I've recently asked Mr. Butterfield about the infamous WAIT6502,x command
used in early PETs. His response follows, in which I think gives a defini=
tive
answer to the WAIT6502,x question.

Of course, I'm still looking for any legal information involving CBM.

True.  They paid a flat fee for unlimited usage.  Microsoft thought that=20
was a great deal .. until, later, they made royalty deals.

Not true of that time frame.  Commodore paid Microsoft an additional fee=20
to write a revision to the original Basic that they had bought.  Among=20
other things, spaces-in-keywords were changed, zero page shifted around,=20
and (unknown to Commodore) the WAIT 6502,x joke was inserted.

As it happened, I was the person to show this WAIT feature to Len Tramiel=
=20
of Commodore engineering.  He was furious at Microsoft:  "We're very=20
short of ROM memory, and they do THAT do us!"

All subsequent revisions of Basic were done by Commodore personnel.

As an afterthought, Microsoft would have liked to see their name come up=20
on the screen.  But it wasn't in the contract (and Apple, later,=20
introduced "Applesoft Basic", another Microsoft rename.

Microsoft subsequently become quite fussy about disclosure.  Commodore=20
was enjoined to never reveal a single byte of the Basic interpreter code=20
(and Commodore employees were so cautioned on many occasions).  But the=20
user groups sorted most of that out.

I don't think that is possible.  As far as I know, comp.binaries is a
moderated group with no moderator.  So it is completely dysfunctional
and useless at the moment.  Any other ideas?

Comp.binaries.cbm is moderated, and it *does* have a moderator.  In
fact it has several moderators, who receive as e-mail every message
that is posted there.  I am the head moderator, so I can say with
certainty that it is neither dysfunctional nor useless.

Three files containing Jim Butterfield ML utilities just went out
today.  We have received very few approvable submissions; the few that
have been sent have turned out to be either restricted by copyright,
not Commodore software at all (we got a couple JPG's), or impossible
to decode, run, or both.

I am working on revising the FAQ files, and determining what formats
should be used in postings (SFX, D64, etc.).  Anyone with opinions on
this is requested to send me e-mail and let me know what you think.

Hiya all... problem printer time <<joy>>. OK situation is: Star printer,
NX 1000C <<64/128 plug in variety>> powers up, ie lights come on, but no
one home. The print head doesnt even move around like on normal printers.
Also when hooked up to either a 64 or 128, it locks up the serial bus. ie
none of the disk drives attached to that machine work until the printer i=
s
removed or turned off.

I get told that it will cost mega-bux to get repaired, but if its only a
simple-ish problem, then maybe I can do it myself?

Any ideas? <<however far fetched :-) >>

This is an update of my earlier auction announcement, including the
bids that have been received so far.

I have been going through all my Commodore stuff that I have collected
and have compiled this list of items for sale.  The format will be a
public auction.  Send all bids to me in electronic mail to
[e-mail].  I will try to set up a WWW interface to submit
bids and check on the current highest bid, but for now stick to
e-mail.  I will post progress reports approximately every week to
report the current bidding status.

                        RULES OF THE AUCTION

  - SUGGESTED BID IS *NOT* A MINIMUM BID; I will accept the highest
    bid over that amount, or if all bids are below it, I *may* choose
    to accept the highest bid.  If you think my prices are too high;
    bid anyway, and you might just get it after all.  However there is
    a MINIMUM PURCHASE OF $10, just to make it worth my time to
    package and mail.
  - Bidding runs UNTIL ALL ITEMS ARE SOLD, OR AUGUST 1ST, 1996,
    whichever is soonest.  I may elect to extend the bidding period,
    add or remove items available, and/or change suggested bids after
    that date.
  - YOU WILL PAY ALL SHIPPING COSTS.  Shipping cost depends on method
    of shipment, weight of what you buy, and your location.  If you
    live in or near the San Francisco or Monterey bay areas in

Ed, hard drives have been around for the C-64/128 for quite some time. Th=

first ones were the Lt. Kernal by Xetec and were around before the compan=
y
that produced them folded.

Currently, hard drives are being produced by Creative Micro Design with
the smallest one starting at 40 meg and the largest at 2 gigabytes. The
nice thing about the CMD HDs is that they have the SCSI interface which
enables the C-64/128 user to daisy chain his or her HD to another
non-Commodore compatible HD, CD-ROM or tape drive.

The 1581 is a floppy disk drive that uses 3.5-inch disks and at first, it
seemed to feel like a hard drive because of the amount of data that could
be stored on it at that time.

Bo, General Media Services (which owned Omni and Penthouse magazines)
still retain the rights to the old Compute Gazette and its software. When
Ziff Davis purchased the regular Compute magazine and killed it in favor
of its own PC related magazines, the fate of the Gazette was left up in
the air as Ziff Davis was not interested in Commodore computers.

So, when the Gazette disk started to fold, the editor, Tom Netsel, spread
the word that they were giving away old and new Gazette software disks.
The last I heard was that Tom was working for AOL and the Compute Gazette
passed into oblivion.

I doubt that anything is left with General Media in regards to the Gazett=
e
as they even failed to refund the readers and when I inquired about this
nobody bother with responding by either telephone or registered mail.
