  6.       
  7.      Yes, I am enthusiastic about Harry Wilhelm's The
  8. Missing Link (a.k.a. TML).  I'm not sure exactly what I said
  9. on the phone, but I think it was something like this: "Of
  10. all the Extended BASIC extensions I've reviewed in Computer
  11. Shopper and elsewhere - and I think I've reviewed all of the
  12. most important ones - I think The Missing Link offers the
  13. most striking possibilities."  I believe the TML demo
  14. program itself is proof of that. 
  15.       
  16.      If I said that TML was "the best" of the lot without
  17. qualification, I may have said more than I intended, because
  18. I tend to be rather cautious when it comes to declaring on
  19. product "THE best."  Which enhanced Extended BASIC is best
  20. depends upon your purpose.  For example, Myarc Extended
  21. BASIC II offers a speed increase not found in other
  22. enhancements.  For another example, if you want to do direct
  23. sector disk access, you may need something like Michael
  24. Riccio's STAR or "my" XXB.  For yet another example, if you
  25. want to do database-type activities, you may prefer Jim
  26. Hollender's SXB or Richard Mitchell's String Master.  I
  27. could go on to mention the strengths of other packages as
  28. well (such as Curtis Provance's EDP), but Ill close with
  29. just one more example:  if you want to use an enhanced
  30. Extended BASIC to simplify writing standard Extended BASIC
  31. programs, i like Triton's SEB (which is probably the one I
  32. use more than any other).

  34.      But, again, to me The Missing Link opens up exciting
  35. possibilities for the Extended BASIC programmer who wants to
  36. do some neat things with bit-mapped mode in graphics.  With
  37. TML, you can put a TI-Artist picture on the screen, and add
  38. windows, music, sprites with automotion, etc., doing it all
  39. at the same time.  Harry Wilhelm's TML is an outstanding
  40. accomplishment, and I'm proud to have been involved in at
  41. least a small way with the beta-testing before Harry decided
  42. what software company to market TML with. 
  43.       
  44.      Incidentally, I do have perhaps a minor complaint about
  45. the way Texaments is doing the marketing: in a full-page ad
  46. in MICROpendium (March 1990, page 5), Steve Lamberti claims
  47. (in large type in the center of the page), "Through Extended
  48. BASIC, The Missing Link allows anyone to access all of the
  49. incredible graphics and text capabilities found in the
  50. TI-99/4a.  This was something people said could never be
  51. done...  we did it." 
  52.       
  53.      Well, Steve didn't do it: Harry Wilhelm did it, before
  54. Steve Lamberti ever saw the program, and it's disappointing
  55. to see a full-page ad for TML in which the President of the
  56. software company seems to take the credit and doesn't even
  57. mention the author by name!  But I hipe that won't stop
  58. people from buying the program.  (All they have to do is
  59. send $24.95 plus $3.00 shipping to Texaments, 53 Center
  60. Street, Patchogue NY 11772.)

  62.      A quick comment or two about XXB.  XXB has its own
  63. distinctive strengths.  (1) XXB itself is free. (It's okay
  64. to pass around all the material on that 360 sector XXB/1-5
  65. disk!)  (2) XXB is not just an XB extension, but a growing
  66. library of "modules" of routines (written not only by me, but
  67. also by J. Peter hoddie, Curtis Provance, Andy Becker, and
  68. others) that you can, if you wish, embed in your XB
  69. programs.  Source code for almost all of the routines is
  70. also available in the genial TRAVelER (which, however,
  71. is NOT free! <grin>).  in short, XXB is perhaps best for
  72. those who want to try their own hand at putting together
  73. whatever routines they like for themselves, whereas The
  74. Missing Link is an easy-to-use integrated package for the XB
  75. programmer of exciting routines that at this time you can
  76. find nowhere else.

  78.      By the way, i intend to include material in GT for the
  79. benefit of those who own TML.  I've already written several
  80. things, including a program that allows you to use Wayne
  81. Stith's KWICKFONT with TML, and another program that
  82. simplifies putting TI-Artist Instances on the screen with
  83. TML, and I hope to do more as well.
