ORIGINALLY PUBLISHED IN LIMA NEWSLETTER FEBRUARY 1990
ADVENTURE WORD LIST
By: Andy Frueh, Lima UG
I know that there are several (quite possibly hundreds or even
thousands) of adventure games out there for the TI. Public domain,
fairware, or commercial, they are all usually pretty hard to solve.
Most simply have screens of text, and almost all uses some kind of text
command. The problem is figuring out what words are "legal" to the
game. For disk-based games, this can usually be done using a sector
editor and looking at the programs' internal list.
However, these adventures can differ. For this reason, I have
compiled a list of actions, and the most popular words used to
accomplish the job. These are all simple, one-word commands, and any
nouns (such as objects, jewels, ect.) are left out. Note that while
Scott Adams adventures only require a verb + noun commands, such as LOOK
BOX, some games are more complicated. In INFOCOM games, you have to
LOOK IN THE BOX, LOOK AT THE BOX, LOOK UNDER THE BOX, ect. This list
includes only verbs such as GET, WEAR, LIFT, and excludes prepositions
such as AT and OF.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Action Command(s)
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Pick up PICK UP, LIFT, CARRY, HOLD, GET, WEAR, TAKE
Move around MOVE, GO, SWIM, CLIMB, WALK, RUN, THROW, RIDE, DRIVE
Examine EXAMINE, LOOK, GO, READ
Manipulate PRESS, PUSH, PULL, HIT, THROW, SWITCH, FLIP, TAKE, GET, DROP
Misc. CHANGE, BECOME, EXPLORE, SAY, SPEAK, WRITE, LISTEN, HEAR,
WATCH, SMELL, TASTE, EAT, LIGHT, UNLIGHT, BREAK, TIE,
ASK, MEMORIZE, SHOOT, SEE, PUT
----------------------------------------------------------------------
This list is by no means complete. Different games will have
several different commands, depending on the theme. For example, the
Enchanter saga from INFOCOM uses spell names as commands. To
demonstrate, REZROV THE BED, will cause the Rezrov spell to act upon the
bed. These words are just meant to be a popular list of words that are
universal to most games, and may help you come up with alternative
words. When GET doesn't work, try LIFT or WEAR.
