\paperw19995 \margr0\margl0 \plain \fs20 \f1 The Tate Gallery is one of the most important museums in England. It is divided into two distinct sections: one is devoted
to British painting, the other contains modern and contemporary works of art.\par
The museum was inaugurated in 1897, in order to provide a new home for the paintings by British artists formerly housed in the National Gallery of London. The collection
was progressively enlarged through donations, purchases and the transfer of paintings and sculptures from the National Gallery and the Victoria and Albert Museum. Today the museum houses an exhaustive collection documenting the evolution of art in Great
Britain from the sixteenth to the nineteenth century. The sections devoted to Hogarth, Constable and Turner are particularly significant. The collection of works by Pre-Raphaelite painters is also of considerable artistic interest.\par
The section on
modern art contains works from the main artistic styles, including Impressionism, Cubism and Fauvism.\par
More recent developments are represented by works of Pop Art, Action Painting and Conceptual Art. Periodical shows and displays are staged alongs
ide the permanent exhibition, which always makes visiting the museum a new and stimulating experience.
