- Yes and no. It's not really as complicated as that. Do you need to
- format the drive? What SIZE drive is it? (that's the complicated part,
- if any). More info would be helpful.

-
- There are quite a few chips in the computer, any one of which will
- give you a black screen on power up. You've already eliminated one
- possible cause by swapping power supplies. Note that a bad supply can
- damage chips in the computer, which will then not work with a good
- supply. The PLA chip is the most common failure in the C64. It is one
- of several large chips that normally run very hot. The PLA is marked
- as U17 on the PC board, at least on all the C64s I've seen. It's part
- number could be CBM 906114-01, 82S100PLA, or 93459DC.

-
- That's a very good point. Unless you have a bad power supply that is
- burning the chips out, installing a good chip in a "dead" computer
- should do no harm. However, it may not always tell you what the
- problem is. What if you have more than one bad chip in there? The
- best way to check a suspected "bad" chip is to test it in a working
- board. I have one C-64 with all the major chips socketed that I use as
- a "test" board. Now when I want to check a dead board, I remove chips
- one at a time and test them. Now I'm -sure- I'll never put back a
- defective chip by mistake. It saves a lot of time and "tail chasing".
-
- > Is there anywhere on any ftp or www sites on troubleshooting? I've
- > had a brief look but cannot find help on faulty machines?
-
- Not that I know of. Most of the help you will see is from this very
- newsgroup. There are a few old books on the subject of repairing the
- C64 and 1541 drive. Some things you can repair yourself, and some
- require technical help. I give as much information as I can here to
- help fellow Commodore users, but if the problems get very complicated,
- you will need to find a local user group (or a friendly technician)
- to give you a hand. Distribution of information is what the user
- groups are all about. Parts for the C64 are still available from
- several sources in this Country, but stock is shrinking. I'm not sure
- what the situation is in other Countries... probably the same.
- Obviously, no new parts are being manufactured. Almost everything is
- surplus. One company that still sells new parts and has worldwide
- sales is Jameco Electronics. They are based in California, USA.
