I haven't done an IDE, but have done several replacements in CMD
units.. Upgrading to a larger SCSI drive is just a matter of mounting
the new drive (usually the mounting screws are in the standard
positions), and plugging the SCSI cable and the power connector into
the new drive's connectors. Couldn't be easier.
Two things to be aware of are: 1) That the replacement drive has the
SCSI terminator resistors installed (those multi-pin things that are
plugged into the drive's circuit board right near the SCSI connector) -
generally there's three of them. 2) Jumpers on the drive should be
set for SCSI device '0'. If it/they aren't, when you run the llformat
prg, you will see that it won't detect device zero when it scans for
it. You need it as device zero, as that's the device where the system
will want to be created. Some drives have another jumper on-board
which is used to set operating mode (or somesuch). If that isn't in
the right position, then drive won't spin when powered-up. ..so those
are pretty straightforward.
One more point is that I understand that upgrading to some larger
drives / or brands of drives (I'm thinking specifically of IBM brand
here) may necessitate an upgrade to the latest DOS, plus an upgraded
boot ROM. I recently upgraded my HD-40 (had Quantum drive) to a 240
meg Quantum. No additionals needed. I am now upgrading a friend's
HD-20.. It originally had a Seagate mech (yecchh), was upped to a 70
Meg Rodime (yecchh), and now going to a 200 Meg IBM. Looks like the
latest upgrade requires the latest HDOS (v1.92) and boot ROM (2.78)
(just got them in, and I'll probably do it tomorrow)
I'm partial (in my limited experience) to Quantum.. I didn't care for
what I saw of the Seagate, or what I've read at other times. This
isn't to say whether Maxtor or Conner are great (maybe?), good, ok,
etc. I just don't have experience with them.
Regards,
Robert

An incorrect generalization, but then, most are.

Incorrect as well. There's all kinds of software available for sale that
is still unopened and unused.

While there are relatively few programmers still collecting royalties on =
a
lot of the new packages stocked by the last remaining few distributors,
they indeed were paid for it at some point (whenever the distributor sold
it). So yes, in most cases you this no longer deprives the author... just
us poor sucker distributors who thought we were doing folks a favor by
buying up what was left and keeping it legally available. And because
games in general are so easy to get for free now, those few new titles
that have been released in the last couple of years don't sell enough to
make it worth even writing, let alone distributing. I guess we should
thank the pirates for doing us these favors.

Hello,
I have a very nice Commodore 64C I would like to sell.
it has the following:
- 1764 256K Ram expansion and Deluxe C=3D64 Powersupply with=20
included software to patch GEOS as a RAM disk. (this is
new and still in orginal box)
- 1541 floppy drive
- MPS 801 Printer
- Joystick
-(also small joystick that is on the side of the computer
for GEOS)
-All necessary cables included to hook up the system, and some
extra cables too.
-2 extra power supplys (1 C64 white, 1 regular black)
-Fastload cartridge
and at least 50 probably more like 70 titles with orginal
documentation (I will list them if necessary)
I have tested the computer recently (today) and it worked fine.
it is in very good shape and has been well taken care of.
I think about 60.00 for all plus shipping sounds good. If
not, make an offer, I really don't know what it is worth
now. =20
Thanks
Dale

Hello
While attempting to figure out how the 1581 computes its CRC's, I bumped =
into
the necessity to disassemble code to disk so that I could transfer it to
my amiga. Here's how I did it, using Super Snapshot V5's ml monitor.
First I loaded the code into the c64's memory
then, from basic, I opened a file like this:
open 1,8,2,"0:code.txt,s,w"
after that, I hit F8 to start the monitor up, and then typed
o8,1
to redirect the output to the disk drive. Then
d c000 c0f0
to disassemble, then
o
to go back to screen output, then
x
to leave the monitor, and finally, from BASIC
close 2
The SS manual only gives an example for printer output, so I tought I'd p=
ost
about this. Anyway, hope you find a use for it :-)

The C-64 had for the longest time a huge chunk of the personal computer
market. But, people still do not expect any type of come back for the
commodore 64 as a business machine nor do they expect any huge jump
in quality of the games produced for the C-64 to change. No, the
chip probably won't change anything.
What does the C-64 need to revitalize its missing link in time? It needs
not to try to compete but only to become compatable. The wide variety
of emulators currently being produced has greatly helped but programming
on an emulator is to be simply put, 'anal'. No, what we need is a
Commodore 64 PC card in which would contain all the Commodore chips
"minimal cost at best" and a quality peice of software to work with
the hardware to emulate exactly how a commodore would work. The
cost of producing such a card would be probably just a few dollars if tha=
t,
and all that would be left would be for the last of us C-64 guru's to
write the software.

Can somebody please tell me what electronics is between

I have no sound on my C64, and I'm wondering if it is

(unfortunately) this is the truth! I truely enjoy everything available
for the C64 now, but I do not plan on staying on it forever. If there wa=
s
still a big market I would most certainly do so, but alas, as with most
people, the demise of Run took some wind out of my sails - althought I am
STILL very MUCH a commie....
But the real reason I am writing is COMPATIBILITY. There has GOT to be a
patch of some sort for Word or WP that will sucessfully import a C=3D wor=
d
processing file - INCLUDING FORMATTING (e.g. bold, italics, etc.). Does
anyone know where?
What I want to do is to be able to convert a Word file into a C=3D
compatible file, bring it home, edit it, save it, take it back to work,
and open it back up in Word, and have all of the editing, formatting etc
that I did on the C=3D be there.
Please Please help! If something like this does NOT exist, why not? :-)
I guess it could even go the other way - a patch for the C=3D to open and
save in a Word file format (text grabber in GEOS?).
I would be willing to PAY for this ability. :-)
THanks for your input!

Hi Mike
I hope this reply is not over late, Ive just checked the posts.
Set the dip switches at the back of the drive in the following
manner.
Device 8 9 10 11
SW1 on off on off
sw2 on on off off
This should do the trick for you.
RSVP the result.

There are emulators for the IBM that run c64, but I dont know about 128.
you can get c64s11bd.zip from oak.oakland.edu
/pub/simtelnet/msdos/emulate
I think there are others, but this seems to be the newest.
you can do searches on www.shareware.com=20

Has anyone ever gotten Monthly Calendar (March 1989, Gazette) to work
with
either a Super-G or Super Graphix Jr. interface? I found a thing in
Gazette
saying that it would not work with some interfaces and 1525 compatible
printers. Did they ever fix it to work with the interfaces I mentioned
above?
Also, does anyone have Hanger 14 (Jan. 1987, Ahoy!)? I can't figure
out
what that thing that goes up and down on level 3 is suppose to do to you.=
=20
Is
it suppose to crush you or something?
Finally, does anyone have the correction for F/X Plot 128 (June 1992,
Gazette)? Line 920 tells the program to goto line 170. However there is
no
line 170. Can anyone post the correction here?

You have said my comment about software being used is incorrect, but then=
=20
you stated my point exactly. Whether or not it is unopened and unused, No=
=20
programmer is waiting for it to sell in order to collect on it. It has al=
l=20
been sold long ago and they have collected anything that is going to be=20
collected. If you are selling software that is no longer being produced=20
then you need not worry about piracy because your supply is limited to a=20
certain amount. You are no longer trying to sell as many copies as you ca=
n=20
because you cannot make more than you have. You need only worry about=20
marketing it in order to sell the copies you have available. Contrary to=20
the beleif of a lot the programmers in this newsgroup someone who has=20
copied a program probably would not have bought it if they could not have=
=20
copied it.=20
Anyway, sure piracy is illegal. Im not questioning that. However I dont=20
think it is affecting anyone in the commodore world in the manner it is=20
always stated. At any rate it makes little difference to me, as my=20
commodores are usually boxed up and used rarely. I just follow the c=3D f=
or=20
nostalgias sake. Also I BOUGHT all this software for it when I used it a=20
lot and I cant bare getting rid of it. =20

Hi Brain@mail.Msen.Com,
BC> Therefore, I suggest that others consider the notion of creating
BC> comp.sys.cbm.forsale.
I don't see the reason personally. I have more interest in for sale ads
than I do talk about games, but that does not mean I want separate
news groups for every topic. I find it easy enough to skip or at least
scan the messages when they really don't interest me, but you never
know when you will learn something from those almost skipped messages.
I know it can be annoying when people try and make a business of the
for sale stuff and run constant ads, but it is also easy to skip the
messages after the first time or two.

This is a question that gets asked=20
and answered a lot. There are mamy
sequential reader programs out there
including Big Red Reader, metabasic
and others. Here is the simplest
program I can think of to read a
sequential file.
=20
10 open8,8,8,"filename,s,r"
20 get#8,a$
30 print a$;
40 if st=3D0 then 20
50 close8=20
There are several ways sequential files
are used so reading them can be tricky.
If the file was created by a word=20
processing program, chances are it uses
a variation of Commodore Screen Ascii.
The characters are poked directly to the=20
screen. Some of that data will include
formatting symbols specific to that
writer.
The file might be in Commodore ASCII in
which case it is pretty easy to read.
The following program ought to read it=20
although I just now threw this together
in response to your question and didn't
spend much time checking it for bugs.
(I did test it)
If the file was saved in true ASCII or=20
other format, a converter program will
have to be used to read it.
I wrote a little program which reads=20
the ascii screen file (the kind Word
Writer-Timeworks uses) but I didn't=20
include it here as I'm not sure what
kind of stuff you're trying to read.
This is for C=3D64. The spaces are=20
just for readability and can be=20
eliminated.
