Anyone know if there is a disk/tape drive emulation program for the
PC(linux/dos/windows)?  I think it would be useful to use the PC as a
floppy/tape drive and connect it to a C64/C128 via the PC's parallel
port.  This way you can use disk/tape images on a real C64 without
having use a real 1541/datasette.

If there is such a program, please tell me where and how to make a
cable.

Has anyone played with using the cassette port as an i/o point OTHER
than the obvious use of the door stop/datassette player?  I am looking
for a means of communicating between 2/more C64/128's without using
the USER/EXPANSION ports.

Four ways.  One:  Hook up a modem to your C64 and one to the IBM and upload
the files.  Two: Build an X1541 cable and use StarCommander or some other such
program.  Three: modify your 1541 to read/write MFM disks.  Four: buy a
1571/1581 or FD drive and use Big Blue Reader.

There are 2 ways to connect a 1702 monitor.  You can get a 5 pin DIN to 2 RCA
plugs.  These will plug into the two plugs on the front of the monitor.
Better though is an 8 pin DIN to three RCA which plugs into the back, it has
seperate LUMA/CHROMA  giving a much sharper picture.  If you have problems
finding one, I know where there is one available around here.  Don't remember
the cost, and I'm not sure what shipping will be, especially to Canada.

If you want some answers you will need to provide more info.
1/ Are downloading from a BBS or an FTP site.?
2/ If an FTP site are you running from a Unix Dos Shell account?
3/ Are you downloading as a text file or binary download?
4/ What term program are you using for 64 or 128 and if a 128 is it in 64
mode?

Are you looking for a viewer? and what graphics format do you need? If you
are referring to Godot (CMD) that is really a graphics converter utility,
but can be used for a viewer, but is really a 64 program, not a 128.

I think this has to be a leg stretcher, alrighty. I was chatting to

This is not true!  Have you taken a look at the $DD00 register's usage?
The lower bits are NOT zero!  If they were, then you could easily use
the ORA instruction instead of the more cryptic EOR.

In particular, the last two bits are VIC memory bank select, and are not
necessarily zero if you want to maintain the screen display while fast-
loading.

However, because of the principles of the exclusive-or operation, you
CAN compensate for the process by right shifting and EOR-ing the initial
value of $DD00, and then using that as the starting value instead of
LDA #$00 at the beginning of the loop.  My own fast-loader uses this
technique, in fact; the $00 is in fact self-modified by some earlier
code when the fast-loader is initialized.  :)

You probably have not used JDOS.  It is a replacement ROM, and thus the
fastloader cannot be reset to a slower one, because there isn't a slower
one.  The stock, default loader is the fast-loader.  I love it.  :)

Well, it's hard, but you gotta face the fact... But believe me, those
few bits are heavily compressed and expand to about 7 gigabyte of
behaviour determination. I know, because i had to rent a cray 3 for a
week to find out.

ever professed to work for CMD although I have purchased a lot from them

Whether I agree with that assessment or not depends on the time frame for
a "fad". In the world of computers, even many "standards" are fads, if
not being a fad requires being around for 10 years. After all, the 1.44meg
floppy drive standard on PC's is less than 10 years old (and yet, oddly,
has lasted longer than the 5.25" 360K & 1.2meg "standards" put together).
In my mind, computer "fads" have a much shorter lifetime, on the order of
less than a year. Given that definition, I would say the Zip drive is not
a fad. I expect it will be around for a few years as a mainstream
market item, and depending on how extensible the format is, and how low
Iomega (and others) can get the cost of manufacture, perhaps even to the
end of the millenium.

The LS-120 you speak of is literally an update on the old Insite floptical
drive technology (not a bad idea in itself, just too little too late, and
at too high a price). Although the capacity, and very likely, the data
transfer rate is greater than the old flopticals, it still shares the
problem of price. As I understand it, if you want to add the LS-120 to an
existing computer, Compaq will sell you one for about $200...about the
same price as a ZIP. While the capacity is 20% greater for the LS-120,
the fact that the ZIP has outsold the 135meg Syquest EZDrive shows that
capacity is not everything. With a standard 1.44meg floppy mechanism
available for about $30, I doubt the ability to read/write 3.5" floppies
will be a big selling point, and that it will be primarily judged as
a ZIP competitor. (I do, however, like the fact that it can read/write
floppies at about 3x normal speed...like the old flopticals could).

From what I have been able to find out, the LS-120 uses an IDE interface,
so unless something changes, this alone takes it off the option list for
any Commodore 8-bit user.

With ZIP media already available from other companies (I've seen Fuji
ZIP disks at several local stores), and the drives themselves due from
other companies, it looks like the ZIP drive is already well on the road
to becoming a "standard", which makes for another uphill battle for the
LS-120.

As to the Syquest EZ135, I believe the low price you are seeing is a
closeout price (that also has the side effect of making it more
competitive with the ZIP), as Syquest is coming out with the $299 EZFlyer
(230meg capacity), which unlike the EZ135, has a simple one-button eject
system. I strongly suspect the EZ135 will disappear from the market once
the current stocks are depleted.

Given that the carts are to be priced at only about 50% more than the
EZ135 for an additional 100megs capacity, the cost per megabyte for media
is also lower. For applications for which 100megs per cart for a ZIP
drive is too small or slow, and the cost of a Iomega Jaz drive and media
is too great, this puts the EZFlyer at a greater advantage than the
EZ135 was.

Iomega, however, has apparently cut the price on their 1gig Jaz drive to
about $399 for the internal version, $499 for the external. Syquest's
large capacity removable, the 1.3gig SyJet, apparently still has not
shipped.

I believe you also commented about the connectors on the ZIP and EZ-135.
Both drives have two connectors to support SCSI daisy chaining. The ZIP,
of course, uses two DB-25's, while I understand the external SCSI version
of the EZ-135 uses two Centronics-50 connectors.

I have a 128 flat, and it is socketed. It is located in the metal can
where the VIC chip is. I believe it is in the compatment to the right. It
had two smaller chips beside it (16 pins: 8/8). Those are the VRAM. Those
are soldered in and INSANELY hard to remove... even with a solder sucker.
I did it. Cursed a lot too.... :)

Thanks for the suggestion, but I don't do BBS's; haven't for years... and in
any event I don't know of ANY Commodore BBS's still up, certainly none in my
local calling area!   :(

You just need a cable with a DIN plug on one end and RCA plugs on the
other.  The present owner of the 1702 will probably have one unless he/she
was using the monitor with a VCR.

Hi,
I have an almost complete Commodore 128 system for which I no
longer have a use and would like to pass it on to someone who would find
it useful.  Although I would like to donate this equipment to an
organization that wants it, I would also consider giving it to an
individual.  In either case, I am either looking for someone who is local
to Berkeley, Ca or is willing to pay for the shipping of the equipment.
I would like to give all of this equipment to one party, if possible.
The equipment I have available is:

1 Commodore 128 CPU
1 1902 Monitor
1 1571 disk drive (may be broken)
1 1581 3.5" disk drive
1 okidata okimate 20 color printer (with 1 cartridge)
1 9 pin Epson printer (if you want it.... if not, I understand)

Bitmaps...hmmm...How about I-Paint or BASIC-8's paint program.  I think CMD
sells those too.  And they ARE for the 128's 80 column mode.

If you downloaded it from an FTP site, try doing it again - making sure the
transfer is binary not text.  If you downloaded from the WWW, make sure it
saved as a binary file (with Netscape, that's right click, save file as).
If text characters in a message appeared, it came across as text and will
definitely NOT work.

On the other hand, if you downloaded it from a BBS, check and make sure you
didn't use XModem.  XModem has been notorious for causing problems with
it's padding.
