  Hi there.

  I have a number of word processing files on a Commodore 64
that I'd like to convert into an IBM format. I still own a=20
64 and 1541 disk drive.  What would be the best way to transfer
the files? (If necessary, I can turn the 64 files into ascii
format so I'm mainly concerned with getting files from the 64
to the IBM rather than transferring from a specific word=20
processor program).

 =20
  If anyone knows the best way to do this, I'd welcome the=20
advice. Please respond by e-mail as I don't get on this=20
newsgroup very often and might not be able to find it=20
again. 8-)

The mouse drivers that are supplied with CMD's SmartMouse fix this
jumping pointer problem. Pay attention the next time you have the
pointer jump while in GeoWrite and you notice that it occurs when
using the right shift key along with certain other keys. The SmartMouse
driver fixes this problem right in the driver itself. It is merely a
software problem and not a hardware problem. Part of the problem occurs
with GEOS reading the keyboard. The mouse driver actually becomes a
patch at this point for the keyboard.
  The nice thing is that these drivers will also work with a 1351 mouse.
The only difference is that the center button will be ignored since there
isn't one. (But to get the drivers, you gotta buy the mouse.)

2500 lines at guesstimate 2 bytes of output code per line is 5000
bytes or around 4-6k.  That IS very good for a clone cross
assembler.  Then there is always the porting over the commodore that
has to be considered.

Both Buddy 128 and Karma 64/128 will match that on in-memory stuff.
When you add in the time xfer to the 64/128 they would
more-than-likly beat it most assemblies.  If you consider the time
to load a transfer utility and then do the xfer somehow:

        If using 64net add at a min 10 secs.  (if all hooked and
            ready to go and loaded off a ram disk.)
        if using bbr and "sneaker" net add 30 secs.  (time to load
            and if you can run really really fast.)
        if using a term and null modem at a bare min 30 secs to load
            and go.

I've yet to see or hear of a cross assembler even running on a fast
166 machine off a ramdisk that can beat the real thing.

I think a better real world test would be a 45-55k program running
through 25000-30000 lines of source.

Well, most probably the c64's builtin amplifier has died. It looks

I don't recall any size limits, other than available space on the target
drive.

I am 15 aswell and still find myself kicking around on these
old-ass wonder machines :)) But I would trade my C64 for a super PC :)
Only to sell it and buy more super c64(s) :)) (And mabye one of those
new Amigas :))

I have a 1702 monitor that would look normal if you were tripping on acid=
... As
is sober, it is quite anoying with colors all outta sync and as I have li=
mited
test equipment or no good schematic if you know of such things- please, r=
ead on.

Basicly, I would like to know what I would observe if the color burst cry=
stal
circuit was working improrerly and/or out of adjustment...  Next, if ther=
e was
a component in the oscilator circuit that I should suspect first, what mi=
ght it
be?  I don't have access to an o-scope so keep the test procedures brief.=
  I
would like to fix and re-align this thing myself (good tech practice for =
me and
I lack the funds to have a shop do it...)  So if you have any advice, inc=
luding
a good book title, please- do tell...

Also, the monitor was working fine then all of the sudden-like, it just l=
ost
color...  Now the color is intermitent (it is NOT the wires) with the sam=
e
results using a c64 to provide the luma/chroma to the back and also a com=
posit
signal to the front- still no correct color...  It looks as if the color =
just
can't "lock" on to the correct screen sync but thats as far as my limited=
 TV
knoweldge goes...  The color is also VERY sensitive to any H-hold adjustm=
ents
and will partly cure itself if the screen position is adjusted slightly o=
ne
way or another- quite strange...  The B/W picture is perfect and the RGB
convergence is off slightly but I have played with the alignment magnets =
on
the tube neck for many hours with no change in color performance...

BTW, I have tried all the easy stuff like adjusting the crystal trim cap =
and
chroma burst coil and almost had good color but as soon as the unit is po=
wered
off and back on, the color goes back to being odd...  It seems to flicker=
 (like
"roll" the color) much more on a blue screen (such as the power-on screen=
 of
the c64) but when I multi-color pic. comes up it looks ok for a while...

HA!  I'm still waiting to come across a solid C64 font (bitmap or post sc=
ript)
for a PC- I should clairify and say a font set that looks like the c64 ch=
ar.
set that I can use on my MAC (cause, as we all know, windoze as well as i=

counterpart sucks and so does its font handling...)  I really need a high

 BTW, someone mentioned disassembling on 4 columns on printer. I had

It's as simple as it sounds... replace the two 4416 chips inside the
can, U23 and U25 with 4464 types. The toughest part of the job is
pulling the old chips. It should be done by someone skilled at
desoldering a double-sided plated-through PC board. I like to put
sockets in whenever I pull a chip. That way, if anything goes bad, I
can always put the old ones back as a diagnostic.  The speed of the
new chips is not especially critical. Anything between 120nS and 70nS
would do. The lower number is the faster chip, by the way, and
usually more expensive.
