
- Hopefully, the accumulator now holds $03. The pause may take longer, or
- may not be needed (my notes don't indicate). By setting the appropriate
- bits, you can now read and write through the port. If you have two boxes,
- you can read and write between joystick ports (much safer). "But," you
- ask, "I can't do much in the way of input..." Well, that's why you need:
-
-
- "The Box, Mark 2"
-
- Parts: "The Box, Mark 1", Other end of joystick extension cable or similar
- 9-pin Male port, 1351 mouse or compatible, good ML skills.
-
- Remember we didn't use pin 6/bit 5, the fire button? This is why: if you
- wire in an extra joystick port with pins 5-9 attached, you can hook a 1351
- up to it and read that from the SID chip, with the fire button running
- from pin 6 (bit 5) on the CIA. You don't want to hook up pins 1-4 because
- the other fire buttons run off there.
-
- Also, you want to make sure you set the CIA appropriately: $DC00 bits 7
- and 6 control which paddle you're reading:
-
- 10xx xxxx = Paddles in Joyport 1
- 01xx xxxx = Paddles in Joyport 2
-
- I'm sorry I don't have much in the way of specific examples for this,
- because this is where I stopped doing things and just wrote down ideas.
- If I can find that box again, I should be able to do a full-blown writeup
- for C=Hacking or something. The science fair curse strikes again.
-
-
- A MikeNet Cable
-
- To set up an actual cable to hook between two Commies and still allow one
- of them to use a mouse (for, say, selecting files from an on-screen
- directory list and menu?), you want to hook lines 1-4 direct connect, and
- pins 5-9 to pins 5-9 of a male 9-pin port or cable to hook to your
- 1351-compatible.
-
-
- File transfer
-
- The direct-connect file transfer protocol I had in mind would use pins 1
- and 2 to send 2 bits at a time, pin 3 for a RDY line from the sending
- machine, and pin 4 for an ACK line from the receiving machine. Basically,
- the RDY line would change level when the sending computer had the
- appropriate bits on pins 1 and 2, and the ACK line would change every time
- the receiving computer got it. Or something like that. Or do like Craig
- Bruce and junk all that kind of ACKing for speed. Whatever.
-
-
- Network setup
-
- I had two basic ideas for network setups, a Ring style (not too great) and
- a Server style (cool, but requires lots of hardware).
-
- RingNet
-
- Each computer would be hooked from their joyport 2 to the next computer's
- joyport 1. One machine is designated "Master". This machine would send
- "I'm number 1, you're a Slave, take the next number and pass it along"
- until the Master received something like "I'm number 8, you're a Slave,
- take the next number and pass it along". Of course, the Master knows it's
- not a Slave. Then it sends out something like "There's 8 computers in the
- ring. We're open for business."
-
- Then, each computer can pass messages to each computer by number, and if
- you get a message that isn't your number, you pass it along. The master
- computer double-checks that the ring is working, and resets it if
- necessary.
-
- How can the computer keep working? Well, Craig Bruce has that 3-key
- rollover routine that also checks to see if the joystick ports are being
- used: if so, just trigger a routine to handle the message, pass it along
- if necessary, then clear the ports and continue. That's why I designated
- an RDY line: if that's up, the previous computer has a message to send.
-
- As long as the messages aren't sent very often, the system shouldn't slow
- down too much, and you may even be able to do other things in the
- meantime. Or you could go to where I got the idea from, the Atari ST
- program MIDIMaze, and write a fun game like that. Of course, you have to
- use the mouse to control it, but something could be arranged.
-
- Another game idea: Bard's Tale style MUD, full mouse control.
-
-
- Server Setup
-
- With a server, my design has a box hooked between the server and the other
- systems in the network. This box has its own processor (it might be a 64
- only running this program) that has lines running to each system. Data
- pins 1 and 2 are hooked up to all systems and the box. Each system gets
- its own RDY and ACK line (from somewhere!) The server and the box have a
- standard 1/2/RDY/ACK that the box echos to the appropriate system. Each
- system has a number; the server is 0.
-
- Basically, when a system has a request for the server, it raises its ACK
- line; when the box and server are ready to process, the box raises the RDY
- line for that system, and then they transfer messages. If the system is
- sending a message to another system (like talk or ping in unix) the box
- handles sending that along. Otherwise, the box calls up the server, and
- sends messages to there to be handled.
-
- The messages would be queued, to avoid deadlocks--whenever a system is
- sending a message, the box would check to see if that system had any
- messages it needs to receive, and send them.
-
-
- That's basically all I have right now...feel free to comment on this, send
- me messages, design better systems, etc.

- How many people have recieved their Super CPU? from CMD? I heard they
- were shipping.....
- Let me share some thoughts about this and how programmers fit into the
- picture......
- I understand that with new hardware, new software is sure to
- follow....here is something that I perceive to be a problem. First, how
- many people write software for Commodore anymore? I know of one....He
- belongs to my club! The name? Maurice Randall....I know of Nick Rossi
- (The creator of Novaterm) and a mixture of others. Here is something that
- has me concerned.....When the SuperCPU is out and in people's hands, is
- new software going to be created? The reason that I ask, is because I see
- more and more people abandoning the C= market and not enough people
- helping out to fill the void! Where are the programmers? I really hope
- that the new SuperCPU will be a hit among GEOS users, but I would
- sincerely love to have a revision done on GEOS. Don't you think it is
- about time that GEOS gets a major overhaul?
- If the new SuperCPU is going to work, then I would suggest that GEOS gets
- a new lease on life...and a new life! I am no a programmer and I don't
- know enoug to do such a major project...but it seems to me that GEOS does

- Tim,
- I just tried it and it worked fine on my system (NOVATERM 9.5)... The only
- thing is to make sure you are sending these exact letters: u0>m1
- (That is, U, as in umpire...) Not "or something to that nature"- anything
- else will cause the drive to error out... Also, if you reset the drive
- or issue a soft reset "UJ" command, your drive will revert back to 1541 mode.
- If this still dosen't work, your hardware may be defective.
-
- One drawback to NOVATERM when using two drives, there is no easy way to
- change the DISK COMMAND/DIRECTORY commands from one device to another.
- Hopefully, Nick will fix this in NT9.6.?. The only way I have found to
- do it is to set UPLOAD device to your first drive and DOWNLOAD device to
- your second drive (or vice-versa) then, in term mode, activate UPLOAD then
- abort and all commands will be sent to your first drive. Likewise- select
- DOWNLOAD then abort and all commands are sent to your second drive and so
- on... hope it helps-

- Howdy;
-
- Ti> I understand that with new hardware, new software is sure to

- Ti> how many people write software for Commodore anymore?
-
- Some off-the-cuff that come to mind:
-
- Rod Gasson - QRR Quick Offline Read and Reply, Dave Schmoll - EZ
- Loader, CMD Hard Drive Menu System. Craig Bruce - Zed Editor 128,
- Ace Operating System, Jim Brain - New Buddy 816 Assembler. Myself -
- Spray Paint, Karma Assembler, RES 80128, Fontigus 128, Maurice
- Randall - Mr. Geos everything. Nick Rossi - Nova Term. And
- Loadstar sure seems to be able to buy programs (so somebody is
- writing them).
-
- Ti> something that has me concerned.....When the SuperCPU is out and in
- Ti> people's hands, is new software going to be created?
-
- I'm sure there will be - but it is a catch 22, why spend the time
- developing something only to have it pirated by so many?
-
- Ti> The reason that I
- Ti> ask, is because I see more and more people abandoning the C= market
- Ti> and not enough people helping out to fill the void! Where are the
- Ti> programmers?
-
- Oh, they are out there. I know of several good programs setting on
- programmers disks because they don't want to give it away. I don't
- think it is so much a lack of programmers, but a lack of a decent
- software company to market much of what has already been produced.
- If were a software reseller, and dropped into this group and saw
- guys selling entire pirated CD collections of software, would you
- want to get into this market? Why do you think they all left in the
- first place?
-
- Ti> I really hope that the new SuperCPU will be a hit among
- Ti> GEOS users, but I would sincerely love to have a revision done on
- Ti> GEOS. Don't you think it is about time that GEOS gets a major
- Ti> overhaul?
-
- Why - it would make zero money and cost thousands (if not tens of
- thousands) of hours to upgrade. Notice that CMD does mostly
- hardware with forays into software only when necessity to support
- their hardware? With piracy to sad, there is no use in developing a
- new Geos - it would be a waste of time and effort for zero reward.
-

-
- Speed alone is the one thing Geos has always needed. Running under
- the Scpu, may be the first time in over a Decade that Geos actually
- works like it was suppose to in the first place.

- From what I hear, GEOS _does_ get a new lease on life with the
- SuperCPU.
- GEOS's major fault was that it was SLOW. Doesn't sound so slow anymore.
- There are still quite a few programmers out there. But I don't know
- how
- many plan on developing FOR the SuperCPU. It's not like the PC market
- where the programmers push the envelope to force you to upgrade to the
- next
- level of INTEL technology. This is the first true proccessor upgrade
- for
- a 64. Who knows how the community will actually respond.
- When I save up enough spare cash to pick on up, I will certainly want
- to
- play with the idea of ?native? SuperCPU programs; but I doubt we will
- see
- very many over-hauls of major products for what may or may not (hope
- not!)
- turn out to be a 'niche' market. Think about how many programs you find
- in ?native? 128 mode. How about 80 columns? VDC? Not a whole lot. Not
- meaning to be negative; I certainly hope it will take off. (At least
- long
- enough for me to buy mine! =] )

- It's in the drive manual as well as in the FAQ's. Locate the half-moon
- jumpers on you drive cct board, and cut the trace on one to change the
- drive number.
