Hi,
Does anyone else have this problem? When playing M.U.L.E. in beginner
mode, the program goes into a loop when the ship comes back after six mon=
ths.
Is this a known bug, or is there something wrong with my copy? If it is=
a
bug, are there any fixes?
Cheers,
- Matthew.

Can anyone tell me what type of fuse goes in a C64, as a friend picked=20
up a C64 that he did not try first. The computer didn't work so I opened=20

Please answer by Email if possible as this news server goes down a lot.

The FTP disk of the host "ccnga.uwaterloo.ca" has filled up, so I have
decided to discontinue carrying demos and emulator files on the site unti=
l
other space frees up. The site is currently carrying 72 Megs of Commodor=

stuff (where, really, I only have official permission to carry 25 Megs of
stuff).
Anyhow, the demos and emulation stuff are taking up 20 Megs of this space
and that is increasing since both of these types of programs usually come=
in
obnoxiously large ZIP files. (Plus, I personally think that both of thes=

put these directories back.

When I could go into a Big-W and buy a box a DD disks,
fine. Nowadays, I'll keep my DD disks for things that are more
important, like archiving Style demos.

If you have to buy DD disks from a high-markup computer
store, and can get HD disks from a low-markup discount store,
saving pennies may be *exactly* the reason to use HD disks for
a 100 disk collection!

If my original information source was correct that an
HD drive wrote slightly narrower tracks than a DD drive (whether
this was when detecting an HD disk or a DD disk, I don't know,
but I've seen too many solutions to compatibility problems to
believe just because they *attempted* to solve the DD / HD
compatibility problem with 3.5" disks that they necessarily
succeeded -- so maybe I believed the original source for so
long because I'm *ready* to believe in this kind of problem 8-)#
-- ( pretty long parenthetical statement, huh?) --
then the problem *is* a hardware problem -- drive alignment.
Remember the original explanation I gave (which might
just as easily be wrong, as we've seen): the HD drive write
a slightly narrower track, so that there is that DD data still
out there on the edges. With properly aligned drives, no problem,
because they are just tiny ribbons, not enough even for a
obsolete 1 to over-ride a current 0. However, with alignment
problems, that non-overwritten old track would be wider than
with a DD <-> DD or HD <-> HD track, so that the DD <-> HD
transfer would be (notice the use of the contional sense
there) more finicky about alignment problems ( not a rare
hardware problem, is it? ) than DD <-> DD or HD <-> HD.
Oh, and BTW, there's a technique to use if you have to
live with sneaker netting data between misaligned drives in a
setting where the drives won't get aligned until they fail to
read a 'written once' commercial distribution disk. I'll
leave people to guess what it is, but as a hint I'll point
out that it double the number of disks you have to dedicate
to disk-based transfers. 8-)#=20
Notice that the above would actually be an accurate
description if the university had just bought a bunch of
machines with sub-spec HD drive mechanisms, so it also
could have been true for the HD drives the university
hardware support person was talking about without
necessarily being true in general. That's something that
I *didn't* notice when I started spouting off on this
topic last week. 8-)#

As others have said before, .sfx files work with either
C64 or C128. But if you have a C128, you won't regret .sfx in
fast mode.

What a terrible thing to say! Why, here I am spending
some of my weekend downloading demos to run on my emulator.
Of course, when I get a real C64 again, I won't need the
emulator, but that doesn't mean that the emulator is not
a useful stop-gap.
A much better reason would be that the best emulators
are available elsewhere, and *ought* to be on any collection of
the relevant host system that pretends to provide all the useful
things you can do on that host -- and to be sure, there nothing
more useful than making a host pretend it's a C64. And Digital
Dungeon has a good collection of demos.
So I think that replacing the directories by a
reference to other sources for these particular categories
would be reasonable permanent solution.

I've been asked by the good guys at Driven if I'd write an article about
user groups. It would be general stuff, basically answering the question=
,
"How are YOU keeping the Commie alive?" We're looking for descriptions o=
f
what goes on at your meetings (topics, equipment, demos), how many member=
s
you have and from what walks of life they come from, etc. Just send
whatever you think might be usable! To be fair, though I can't guarantee
this, I'll try to include something from every group I hear from.
In the next few days, I'll be going through Mr. Brain's user group list
and contacting those with Internet e-mail addresses; I'm afraid I don't
have the resources to contact groups by postal mail. If you know a group
that doesn't have an Internet e-mail contact, but it would like to be
included, I'd be happy to accept mail to this address:

Yes, Yes, and soon. CMD is slated to carry it, and very soon according to
the author who e-mailed me a couple of weeks ago. Do you need to convert
to .gif or convert from .gif to a CBM format?
