Wait for the forsale stuff...It's often cheaper to buy a different C=3D64
than to fix your old one. I've seen them advertised for around $25.

Some of us will never give up on the C=3D64. There are many reasons why. =
I
use mine because I understand it better than the PC. I can program it.
Some think it's mystical or spiritual. Many like the never ending
entertainment of Commodore games. There are several reasons.  Maybe it
just gets in the blood. Welcome and stay in here with us.

Hey Guys,

Can anyone tell me where I can get .d64 versions
of the SSI games 'Typhoon Of Steel' and 'Panzer Strike'
for C64?

(I've checked all the regular places I could find such as
arnold.hiof.no etc, my old disks have died, but I have PC emulators:
C64S and PC64)

I would really appreciate some help.

Work on Geos is already going on. Falk Rehwagen had a major revision
ready at around 70 percent, featuring a "big" listbox (without using a
REU), device drivers for all hardware parts (allowing better
expandability) and more. He had to leave the project but gave it to
another programmer (Wolfgang Grimm) so I expect un update to Geos 3.0
released some day. Before that, there will be updates to TopDesk 128
(first) and TopDesk 64 (after that) with many great enhancements.

After all, don`t forget the international programmers in your count,
there are a lot...

Well, that`s definitely not true. But beware of another copyright
discussion ;-) IMO most "serious" 64 fans will buy the original games
anyway, just to have handbooks and any gimmicks. Those 64 emulator users
won`t buy any real 64 game in any case ...

I snarfed up a free PET system that included a 2040-label
disk drive which reports DOS version 2.0.  What have I got
here?  Original 2040 (don't think so.)  4040 upgrade?
Some sort of intermediate OS release?  Any known problems
in this that later 4040 versions have fixed?

Also does anyone know anything about Microtech "Portmaker"
(a serial card) and "PETDisk II" (a disk I/O card with an
8" drive hanging off it)?  The system included these but
I have no idea how to use them.

Is there a VIC-20 emulator for a 286 IBM clone. Most emulators for
other systems need a 386 or faster, but i just don't Have one of those.

These cartridges exist, plus my opinions:

Epyx Fastload: The first and still the best. People complain
that it doesn't do enough. It loads plenty fine for me and I've
only found two programs in my library that don't like it. Includes
an MLM plus disk utilities and a disk editor.

Action Replay: A useful freezer cartridge. Dunno about its
compatibility though, but it's invaluable to hackers.

Mach: A fairly decent loader that never hit it big. A friend
of mine has one but he ventures no opinion.

Final Cartridge III: Nice GUI and BASIC enhancements;
includes a freezer utility. One problem is that it saves BASIC
programs in a format unreadable without the cartridge (grrr).
Try saving a long program, loading it back without the cartridge,
and see what you get. I guarantee you'll snap the case in half.
Another problem is that copy-protected programs object to its
presence (especially ones protected with V-MAX!).

JiffyDOS: This isn't a cartridge so it doesn't really count
but people swear by it. I've grown so used to Epyx FastLoad though
that I don't need it. Nice function keys though. :-)

Which ones did I forget? There's a number of software ones like
Kwik-Load! and Vorpal, too; Vorpal is dizzyingly fast but only works
on programs YOU create.

North Dallas Commodore User Group Meeting Announcement

The North Dallas Commodore User Group (NDCUG) is a club devoted to all
"Classic" Commodore computers including PET, Commodore 64/128, and other
8-bit machines.  If you have a Classic Commodore and are looking for supp=
ort,
Commodore conversation, the latest news and developments, or are just cur=
ious,
please drop by.  Our next meeting is scheduled to meet at the Plano Hagga=
rd
Public Library on Tuesday Aug 6 in the library's meeting room at 7:30pm.

This month promises to be a busy meeting.  NovaTerm 9.6 is now officially
available.  Unlike its predecessors, NovaTerm 9.6 is commercial only.  To=
 put
to rest the many rumors circulating, it is on disk, not cartridge.  One o=
f our
club members discovered a user group discount and went ahead and purchase=
d 10
copies of the software for 50% off SRP.  That means we have 9 copies to
distribute to club members for $15.  I'm sure much discussion will circul=
ate
among the club about NovaTerm's new features including new transfer modes=
 and
using C128 hardware such as the 80 column screen and 2MHz mode.  Initial =
trial
runs suggest NovaTerm can keep up with 19.2Kbaud ANSI much better than=20
Desterm.

We will also be continuing our "build your own SID cartridge" series.  La=
st
month, we drew the schematic on an DOS circuit CAD program.  This month, =
we
will construct the layout of the board and route the traces from the sche=
matic
using the same circuit CAD package.  If all goes well, next month we will
build it from scratch by etching the board, drilling the holes, and solde=
ring
the components into place.

The usual club equipment will be there (SX-64, 128D, CMD HD) plus a IBM
clone computer for the CAD work.  Please feel free to bring your own equi=
pment
if yours differs.  As usual, bring your thoughts, questions, and any uniq=
ue
toys to enlighten us.

Grab yourself a copy of Starcommander.  The entire package is acutally fo=

connecting a 1541 to a PC, but if you unzip the "starzip" file (I=20
think) there is also a zip/unziper for disk images.
