Boy! This one is almost worthy of a MOST ASKED QUESTIONS status.
Seriously- It seems I see alot of these situations where a c64
powered on after months/years of storage is all of the sudden
dead...  What gives?  does the lonlyness kill it or is there some
scientific explaination for this recurring phenomenon?

The only program I ever saw that did anything unusual with the cassette
port was called SPEECH-64.  It would digitize audio from a cassette
tape when played through a dataset...  If anyone has this program,
please mail it to me as it is hard to find and my only copy was on the
disk that my dog ate...  Thanks-

I appreciate your comments and suggestions.  However, my decision not to
buy more programs or dongles is based on my own belief that no one should
have to buy more than one copy of any program.  Let's get real.  If I
wanted to pirate a copy of a program, I most definitely could...but never
do.  I have two residences.  One in Barstow, CA and one in Phoenix, AZ.
When I make trips back and forth, I have to take the dongle with me.  I
forgot to last time and spent a week unable to do what I desired to
do...simply because of that stupid dongle.

I agree, a dongle is better than disk copy protection.  I prefer it.  In
fact, I never considered having more than one copy until my current
situation came up.  I agree that most people will not fall in this category
at all.

Although there are many commercial programs being illegally distributed,
I'm not one that does it.  Look at all the emulator programs.  Do not
classify me with those people.

If you are using the single cable RF setup to go to your TV set, try adjusting
the
following screws:
              out

Adjust the ones with stars.  The prescise locations aren't perfect, but it is
the
top-right two ones that fix audio out.  WARNING:  I do this on NTSC machines!
It might
not work in Europe!

The new style C's have a fuse (euro machines use a 2amp slow blow) on
the board to control SID and the tape port.  I'm not sure if the user
port is tied thru the same fuse but check it and see...

Well, I also own a copy of CKIT 94. But, when I moved from Miami to
Baltimore, the dongle was lost. Now, I have the diskettes, manuals, etc., but
I am unable to run the program at all.

If I had the knowledge, I'd go into the program and remove the security
check myself.  Unfortunately, I do not.  But, I see your point.  Gawd, I
hope I never lose my dongle.

Thanks to all who responded to my questions about the SCSI ZIP drive
and Syquest EZ135.  I especially want to thank Mike Neus who also sent
e-mail.  (I don't get all the messages posted to comp.sys.cbm.)

I found the following response confusing, although it was the only one
I saw that addressed this question.

The ZIP drive was developed by the IOMEGA company- the same who made
famous Bernolli <sp> drive.  I assume they drew from that research when
making the ZIP drive because the media is thin (like a floppy disk).
Contrast the SyQuest, these cartridges are more like hard drive platters
platters but the hard drive midia is contained within a "sturdy"-
ahem... cartruidge that allows it to be poped out... While this is a
novel aproach, it has many disadvantages, the most noticable of which
is how fragle the mechanism is... Also, Zip drives and loud and get
quite hot (cause of the power required to spin the huge platter...)
all this is contrast the ZIP drive, anyway...

I'll say again that my main interest is in archival backup of files
to/from a CMD HD.  Ideally this would probably be an external SCSI tape
backup unit.  Unfortunatly I am not aware of any sofware to use these
with a CMD HD.  The largest partition supported by the CMD HD is 16M so
any removable media larger than 16M would be sufficient.  A 1 gig (or
so) JAZZ drive would be overkill and much more expensive than the ZIP.
My CMD HD is only 40M.  The most cost effective way to expand the
drive is to install a larger SCSI HD mechanism.  The ZIP or EZ135
solition is an interesting solution for both backup and expansion
(which I don't need) at a reasonable cost.

Currently the EZ135 now at $120 (down from $130 last week) seems to be
the best drive, although the ZIP now reportedly at $150 is also a good
drive.  I am most concerned about the long term avalability of the
drives and media.  It was suggested that I wait for a new LS-120 (120
Meg 3.5" floppy!) drive.  However, these may be more expensive than the
others and I question whether they would be available in the older slow
SCSI-2 type that works best with the CMD HD.

[It was suggested that CMD might produce a LS-120 drive.  I think this
is unlikely.  Besides CMD is working hard on the Super64/128 CPUs and
has put other projects on the back burner.  I had heard a rumor that
they were developing a lower cost 3.5" HD floppy drive.]

At least two people said that the ZIP drive is much more popular than
the EZ135 and that the EZ135 might soon be discontinued.  If I had to
buy today, I think I would chose the ZIP drive.  However, as the game
is minimizing risks of HD crash and choice of back up media rather than
a NEED, I am going to wait and see what happens.

Finally, someone asked me about using the CD-ROM drive.  I'm not aware
of any C64 software.  I'm using a 128 with a CMD HD and the German
software that can be found on ccnga.uwaterloo.ca  .../util128

neat idea... but is it possible to send signals with the joystick
ports as well? does setting the ddr and STA:ing to $dc00 actually
work?

I recently got a 1571 and I can't insert the head viberaton card into the
drive.  I goes in untill it hits and then it sticks out about 1 inch out
of the drive!  I did not get the card with it, but it is an orignal card
I got from someware.  So I took it appart and found the card hitting some
little palastic part (and not it is not a head) just off center and to
the left.  It looks like a long toothpick, except on the back end it gets
thicker and almost touches the top of the head rails.  And sugestions on
what this is, and should it be in that possition or should it be
adjusted?  And if it is supose to be there, it this a later model of 71
and this was added after the other 71 I have?  Thanks.

Are you sure it isn't an NX-1000C ? Sounds more like it.
Ribbons are available from several sources. You could even try
Radio Shack. They had a "sidewalk sale" here recently and I
bought a ribbon for the  Star NX-1000 series printers for
$1.98. Of course that was just black.
