- First off, I want to thank everyone who worked to make PIPMAG5 a
- reality. The support of those who sent in articles, as well as those
- whose advice has helped me put this together, is greatly appreciated!
-
- We have a number of interesting articles for you in this issue.
- From regular contributor Dennis Fowler (D.FOWLER2) there is a review
- of VDE, a Wordstar-like text editor, and how to open CP/M's cans, .LBR
- and .ARK files. There are also two pieces from new contributor Robert
- Coleman (R.COLEMAN3). One is a guest editorial and the other concerns
- a fantastic deal on Osborne OS1s. From Jim Taylor (JF.TAYLOR) we have
- some reasons why we can feel better about our CP/M computers than the
- users of Big Blue (and clones thereof) do about theirs. Tom McEnroe
- (T.MCENROE1) brings us a review of a Z-System text editor called ZDE.
- David Green (DWGREEN) tells us how to multi-task with CP/M
- computer(s). From Tom Robinson (TOM.ROBINSON), X-10 RT Sysop, we have
- an article on controlling your home. And from our own Sysop, Bill
- Juliani (C128-BILL), we have a report on the CP/M RT Survey.
-
- For those of you who use Commodore computers, PIPMAG has a sister
- publication in the Flagship (Page 625). It's called the Starboard
- Journal, edited by the beautiful and talented Sheri Lynn Meyers
- (SHIPS-CAT). Drop by there and check it out. Be sure to leave a note
- in the BB there, telling her that you loved it. I'm sure that you
- will.
-
- In order to better serve the members of the CP/M RoundTable, a
- new survey will be introduced shortly. This will consist of an .ARK
- file that you can download. It contains a survey form, and
- instructions for filling it out and sending it back to the Sysops.
- The form will have three or four questions that you can answer at
- length, rather than a multiple-choice format like the survey on Page
- 685. Please, PLEASE take the time to fill it in and upload it. The
- CP/M RT is NOT going to fold its tents and silently steal away into
- the night. We intend to be here for you, for a long time. However,
- the shape that those tents take is in your hands. Take the time --
- send it in!
-
- Like the RoundTable in general, PIPMAG in particular needs your
- input. This is YOUR magazine! It's what you make it! To date, I
- don't have to take off my socks to count the number of people who have
- sent in articles. This represents about 2% of the CP/M RT members.
- There has been nothing submitted about Z-Systems so far. The response
- in the BB has been appalling! Isn't there anything about PIPMAG that
- you liked well enough to comment on? Isn't there anything you hate?
- Remember, you have two choices here. You can make PIPMAG the magazine
- you want it to be by sending in articles and comments, or you can make
- it the magazine I want it to be by keeping silent. The choice is
- yours. Like the RT in general, I in particular am not going to
- disappear.
-
- PIPMAG Notes
-
- PIPMAG can now be read on-line. Selected articles are available
- in menu form for reading or capturing from the top CP/M RT menu. You
- can either select Item 7, or reach it directly with the command M688
- from any system prompt. The articles will change from time to time.
- Just note the date along side each menu item. Help files are also
- available here covering the Libraries, the Bulletin Board, and General
- Usage of the CP/M RT. Some of these files were provided courtesy of
- DEB, Flagship RT Sysop. Thanks, DEB!
-
- There is a new place to send comments and articles to PIPMAG.
- This is the GEmail address PIPMAG$. The dollar sign DOES NOT mean
- that there is any extra fee involved with using this address. It just
- means that it's a special-purpose mailbox. Feel free to send any
- articles, comments, criticism, or whatever here.
-
- AND THE WINNER IS !!!
-
- PIPMAG's First Ever Upload Contest has been an incredible
- success. Picking a winner has been harder than I ever imagined it
- would be. Not only are all the articles of excellent quality, but I
- also wanted to avoid the appearance of any personal bias. I think the
- only way to do that is to have a panel of judges, which is something
- I'll do next time.
-
- So without further ado, (and I here the screams already) the
- winner is:
-
- Robert Coleman, for his article about cheap Osborne O1s! It's my
- feeling that the information in the article will help bring more
- people into the CP/M fold. Congratulations, Robert!
-
- Robert will receive five free weekdays of non-prime connect time
- in the CP/M RT.
-
- AND ANOTHER ROUND OF APPLAUSE
-
- For Dennis Fowler, who will also be receiving five free weekdays
- of non-prime connect time in the CP/M RT, my way of saying thanks for
- his continued support.
-
- Once again, thanks to all who helped make PIPMAG a reality. Keep
- those cards and letters coming!
-
- N - E - E - D I - N - P - U - T !!!
-
- SPECIAL NOTE: The opinions expressed in PIPMAG are solely those of the
- authors. If you disagree, please be advised that they in no way
- reflect the positions of either GEnie, or the CP/M RoundTable. If you
- agree, then you are a truly wonderful person, and so are we.
