I don't think that's necessarily true, Richard. If I recall, CMD used to
make an interface called Lt. Commander that allow the user of a Lt. Kerna=
l
to hook up to a CMD hard-drive. I haven't seen that interface advertised
for a while, so you could check with CMD to see if it is still available.

BeckerBasic was a very well-designed programming language. I never
encountered any bugs while using it. It did have one problem and
that was memory. The interpreter was a hog and thus no complex
projects could be done in it unless you wanted to overlay everything
in (which would take forever to load, since Becker didn't directly
support geoTurboLoad.)

YES, there are probably newsgroups with more mail but *I* don't want this=

Your second argument is the worse one I know - Is it really THAT hard to

Here's my thoughts, and perhaps they're a little idealistic, but such is
life.

They should definitely sell it to CMD.  CMD has proven to be supporters o=
f
the C64/128 family and I expect them to continue well into the next
century.  Visicorp may move on to bigger and better things and leave us
behind.  Also, CMD has the expertise in dealing with the 64/128.

Whoever ends up with it should *definitely* manufacture replacement
parts, especially VICII's and SID's.

As for manufacturing, I'd like to see an improved version of the C64 or
128 made.  This is where the idealism sets in.  How about getting the
kinks out of the C65, and updating it for the 90's with great graphics,
a 20mhz (or more!) CPU, more memory, and a tower case.  Then, update
the UART to a modern speed, maybe with a FIFO buffer.  This would be the
best of both worlds since it would be a great internet tool as well as be=
ing
able to run C64 software.  I can also see a built-in 1581 and 1571 or
their high-density equivalents.  I'm not sure how much this would
cost, but I can see it for less than $1000.  With a computer that cheap
that hooks directly to your TV, you not only have a new C64, but you
have a "net-computer", a low-cost workstation, a video game system,
and a home computer rolled into one.

I'm sure Mr. and Mrs. Consumer aren't ready to shell out their money
for something that doesn't run Win95, but with maybe an updated
"GEOS 3.0" or "GEOS97" it could run circles around a PC.  And as
the final kicker, make it able to read/write DOS disks so people who
bring their work home can do so on their Commod...er, CMD64 :)

Being mentioned in the latest Commodore Hacking for my toolslist, cheered=
 me up
:-)

For this reason I actually let the list take some serious beating, by upd=
ating
it quite a lot! I have been digging through ftp.funet.fi for files I was =
missing
and found surprisingly many. I have added the files found and entered
information on most places, but I'm not sure I got all links right quite =
yet.

If you still want to take a look at how it looks today, a preliminary ver=

This is the list of FTP sites containing software and programs
specific to the Commodore 64 and 128 computers, and one Vic20 site,
as well as one for the PET.  When available URL addresses are also
listed, for alternate access.

I will try to keep this list as current and accurate as possible, so
that it can be a useful resource for users of the newsgroup.

PLEASE cooperate and send E-mail with any corrections and updates.  If
you uncover a site not listed, tell me so that it can be added.  If a
site has closed or no longer carries CBM software, let me know and it
will be deleted.

To use this list on a UNIX system, just type 'ftp <sitename>', where
<sitename> is any of the Host or FTP sites listed below.  Use 'anonymous'
as your login, and your E-mail address for the password.  You can change
and list directories with 'cd' and 'dir', respectively, and download
files to your system using 'get'.  Be sure to specify either 'binary'
if you are getting a program, or 'ascii' for a text file before you
begin the download.

are hundreds of other FTP sites on INet with interesting files covering
most every other topic imaginable.  Take some time to seek out and
