  11.      Remember those good old days of
  12.  1982-84 when there were loads of
  13.  books and magazines for us TIers?
  14.  When we could buy text materials for
  15.  our computer faster than we could
  16.  read and use them?
  17.      Methinks these days may be
  18.  returning.  At least a little.
  19.      At recent fairs and meeting I've
  20.  attended there has been lots of talk
  21.  about the disappearing textware in
  22.  the TI World Community.  No more
  23.  books.  No more magazines.  No
  24.  more...
  25.      Actually, there is more good,
  26.  intelligent, useful TI stuff being
  27.  written for textware today than there
  28.  was four or five years ago.  It's
  29.  just that most of it is being written
  30.  byusers in user groups, not by some
  31.  writer in an ivory tower somewhere.
  32.  Most of these new writings are free
  33.  (in newsletters with membership or in
  34.  exchanges with other groups) and
  35.  readily available.
  36.      
  37.      Someday, I'd love to publish a
  38.  list of my favorite dozen newsletters
  39.  worldwide, but then the IMPACT column
  40.  may be reduced to only 12
  41.  publications.
  42.      So much for that idea.
  43.      
  44.      Joining a user group, even by
  45.  mail if there aren't any nearby,
  46.  may be the most sensible investment a
  47.  99er make.
  48.      
  49.      However, there are still lots of
  50.  other sources for textware in our
  51.  fellowship.
  52.

  55.  
  56.  that ASGARD is coming out with.  What
  57.  will it be like? In what ways will it
  58.  be different from, say, MICROpendium?
  59.  Will it be similar to their E-Z Keys
  60.  Journal that ASGARD publishes now?
  61.      I don't know the answers to these
  62.  questions.  Idoknow that two issues
  63.  are already set up and ready to go
  64.  (and I'm sure it'll be up to ASGARD's
  65.  usual high standard), but all else
  66.  will be as much as a surprise to me
  67.  as to anyone.  I can't wait.
  68.      For those unfamiliar with the
  69.  diskazine GENIAL TRAVELER, which is
  70.  one of the very best sources a TI
  71.  disk-drive owner can get, I would
  72.  suggest you write to Barry Traver to
  73.  get a subscription.  There are years
  74.  full of great things on these disks
  75.  for an extremely moderate cost.  (I
  76.  have not even begun to use all the
  77.  wonderful things contained in them.)
  78.      
  79.      But there is another text/disk
  80.  setup out there that is really worth
  81.  your attention.  It's been around
  82.  since September of '87, and it is
  83.  another large value for we 99ers.
  84.      TId Bits is a bimonthly magazine
  85.  for only $8 (6 issues) for hardcopy
  86.  or $12 (6 issues) for disk (SSSD
  87.  flippy).  The disk contains lots of
  88.  additional PD and Fairware stuff to
  89.  extend to two sides.  The magazine
  90.  contains photos and graphics.

  95.      It may be hard to make a decision
  96.  about which version to get - disk or
  97.  text.  Although the disk contains the
  98.  exact text of the hardcopy (and a lot
  99.  of other surprise goodies besides), I
  100.  personally am partial to the hardcopy
  101.  for a number of reasons.
  102.      
  103.      TId Bits pilot issue contained
  104.  some screen photos, graphics of an
  105.  envelope cataloguer, and a screen
  106.  graphic to go along with a program
  107.  printed out.
  108.      The next issues, however,
  109.  contained some of the best
  110.  photographs I have ever seen of the
  111.  internal structure of our computer.
  112.  The text talks about chip
  113.  replacements and gives some very
  114.  precise, easy-to-follow photographs
  115.  and enlargements that make the
  116.  process very logical, very clear, and
  117.  - even to a non-techie like myself -
  118.  very unfrighteningly practical.
  119.      It's one thing to see drawings
  120.  (which are also in the magazine), but
  121.  it's quite another to have
  122.  step-by-step photographs of the
  123.  entire process.
  124.      These magazines are jam-packed
  125.  with all kinds of stuff that you
  126.  don't find in MICROpendium (at
  127.  present, the very best magazine
  128.  source for TI owners).
  129.      Bruce supplies the reader with
  130.  all kinds of inside information on
  131.  a large variety of things for us
  132.  99ers.  Lots of prices of things.
  133.  Lots of addresses.  Lots of reviews.
  134.  Lots of programs.
  135.      It's a one-man operation, and
  136.  each issue gets better and better.
  137.      Bruce has promised to continue
  138.  this magazine through at least one
  139.  year's subscription.  And hardcopies
  140.  of all past issues will be available
  141.  through 1988 with each subscription.
  142.  The disk versions will continue to be
  143.  available, I assume, for a long time
  144.  to come.  Newsletter editors may be
  145.  interested in getting this version
  146.  for an excellent source of some
  147.  interesting material.
  148.      Bruce says of his excellent
  149.  efforts, " A lot of thought went into
  150.  he pricing of TId Bits.  We were
  151.  keeping in mind that the TI community
  152.  has been shafted too many times.
  153.  Therefore, we set a projected
  154.  break-even factor projected to
  155.  December 1988.  If we should pick up
  156.  a sponsor or advertiser throughout
  157.  the year, those funds would be used
  158.  to lure a TI Brain to produce unique
  159.  articles for us.
  160.      "We are committed to 1988 and are
  161.  cautiously optimistically looking to
  162.  1989.  If the world doesn't end or
  163.  the TI community completely collapse
  164.  we project some kind of survival into
  165.  1989 and beyond."

  167.      Hooray!

  169.      Writers and programmers and
  170.  techies and non-techies, here is a
  171.  good source for you to get those
  172.  articles published.
