- Hi,
-
- I'll be acquiring a home of my own in the near future and would like
- to install a collection of old computers in the basement. Since I
- already own a number of oldtimers of different brands, I'd now like
- to add some CBM veterans to this collection.
-
- I would like to get the following:
-
- - PET 2001 (chiclet kbd, cassette drive, mono monitor, 4K version)
- - CBM 8032 w/ 8050 dual floppy drive and printer
-
- Other models would be appreciated but with lower priority :-)
-
- I definitely DON'T need or want any C64, VIC20, C16, Plus4 or whatever...

- I recently bought a quickcam for my clone and noticed it realy liked 160=
- x200 resolution the best, for speed. Not that speed is a
- problem.
- Then I realized that the C64/128 in 40 col. uses 320x200 in hires bitmap=
- mode and 160x200 in multicolor bimap mode.
- So whats to keep some hot programmer from writting a term that will use a=
- ComputerEyes or Video Byte video capture cart (they use
- the USER port), and running the modem off a Swiftlink??
- I see this as a rather complicated but totally neat thing to do.
-
- If by some chance you or a friend want to take this up, I do have a few =
- suggestions. First an option to switch between viewing
- yourself and the person on the other end (Control 1 or 2 ect.) That way y=
- ou can adjust the input especially if your using Computer
- eyes.
- And perhaps in 320x200 mode viewing yourself and the other caller at the=
- same time?? Kinda distorted but you get the picture.
- Oh and dont forget maybe 2 lines for text at the bottom or 1 at the top =
- and 1 at the bottom for chatting back and forth.
- Stick to black and white, color would be cool but ugly on a 64/128.=20
- Pretty soon this will make a cool addition to the SuperCPU. It should ru=
- n cool at 20mhz.
-
- So who wants to do it?? Be brave , you could make a few bucks!!

- Where did this weird notion that PPP or SLIP are somehow
- intrinsically 'graphical' come from? We saw this last year when
- someone was saying the C64 would 'never' get a SLIP because it
- didn't have the capabilities, and turns out he meant graphic
- capabilities.
-
- Is it a common practice of providers who sell PPP or SLIP
- access to bundle it with a graphical browser as a front end, so
- that people confuse the two? Because Point to Point Protocol or Seria=
- l=20
- .....
-
- I'm sure that is the reason. For our PC/Mac users, we have a startup
- package (I'm an ISP) that sets them up with a PPP dialer, a WWW
- browser, and an SMTP/POP3 mail client. 50% of our users stick with
- that, and never venture further. About another 30% get into IRC, and
- get a client for that, and the other 20% learn to telnet, archie,
- etc., and get quite knowledgeable. Nearly all of the folks in this
- last group have Unix experience, and also know how to do these things
- through a shell.
-
- One thing I've noticed on all type of machines is that text-based work
- conducted over a modem generally works better with a direct terminal
- connection than a SLIP/PPP TCP/IP connection. This is because, for
- example, if you're telnetting to a host, and typing a letter on that
- host, each single character you type (or a few, if you're really
- fast), is encapsulated in a TCP packet, which is encapsulated in an IP
- packet, which is encapsulated in a SLIP or PPP packet, and then the
- procedure is reversed at the other end. Since the TCP and IP headers
- add a minimum of 40 bytes, this is a lot of overhead, and you'll
- notice a lot of sluggishness typing plain text over a TCP/IP modem
- connection. On the other hand, a faster connection (ISDN or Ethernet)
- transfers those packets fast enough that you can't feel any
- sluggishness.
-
- There's certainly no reason why clients like ftp, telnet, archie,
- mail, etc., would need to be graphical to work over a TCP/IP
- connection. The ones designed for Windows/Mac are graphical because
- everything is graphical on those platforms. However, on PC's for
- example, there is DOS TCP/IP SLIP software that has text-based clients
- for mail, news, etc.; it's just not commonly used anymore. A nice
- elm-ncftp-tin-telnet text-based setup would be very nice on the
- Commodore without graphics.
