- Please do sell it to me! I am looking for a bargain price, since I am

- Here is how it came out in Arkansas:
-
- Post thread # 34095 July 5, 1996 (rlv@terra.cnct.com)
-
- Is the winner.
-
- You could have posted your own name four times in rapid succession since my
- rules forgot to specify otherwise. You all were either too polite or didn't
- notice.
-
- This was fun.. but I didn't much like my selection method since this .ipa
- account
- didn't log the same as the .edu account leaving me to believe that it is pretty
- undependable. I got the most complete results on another (.edu ) account so
- who knows if somebody got left out. I've noticed before that the postings
- seem
- to get scattered around and don't always make it to all servers. What a shame.
- (Pues, asi es la vida)
-
- Anyway, I'm contacting rlv@terra by email and as soon as I get the address, and
- the game will be in the mail.
-
- I've got more of these to give away, maybe 30 or 40. Somebody give me a better
- idea about how to do this. As I said, my method leaves a lot to be desired.
- For
- instance, the post numbers didn't even agree with the dates and times. And if
- I'd
- gotten any replies from Europe, I don't know how I'd have figured it. At least
- all
- the current replies are in CDT. I guess there's still always the chance that
- a
- belated post with an even earlier date could yet show up, putting me in a bad
- situation as I have here and now announced the winner.
-
- As quickly as I can put something better together, we'll do it again
-
- Jim

- : freenet system that all the sudden locked up with a blank screen and
- : locked up cursor as we attempted to get to our e-mail. No other
- : problems arose using any other area of our system. But users went into
- : a frenzy because they could not get into their e-mail.
- : We realized that this problem was with Novaterm versions 9.4 and
- : 9.5, but Novaterm 9.3 worked great with no PINE incompatability. So,
- : we are all still on using the older Novaterm version. If you run into
- : this same problem, keep this in mind and hang on to your Novaterm 9.3.
- : P.S. Would anyone please e-mail me and help me out with the

- Years ago when I played with these, I used to use a 2764. One small

- Sure are! I ran a Color64 BBS for about 4 years. (1988 to 1991). I started
- with a simple C-128 and two 1571's (using the h0 and h1 modes), and then
- purchased two 1581's and a 1764 REU... In 1990, I purchased a 20 Meg LtK
- and ran the system until its death in 1991. The Commodore BBS community just
- dried up around the area... no use running a system that didn't have any
- callers. I still have all my original disks, various overlay backups, and
- even disks and disks of mods and games (Empire & Murder Motel!)
-
- Some day, if I can acquire an LtK, I could put the thing back online again!
-
- Oh the memories...

- The reason it was so slow was because when you GO64 the 1571 stays in
- 1571 mode. Jiffydos doesn't enhance 1571 mode much if at all. So if you
- want to keep the 1571 in 1541 mode then you need to reset the 128 and
- hold the C= key everytime for the enhancement.

- : turned it on while holding the C= key. Novaterm was up and running in
- : no time (well 41 seconds to be exact). I signed on and did what I wanted
- : to and signed off with this question in my mind. Why was it so slow when
- : I switched from 128 mode to 64 mode? The screen still showed JiffyDOS
- : was active. What happened to my drive? I had done the go64 swap before
- : without any loss in loading speed.
- : I fired up the 128 in 80 column mode, did go64 and loaded Novaterm. 41
- : seconds.
- : I quit. Fired up the 128 in 80 column mode. Loaded TWS 128, Quit, go64,
- : load Novaterm. 2 minutes and 31 seconds.
- : A few more tests and I realized that the jiffyDOS manual doesn't tell the
- : whole story on page 25/26 (yes I looked in the manual!) when it says 'do not
- : use the GO 64 command'.
- : If you start your 128 in 128 mode and DO NOT ACCESS THE DISK DRIVE you
- : can use GO64 and not suffer and performance loss in your drive. Even
- : pressing the '@' key to read the Drive DOS version prior to using the
- : GO64 command is enough to mess up the loading performance once you are in
- : 64 mode.
- : Just thought I'd pass this on.

- Don't know all the ins and outs of the technology but I do know that the
- Iomega ZIP drive has NO phisical write protect. Rather, it relies on the
- driver that is installed in the windose or MAC host CPU to check the write
- protect status and refeuse to write to the disk if the flag is set... From
- a commodore point of view, this is clearly a disadvantage and depending on
- how easily it is to set/reset this flag on a PC, it may be the drives only
- flaw. The SyQuest has a phisical notch (like a 3.5" disk...)

- The ZIP drive was developed by the IOMEGA company- the same who made the
- famous Bernolli <sp> drive. I assume they drew from that research when
- making the ZIP drive because the media is thin (like a floppy disk).
- Contrast the SyQuest, these cartridges are more like hard drive platters
- but the hard drive midia is contained within a "sturdy"- ahem... cartruidge
- that allows it to be poped out... While this is a novel aproach, it has many
- disadvantages, the most noticable of which is how fragle the mechanism is...
- Also, Zip drives and loud and get quite hot (cause of the power required to
- spin the huge platter...) all this is contrast the ZIP drive, anyway...

- > from Zip or that Syquest is doing poorly and just dumping stock?
- Well, SyQuest and Iomega have been compeditors long before the ZIP drive
- came out... In fact, SyQuest was doing quite well marketing 5.25" removable
- media cartridges that held 40megs, the next model held 80... These drives
- were peices of crap (in my opininion...) but for firms that needed to be
- able to lug around huge files they were a god send... The Iomega corp. had
- all but given up on the removable media trend (with only a tape drive and
- the Bernolli technology keeping their name in catalogs) untill 1995 when out
- of nowhere they released the ZIP drive... It was all SyQuest could do to
- keep up... The 130meg drive was released (in my opinion, premature- so not
- all of the bugs are worked out). As a result, Imoega has shot to the top
- of the removable media market with more money than they know what to do with.
- If you want more- Check out the Iomega JAZZ drive, 1G of removable media for
- under $100.00 per cartridge... -nice... I think Imoega will be around a while..
- .
- And before you ask- the JAZZ drive is NOT compatable with the ZIP drive...

- I own an HP500 that I use with my 64/128. I have an Epson emulation
- cartridge that HP made a few years back. It seems to work fine with a
- Super Graphics Gold interface. But somehow an HP running an Epson
- emulation, with a interface card that is running a Commodore emulation,
- seems rather inefficient. It works fine, though, and is certainly a
- tribute to the ruggness of the emulations in place within these two

- I've used a ZIP on my 128, but only by hooking it up to my 128 through a
- CMD SCSI hard drive. The ZIP drives are a tad inconvenient in that they
- only support device 5 & 6 (or is it 4 & 5). Anyway for it to boot, it
- would need to be device 0. I bet there would be more success with an EZ
- drive from Syquest. I have heard of people using older Syquest and
- Bernoulies with the CMD host adapter, and booting off of them. But, its
- my understanding that when you pop the media and put in a new one you
- have to hit RESET on the host adapter, or else you'll scramble your data.
- The CMD doesn't have anything built in to support removable media.

-
- $25.00 + cod s/h for a 1571 Disk drive which is currently in use and

- up front. If you have a bad looking 1902a that works fine swap out the
- insides into this one! Its easy to do.
