  1. SIDPLAYER NEWS FILE #6  March 1986

  3. this documentation file describes how to use the magic sid
  4. machine, a utility for loading, playing, and cataloging
  5. sidplayer songs.  msm will automatically load and play up to
  6. 144 songs, far more than you will probably be able to get on
  7. a disk.  the program, and this documentation file, were
  8. written by terry kryger.
  9.  
  10. the most recent version, msm 2.2, features an updated m/l
  11. play routine provided by craig chamberlain.  among other
  12. improvements, f-x defaults to 'on' for less background
  13. noise.
  14.  
  15. when run, msm displays a menu of seven options:
  16.  
  17.   1. create or update a directory file
  18.  
  19.   2. choose songs from directory file
  20.  
  21.   3. choose songs (no directory file)
  22.  
  23.   4. play all songs in directory file
  24.  
  25.   5. play all songs on disk (no file)
  26.  
  27.   6. send directory file to printer
  28.  
  29.   7. end

  32. create or update a directory file
  33.  
  34. the 'directory file' is not the same thing as the disk
  35. directory. it is a special directory, originally created by
  36. the msm program, of all the sidplayer songs on the disk.
  37.  
  38. when you select this option, the program will search for all
  39. files on the disk having the '.mus' filename extension.  it
  40. will ignore any files not having the extension, even if they
  41. are sidplayer songs, so don't forget the '.mus' at the end
  42. of the filename.  similarly, any non-sidplayer files (seq
  43. files, for instance) that mistakenly have the .mus
  44. extension, will be read into the directory but will not load
  45. properly, causing the program to crash.

  47. after all the sidplayer songs are found, you will have the
  48. option to alphabetize the names for your song directory.  a
  49. sequential file called 'sidcat' will then be written to the
  50. disk.  having this directory file on the disk eliminates the
  51. time-consuming process of checking the whole disk each time
  52. you run the program.  use this option anytime you save
  53. another song on the disk, to keep the file updated.

  58. when you select this option, the program will list all the
  59. songs in the 'directory file' created with option 1.  if no
  60. 'sidcat' file exists, you will be reminded to create one.
  61.  
  62. the songs are displayed on screens of 26 songs each.  to
  63. choose the songs, type in the letters corresponding to the
  64. songs in the order you want to hear them.  the song names
  65. will be highlighted as they are selected.  the same song can
  66. also be selected to play more than once.

  68. if more than 26 songs are on the disk, a reminder appears at
  69. the bottom of the screen.  press the f7 function key to
  70. bring up the next screen of titles.  the f7 key will cycle
  71. through all the screens as many times as you wish, allowing
  72. you to make selections each time.  when you return to a
  73. screen, your previous choices will still be highlighted.

  75. press the return key at any time to cancel your selections
  76. and go back to the menu.  when you are finished choosing
  77. songs, press the space bar to start playing.

  79. you can stop any song while it is playing and go on to the
  80. next selection by pressing the space bar.  pressing the
  81. up-arrow key will cancel any remaining selections and return
  82. you to the menu.

  84. you may safely use this option after inserting a different
  85. disk, as the current 'sidcat' directory file is loaded each
  86. time the option is selected.

  91. after searching the disk directory for .mus files, this
  92. option works just like the above option.

  97. the songs will be played in alphabetical order if the song
  98. directory was sorted.  otherwise they will be played in the
  99. same sequence as they appear on the disk.

  104. this option plays all the songs in same sequence as they
  105. appear on the disk. the directory file is not used.

  110. choose this option if you would like to print the names of
  111. the songs in the song directory file.

  116. when you are done playing songs, choose this option to exit
  117. the program and return to basic.

  120. if you are using the epyx fastload cartridge and find that
  121. you are having trouble creating a directory file, unplug
  122. (don't just disable) the cartridge for this operation.  it
  123. will work fine for reading the files, but for some reason it
  124. doesn't always like to write the sidcat file.  the mach 5
  125. cartridge and (as far as i know) other fastloaders work
  126. fine.
