- I considered it, but the amount of work to scan them all in (just the

- Hello all Commodore 64-gamers out there.
-
- I guess most of you remember Archon and Archon II - Adept from
- Electronic Arts back in the 80s. I certainly do, and I still
- have copies of these for my old 64.
-
- Anyhow, I have a vague memory of an Archon III too, released
- sometime late 1984 to early 1986. I can't remember what this
- game was called, but I think it was something on "G".
-
- Neither I can recall what the game play was like, as I never
- really played it, but only saw it running. The thing was my
- brother got a tape of games, among them was this one, and he
- accidently recorded other software onto this tape before he
- had taken a backup on it.
-
- Why I think this game was another sequel to Archon is that
- I think it was a Free Fall production, and it had the same
- size of screen (and possibly board) as Archon and Adept.
-
- I've looked in game directories, asked software houses but
- without any result. I haven't found Free Fall yet, and I
- haven't asked EA either, but I guess that's not worth it.
- In the worst case, it might have been a totally different
- game than the one I think of.
-
- If anybody can tell whether such a game existed or not,
- and what it's name was if it did, I'd be very happy!
-
- Sincerely

- -------------------------------------------------------------------------=
- -
- I would suggest that you do not include binaries with C=3DHacking. The re=
- ason
- is that I print them out. I'm sure other readers print them out. I often
- have to strip out the binaries to get printable text.
-
- Secondly, C=3DHacking was a combination file of text and binary. Maybe th=
- at
- Net Cop was only referring to binaries only. Did he send you an email
- personally? If so, and you feel that C=3DHacking must continue with the
- binaries, then get the readers of comp.sys.cbm's support to make a limite=
- d
- exception.
-
- Another alternative is to assume the role as a moderator of the comp.sys.
- binaries. That way, you also control the distribution channel, just like
- CBM acquiring MOS technologies for vertical integration. ;)
-
- Todd
- -------------------------------------------------------------------------=
- -
- Larry Haynes also quoted thusly:
- -------------------------------------------------------------------------=
- -
- If the problem is strictly the uuencoded portions, leave the mag as is
- and post the uuencoded portions to comp.binaries.cbm. It is still=20
- available, supposidly moderated, and rarely used.
- -------------------------------------------------------------------------=
- -
- And Nick Bensema replied to Todd's Post and Mine:
- -------------------------------------------------------------------------=
- -
- It would be best to place the binaries on an ftp site somewhere and put a
- link to them in C=3D Hacking, which allows those with Netscape to get to
- them easily and those with knowledge of mail-to-FTP gateways to be able
- to get them if they don't have access, and those who print them out to ge=
- t
- them if they do.
- -------------------------------------------------------------------------=
- -
- R Cunningham followed up:
- -------------------------------------------------------------------------=
- -
- Jim, I think either you misunderstood what was being reported, or the
- sender is not stating the facts correctly. He states binary postings
- (MIME, UUENCODE, etc.). The FAQ itself is not binary in nature, only som=
- e
- of the included programs. I think they are checking the size of the post=
- s
- and assuming binaries without checking the content. I am going to addres=
- s
- this issue in particular to the net abuse cronies.=20
- -------------------------------------------------------------------------=
- -
- and then followed up to his follow up:
- -------------------------------------------------------------------------=
- -
- You already know my thoughts. I say do whatever is easiest for you to do=
- .=20
- I know that it's very time consuming to do the regular postings that you
- do. And we ALL appreciate it!=20
- -------------------------------------------------------------------------=
- -
-
- To Bill Ward:
-
- Commodore Hacking has always contained uuencoded binaries, since Issue 2,=
- =20
- I believe. The entire magazine, including uuencoded binaries, has always
- been posted...
-
- The cancelbot cancels any msg that is over 100000 bytes AND contains a=20
- binary greater than, say 50 lines of text. Thus, it caught the magazine.
-
- I have made contact with the 'bot admin and he has offered to exclude the
- magazine from being cancelled. However, I asked him to hold off as I try
- to determine the wants of the group (the gracious and powerless non-
- moderator of this groups that I am...) If many really would rather the
- mag not be posted, then I say let's take that route. It's really no easi=
- er
- for me to post it then not, as it takes 30 senconds....
-
- To Todd Elliott:
-
- I understand the concern you and others share in trying to print out
- C=3DHacking and having to strip the bins. However, the reason the bins a=
- re=20
- included is to make distribution and the copyright issue foolproof. If
- the bins were separated, I would then be forced to send copies of the bin=
- s to
- people who read the issue from LOADSTAR or some other third-party distrib=
- ution
- that did not include the bins (lazy, misread, or otherwise...) Therefore=
- ,
- it would make my life harder if the two were separated.
-
- However, to help you out, the entire magazine is going to be available on
- my Internet site as a collection of text files and the bins (not encoded)
- in a zip file. doing a print *.txt (or equivalent on the Commodore) on t=
- his
- archive after decompressing would yield the results you are looking for. =
- In
- fact, i could create a simple BASIC file that rpints out the issue in its
- correct format. Would that help?
-
- As to making an exception, such is easily performed. The admin has alrea=
- dy
- offered to make an exception for the Commodore Hacking magazine. I am si=
- mply
- holding off on asking for it.
-
- As to the comp.binaries.cbm moderation, thanks but no thanks. I have=20
- enough on my plate....
-
- To Larry Haynes:
-
- As I stated above to Todd, splitting the magazine into two parts would ma=
- ke it
- harder to distribute and more prone to being partially distributed. The
- extra folks asking for bins from me would sap extra time away from my=20
- endevors. I won't asay I won't pursue this, but it'll have to be thought=
- on.
-
- To Nick Bensema:
-
- Each issue of C=3DHacking is available at http://www.msen.com/~brain/chac=
- king/
- in addition to the text version, an HTML version is avaulable. Also,=20
- each bin is available at http://www.msen.com/~brain/pub/XXXX, where XXXX =
- is
- the name of the bin you want. The files are also available on the Hackin=
- g
- MAILSERV, for those with email only. So, in essence, I already make them
- available via alternate means.
-
- To: R Cunningham:
-
- I was not referring to the FAQ, but the magazine. As stated above , both
- the size and the fact that a uuencoded binary was included triggered the
- system.
-
- As to your second post, I do want to minimize my effort in this matter, b=
- ut
- I am willing to put exra effortin to implement these suggestions if the
- groups so requests. Also, there is no mandate that I post the magazine
- in the USENET newsgroup. In fact, I am leaning toward merely posting a
- "pointer" to the magazine.... Dunno though. I appreciate the commendatio=
- ns.
- Asking in here is my way of being a good "netizen".
-
- To all:
-
- I have a couple of options, listed below: They are ranked in order that
- I would like you to consider them:
-
- ---------------------------------------
-
- a) 1 Request an exclusion for the magazine.
- b) 1 post only a pointer to the magazine in the newsgroup, and put the m=
- ag
- elsewhere.
-
- c) 2 Post the magazine, but strip the uuencoded bins from the issue.
- =20
- --------------------------------------
-
- If it is important that you receive the mag via USENET, vote for a or c.
- If you feel the 190-280 kB file is is simply too big for a posting, bins
- or not, vote for b.
-
- Let me know at some point, since you can;t get mad at me later on if you
- didn't give your opinion at this time.....
-
- Above all, don't be too hard on the 'bot admin.... Yes, this time, it
- canceled a non-spam article that some may have wanted to read.... Howeve=
- r,
- I have seen a bunch of stuff that shows up in here that you all never see=
